Rayome Clark Koehler

Born: May 26, 1938
Died: September 01, 2015

Rayome Koehler, age 77, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, September 1st, at McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh, Minnesota. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.com.

Rayome Clark Koehler was no ordinary person. Born in Crookston, Minnesota, on May 26, 1938, he demonstrated exceptional musical talent while attending high school in Erskine, earning superior ratings for his vocal performances repeatedly at both district and state competitions. As a unique distinction, Rayome was selected from hundreds of vocal and instrumental soloists to perform at an evening concert as a culmination of the district-level music festival at Fosston. He sang "O Sole Mio" in Italian.

Rayome decided to pursue teaching as a career and attended teacher training school in Thief River Falls, after which he began teaching at Sunnyside School in rural Fosston. He graduated from Bemidji State College and began teaching elementary school in Fosston for almost two decades. In keeping with his artistic talent and keen business acumen, he opened Koehler Floral in Fosston and eventually opened branches in both Mahnomen and Fertile.

A passionately community service-oriented person, Rayome founded the Embassy Community Center in the 1980s (located in the old Baptist church) and served as both director and board president. The Center became a hub of activity over the years -- the site of senior meals, the Fosston Community Theater, the Singles' Christian Fellowship, area musical concerts, and meals for the homeless. "I want to make sure that people in the community aren't lonely," Rayome said. He also founded the Fosston Garden Club and was an active participant in the Sons of Norway.

Rayome turned to the local press to disseminate information and give readers a sense of community. He contributed inspirational columns and area news to the Erskine Echo, Thirteen Towns, McIntosh Times, and the Fertile Journal for years, always with a goal of keeping people connected.

Music pervaded his entire life. During his early years in Fosston, Rayome produced "Moments of Melody," a weekly gospel music broadcast via KROX in Crookston. Later he brought teens and seniors together to create a multigenerational choir that rehearsed at the Embassy and performed frequently throughout the years. He also sang at countless weddings, funerals, and other events in Fosston and the surrounding area.

After retiring from Koehler Floral, Rayome spent his senior years at his parents' home near Maple Lake and remained characteristically active at Rodnes Lutheran Church, serving as a music coordinator, performer, congregational vice-president, and Sunday School superintendent and teacher.

Rayome received several major awards during his career. He was named Fosston's "Citizen of the Year" in 1983. Then, in a Minneapolis ceremony in 2004 entitled "Far From Ordinary," he was the recipient of the prestigious McKnight Foundation award for human service. Later, he was recognized as "Polk County Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year," and honored at the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul.

Rayome passed away at McIntosh Senior Living Center on September 1, 2015.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Beatrice Koehler, and is survived by his brother Boyd (Imogene) of Minneapolis.

Sister Germana Marthaler

1927-2015

February 5, 1927 - September 2, 2015

Resided in Crookston, Minnesota.

Obituary--

Sister Germana (Teresa) Marthaler, 88, died Monday, August 31, 2015, at Mount Saint Benedict Monastery, Crookston, Minnesota.

Teresa was the sixth of eleven children of German-American parents, Albert and Nettie Marthaler on February 5, 1927 in Todd County, Minnesota. She was raised on a farm. She knew how to help with milking the dairy herd, running the milk separator, shocking grain, and driving the tractor.

She graduated from Cathedral High School in Saint Cloud, and in 1949 she entered Mount Saint Benedict Monastery as a postulant. She was invested in the Benedictine habit in 1950 when she received the name of Sister Germana. She made final monastic profession on July 11, 1955.

Sister Germana taught in elementary parochial schools in Barnesville, Mahnomen, Bemidji, Moorhead, East Grand Forks and Thief River Falls. She also was skilled as a secretary and bookkeeper, and she worked in this field in Crookston, Detroit Lakes, East Grand Forks and Grand Forks, North Dakota, where she worked for 15 years at United Hospital (now Altru). Sister Germana was gifted in many ways.

She was mechanical and could fix lots of small things: rewire lamps, clean corrosion off battery operated things, check tires, fix door knobs and figure out how to run the newer battery operated clocks, radios, TVs. If one ever wanted a tool -- hammer, pliers. screwdriver, etc. -- she had it. Her family attests to the fact that she was a good baker and made cakes and boiled frosting. All this was before the box cakes and ready-made frosting. She was good at making bread.

Sister Germana was a great lover of dogs, and she grieved at the death of her dog, Dancer.

Her father died in 1955 and after that, during her summer vacations, she would drive her mother to see all the people and places she wanted to visit. After her mother died in 1985, she and Sister Andre, her Benedictine sister, spent their vacations at her sister's guest cabin on the Mississippi River near Saint Cloud. She enjoyed boating and just sitting on the shaded dock reading and napping. She was clever at doing crossword puzzles and Suduko. She loved to read and could devour a book in a day or two.

Sister Germana was an avid and knowledgeable sports fan. The Sacred Heart Eagles teams were the best. While at Sacred Heart in East Grand Forks, she attended any sporting event possible. Also at the top of her list of favorites was UND hockey. She attended quite a few games with her brother-in-law, Jack. Watching the the Minnesota Twins and Vikings games was an absolute must for her.

Sister Germana lived for many years in Sacred Heart Convent, East Grand Forks, and she became attached to the people of Sacred Heart Parish. She considered it to be her home parish.

Without seeming overly pious, she was very prayerful and reverent.

Sister Germana is survived by three sisters, Sister Mary Peter, OSC, Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, Imelda also known as Jackie (Jack) McCann of Sartell, Minnesota, and Joan (Charles) Pfannenstein of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, and one brother, Rev Andrew Marthaler of Sauk Center, Minnesota, many nieces and nephews and the members of her monastic community of Mount Saint Benedict Monastery, Crookston, Minnesota.

She is preceded in death by her parents Albert and Nettie Marthaler, brothers Paul, Anthony Lawrence and Albert and sisters Annella Hougnon and Sister Andre Marthaler, OSB.
