Dennis Mack 1941-2015
December 19, 1941 - December 23, 2015
Dennis Mack, age 74, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday December 23, 2015 at Altru Hospital surrounded by family and God's grace.
Dennis was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on December 19, 1941, to Frank and Marie (Stengl) Mack. He graduated from Sacred Heart in 1959. Dennis was married to Caryl Elaine Thompson on August 19, 1965 and they enjoyed a full, happy marriage over the last 50 years.
He grew up in a family of six on a farm east of East Grand Forks. Early on he learned the lessons that come from hard work and responsibility to family. In high school he was part of a football team that was eventually inducted into the Sacred Heart High School Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduation, Dennis began a career farming potatoes, grain and beets. Later in life he went into the insurance business, and began Evergreen Insurance in 1994 along with his son Jason, and was eventually joined by daughter Nicole. At various times in his life Dennis raced sprint cars, fished Marlin, golfed and went on fishing, hunting and snowmobiling trips.
Dennis absolutely loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports, but he was an especially devoted hockey fan. He and Caryl would often be in several rinks in a day to catch all the games they could. Dennis and Caryl celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 19th of this year. They were devoted to each other and were always together, living life fully. Throughout their marriage the couple enjoyed golfing, lake living, dancing, traveling south in the winter, watching their children and grandchildren's events, practicing their faith, and being with friends and family.
He believed in hard work, family, friendship, his community and his faith. He worked hard and played hard. He was proud of his Bohemian heritage. He was authentic, steadfast and he loved to laugh. Dennis was caring and honest -- he had such a big heart, and was always willing to help. He had a gentle smile and a firm handshake. Because of how he was, Dennis was quick to become a true friend, and he has enjoyed so many good friendships over the years. He had a knack for dispersing life's wisdom with different sayings that were often times as humorous as they were instructive. Dennis was a member of the Eagles Club #350 and the Elks Club. Dennis was one of a kind.
During the last decade Caryl has been Dennis' rock, and the two had
weathered a long battle against the cancer that eventually took his life.
Dennis will be dearly missed, but for him we lift up our hearts and accept
God's gift of grace and assurance that we all will be reunited.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Caryl of East Grand Forks, Minnesota;
daughter, Brenda Mack (Trent Brekken), and children, Dane, Sydney and
their father Mike Anderson of Crookston, Minn.; son Jason (Kristie) Mack
and their children Alexa, Haley, Tanner and CJ; daughter Nicole (Cory)
Chupka and their children Tyra, Kole and Jake; sisters, Karen (Richard)
Kovar, Jane (Rob) Wagner all of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; brothers,

Melbourne Charles Hagen 1921-2016
Born: April 10, 1921
Died: December 12, 2015
U.S. Veteran
Melbourne Charles Hagen passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at
Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, Minnesota. He was 94.
Mel was born April 10, 1921 to Adele Julianna (Nelson) and Charles Carl Gragert at the farm home of his maternal grandparents In Grove Park Township near Mentor, Minnesota. He was baptized at West Wild Rice Lutheran Church near Twin Valley and confirmed at Union Lake Lutheran Church. Mel attended rural Pleasant View District 52 School in Norman County through the eighth grade when his family moved to a farm northwest of Winger, Minnesota. Mel took the surname of his stepfather, Richard Hagen. Mel graduated from McIntosh High School and in 1939 he enrolled at Bemidji State College and earned his teaching degree in 1941.
Mel taught rural school for three years, beginning in Pleasant View District 52, and later at Grove School near Perley, Minnesota. A dedicated teacher, he often worked during after school hours to provide tutorial assistance to his students. After all these years Mel remained in contact with his former students, including one in New Mexico and two in Norman County who called or visited him at Fair Meadow. Mel enjoyed listening to their recollections from school days, about when he played songs on the guitar and not to mention that they considered him their favorite teacher.
Mel's teaching career ended during World War II when he served for a brief period in the U. S. Army Air Corps at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. In 1944 he accepted a job with a contractor in charge of a runway extension project at an Army Air Force Base on Shemya Island in the Aleutians in territorial Alaska. Later Mel moved to the nearby island of Adak where he worked in civil service with the transportation dispatch office for the Army. When the U.S. Navy took over the base, Mel became supervisor of fuel distribution and worked in this capacity for 24 years until his retirement in 1967. Mel received numerous performance awards and was recognized by the Department of Defense for his outstanding work.
Mel met Ann Bernice Colebank while attending Bemidji State and they were married five years later at Maple Lake Lutheran Church on June 26, 1946. Mel and Ann raised their family of three children on Adak. Mel was active in the scouts and PTA.
When Mel retired in 1967 the family returned to Fertile, Minnesota. Following the death of Ann's parents in 1975 and with their children no longer at home, Mel and Ann returned to Adak for additional six years. In 1982 they moved to Anchorage, Alaska where Mel resided until May 2011 when he moved to the Fair Meadow Nursing Home.
Mel often spoke highly of his six grandchildren and was so very proud of their many and varied accomplishments. Mel was as proud of his new cars as he was of his family. He especially cherished his first car, a 51 Black Cherry Champion Studebaker with traction control and rear seat heater. Sister Bridget Durkin 1932-2016
February 5, 1932 - January 3, 2016
Resided in Crookston, Minnesota
Obituary--
Sister Bridget Durkin, 83, passed away at RiverView Care Center, Crookston, Minnesota, on January 3, 2016.
Bridget Durkin was born on February 5, 1932, in Ardoch, North Dakota, to John and Martha (Lapinski) Durkin as one of their nine children. Bridget received her elementary education in a one-room country school in Walsh County, North Dakota, and later she graduated from Mount Saint Benedict Academy. Bridget was baptized, received her first Eucharist and was confirmed in Saint John the Baptist Church in Ardoch. She remembered that she was confirmed by Bishop Aloisius Muench, later Cardinal Muench.
Bridget was first inspired to becoming a sister by the Presentation Sisters who taught her for two weeks of summer religious education. She later considered the Maryknoll Sisters because she admired their work as missionaries, and she felt that she wanted serve God as they did. Eventually she became acquainted with the Benedictine Sisters from Mount Saint Benedict Monastery. She was attracted to both Mount Saint Benedict Academy and the monastic community by the friendliness of the students and the sisters. She wrote that she felt that all were treated as if each one was important. She was attracted by their "friendliness with each other, no cliques or class distinctions between rich and poor." She was drawn not only by the friendliness of the place but also because she felt that everywhere there "seemed to be music -- everyone seemed to be singing -- Mass, the conservatory, the girls' chorus, the chant of the sisters singing the Divine Office."
Bridget entered Mount Saint Benedict Monastery on January 3, 1954, and was invested in the Benedictine habit on July 2, 1954, when she was received into the novitiate and was given the name Sister Romana. Later, she returned to her baptismal name of Bridget. She pronounced her temporary commitment as a Benedictine sister a year later. She made her final monastic profession on July 11, 1960.
Sister Bridget received an Associate of Arts degree from Corbett College in Crookston.
She generously shared her gifts in caring for the chapel at the Mount and in working in the garden. Her work in the garden was long and arduous, and marked by pride in the success of the garden in providing vegetables for Saint Vincent's Nursing Home, Saint Francis Hospital, Mount Saint Benedict Academy and the monastery plus many disadvantaged people. Her flower gardens yielded beautiful blooms for the chapel as well as other parts of the monastery.
Her work as the sacristan was meticulous. The linens used on the altar were perfectly pressed; the utensils used for flower arrangements were cleaned and stored immaculately; candlesticks and candelabra never had a speck of dried wax on them. Sister Bridget had an artistic nature that was exhibited a multitude of ways but especially in gorgeous arrangements of flowers that adorned the altar. On the occasion of her twenty-fifth jubilee of monastic profession she was extremely proud to receive a message from Father Roger Schoenbechler, OSB, who wrote, "I am sending you a copy of my translation of The Book of Psalms. Kindly accept it with my compliments as a token of gratitude to you for the years of faithfulness you did in the sacristy at the Mount, providing daily for the Holy Sacrifice." Sister Bridget treasured this communication for the rest of her life. Sister Bridget celebrated her 60th jubilee of monastic profession on July 26, 2015.
Sister Bridget's artistic gifts also manifested themselves in the creation of woodcarvings as a member of Valley Woodcarvers.
When Sister Bridget was asked what the one thing she was most grateful for was, she said, "That I am a Benedictine Sister, especially in this community, Mount Saint Benedict."
Sister Bridget was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Theodore, Joseph and John, sisters Betty Staskivige, Vernie Drege and Helen Bearson. Sister Bridget is survived by her sisters, Evelyn (Walter) Paschke and Madonna (Lowell) Barsness, many nieces and nephews and the Sisters of Saint Benedict of Crookston.
Reception of Sister Bridget's body will be at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 with visitation until the 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Sister Bridget's funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2016 with Msgr. Roger Grundhaus presiding. All services will be in Sacred Heart Chapel, Mount Saint Benedict Monastery, 620 Summit Ave. Crookston, Minnesota.
