Joyce Olson 1918-2015
August 15, 1918 - February 24, 2015
Resided in Crookston, Minnesota
Obituary
Joyce Olson, age 96, of Crookston, Minnesota, died peacefully Tuesday
evening, February 24, 2015, at the RiverView Memory Care Center in
Crookston, Minnesota, with her family at her side.
Joyce was born at Duluth, Minnesota, on August 15, 1918, the daughter
of Victor E. and Agnes Cecelia (Johnson) Olson. She was baptized and
confirmed at Asbury United Methodist Church and attended Duluth public
schools, graduating from Denfeld High School in 1937. After attending
Duluth Business College, Joyce began working at a bank in the city. There
she met, was courted by, and later married a young man by the name of Odell
H. Olson on June 22, 1941.
Over the following years the loving couple would be blessed by the births
of their four children: Richard, Gary, Gail, and Joydell. In 1943 the
growing family moved to Bismarck, ND where Odell was a sales representative
for Fargo Paint and Glass. In 1949 they moved to Crookston after purchasing
Crookston Paint and Glass. Joyce and Odell worked side by side, with Joyce
serving as business and office manager. In 1972 they sold the business to
Roger, Jim, and Jerry Stainbrook, and Joyce became the secretary for the
Wesley United Methodist Church.
She and Odell were devoted members of the church, where
Joyce was a past president of the Women's Society,
later known as the United Methodist Women. She was also a longtime member
of the Order of Eastern Star, and served as Guardian for Job's Daughters.
Sadly, Odell passed away on November 27, 1984. Odell would later be joined
in heaven by their sons, Richard Odell Olson and Gary Grant Olson. Joyce
continued working in the church office until retiring in 1994.
She enjoyed going for walks, and though she could drive, Joyce much
preferred walking to wherever she needed to go. She enjoyed peaceful
moments spent doing embroidery, and playing cards with Odell and their
many friends. Joyce was a wonderful cook, and was even better when it
came to baking. Her ginger cream cookies, were hands-down, the best that
anyone had ever tasted. She enjoyed 'visiting' and took great joy in
meeting and making new friends of all ages.
On October 14, 2002 Joyce moved from her home to the RiverView Nursing
Home, and in 2004 entered the memory care part of the RiverView Care Center.
She absolutely loved each and every one of her caregivers, and they became
extensions of her own family. Their love for her was just as evident.
Joyce's family was very grateful for the many kindnesses shown to her,
and for making her feel so loved and safe. She will be very sadly missed.
Joyce takes leave of her two daughters, Gail Joyce Schultz of Crookston,
and Joydell Alexander and her husband, Jim, of Lake Vermilion, near Cook,
Minnesota; chosen son, Ted Woolever and his wife, September, and their
daughter, Jennem, of Grand Forks, North Dakota; two daughters-in-law,
Lynne Olson of Sanford, Minchigan, and Debra Olson of Minneapolis,
Minnesota; two granddaughters and their families: Abbie and Gene Totten
of San Francisco, CA and their children, Amelia Dempsey Totten and Henry
Grant Totten, and Amanda and Scott Aspenson of Edina, MN and their daughter,
Elin Kay Aspenson; and several nieces, nephews, extended family, and her
RiverView family.
In addition to Odell, her beloved husband of 43 years, and sons, Richard
and Gary, Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Agnes;
son-in-law, Don Schultz; brother, Aubrey Victor Olson and his wife,
Virginia; and niece, Ginnylee Appel. May God richly bless Joyce's memory.
The funeral service for Joyce Olson will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m.,
Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in
Crookston with The Rev. Michelle Miller, officiating. Visitation will be
for one hour prior to the service and interment will be in the Oakdale
Cemetery in Crookston in the spring. Memorials may be given in Joyce's
name to the RiverView Memory Care Center, 323 South Minnesota Street,
Crookston, MN 56716 or the Wesley United Methodist Church, 701 Eickhof
Blvd, Crookston.

Everett Harlan Anderson 1934-2015
November 22, 1934 - February 19, 2015
Resided in Crookston, Minnesota
Obituary
Everett Harlan Anderson, 80, of Crookston, Minnesota, died peacefully
Thursday evening, February 19, 2015, at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston,
comforted by the presence of his four children and their families.
Everett was born in Crookston on November 22, 1934, the son of Edward
and Clara (Waterstrat) Anderson. He grew up on the family farm in Fairfax
township, attended Crookston schools, and graduated from the Northwest
School of Agriculture. He farmed with his father for several years before
entering the US Army on November 19, 1957. Everett served with the 97th
Artillery Batallion in Germany until his honorable discharge on October
30, 1959.
He returned to Crookston to resume farming, and on January 14, 1961
was united in marriage to ReJeanne B. "Scotty" Prudhomme. Their union
would be blessed by the births of four children: Kathy, Curt, Karen, and
Calvin. Everett took over the farming operation following his father's
death in 1972 and he and Scotty continued to farm until retirement in 1989.
Whether it was work or everyday life, Everett and Scotty were inseparable.
Sunday mornings after Mass were reserved for going out to a local restaurant
with 'church friends.' Sunday afternoon meant visiting with friends and
family, and usually involved lots of great food, conversation, and playing
cards. Loading the kids in the car and going for a drive to check out the
crops was another of the Anderson family traditions.
Saturday evenings found Everett and Scotty at the Eagles for supper and
dancing, and many summer days were devoted to the large family garden
shared with relatives. Very sadly, Scotty passed away on December 22,
2010, just a few weeks before they would have celebrated their fiftieth
wedding anniversary. Everett and his family felt her loss very deeply.
Despite his failing health, Everett was able to remain in his home,
largely because of the tender loving care given by his son, Curt, who
lived with him.
He was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish,
and also held memberships in Eagles Aerie 873, and American Legion Post
20. Everett was a past-president of the Board of Directors of Cenex, and
was very proud of his membership in the Presidents Club of the University
of Minnesota-Crookston. He was a down to earth kind of man, who knew the
worth of a dollar, and passed on many of life's values to his kids, along
with his wonderful sense of humor. He will be very lovingly remembered as
a great husband, dad, grandpa, and friend.
Everett is survived by his four children and their families: Kathy and
Jim Borkowski and Curt Anderson, of Crookston, MN, Karen and Guy Reierson
of Eldred, Minnesota, and Calvin and Dawn Anderson of Crookston; seven
grandchildren: Adam Borkowski, Brent, Brandon, and Kaylee Reierson, Sawyer
Anderson, and Parker and Alex Boone; three sisters-in-law, Rosemary Tate
of Crookston, Sue Prudhomme, and Thelma Prudhomme; and many nieces, nephews,
and other relatives.
In addition to his beloved wife, Scotty, Everett was preceded in
death by his parents, Edward and Clara; and daughter-in-law, Sandy
Anderson. May God richly bless the memory of Everett Harlan Anderson.
Mass of Christian Burial for Everett will be celebrated at the Cathedral
of the Immaculate Conception at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 25, 2015,
with The Rev. Vincent Miller, presiding. Visitation will be at the
Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5-7:00 p.m., with a
7:00 p.m. prayer service and time of sharing, and visitation also
at the church for one hour prior to the funeral. Military Honors
will be provided by the Crookston Veterans Council. Interment will
follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Crookston.

jobs, before moving to Warroad, Minnesota, and working for Marvin Windows

College and earned a certificate as an emergency medical technician in 1991.
Grant became his father, Walter's, primary caregiver after the passing of
his mother, Carol, in 1992. Grant would take his dad on winter trips to

After returning to Fertile in the mid 2000's, Grant became an employee
of the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen where he managed the Dollar Store
at the Manitok Mall and later became the supervisor of the gift shop in the

brother, Eric, and Grant shared a love of cooking and entertaining family

Edward Richard Kurpius
October 13, 1924 - March 21, 2015
Resided in Crookston, Minnesota
A farmer went home--
Edward Richard Kurpius, age 90, died peacefully at his home in Crookston, MN, on March 21, 2015.
Ed was born at the family farm outside of Staples, MN, on October 13, 1924. He was the youngest of seven children born to Steve and Clara (Knosalla) Kurpius, first descendants of Polish immigrants to America in the late 1800's.
Edward was baptized into the Catholic faith at the Sacred Heart Church in Staples and spent his pre-school years in Todd County.
His family moved to a farm near Caledonia, ND, in 1929. He attended grades 1-7 there and was confirmed at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hillsboro, ND.
In the spring of 1937 a move was made to the Lockhart area. There Edward graduated from the eighth grade. In 1938 the family moved onto a nearby farmstead. Due to this relocation Ed transferred to Beltrami to attend high school while assisting his father on the farm.
On October 2, 1946, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Bremer at the St. Joseph's parsonage in Ada. The couple moved onto the family farm in Pleasant View township that had been homesteaded by his new wife's grandparents. There they began a partnership of raising small grains and Holstein dairy cattle. It was here where they welcomed their two daughters, Connie and Mary Jane. After the birth of his second baby girl, Ed often said that he was going to order a rural mailbox sign that read "Edward Kurpius and Daughters!"
During the years on the farm the couple served as leaders for the Pleasant View 4-H Club and were active in activities at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ada. They were also non-stop supporters of their daughters' various school, church, and community activities.
In 1969 Ed retired from farming and turned his attention to business. He took over the ownership of the Texaco station in Ada where he served the community for fifteen years. In 1984 the doors of Kurpius Oil closed for the final time, and some well-deserved years of retirement and travel ensued. The couple joined a motor home group and traveled to all 48 of the continental United States, Mexico, and several provinces in Canada.
After fifty-six years of marriage Edward lost his wife, Marjorie, to cancer in December of 2002. It was during those twelve years of fighting the loathsome disease that his family was witness to his steadfast faith and devotion. They learned just how strong one can be when life hands you trials.
In the fall of 2003 Edward left Ada and moved to the Summerfield Apartments in Crookston to be closer to his family. It was here that we were reminded that God doesn't close doors without opening windows! At the apartments Ed met Delores Smith, and as they say, "The rest is history!" The couple were married at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston on June 14, 2004, and later honeymooned on the island of Maui. Edward always said that prior to his second marriage he had asked God for five more years - the Almighty granted him ten!
Although Ed officially retired from active farming in 1969, he was a true" blackland farmer" to the end. Prior to his death he was dreaming about ordering fertilizer for spring planting! He loved the feel of a handful of fresh black dirt between his fingers, insisted on planting perfectly straight rows - no angling off to the left or right, and rejoiced silently when his crops began to germinate and spring up through the rich Red River Valley soil. He thought there was nothing more beautiful than a field of blooming blue flax or the waves of purple and lavender alfalfa blossoms blowing in the summer breeze.
He enjoyed standing in the farmyard and calling for his herd of black and white Holstein cows to come slowly promenading in single file formation to the barn for milking time. The strong hands that did all the mechanical work on various pieces of farm equipment would also gently hold a tiny kitten or help a wobbly newborn calf adjust to its legs for the first time.
In 1978 when Paul Harvey wrote, "So God Made a Farmer," he must have known Edward. The opening passage states, "And on the eighth day God looked down on his planned paradise and said,' I need a caretaker.' So God made a farmer."
Edward possessed the quiet strength of a family patriarch and epitomized the image of a true partner in marriage. He was a strong and supportive father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a truly selfless family man. We never stopped learning from him.
Edward is survived by his wife, Delores, and his two daughters, Connie (Lee) Kurpius-Hannesson and Mary Jane Kurpius-Brock, all of Crookston. He also leaves his wife's children, Connie Smith, Tracy Smith, Janie Ricord, and Sherri (John ) Helgaas, all of Crookston, Monty (Sharon) Smith of Miles City, Montana, Kelly (Eileen ) Smith of Langford, SD, and Scott Smith (Patrick Prochaska) of Minneapolis, his six grandchildren, Wendy (Scott) Berge of Grand Forks, ND, Darby (Beka) Miller of Waubun , MN, Jeanna Miller of Minneapolis, MN, Andrew (Tami) Miller of Moorhead, Larissa Kurpius-Brock of Crookston and Marinda Kurpius-Brock of Moorhead. Edward was blessed with the births of his eight great-grandchildren, Riley, Jacob, and Cole Miller, Alexia, Thomas, and Brenna Berge, Kendra Strommen, and Brianna Miller. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews also survive.
With his passing he joins his first wife, Marjorie, a son-in-law, Bill Kurpius-Brock, his parents, Steve and Clara, his three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe (Genevieve), Ted (Liz), Stanley (Verna), his three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mamie (Walter) Johnson, Lorraine (Amiel) Randel, Evangeline (Patrick) Hoemberg, and a step-daughter, Cindy LaFleur.
Edward will be remembered for his gentleness and compassion, his strong work ethic and integrity, and a lifetime firmly rooted in faith. We will miss him dearly. "Well-done, good and faithful servant." Matthew 25:21. May he rejoice forever in the Spirit of the Lord!
The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday at 10:30AM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston with internment to follow at the Ada Cemetery.

a gathering place for all the kids in the neighborhood, and a chance for
them to enjoy some of Eleanor's baked treats. Sadly,

to Eleanor and she devoted many hours to the RiverView Hospital Auxiliary
and helping out at Wesley United Methodist Church where she was a very

that would light up the room. She would never ask for help, but was always
there to help others. May God bless Eleanor's memory.

Obituary
Michael Dean Marschall, 57, of Fisher, Minnesota, died peacefully late
Wednesday evening, March 4, 2015, at the Essentia Hospital in Fargo, North
Dakota, with family at his side.
Michael was born at Minot, North Dakota on July 7, 1957, one of four sons of the union of Elloide and JoAnn (Schmidt) Marschall. He grew up on the family's farm near Max, North Dakota, was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church, rural Sawyer, North Dakota, and graduated from Max High School in 1975. Michael enrolled at the Wahpeton (North Dakota) State School Science, where he earned an associated degree in architectural drafting. He then began working as a draftsman for Ask, Inc in Minot.
After a few years he became employed with another Minot firm, SSR Engineers. Michael was united in marriage to Andrea Jo Jung on May 29, 1982 at Hope Lutheran Church. Their marriage would be blessed by the births of daughters, Sarah and Emily. The family made their home in Minot until 1991 when they moved to Fisher, Minnesota. Michael accepted a transfer to the Grand Forks office of SSR, which was known as Poykko Engineers. His specialty was electrical design and he worked on several large projects including the Ralph Engelstad Arena and Alerus Center. His company underwent another name change later and today is known as ONE. Michael had been with the company through all its growth and changes for the past twenty-two years to the present time. He suffered a serious stroke on December 17th and had been courageously fighting its effects for the past 77 days. Throughout this time he never lost his sense of humor, and continued to entertain family and friends alike with his famous home-grown one-liners.
Michael and Andrea were devoted members of Fisher Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. He was also quite active in the Fisher community and was a city councilman for several years. His greatest passion after his children was University of North Dakota hockey, and he still referred to them as the 'Sioux.' Michael was extremely proud to have worked on the Ralph and he and daughter, Emily, were season ticket holders who never missed a game until his illness. For Emily's college graduation from UNorth Dakota Michael had a Sioux themed cake made and was so excited about it he forgot to add "Congratulations."
Michael and oldest daughter, Sarah loved to go shopping, stop in at garage sales, and never missed an art fest. They would disappear all day and come home with absolutely nothing...but they had a great time doing it. He would take his daughters to concerts, whether he wanted to or not, and had a great time with Sarah at a Timberwolf/Utah Jazz game in the cities awhile back. In short, there wasn't anything Michael wouldn't do for his girls. Michael and Andrea became grandparents recently, with Sarah giving birth to Evangeline Michelle last November 14th, and Emily giving birth to Harley Lynn on February 17th. He got to hold both of his granddaughters and he was indeed very proud. Michael will be very lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his family and many friends.
Grateful to have shared in his life is Andrea, his beloved wife of 32 years; and their two daughters and families: Sarah Marschall Friesner, her husband, Eric, and their daughter, Evangeline Michelle, of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, and Emily Marschall Moulds, her husband, Casey, and their daughter Harley Lynn, of Fisher, Minnesota. July 15, 1928 - March 1, 2015
Resided in Crookston, Minnesota
Obituary--
Gordon Richard "Bud" Salem, 86, a longtime Crookston, Minnesota businessman, died Sunday morning, March 1, 2015, at RiverView Health in Crookston, with members of his loving family at his side.
Bud was born in Crookston on July 15, 1928, the son of Lebanese immigrants, Barber and Emma (Joseph) Salem. He was baptized and confirmed at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and attended Cathedral Schools. Bud played football and hockey for Cathedral High School and graduated in 1946. He was employed by the Minnesota Highway Department in Crookston before entering the US Army on November 10, 1950. Bud served with the 5th Army, 17th Engineering Battalion, and was stationed in Germany as part of the Army of Occupation. He received his honorable discharge with the rank of TSGT on October 29, 1952. He then returned to Crookston and was employed by his brothers, Sam and Muss, in their bar known as "The Mint." He later sold Fords for his cousin, George Salem, at his car dealership in Red Lake Falls, Mi, and then spent several years working at Salem's Corner in Crookston, owned by his brother, Sam. After George Salem purchased Saul Motors in Crookston, and renamed it Salem Motors, he began selling Fords for him once again. On February 23, 1963 Bud was united in marriage to Theresa Victoria Klein at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Karlsruhe, North Dakota. They settled into their home in Crookston and later welcomed daughters, Brenda and LeaAnn, into their lives. Following George Salem's death, Bud and partner, Harold Martin purchased the business in 1965, continuing to operate it as Salem Motors. In 1981, Harold's son, Dennis, became the new partner. After 48 years operating the dealership, Salem Motors was sold to Christian Brothers in February of 2013
Bud and Terry were devoted members of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where he served on several committees and helped organize many fundraisers. They enjoyed spending time at their Maple Lake home, near Mentor, Mi, and looked forward to entertaining family and friends. Throughout his life Bud was an avid sports fan, but his passion always remained with hockey. In younger days he coached the Senior Pirates, and together with several of his buddies, traveled to the State Hockey Tournament in the Twin Cities year after year. He was a longtime member of the Crookston Park Board and Hockey Boosters, and was honored as a recipient of the Hockey Boosters Award. Bud was also a lifetime member of the Eagles, American Legion Post 20, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1902, and the Knights of Columbus. He liked to cut grass, whether at home or at the lake, and loved to spend time in the three gardens that he maintained all summer long. He was a great cook, and preparing Lebanese food was one of his specialties. Bud will long be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and his wink and warm smile. He loved Terry, the girls, and his grandson with all his heart, and during the final days of his illness would light up whenever they came into the room. Though his days were numbered, each and every one of his family has memories that will last forever.
Bud is survived by his beloved wife, Terry, and the couple had just celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on February 23rd. Also surviving are their two daughters, Brenda Salem of Minneapolis, Minnesota and LeaAnn Salem of Crookston, Minnesota; grandson, Gavin Richard Salem-Boman of Crookston; sister-in-law, Shirley Salem of Crookston; Terry's six siblings: John (Regina) Klein of Minot, North Dakota, Jean (Adam) Wald of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Emmanuel (Angela) Klein of Minot, Ted Klein of Lisbon, North Dakota, Allan (Elaine) Klein of Surrey, North Dakota, and Cornelius (Celia) Klein of Spearfish, South Dakota; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Barber and Emma; three brothers: Marcel "Muss" (Myrtle) Salem, and Louis and Sam Salem; and five sisters: Mary (Art) Anderson, Sally (Olaf) Homdrom, Agnes (Estol "Pat") Taylor, Betty (Roy) Bachellor, and Barbara (Richard) Butler. May God bless Bud's memory.

Resided in Climax, Minnesota
Obituary
Rodney Alexander Spokely, 71, of Climax, Minnesota, died Wednesday morning, March 4, 2015, at Sanford Health in Fargo, North Dakota with his family by his side. He had been battling ill health for several months.
Rodney was born in Crookston, Minnesota on August 20, 1943, one of four children of the union of Francis and Thelma (Bratteli) Spokely. He grew up on the family's farm near Nielsville, and was baptized and confirmed at the St. Petri Lutheran Church. Rodney attended grade school in Nielsville and graduated from Climax High School in 1961. He then attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis majoring in Agriculture.
During his junior year he applied to the Peace Corps, and after acceptance was assigned to an agricultural area near Bogata, Columbia, in South America. Rodney spent two years working with the people there to improve farming practices through farm planning, erosion and pest control, soil surveys, animal husbandry and marketing cooperatives. The trip home became a major life event, as he and a good friend bought motorcycles in Panama and rode their way back to Climax. Rodney then began farming with his father and brothers.
On August 1, 1970, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Jo Larson at the Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church in Shelly. The couple settled on their farm in Hubbard township and were blessed by the births of three daughters: Michon, Jennifer, and Mandi. Rodney had been farming potatoes and grains to the present time with his brothers, Francis Jr. and Lonnie.
Horses were a big part of his life, and in 1977 he and a friend introduced a breed known as Paso Fino to the state of Minnesota. Rodney owned and bred these horses for many years, and always looked forward to getting his grandkids out to the farm to go riding. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends as well as car races. Rodney was a lifelong member of St. Petri Lutheran Church, and a member of the Red River Valley Potato Growers' Association, and Paso Fino Breeders' Association. Rodney will be deeply missed by all that were blessed to know him.
Rodney leaves his beloved wife of forty-four years, Becky, and their three daughters and families: Michon and Paul Metzger, and Jennifer and Lance Reitmeier, of Fisher, Minnesota, and Mandi and Ben Hoff of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; together with five grandchildren: Hayden, Ella, and Malene Reitmeier and Paisley and Evie Hoff. Rodney is also survived by his two brothers, Francis and Linda Spokely Jr. of East Grand Forks, Minnesota and Lonnie and June Spokely of Hillsboro, North Dakota; a brother-in-law, Joseph Cudd of San Antonio, TX; Becky's siblings, Betty and Ray Malmlov and Brian and Marlys Larson, of Moorhead, Minnesota; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Thelma; sister, Sandra Cudd, who died on September 30, 2013; and parents-in-law, Lester and Idella Larson. Blessed be Rodney's memory.
The funeral service for Rodney A. Spokely will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at the Shelly Marsh River Lutheran Church in Shelly, Minnesota, with The Rev. Valerian Ahles, officiating. Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston on Monday from 5-7:00 p.m., with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, and also at the church for one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in the Sundet Cemetery, rural Nielsville. Memorials may be given in Rodney's name to the Juvenile Diabetes Association or St. Petri Lutheran Church.
