Dad was born June 1, 1933 in Tuthill, South Dakota to Clarence and Hazel (Bond) Miller the 4th of nine children. He grew up and attended school in Martin, South Dakota. That is where he met Billie Rae Knuth who he married August 28, 1952 in Denver, Colorado on his lunch break from his job at a local gas station. Dad then split his time between Topock, Arizona and Golden Lake near Hatton, North Dakota. After the winter of 1996-97 he said he never wanted to see another snowflake and he didn't until 2014 when he wasn't able to get to Arizona as early as he did before. Resided in Crookston, Minnesota

Obituary--

Lester E. Samuelson, 86, of Crookston Minnesota, passed away Saturday October 17, 2015 in Riverview Hospital. A loving husband to his wife Bernice, theirs was a devoted partnership spanning over six decades and bringing forth three children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchildren.

"Sammy," as many knew him, was born July 20, 1929 in Crookston, MN the third son of Richard Samuelson and Helen Samuelson (Olson). He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith along with his brothers Robert, Charles, and Roger and attended country school. Soon after his graduation from the AC at Crookston in August of 1949, Lester was united in marriage to his lifelong love, Bernice Tinkham at Fisher Lutheran Church surrounded by family and close friends.

A short time later in 1950 at the height of the Korean War conflict, Lester's service for the National Guard led him to basic training and leadership school as a sergeant, after which he was sent to Korea and promoted to platoon sergeant. During this time the US fought under a United Nations banner with twenty other nations as well as South Korea, united by the common ideal 'Freedom is not Free!' While in Korea, Lester sustained an ankle injury from a nearby landmine explosion. He spent ninety-seven days on the North Korean frontlines with the 2nd Indianhead Infantry Division. He served his country boldly and with courage, returning home in 1953.

Lester returned to his native Crookston spending over twenty years with American Crystal Sugar Company as an Agriculturalist. Together he and Bernice raised their three children Julie (Taylor), Janna (Samuelson), and Jon (Samuelson). The family has fond memories of a family trip in a pea soup green Oldsmobile to California to see friends, relatives and visit Disneyland.

Throughout his life, Sammy also developed a love of flying. Completing many hours of flight time and rigorous testing, he became the proud owner of two Cessna prop planes. Sammy possessed both a commercial and instrument rating due to his accomplishments in flight. He often took Bernice or friends on local trips around Northern MN, or to see relatives across the US.

Lester and Bernice left Crookston in 1978 to operate Westrum's Clothing in Albert Lea, MN. This opportunity allowed the couple to share in the joint venture of running a business and forged a new connection in their partnership.

Upon his retirement Lester and Bernice continued to explore the US together in their motorhome. They enjoyed summer trips to Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada, for fishing, and spent winters in their second home in Bonita Springs, Florida. The pair also enjoyed many Christmas holidays with their children and grandchildren in Tennessee and Alabama.

In 1993, Lester and Bernice returned to MN permanently and to their final home on Maple Lake. Both enjoyed watching the birds nest in the nearby trees and visiting with neighbors who would often stop over for coffee.

Sadly, Bernice, his wife of sixty-five years passed away in March of 2015. Lester now joins his beloved wife in eternity.

Lester is survived by his three children: Julie Taylor of Destin, FL, Janna Samuelson of Nashville, TN and Jon and April Samuelson of Destin, FL. Bennie Willard Boyer, the son of Russell Boyer and Patricia (Borgen) Boyer was born in Warroad, Minnesota, on August 24, 1960. He was raised in Williams and then moved to Warroad, where he lived with Ben and Christine Skrivseth until the ninth grade, then moving to Thief River Falls until he was 18 years old. At that time he moved to Crookston and has lived there until the time of his death.

Bennie was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was creative as well doing ceramics and beading, creating gifts for family and friends. He also loved to garden and tell stories. The fish or deer became larger with every telling of the story. Playing jokes and teasing was another of Bennie's favorite things to do, no one was safe when it came to this. He loved his family and friends very much and enjoyed spending time with them when he could.

He always looked forward to the holidays, as this brought the family together and he could tell his stories to a new audience. Each day for Bennie was a new chance to meet people at his job at the Novel Cup, playing pool and visiting on those days that he worked. He enjoyed watching movies (westerns) mostly, he also liked to cook and would help prepare meals at the group home when he could. Bennies favorite thing to eat was dill pickles and he would sneak them whenever he could, even though they were bad for his health.

Travis Vincent Brekken

1977-2015

November 30, 1977 - October 25, 2015

Resided in Crookston, Minnesota

Obituary--

Travis Vincent Brekken, 37, of Crookston, Minnesota died Sunday, October 25, 2015 after a long and courageous battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Travis was born in Crookston, Minnesota on November 30, 1977, the son of Vincent and Marie (Enslin) Brekken. He was baptized and confirmed at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Crookston. He attended Crookston public schools through high school, graduating in 1996. While attending school he and his classmates broke down social barriers and paved many new trails for handicap access. During high school he served as the baseball team's assistant manager and supported the team at home and on the road. He was also active in the choir and travelled with the group to Florida where they performed at Disney World.

Travis and his companion dog, Carmel, were able to cross the stage together with the rest of the class at graduation using a new ramp that was built by the students and teachers at the school. Following high school, Travis attended the University of Minnesota, Crookston, where he studied computer science and obtained his 'computer guru' status among family and friends for whom he was quick to offer assistance and support. Travis had a wide web of friends and family that he valued and cherished and was active in maintaining those relationships via a Facebook, email, and online games.

Throughout high school and college, Travis was an active volunteer at Riverview and Villa St. Vincent nursing homes. Growing up, Travis would attend Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) summer camps as well as participate in annual Jerry Lewis MDA telethon fundraisers. Make-a-Wish Foundation granted Travis and his family a trip to Disney World, a magical trip that led to several return visits. Travis also enjoyed being with his father and uncles on the farm, where he would ride in the trucks and learn some colorful language. He had been part of a truck brigade from Crookston hauling sandbags to East Grand Forks fighting the flood of 1997 and was in one of the last trucks to leave as the dike gave way.

Travis's favorite pastime was his car hobby. Travis had a love for cars, especially Fords, which began at a young age with his Uncle Curt and his Merkur sports car and expanded in his teenage years when he acquired a 1971 yellow fastback Mustang Mach I. A few years later, the Mustang was 'stolen' but later returned to him fully restored to mint condition by the Crookston Classic Cruisers car club as a surprise 20th birthday gift. It was the first time his family had seen him truly speechless, his only words being, "It's so shiny!" Words could not express the gratitude Travis and his family felt for all of the people and local businesses that helped in that project.

His second car purchase was a 2003 yellow Mustang Mach I. After that, he coordinated the restoration of a 1955 Mercury Monterey that he acquired from his cousin Mike. He later obtained a 1979 Ford F150 pickup and most recently purchased a 2015 Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Ford Mustang, which was number 877 of 1, 964 vehicles made and signed by Bill Ford. He enjoyed taking his collection to auto shows throughout the year and bringing his 2003 Mustang to Brainerd International Raceway where his friends drove it for him in drag races. He would often spend hours on the computer assisting others research and find old car parts for their projects.

His passion for cars also led to his meeting Jay Leno on three occasions, including a personal tour of Jay's auto collection and workshop. His most recent car memorabilia came from a friend who arranged to have NASCAR owner Jack Roush autograph a photograph of Travis's Mustangs as well as provide two commemorative 'hero coins'. In addition to being an avid Ford man who enjoyed good natured ribbings with his Chevy and Dodge friends, Travis was also a diehard UND Sioux hockey fan. He was a season ticket holder and would watch or listen to the games on the TV or radio when he could not attend. Even though he wasn't feeling well he was able to listen to the Sioux win on Friday and Saturday night before he passed away Sunday morning.

His family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Ring and many specialists at Sanford who helped keep Travis with us as long as he was. Also, to his personal care attendants over the years who were Travis's arms and legs for so long. And, to Travis's classmates for their support both during his school years and after. We never thought of Travis as being handicapped but rather looked at everything he could do in spite of being in a wheelchair.

Travis is survived by his parents Vincent and Marie (Enslin) Brekken; sister Jocelyn Brekken; paternal grandmother, Wanda Brekken; aunts and uncles Robert and Renee Wilbur, Roger and Edie Brekken, Marcie and Pat McConville, Dennis and Bev Brekken, David and Shirley Brekken, Kristie Brekken Ricard, Greg and Maggie Brekken, Mark and Jody Brekken, Phil Brekken, Chris and Bob Olson, Michelle and Elliot Solheim; and many cousins.

Travis was preceded in death by his grandparents Herman and Hazel Enslin, and Albert Brekken; uncles Curtis Brekken, and Gerald Brekken; and cousin Jeremy Brekken.

Glendora H. (Erikson) Ficken

1921-2015

Born: December 31, 1921
Died: November 03, 2015

Glendora Harriet Ficken, 93, of Fertile, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at Riverview Health, Crookston, Minnesota.

Glendora was the first born child of Elma and Herman (Erickson) Erikson, in rural Fertile, Minnesota, on December 31, 1921. She attended a Nelson Country School, District 70, not far from their home. After her 8th grade graduation, she went to Northwest School of Ag (the AC) in Crookston, Minnesota, through 1940.

In 1940, she looked for jobs in St. Paul, Minnesota and Seattle, Washington. She worked as a waitress at a Walgreens, in St. Paul. She became a Nanny for a Navy Commander and did her part in support of World War II by working at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle.

Glendora married Art Gundell in January 1946, in Seattle; they had three children: Arthur, Judy and Robert. After her husband, passed away in 1950, she returned to Fertile to raise her three children. She worked in Fertile at the Boarding House, the poultry packing plant, and seasonally picked potatoes near Ada.

On June 30, 1955, Glendora married Frederick Ficken at the First Evanger Lutheran Church in Fertile. They made their home 14 miles southwest of Elwood, Nebraska. Here they raised dairy and beef cattle, hogs, chickens and geese. Glendora was known for her garden products, wonderful cinnamon rolls, and goose down feather pillows. She loved to sew clothes for her kids. In August of 1958, she gave birth to her 4th child, Julie. Around 1962 her mother, Elma, decided to stop making rugs and gave Glendora her rug weaving machine. She became well known for her rug making. Glendora was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in rural Elwood and worked with the Ladies Aid and Altar Guild.

With the hardships of farming in Nebraska, Fred and Glendora decided to move to rural Fertile in 1967, and purchased a farm just northeast of Fertile. They joined St John's (Green Meadow) Lutheran Church in rural Ada, Minnesota, where she again served with the Ladies Aid and Altar Guild. Glendora worked at Lee's Nursery, picking potatoes near Ada, and the Fair Meadow Nursing Home. She had a great passion for animals, big or small, healthy or sick, she loved them all.

Our mother had a way of always putting other people's needs first, always glad to give a helping hand with chores on the farm, 4-H, FFA, dog training, taking care of her parents, neighbors, friends and grandchildren. Her humble and serving attitude came from her relationship with the Lord that led her through times of meager means and times of plenty. Whatever she had was shared to be a blessing to others. A fine lady of the Lord.

Glendora is survived by Art (Eileen) Gundell, Union Dale, PA; Robert (Bev) Gundell, Eustis, NE; and Julie Rensland, Minot, North Dakota; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister Betty Floan, Fertile, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews.
