Nancy Ann Hanson

Obituary

Nancy Ann Hanson, age 80, of Crookston, Minnesota, died in her home late Friday morning, October 30, 2015 with friends and family by her side.

Nancy was born at Little Falls, Minnesota, on March 24, 1935, one of two children of the union of Charles and Ardean Johnson Kiewel. They moved to Crookston. Nancy attended Crookston Public Schools. On January 25, 1958 Nancy was united in marriage to George Hanson at Las Vegas, Nevada. She and George made their home on their Fairfax Township farm until moving into Crookston in the early 1960's. They moved back to a new home they built on the farmstead in 1975 and in 1997 Nancy and George returned to Crookston.

Nancy was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed traveling with George and their friends in their younger years. Nancy had a love for shopping up to her last days. She had fun playing scratch off lottery tickets and took pleasure in caring for family pets. Nancy was proud of her children and grandchildren. She delighted in spending time with her great-grandchildren. She was an exceptional woman who will be greatly missed by all.

Nancy leaves behind sons, Michael (Marlene) Hanson and Marc Hanson of Crookston, Minnesota; son-in-law Brian Anderson of Crookston; four grandchildren: Lorelei Jorgenson of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Krystle (Dominic) Haugen of Duluth, Minnesota, Blake Hanson of Crookston and Austin Hanson of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; five great-grandchildren: Mantana, Adalyn, Laila, Xavier and Gia.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband George who passed away September 20, 2014, her daughter, Kathryn "Kathy" Anderson who passed away on June 11, 2009, her brother Thomas "Tommy" Kiewel and her parents. Blessed be the memory of Nancy Ann Hanson.

A visitation for Nancy will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home on Monday, November 2, 2015 from 5-7:00pm with a prayer service at 7:00pm. The funeral service will be Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 11:00am at Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston, Minnesota, with lunch following the service.

Marie "Vivian" (Berry, Rude) Kees

1925-2015

June 29, 1925 - November 5, 2015

Marie "Vivian" Kees, 90, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2015 at MorningStar in Billings, Montana.

She was born June 29, 1925 to Orel and Ernestine Berry, in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota. Vivian attended elementary school at Perault Station, a one room school house just south of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota. As a kid, she enjoyed working outside with her dad, operating the tractor and feeding the livestock. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, in 1942.

On November 29, 1944, Vivian was united in marriage to Jerold K. Rude (Bud) in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. They were married for over forty years, living in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Denver, and back to EGF. Vivian was a member of Sacred Heart Parish for over 60 years and all six of her children attended Sacred Heart School. Vivian worked as a teacher's assistant and a librarian's assistant at Sacred Heart in East Grand Forks.

Vivian enjoyed going to the family cabin at Cass Lake, Minnesota. She loved fishing, entertaining, and BBQ's with everyone who came to the cabin over the years. She loved traveling, both here in the states and in Europe. She visited religious locations on five different tours to Europe with the Association of the Miraculous Medal.

Mom was an artist at her job of homemaking. She would plant a large garden every year and canned most of her harvest. With six children, she would cook and bake constantly, including buns and cinnamon rolls and a host of holiday treats for the freezer. Her annual lefse baking was a treat for all.

After Jerold's death, Vivian was married 15 years to Vernon Kees of Thief River Falls.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerold Rude; husband Vernon Kees; son Richard Rude; granddaughter, Jodi Raymond; sister Orella Berry Mischel; brothers Ernest and Norman Berry.

Vivian is survived by her daughters Sheryl Rude Mesrour, Joan Rude Raymond Gone, Virginia Rude (Gary) Haberstroh; her sons R. Joseph (Kathy) Rude, and Robert (Cori) Rude; fifteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 9 with the Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. at Dahl Funeral Home in East Grand Forks. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Sacred Heart Church and School.

J. Larry Jasmer

1946-2015

Obituary

J. Larry Jasmer, 68, of Crookston, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, November 7, 2015 after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer at his home surrounded by his loving family. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 12, 2015 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Crookston. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday evening with a prayer service beginning at 6 p.m. at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston.

Larry Jasmer was born December 6, 1946 in Fosston, Minnesota, the son of Alvin and Lucille (Bredeson) Jasmer. He moved to Northeastern North Dakota where he grew up and attended school. Larry graduated from Walsh Country Agricultural School in Park River, North Dakota, and received a degree in Architectural Drafting from the North Dakota School of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota, in 1966. He worked for Dawn Construction in Fargo for three years and joined the National Guard. He was married to Linda Roeder at Hankinson, North Dakota, in 1968.

Larry owned and operated Hoople Lumber Company until 1996 and Cavalier Lumber until 2000. Larry worked for the Crookston Building Center as an assistant manager from 2000 until 2013. He continued to work part time until his illness forced him to retire.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Crookston and the Hoople American Legion. He loved to fish on Lake of the Woods, traveling, UND Hockey, the Wild and the Minnesota Vikings.

Larry is survived by his wife, Linda of Crookston; son, Jay of Kirkland, Washington; daughter Kristin (Shane) Tompkins of Madison Lake, Minnesota; brothers, Ron (Faye) of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Brad of Park River, North Dakota; sister, Gerri Elznic of Fargo and by his granddog Ginger.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Don Elznic.

David L. Olson

1953-2015

David L. Olson, age 62, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, November 8th, at the Arrowwood Residence in Bemidji, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 12th, at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Poplar Lake Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.com. The family prefers that memorials in David's name be made to NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) at www.nami.org.

David was born October 2, 1953, to parents Chester and Elaine Olson of rural Fosston. He graduated from Fosston High School in 1972. David threw hay bales, shoveled corn and grain, and milked cows on the homestead. He also worked as a carpenter.

A highlight of his life was helping with the dismantling of the Fosston grain elevator on Highway 2. David enjoyed keeping up with baseball and football. His facts and figures of ‘sports trivia’ was phenomenal, and his details were astounding.

David was a gentle soul, with a huge heart. He accepted life, as he fought the struggle of mental illness, and every day he would try to make a difference as he walked and talked to people. He knew that God was Sovereign and the He promised to strengthen us through all things. In his heart, he had the assurance of an everlasting life with Jesus.

David was a special part of our lives. He ran the course and crossed the finish line with courage, as Jesus called him Home. He allowed all of us to become more patient, understanding and compassionate.

David Lynn Olson entered the gates of Heaven on Sunday, November 8, 2015 on a clear, starry night in Bemidji, Minnesota at the age of 62 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chester Olson. He is survived by his mother, Elaine Olson; and his six siblings: Bruce (Diana) Olson, Rebecca (James) Flaherty, Craig (Jen) Olson, Cynthia (Darel) Gustafson, Lorrie (Pat) Harris, and Lois (Bob) Storey. He is survived by 19 nieces and nephews, and 17 grand nieces and nephews, as well as many cousins.

Pallbearers: Jim Flaherty, Darel Gustafson, Pat Harris, Michael Olson, Sean Storey, Aaron Cymbaluk, Brandon Gustafson, and Tyler Gustafson.

John Melvin Thompson

1948-2015

June 16, 1948 - November 6, 2015

John M. Thompson, 67 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Mayville Nursing Home, Mayville, North Dakota.

John Thompson was born June 16, 1948 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the son of Melvin and Fern Ann (Nerby) Thompson. He attended East Grand Forks Central High School where he graduated in 1966. John enlisted in the army and served his country for 20 years. He became disabled fighting in the Vietnam war. He received the Purple Heart, which was presented to him by 5 Star general, Westmoreland while recovering in the hospital. He was also presented the Bronze Star for saving his entire platoon while under enemy fire. After retiring from the army he graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in accounting. John loved to fish and hunt with family and friends.

He is survived by his two children, Jerry Thompson of Wichita, Kansas, and Sherry Thompson of Junction City, Kansas; sisters, Terry Thompson and Dawn (John) King, both of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; brother, Bob (Debora) of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and he was also loved by his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Service: Monday, November 16, 2015 at the Dahl Funeral Home 2029 Central Ave NW, East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Lester William Noss

1923-2015

April 2, 1923 - November 12, 2015

Lester William Noss, age 92, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Lester was born on April 2, 1923 in Gary, Minnesota to the late Peter and Hannah (Wold) Noss. He grew up and attended rural school in Gary, Minnesota. Afterwards, he enlisted in the United States Navy for two years. He attended school in Chicago and Fargo. On October 14, 1952 he was united in marriage to Maxine Gorder in Gary, Minnesota. He worked at Nocker Ryan Autobody in Fargo and in 1954 the family moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he worked for first, Sandy Body Shop and the Grand Forks Welding and Machine for 27 years until his retirement in 1988.

Following his retirement, Lester enjoyed music, so he bought an organ and enjoyed playing musical instruments. He joined the Barber Shop Quartet where he truly enjoyed singing. He also enjoyed crocheting and gardening along with traveling the United States visiting family and friends.

Lester is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maxine Noss of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; sons, Robert (Myrna) Noss of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Richard (Jolene) Noss of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; grandchildren, Kelsey Noss of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Lucas and Courtney Noss, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; and Jennifer Noss of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and three sisters, Cora Tveit of Seattle, Washington; Evelyn Michel of Kennewick, Washington; and Ragna Heidbrink of Yuma, Colorado.

Lester is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Oscar, Ludvig, Orville, Palmer, Selmer and Rueben; sisters, Bertha and Myrtle.

Virginia (Glaesel) Wall

1917-2015

Born: August 24, 1917
Died: November 17, 2015

Virginia Wall, 98, of Fertile, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at the Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, Minnesota.

She was born on August 24, 1917, to Robert and Martha (Meeke) Glaesel in Chicago, Illinois. Her family moved to Oak Park, Illinois, where she graduated from the Oak Park High School. Virginia began working for International Harvester as a secretary.

On February 15, 1941, Virginia was united in marriage to Kenneth Wall at Oak Park, Illinois. Because Kenneth was in the Air Force, Virginia lived with her parents until Kenneth was discharged. They moved to LaGrange, Illinois, and Virginia cared for her family and home. Following their retirement, she and Kenneth moved to Glen Ellyn, Illinois. During a trip to Florida, Kenneth died in 1973. Virginia continued to live in Glen Ellyn at her home until 2004, when she entered into Friendship Village. To be closer to her daughter, Karen, Virginia moved to Stephen, Minnesota, in 2011. As her health declined, Virginia moved to the Fair Meadow Nursing Home in 2013.

In her younger years, Virginia enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing cards with friends and family. She and Kenneth loved to dance and socialize with friends. As the years advanced, Virginia loved to care for her family and their home. Reading was a passion for Virginia as she read book after book. She was very active at St. John's Lutheran Church in LaGrange, Illinois. Spending time with family brought her much joy.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Karen (Peter) Carlson, Mentor, Minnesota, and formerly of Argyle, Minnesota; Kenneth (Barb) Wall, Hawthorn Woods, Illinois; five grandchildren: Tony (Jennifer) Carlson, Rob (Shanda) Carlson, Kristin (Chris) Jerome, Kelsey Wall, and Robyn Wall, and eight great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Charles Eichberger, Las Vegas, Nevada; and nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her sisters, Shirley and her husband, Herb, Powell and Bobbette Eichberger; and in-laws: George Wall and Dora Wall Wolf.

Memorial Services will be on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at 1:00 PM at the Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, Minnesota.

Gertrude A. "Gert"
(Olson) Martin

1919-2015

Obituary

Gertrude A. Martin, 95, Crookston, Minnesota was called to her heavenly home to live forever in glory on Sunday, November 15, 2015.

Gert, the daughter of Oscar and Anna (Nelson) Olson, was born in Whitman, North Dakota on December 2, 1919. She was baptized on January 11, 1920 as she received the promised blessing of being clothed with Christ. (Galatians 3:26) She was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Grand Forks in 1934.

She grew up and graduated from high school in 1938 in East Grand Forks. Gert married Harold Martin, a UND graduate, in Crookston at Our Savior's Lutheran Church parsonage on April 16, 1942. They were blessed with 64 years of marriage. They were wonderful parents to their four sons and daughters-in-law, Harold Earl and Jeannie Martin Jr. of Marion, Texas, The Rev. Gary and Peggy Martin of Del Rio, Texas, Dennis and Karen Martin of Crookston, Guy and Silvia Martin of Crookston. She is also survived by her sister Enid and Glenn Offerdahl of Largo, Florida, sister-in-law Marion Olson of Green Valley, AZ, and Darlene Olson of Jamestown, North Dakota. Gertrude was also blessed with eleven grandchildren, Todd (Taumi) Martin, Tara Martin, Sarah Martin, Keren (Greg) Mitchell, Abigail (Dathan) Mullins, Jonathan Martin, Christopher (Maggie) Martin, Derek (Jaclyn) Martin, Andrea (Chris) Martin Wilke, Birgetta Martin and Hallie Martin; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Gert dedicated herself to serving our Lord especially in her family and her church, Our Savior's Lutheran in Crookston. She enjoyed visiting the sick and the shut-in, active in the Ruth Bible study, an officer of the LWML afternoon ladies group, also the quilting group, as well as having taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her great-granddaughter Anna, seven brothers, George, Larry, Alvin, Richard, Oral, Curtis, Ronald, and sister Alva.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, November 20, 2015 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Crookston. Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral and Cremation Service in Crookston.

Michael O. Sauve

1944-2015

Michael "Mike" O. Sauve, 71, of Rudd, Iowa, died Thursday, November 19, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, November 24, 2015, at Epiphany Parish, Holy Family Catholic Church, 722 N. Adams, Mason City. Officiating will be Rev. John Gossman. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 pm, Monday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd ST. SE, Mason City. Following visitation Michael will be cremated. Michael O. Sauve was born on November 16, 1944, in Crookston, Minnesota, the son of Oscar and Palmire Sauve. He graduated from Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls in 1962, and then continued his education to become a Journeyman Lineman. He started his career with the Iowa Public Service and then focused on power line construction with Donovan Construction then L.E. Myers Power Line Construction. Mike then became the business manager for Local 55 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for several years.

Later he worked for Midland Construction as a field engineer, and then started his own company with his wife, Distribution Contractors, where he focused on electrical engineering until 2002. Following that he went to work for Power Plus Engineering out of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, which was later acquired by STAR Energy Services, LLC out of Alexandria, Minnesota. He retired in 2012.

Going out on a double blind date he met Kathleen E. Cunningham and he and Kathy were later united in marriage on May 29, 1965, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, Iowa. They lived in a few places but called Rudd their home and where they raised their three children.

Mike was known as a warm and funny guy spending much of his time off with family and friends. He loved being helpful and making people laugh.

His favorite hobby was building furniture which ended up furnishing most of his kids’ and grandkids’ houses. He was a smart guy and could figure out many problems that others could not. He often had a vegetable garden which he shared the fruits of his labor through canning, freezing and gifting.

He was a member of the former Mason City Elks lodge and served as a past president of the Rudd Lions Club. In his youth he played hockey in high school, and continued enjoying the sport watching the Minnesota Wild, and was a fan of the Vikings.

Those thankful in sharing Mike's life include his wife Kathy of 50 years, three children Carla Sauve, Nora Springs; Sheila and her husband Joel Schwarz, Chaska, Minnesota; Francis "Fritz" Sauve, Rudd, eight grandchildren: Ryan Hocken, Mariah Payne, Isaac Schwarz, the twins Nathan and Evan Schwarz, Julianna, Hannah and Kaden Sauve, his favorite great-granddaughter Aubrey Hocken, a great grand on the way, his two sisters Lorraine Schmidt-Brown, Red Lake Falls, Minnesota; Mary Jane Kellenberger, Cloquet, Minnesota; two brothers, Jimmy (Elizabeth) Sauve and Jerry (Marlene) Sauve, almost 50 nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

His parents, one sister Agnes Lambert, and nine brothers, Alfred, Delphis, Edmund, Eli, George, Harvey, Omer, Robert, William, and twin sisters preceded him in death.

Biography--

Marvin Staus Sr., 63, of Grand Forks, North Dakota passed away on Friday, November 20, 2015 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Marvin (Marv) Staus was born October 20, 1952 in Fosston, Minnesota, the son of Gilford and Marcelline (Swavee) Staus Sr. He grew up in Grand Forks and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1970. Although he worked various jobs, including construction and King Leos restaurant, he spent the last 37 years working for Simplot Growers Solutions, where he was currently employed.

He married Debbie Lowe in Grand Forks on September 1, 1979. Although he enjoyed bowling, taking vacations and watching the Green Bay Packers and Fighting Sioux, Marv demonstrated the most devotion to his family, especially his Grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Debbie of Grand Forks, children, Jeremy (Phyllis Tanke) Staus, Lisa (Justin) Haskamp, Marsha (Brad) Brouillet and Marvin (Crystal) Staus Jr., all of Grand Forks, eight grandchildren, J.R., Keyra, Logan, Erica, Joslynn, Emma, Sydney, and Liam, a sister Marlene Glasgow of Reno, Nevada, brothers, Gilford Staus Jr., of Lake Crystal, Minnesota, and Ronald Staus of Aurora, Colorado, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Wayne and a brother in law Ed Glasgow.

Leonard Vernon Bergan

1927-2015

Obituary

Leonard Vernon Bergan, died December 3, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. He closed his life of eighty-eight years, the last ten of which he was retired and enjoyed living on Bear Trap Lake three miles west of Amery, Wisconsin.

Leonard was born August 17, 1927, to Leander and Alma Bergan at the family farm three miles north of Maddock, North Dakota. Leonard received, from his father, his first lessons in the sacredness of the land, the integrity of work and the value of perseverance as he worked beside him planting and harvesting the fields. He graduated from Benson county Agricultural School in 1945.

Following graduation, Leonard served in the U.S. Navy serving most of the time in China, Japan and Korea. Upon returning home, he attended Dakota Business College and North Dakota State University.

His first position was as a retail salesman for Standard Oil company in Devils Lake, North Dakota. In 1955 he joined First National Bank in Crookston, Minnesota. Four years later he accepted an offer from R.T. McCulla of a partnership in the John Deere dealership in Crookston In 1963 he purchased McCulla's interest and became sole owner of Crookston Implement until he sold the dealership and retired in 1996.

Leonard was dedicated to the interests of the farm equipment industry and worked diligently on its behalf. In 1969 he was elected to the Minnesota-South Dakota Retail Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association Board of Directors and served as its President in 1977. In 1976 he was elected to the National Retail Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association Board of Directors and served as Chairman of the Legislative Committee. In 1983 He was elected President of the National Retail Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association. He also served, for a number of years, on the John Deere Company Dealer Advisory Counsel.

Throughout his business career Leonard was involved in the insurance and banking industries. He was elected in 1981 to the Board of Directors of Federated Mutual Insurance company of Owatonna and served in that capacity for twenty one years. He also served as a Director of First National Bank in Crookston for twenty years.

Although Leonard was interested and participated in many things on the state and national level nothing was dearer to him than his home community of Crookston, Minnesota. He was very active and served on the local hospital, school and college boards, committees and fund drives.

His earlier years were busy with service in the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was President in 1959 during which time he was named the Outstanding Jayce President in the state of Minnesota.

He was a member of the Lions, Eagles, American Legion and Knights of Columbus.

He was honored by his community in 1970 when they named him King Agassiz of West Polk County for the Red River Valley Winter Shows. In 1984 they again honored him by choosing him as the Grand Marshal for the Pioneer Day Parade in Crookston.

In his leisure time Leonard liked nothing better than a sunny day on a great golf course! He also had fulfilled his life long dream of flying when, in l978, he earned his private pilots license.

All of these activities Leonard found rewarding and fulfilling but his greatest treasure was his family.

He married Patricia Vaughn in 1952. They had five children. Patricia died in l971.

Leonard married Jacqueline Syrup in 1972. Upon marrying Jacqueline his family was increased with the addition of her three sons.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; his children, Barry Bergan of Crookston, Minnesota, Bridgett (David) Stokka of Binford, North Dakota, Cynthia Bergan of Tucson, Arizona, Bart (Mary) Bergan of Amery, Wisconsin, Stacy (Marc) Rusling of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and stepsons, John (Bernie Foster) Lanz of Corvallis, Oregon, Thomas (Wendy Beaton) Lanz of Woodbury, Minnesota and James (Kelly) Lanz of Cottage Grove, Minnesota. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren; Nicholas (Samantha) Bergan, Johnathan (Lauren) Brekken, Leah Brekken, Josuha (Erin) Brekken, Catherine Brekken, Hannah Bergan, Patrick Bergan, Heather (R.J.) Morrisette, Michelle (Shawn) Cariveau, Trisha (Jeff) Peterson, Jordan Rusling, Carly Rusling; step-grandchildren, Meredith Jacqueline Beaton-Lanz, Matthew Beaton-Lanz, Carolyn Beaton-Lanz, Alysson Lanz and Jordan Haley; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Orin Bergan of Mesa, Arizona, and sister-in-law, Wilma Bergan of Yuma, Arizona.

Funeral Mass will be said at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 10, 2015, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston, Minnesota. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral and Cremation Service in Crookston with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.

Blanche Margaret (Brosseau) Passa

January 31, 1926 - November 19, 2015 Blanche Margaret (Brosseau) Passa, 89, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died Thursday, November 19, 2015 at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Blanche was born on January 31, 1926 in Bowesmont to the late Edward and Alma (Otstott) Brosseau, where she also grew up and attended school. She was united in marriage to Jacob Passa in Drayton, North Dakota, on November 25, 1946. She attended UND and then worked in the food service department there for 20 years until her retirement in 1991. Afterwards, she worked in the home healthcare industry and parented several foster children. In 1996 Blanche wrote about her childhood in her book called, "Once Upon A Little Town." Blanche took great comfort knowing that she was "just passing through" this life. Blanche is survived by her children, Annette (Bill) Pederson of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; Jay (Tracy) Passa of Bemidji, Minnesota; and Corinne Passa of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; and eight grandchildren; Billy (Faye) Pederson, Sherry, Derek Pederson, Seth and Levi Passa, Courtney (Casey) Schaeffel, Josh Jerome, Jessica (Adam) Feist; several great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Herbie, Glenn, Roberta, Dorothy, and Lucille; husband, Jacob Passa on October 3, 1998; and daughter, Phyllis Jerome on August 1, 1997. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials are preferred.

Bryan Daril Hoffman was born April 7, 1980 in Crookston, Minnesota, the son of Donald Hoffman and Debra Thompson Myatt. He grew up and attended school in Crookston where he's lived his entire life. He worked for American Crystal Sugar Company in Crookston and was a proud member of the Bakery Confection Tobacco and Grain Millers union.

Bryan was dedicated to his family and friends and truly believed those were the only things we really have in life and would defend them fiercely. He loved to be outdoors, hunting and fishing, and most of all working. He enjoyed being good at what he did and reveled in being "right." Bryan had no children, but he was so very proud of his nephew, Nash and his niece, Jennifer who live in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

Survivors include his father, Don (Gina Lenhart) Hoffman of Crookston, Minnesota; his mother, Debra (James) Myatt of Greenville, Illinois; his brother, Nathan Hoffman of Crookston, Minnesota; uncle Eugene Thompson, who served as his mentor throughout his life and by uncles and aunts Jim and Betty Murphy, Sam and Marilyn Olson and Kenneth, Debra Winger, and Asa Thompson and numerous cousins.

Bryan was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew Hoffman and by his grandparents, Darrell and Etta Borkenhagen and Earl and Lila Hoffman.

Marjorie Eilleen (Nordstrom) Flaten, age 89, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on December 2, 2015 at Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile, Minnesota.

Marjorie was born on September 23, 1926 in Drayton, North Dakota, to the late Albert and Hattie (Peterson) Nordstrom. She was married to Arthur Flaten on November 18, 1949 in Crookston, Minnesota, and afterwards the family settled in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. She worked at Frank's Cafe and then Valley Bag and Supply until her retirement in 1991. In her free time she enjoyed her travels, old time music, gardening, scrapbooking, word search puzzles, flowers, and going to lunch with her family and friends. She was also a long time member of First Lutheran Church in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Marjorie is survived by her son, Ronald (Shelly) Flaten of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; daughter, Linda (Edward) Brown of Spring Lake Park, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and brother, Raymond (Beverly) Nordstrom of Spearfish, South Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Flaten; parents, Albert and Hattie Nordstrom; and infant brother Robert Nordstrom.

Robert Allan Rosten, age 68, of Crookston, Minnesota, passed away Monday, November 16, 2015 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston.

Robert Rosten was born October 14, 1947 to Harold and Grace (Norland) Rosten in rural Fertile, Minnesota. He attended school in Fertile until moving to Warren in 1957 - 58. After graduating from warren high school he resided in theif river falls before moving to East Grand Forks and working for Western potato. He also worked at a fergus falls dairy before moving to Crookston in 1972. He worked at occupational Developmenat center for a period of time. He was currently living in Crookston.

His favorite pastime was hanging out at the M&H station and making new friends. He was a very social person and always willing to lend a helping hand, and was known for his outgoing personality. Robert was a very proud and loving son and brother who deeply cared for his family and friends, His family is very proud that bob wanted to be an organ donor, and his wishes were honored.

Survivors include his mother, Grace Rosten; sisters, Lenora (Archie) Nelson, Beverly Knoll (Ralph), Brenda Pokrizwinski (Roland); and Brother Gregory Rosten (Jessica). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by sister Karen Brault; father, Harold Rosten; paternal grandparents, Palmer and Selma Rosten; and maternal grandparents, Alex and Elvera Borland.

Robert Walker "Bob" Rudh

1947-2015

Robert "Bob" Walker Rudh, age 68, of Crookston, Minnesota, completed his time here on earth on November 21, 2015.

Bob was born on September 19, 1947, to the late Robert and Fyrne (Purvis) Rudh. He grew up in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, where he attended Sacred Heart High School. After graduation, he served in the US Army for three years where he was stationed in Hamburg, Germany. Upon being discharged he worked at the family owned and operated Rudh Brothers Furniture store and eventually returned to school. He graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and History; afterwards, taking a position with the Northwest Correctional Institution in Crookston, Minnesota, in the education department where he worked until his retirement in 2009.

Bob loved music, especially the Beatles, as well as reading and was a very talented writer. He was a lover of any and all sports but above all he held a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews, and they in turn adored their uncle. He was a kind and gentle man and will be fondly remembered and very deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Bob was predeceased by his parents and twin brother, William. He is survived by his brother, Richard (Rhandi) Rudh of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; sister, Jodi (James) Nagle of Fargo, North Dakota; nieces, Laura Nagle and Kelly Kossett; and nephews Daniel Nagle and Michael Rudh.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

Bernard John (Barney) Selzler, 76, Crookston, Minnesota, passed away on Monday November 23rd, 2015 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota, with his family at his side. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, November 30, 2015 at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral and Cremation Service in Crookston, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston, Minnesota.

Bernard was born in 1939 in Strasburg, North Dakota, the oldest son of John and Mary (Schmidt) Selzler. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Bismarck, North Dakota in 1957 and served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1961.

He graduated from Bismarck Junior College with an A.A. degree in Liberal Arts in 1963; from Minot State College with a B.S. in English in 1965; from Texas A & M, Commerce (East Texas State University) with an M.S. in American Literature in 1971 and with an Ed.D. in British Literature in 1974. He taught English and Speech at Grand Forks Central High School from 1966-1969 and taught Composition, Business Writing, Literature, and Grammar at the University of Minnesota, Crookston from 1969-2009. He was promoted to professor in 1989.

He married Carma (Brandner) on November 2, 1974 in Crookston, Minnesota where he lived for the remainder of his life. He is survived by a daughter, Nicolee (Gene) Irelan, Crookston, Minnesota; a son, Darin (Chandra) Selzler, Crookston, Minnesota; by five grandchildren, Amanda Meier, Desirae, and Dallas Seeger; Kaitlin and Jade Selzler; By four great-grandchildren, Hayley and Landon Meier, Leah Lee, and Brantley Avritt; a brother, Kenneth (Bonnie) Selzler, Bismarck, North Dakota, and his children, Steven (Mary) and Daniel Selzler, and Wade (Brandi) French; a sister Dorothy (Henry) Baca, Westminster, Colorado, and their children, Kevin and Stacy (Mia Tsuchimoto) Hendershot; and by his sister Nyla's children Sydney (Russell) Hardiman, Tanya (Marc) Alexander, Shana (Brian) Cosgrove, and their children's children.

Donald T. Johnson of Climax, Minnesota, passed away Saturday November 21, 2015, at his daughters' home with family by his side. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 2015, in the Climax Lutheran Church in Climax, Minnesota. Visitation Friday evening at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral and Cremation service in Crookston from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. Burial will be at Sand Hill Cemetery.

Don was born in Crookston, Minnesota, on February 18, 1937 to Charles and Mamie (Berg) Johnson. He graduated from Climax School in 1955. After graduation Don joined the Navy and served as a machinist mate on the USS Brinkley Bass. Don married Carol Scully and they were blessed with three children; Sandy, Brian and Shelly. They later divorced. Don married Beverly Erickson and they were blessed with Kim.

Don worked for Shafer Construction and later on managed Bentwood Golf Course in Climax Minnesota. In his early years Don enjoyed basketball, boxing, softball and eventually golf. He loved the outdoors -- especially hunting and fishing. Don had a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed many music varieties, especially bluegrass and gospel. He was an active member at the VFW's in Monticello and in Crookston; and also the American Legion in Fisher Minnesota.

He will be remembered as a hardworking, strong willed man, who loved telling stories of days past and joking with his grandchildren. Don was also known to never pass up a game of dice or cards or a trip to the casino.

He is survived by his children, Sandy (Mick) Herkenhoff; Brian Johnson; Shelly Werden (Marshall); Kim (Jim) Cote; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Siblings, Carol (Randy) Chaffee; Jimmy (Marlys) Johnson; Darrell (Peggy) Johnson; and Bobby (Joyce) Johnson.

Don was preceded in death by his wife Bev; grandson Dominic Herkenhoff; Brother Carl Johnson; Sisters Sonja Tweeten and Linda Lou Johnson; and nephew John Johnson.

Evelyn M. Schmechel, age 92 of Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2015 in Fargo, North Dakota, under the care of The Red River Valley Hospice.

Evelyn Marie Schmechel was born on February 17, 1923 in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, the daughter of Pius and Caroline (Usselman) Bertsch. Evelyn grew up and attended school in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. On July 25, 1975 she was united in marriage to Howard Schmechel in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She worked for the Westward Ho in Grand Forks before retiring in 1985. Evelyn is survived by a sister, Shirley (Donald) Sorenson of Fargo, North Dakota, along with many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard on July 17, 2009 and one sister Betty Egstad.

Benjamin Elmer Smith, age 70, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at his home in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Ben was born on June 3, 1945 in Morris, Minnesota, to the late Clarence and Ruth (Hills) Smith. He was raised in Manvel, North Dakota, and graduated from Central High School in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Afterwards, he honorably served his country in the US Marine Corp. He then attended Kundred Aviation School in Fargo, North Dakota.

On October 5, 1974 he was united in marriage to Cheryl Nelson in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. During his career hew worked for Stones Mobile Radio, Stans Communication and finally for the City of East Grand Forks for 32 years until his retirement in 2009. He was a very active member of the East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3817 and served as its Commander for 3 years.

Ben is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Cheryl Smith of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; brother, Douglas (Joyce) Smith of Centertown, Kentucky; sisters, Virginia (Larry) Hartse of Arizona City, Arizona, and Ann Marie Buckley of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Godsons, Dillon Nelson and Sam Garcia; nephew, Timothy; and niece, Angela. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Curtis Smith.

Hazel Laurean (Sistad) Bjorge

Hazel Laurean (Sistad) Bjorge, age 97, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, formerly of Buxton, North Dakota, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Woodside Village in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Hazel was born on February 5, 1918 on the family farm in Benville Township in Beltrami County, Minnesota, to the late Joel Melvin and Mina "Minnie" Tolena (Bye) Sistad. She was raised on the family farm and attended country school. She moved from Grygla, Minnesota, to Buxton area around 1937 to work on the Tom Carson farm.

It was in this time that she met the love of her life Ardell Hamlin Bjorge and the couple was united in marriage on July 30, 1938 in Crookston, Minnesota. Afterwards, the couple settled in Buxton where they farmed their entire lives and raised their eight children. They retired from farming in 1982 but remained on the farm and travelled all over during the winter months, until Ardell passed away on April 29, 1993. Hazel then remained on the farm until the fall of 2013 when she relocated to Valley 4000 in Grand Forks, ND.

Hazel is survived by her children, Marlys Erickson of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; Audrey (Merlyn) Nettum of Cummings, North Dakota; Karlyn (Marvin) Gunderson of Laguna Niguel, CA; Chyril (Vincent) Goldade of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Sandra (Gerald) Floberg of Dilworth, Minnesota; David (Lenora) Bjorge of Buxton, North Dakota; and Danny (Arlene) Bjorge of Buxton, North Dakota 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; sisters Alma (Marvin) Foss of Mentor, Minnesota, and Adeline (Willard) Sletten of Thief River Falls, Minnesota; sister-in-laws, Lottie and Bernice Sistad, both of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, and Florence (Roy) Wegge of Fargo, North Dakota; and many more nieces, nephews, and cousins.

LaVerne "Lovey" Jesness

LaVerne "Lovey" Jesness, age 96, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, December 1st, at Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 4th, at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. LaVerne was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on April 1, 1919, to parents Erik and Dina (Evje) Nyberg. She attended country school in the Gully area until her freshman year, she went to school in Fosston one year and then transferred to Ballard High School, in Seattle, Washington. She lived with her sister, Florence. She returned to Fosston after graduation and attended business college in Grand Forks and married Jerry Jesness on July 1, 1941. After their wedding they moved to Seattle, where Jerry was employed at Boeing until he was drafted, at that time Lovie moved back to Fosston with their baby girl, Janet.

Lovie had various places of employment in the Fosston area, bookkeeper, office manager, typing medical records, until she and Edith Brink purchased Style Rite Village. They kept the women in the Fosston area in style for 20 years. During this time Lovie was also active in the Athenian Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Hope Lutheran Church Women’s groups, McDowell Club, Etc. After selling Style Rite, she spent her time becoming the "perennial volunteer."

Her favorite project was the East Polk County Heritage Center. Countless hours went into finding a house, moving and refurbishing it, filling it with period items, planning Heritage Days, adding other buildings, so much that her family and friends knew that if they wanted to find her they would first check the Heritage Center. She was also a hospital volunteer, started the Food Shelf, sold daffodils each year for cancer, made countless quilts with the Hope Lutheran Church women, tended to her house and gardens. Another of her greatest achievements was the Centennial Book. She and Jo Mark, spent countless hours of research documenting the history of the Fosston area and its inhabitants.

After suffering a stroke in 2000 she moved into the First Care Nursing Home on October 30th and resided there for the rest of her life. Our family will never be able to repay the staff at First Care for giving our mom, grandmother and great-grandmother such loving care for 15 plus years. They became her family here in Fosston.

She is preceded in death by her two sisters; four brothers; her husband, Jerry; and her daughter, Liz.

She is survived by her son, Thomas of Fosston; her daughter Janet and her husband Jim of Northfield, Minnesota; grandchildren, Eric Dale (Diane) of Reno, Nevada, Kristine Beale (Brad) of Shoreview, Minnesota, Karen Boardman (Steve) of Northfield, Minnesota; great grandchildren, Casey, James and Matthew Dale; Logan, Connor and Griffin Beale; Grant, Sam and Max Boardman.

Ronald Paul Vanyo

1945-2015

October 15, 1945 - December 3, 2015

Ronald P. Vanyo, age 70 of Larimore, North Dakota, passed away on Thursday, December 3rd, 2015 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Ronald Paul Vanyo was born on October 15, 1945 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the son of George and Emma (Mydlar) Vanyo. He attended school and graduated from Alvarado High School. Following his high school graduation he joined the United States Army and served our country from 1967 to 1971. Following his discharge from the United States Army, he returned to East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and worked for National T as a meat cutter.

On December 19, 1972 he was united in marriage to Dolores Avila in Crookston, Minnesota. He worked for Kmart Foods and Deer River Co-Op. They moved to Larimore in 1979 where he worked for Melby’s Jack & Jill. He then began employment for Guenthner’s Super Valu in Northwood, North Dakota, and retired in 2008. Ronald played guitar in various the bands including The Vibrations, The Kovar Band, and The Arrangers. He loved to watch the Minnesota Twins, play music, cards, and horseshoes with his family.

Ronald is survived by his loving wife Dolores of Larimore, North Dakota; two daughters, Christine (Erick) Peterson of Crystal, Minnesota, and Amanda Vanyo of Golden Valley, Minnesota, along with four grandchildren. Ronald is also survived by his siblings, Theresa (Dale) Telle of Warroad, Minnesota, Emily (Stan) Paschke of Mesquite, Nevada, Sylvester (Carol) Vanyo of Richfield, Minnesota, Emil (Theresa) Vanyo of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Thomas (Dio) Vanyo of Robbinsdale, Minnesota, Marge (Gwyndale) Bayne of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Mary Jones of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Kathy (Willie) Bayne of Alvarado, Minnesota, and Barb Horne of Fargo, North Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister Josephine; brothers: Conard, August and George Vanyo.

Beverly Ardis (Schroeder) Vidden

1936-2015

Beverly Ardis (Schroeder) Vidden, age 79, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, November 30, 2015 at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, Minnesota.

Bev was born on November 21, 1936 in Mallory, Minnesota, to the late John and Emma (Butenhoff) Schroeder. She was raised in Mallory, Minnesota, and attended country school there until 8th grade. She then graduated from high school in Crookston, MN and afterwards attended Bill’s Hair College.

On November 23, 1957 she was united in marriage to Milton Vidden in Fisher, Minnesota. Throughout her career she worked at Frank's Cafe, Altru Hospital, Ben Franklin, and owned and operated Bev’s Beauty Nook for over 20 years. She was also very active with the ladies auxiliary of the East Grand Forks VFW and American Legion holding the position of Secretary and then Auxiliary President at different times.

Bev is survived by her four sons: Bruce Vidden of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; Bryan (Anna) Vidden of Fargo, North Dakota; Burt Vidden of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; and Bradley Vidden of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters: Eleanor Lee of Park River, North Dakota; Leona (Lonnie) Sibbett of Jackson, Michigan; Karen (Gary) Barrious of San Jose, California; Viola (James) Brime of Farmington, Missouri; brother, John Schroeder of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and niece Wanda Silvia of Canton, Michigan; as well as many more nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Vidden; parents, John and Emma Schroeder; brothers, Melbourne and Theodore Schroeder; and grandson, Christopher Vidden.

Sharon (Mulcahy) Rude

Sharon Rude, 76, rural Beltrami, Minnesota, died on Monday, November 30, 2015, at her home.

Sharon was born on October 8, 1939, to Patrick and Charlotte "Lottie" (Westover) Mulcahy in Crookston, Minnesota. On February 14, 1958, she was united in marriage to Robert Rude at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Nielsville, Minnesota. They were married for 57 years. Over the years Sharon was involved in many activities, but she was always available to assist Robert with the farm work until they retired in 2010.

Sharon was devoted to her family, friends, community, and church. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and volunteering. Sharon served in many different leadership positions at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Beltrami, and volunteered her time with the WELCA quilters at Trinity Lutheran Church making quilts for those in need. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with Robert and their friends. Sharon was a talented ceramist, seamstress and quilter. She owned "Country Ceramics" and taught ceramics classes in the 1980’s and early 1990s, before closing her business to take care of her mother, Charlotte Mulcahy.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Robert, Beltrami, Minnesota; one daughter, Heidi (son-in-law, John) Rude-Sprynczynatyk, Eagan, Minnesota; several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Charlotte "Lottie" Mulcahy.

Funeral service will be on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Beltrami, Minnesota.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.

Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Beltrami, Minnesota.

Randall Joseph Driscoll

1953-2015

Randall "Randy" Joseph Driscoll, age 62, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died Monday, December 7, 2015 at his home.

Randall Driscoll was born on March 30, 1953 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the son of the late Raymond and Adele (Chwirut) Driscoll. He was raised in East Grand Forks, Minnesota and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School for 10 years. He graduated from East Grand Forks Senior High School in 1971 and moved to Florida to study civil engineering. Afterwards he returned to East Grand Forks where he farmed his entire life. Later he received his pilot's license and loved to fly. He then earned his license as a Boiler Engineer and learned how to run steam engines from the University of Rollag Steam School in Rollag, Minnesota. He was active in East Grand Forks, Minnesota Heritage Days, was a motorcycle enthusiast, and loved history and mechanical things. He was also enthusiastic about Antique Automobiles and Firearms. He was also a member of the NRA in good standing. On March 11, 2005 he was united in marriage to Cindy Qualley in Maui, Hawaii.

He is survived by his wife Cindy of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; sons, Justin (Dawn) Lunski of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Brandon Lealos of Fargo, North Dakota; grandchildren, Brody and Bella Lunski of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; siblings, Kevin Driscoll, of Maple Grove, Minnesota; Meredith (Glenn) Faken, of Greer, SC; Bruce (Cynthia) Driscoll, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; and Blane (Karen) Driscoll, of Dassel, Minnesota; his pet African Grey Parrot Beeker, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Adele Driscoll.

Mertle Emily Scully, 81, of Fertile, Minnesota, passed away Friday, December 4, 2015 at Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile Minnesota, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 11, 2015 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gentilly, Minnesota. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral and Cremation Service in Crookston with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Gentilly, Minnesota.

Mertle Emily Sterger was born June 2, 1934 at Fisher, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Johanna (Butenhoff) Sterger. She attended Crookston Central High School and was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gentilly. She was united in marriage to Roy Scully May 20, 1958 in Dubuque, Iowa. The couple made their home in rural Gentilly and in 1966 moved into the home that Roy built in Gentilly. She was a homemaker and mother. Later they moved to Fertile, Minnesota, where she worked many years at Mac's Cafe.

She was a very talented seamstress and made many dresses, she also enjoyed crocheting, making blankets and playing cards. Mertle loved her children and spent much time with them and her extended family. She taught "all" of her family that blood is not what made them all family, it was the time spent together that bonded them and made sure that each one received a crocheted blanket from her. Her quick wit and ability to make everyone smile and laugh was what made her "Grandma". She is greatly missed by everyone whose life she touched.

Family surviving include her children, Danny (Karin) Duquette, Karen (John) Lawson, Kathryn Swenson, Korene (Steve) Maynard, Dale (Roxanne) Scully; son in law Keith Swenson; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Linda Sterger and Ann Montoya: and very close friends, Dale and Carol Mackowick and Ron and Dawn Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy; brothers, Harold, Ed and Jerry Sterger; a sister in law, Edna Sterger; her sister, Irene Green and brother in law, Elmer Green; a son, Duane and twin great-grandsons.

Cheryl Asher

Cheryl Asher, age 55, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2016 after a battle with cancer. No services will be held at this time. The Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston assisted with the arrangements and messages of condolence may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.com.

She spent her youth in East Holland, Illinois, and Shell Lake, Wisconsin, before moving to Minnesota as an adult. Cheryl was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Quite possibly the only thing she loved more than the Twins was her son Jason, whom she was devoted to throughout her life. Her many other interests included Garrison Keillor, knitting, crafting, reading, the Dick Van Dyke show, and Jon Stewart of the Daily Show.

She appreciated a wide range of music, such as Joe Cocker, James Taylor, Vince Gill, Styx, Donny Osmond, and many other artists. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. Her laughter still resounds in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Cheryl had a deep sense of caring for others, as was evidenced by her career in nursing. She worked for many years at the Pioneer Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota, as well as at RiverView Health in Crookston, Minnesota. Her caring nature and love of knowledge will continue after her death, as she donated her body to the University of Minnesota for medical research.

Cheryl leaves behind her son Jason (Jessica) Ruhl of Madison, Wisconsin; her special friend and former husband Lynn Asher of McIntosh, Minnesota; best friend Julaine Simpson of Albert Lea, Minnesota; brother Richard (Judy) Ruhl of Rosemount, Minnesota; sisters Susan (Joe DiFiore) Ruhl of Chicago, Illinois; and Kathy Kooy of Concho, AZ. She deeply loved her many nieces and nephews, and was a honorary grandmother to her grandnieces and grandnephew.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her beloved younger brother David Ruhl of Menomonie, Wisconsin, and her parents Robert and Ann Ruhl of Shell Lake, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers or monetary donations, we ask that you spread Cheryl's love by doing something kind for others.

Louie Lawrence Patterson

Louie Patterson, age 95, from Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Thursday, January 28th at Essentia Health First Care Living Center in Fosston, Minnesota. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, February 3rd at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Erskine with Rev. Michelle Miller officiating. Family will greet friends for one hour before the memorial service at the church on Wednesday morning. Interment of cremains will be at the Synod Cemetery near Erskine at a later date. Louie Lawrence Patterson was born on December 4, 1920, to parents Ira and Jenny (Reintsma) Patterson in Crookston, Minnesota.

Louie served in the United States Army during World War II in the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign. He entered the service on August 19, 1942 and received his Honorable Discharge on December 5, 1945.

Louie was united in marriage to Marie Bertha Mayer on November 17, 1948 in McIntosh, Minnesota. They made their home north of Erskine, Minnesota where they farmed for many years. Louie retired from farming in 1984 and they moved into Erskine. He was also a milk hauler for 35 years. Marie passed away on October 4, 2003.

Louie enjoyed reading and watching westerns, being with his family and gardening.

On Thursday, January 28, 2016, Louie passed away at Essentia Health First Care Living Center in Fosston, Minnesota at the age of 95 years.

He is survived by daughter, Linda (Kenny) Nelson and son, Gary (Denise) Patterson all of Erskine; grandchildren, Ulysses (Steph) Patterson, Raychel (James) Graham, Alisha (Bob) Anderson, Tim (Carissa) Sigdahl, Kyle Edgar, and Chad (Katy) Edgar; great grandchildren, Anthony, Autumn, Ty, Chesney, Jaxson, Bayleigh, Ivory, Talon, Link, and Meadow; sister-in-law, Elsie Patterson of Thief River Falls, Minnesota; and nieces and nephews.

Jeanette Evelyn (Wandschneider) Fenske

Jeanette Fenske, age 102, of Fosston, Minnesota, and Lengby, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, February 4th, at Cornerstone Residence in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9th, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby with the Rev. Gene Lillienthal officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Jeanette Evelyn Wandschneider was born on September 3, 1913 in Cass Lake, Minnesota to parents William and Mathilda Steindorf Wandschneider. She was raised in Rabey, Minnesota and graduated from high school in Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1930. After graduation she moved to Lengby with her family and worked in Lengby, Fosston, Grand Rapids and Minneapolis

Jeannette met her husband Ralph Fenske when they were members of Choristers in Grand Rapids. They were married February 24, 1952. In 1960 they moved to Lengby. Ralph died on August 17, 1966. Jeanette moved from the farm into Lengby with her two daughters. For many years, she worked at Gutterud's Hartz Store. She continued to live in Lengby until recent years when she lived at cornerstone Residence in Fosston. Jeanette was active in the community, serving as LIC president, ladies aide president and on the city council for many years and was a member of the homemakers club.

She had many varied interests. She enjoyed the outdoors especially anything to do with yard work, garden and flowers, providing altar flowers for Sunday services and of course picking berries, any kind but especially blueberries. She was known for her good cooking and much of the food was frozen from her garden. In younger years, she sewed, knitted and duck hunted. Jeanette made friends of all ages and enjoyed keeping in touch with them over the years. She much enjoyed socializing with her friends in Lengby and with all of her extended family, especially her granddaughters and great grandchildren. She will be remembered for her independence, positive outlook, adventurous spirit and genuine kindness.

Survivors include her two daughters, Jean (Mark) Bosacker of North Mankato, Minnesota, and Carla Albrecht of Bismarck, North Dakota; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jennifer (Michael) Granlie and their children, Gracyn, Avery, Evan and Liam; and Kristine (Peter) Moch and their children, Benjamin, Isaac, and Amelia Jeanette. Nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents; brothers, Herbert, Martin and Walter and infant brother; and sisters, Mata Kilborn and Phronie Olson.

Marvin "Marv" Thompson

1924-2016

Marvin "Marv" Thompson, age 91, passed away on Sunday, February 7th, at his home in Fosston, Minnesota after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 13th, at Hope Lutheran church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Friday, February 12th, at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the National Guard Honors Team. Marvin Duane Thompson was born August 5, 1924 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota to Walter and Rose (Kezar) Thompson. They lived in Thief River Falls, Minnesota until 1929. The family moved to Fergus Falls, Minnesota where they lived until 1937 when they moved to Minneapolis. In 1938 the family moved to Fosston, Minnesota where Walter bought a Red Owl grocery store. Marv attended Fosston High School where he graduated in 1942.

After graduation Marv attended Bemidji State College for one semester where he played football. That spring he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II from 1943-1946. Marv was an Aviation Radioman and tail gunner on the aircraft carrier Kadashan Bay and was involved in the Philippian invasion as well as other battles in the South Pacific and South China Sea. During one mission, his plane he was hit by Japanese anti-aircraft fire and took shrapnel to his back but was saved by the backpack that he was wearing. He received a purple heart and a commendation from T.C Kinkaid, the Vice Admiral of the U.S. Navy.

After the war Marv attended Concordia College from 1946-1949 where he played football and was one of the captains on the team. He was proud to be a Cobber. Marv met Barbara Larson at Concordia and they were married in 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Beltrami, Minnesota. They had 65 great years together.

After graduating from Concordia Marv accepted his first teaching position in Lakefield, Minnesota where he taught and coached. In 1951 they moved to Fosston where Marv was a teacher, driver education instructor and coach. He coached football, baseball and basketball for many years and also served as the athletic director until his retirement in 1987. In 1987 the community named the football field "Thompson Field" in his honor.

Marv served for 20 years as a fireman, was a member of the Rotary Club, American Legion and Hope Lutheran Church. Marv loved to golf, fish, hunt and spend time with Barb at the cabin on Cass Lake. Marv and Barb loved to travel and visited all 50 states as well as countries in Europe, Asia, South America and the South Pacific. He also enjoyed visiting with his coffee friends every morning and golfing with his team on Tuesdays.

Marv is survived by his three sons, Michael (Deb) Thompson, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Gary (Lori) Thompson, Valley City, North Dakota, and Steve (Natalie) Thompson, River Falls, Wisconsin, as well as his grandchildren, Philip Thompson, Bloomington, Minnesota, Christina Vecchio (Brian), Colorado Springs, CO, Kari Thompson, Horace, North Dakota, Jacob Thompson, River Falls, WI, and Melene Thompson, Bloomington, IN.

Marv was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, brother Lawrence, and parents Rose and Walt Thompson. Marv will be greatly missed. He was an outstanding man.

Agnes Carlson was born on June 8, 1916, in Roseau, Minnesota, to parents Knute and Alma (Engeberg) Espeseth. She grew up in Roseau where she attended school and continued to help out on the family farm. On April 5, 1952 she was united in marriage to John Carlson, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. They began farming in Litchville, North Dakota where they farmed for 22 years. After retiring, they moved to the city of Erskine, Minnesota in 1973. There they became members of Grace Lutheran Church where she was involved with the Ladies Mission Circle group and also the GLC Ladies Aid. Agnes loved to cook, bake, sew quilts, and meticulously tend to her lawn and vegetable & flower gardens. She always lived her life according to her father's advice, "Stay close to the Lord!"

In 1985 her husband John passed away and Agnes continued to live in their home until 2009, when she moved to Country Place Apartments near Erskine. In 2011, she became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Care Center where she resided until her death. Agnes passed away there on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at the age of 99 years, 8 months and 3 days.

She is survived by her brother Cliff (Dotty) Espeseth of North Eastham, MA and sister Irene Storey of Apple Valley, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, parents, brothers Clarence, Joe, and Ken Espeseth, and sister Ruth Hagen.

Elaine June (Olson) Olson

1924-2016

Died: February 14, 2016

Elaine June Olson, age 91, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, February 14th, at Essentia First Care Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19th, at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Poplar Lake Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the funeral on Friday at the church. Elaine was born on June 12, 1924 to Ted and Selma Olson in King Township in McIntosh. She attended the Oakland country school and Asphalt country church. Elaine graduated from Fosston High School in 1942.

Elaine married Chester Olson in 1945, and they embarked on the life-time work of farming and raising their family of seven children. Their farm was in Columbia Township.

Any one that knew Elaine knew that she was the wearer of many hats both literally and figuratively. She always wore a hat to shield herself from the sun after her diagnosis with Melanoma. The many hats in her life included being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, quilter, seamstress, gardener, cake decorator, motion choir director, church secretary, church flower arranger, neighborhood welcome lady, and Head Start volunteer "grandma". She was employed as a waitress, clothing store saleswoman, Nurse's Aide, and as an Accredited Record Technician for 24 years at Fosston Hospital. She also was a 1990 U.S Census Bureau worker and worked at the Fosston DAC and Fosston Group Home.

Elaine June Olson entered the glory of her eternal home on "Sweethearts Day" at the age of 91, February 14, 2016. Elaine had been a resident of the First Care Living Center, in Fosston, since March 2015.

She is survived by six children: Bruce (Diana) Olson, Rebecca (James) Flaherty, Craig (Jen) Olson, Cynthia (Darel) Gustafson, Lorrie (Pat) Harris, and Lois (Bob) Storey. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Olson, and her son, David Olson.

Elaine was a role model in so many ways, she lived life abundantly, with every ounce of her being, always using her gifts and talents to enhance life, and teaching others along the way, (including Polka dancing and nickel digging). She had a simple but solid unshakable faith and could be feisty when she needed to be. She was a family treasure and leaves behind a legacy, not easily forgotten.

Psalm 119:105 "Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path."
