Doris was born at Souris, North Dakota, on December 8, 1909, one of four children of the union of Henry and Jennie (Norgren) Peterson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, grew up at Vergas, Minnesota, and was a 1927 graduate of nearby Frazee High School. On June 8, 1932, she was united in marriage to William C. "Bill" Albright at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Vergas. Doris was a lovely, gracious woman who always had a kind word for everyone; she was non-judgmental, and looked for, and found, the best in one and all. She lived her faith, and served as a loving example of a faith filled life to all who knew her. Doris was a constant joy to her family, as they were to her.

Sister Flora Klier

1924-2015

May 2, 1924 - February 6, 2015

Resided in Crookston, Minnesota

Obituary--

Sister Flora (Alvina) Klier died peacefully at Villa Saint Vincent on Friday, February 6, 2015.

She was born in Park Rapids, Minnesota, on May 2, 1924 the third of four children born to Mary (Thiesen) and Anthony Klier. Sister Flora began thinking about a religious profession when she was about fourteen because of the Benedictines who taught summer catechism in her parish of Two Inlets. She entered community on September 4, 1942 and made her final profession in August of 1947.

Sister Flora remarked, in autobiographical information a few years ago, that living at the Mount has always been very special to her. She stated that all the beauty surrounding the monastery is just a little bit of heaven for her.

Because of a very special skill at cooking, Sister Flora's first ministry was charge of the dietary departments of hospitals in Detroit Lakes and Browerville, Minnesota for a number of years. She was then assigned to the dietary department of Mount Saint Benedict in Crookston (we at the monastery fondly remember her homemade angel food cake and other delights!). While working in the dietary department, she became interested in the large twelve-acre garden here at the Monastery under the direction of Sister Benigna. She was given charge of this garden in 1974, where she helped raise food for more than one hundred sisters at the Mount, for mission schools where more than fifty sisters worked, and also for Care and Share. Her volunteer helpers in the garden also were able to get the vegetables they needed for their own use.

In the 1990's, she and her volunteers yearly raised 3, 735 pounds of potatoes, 21, 522 pounds of carrots, 11, 142 pounds of squash, 2, 544 pounds of peas, 1, 775 pounds of beans, 141 bushels of tomatoes, 850 pints of raspberries, 249 pints of strawberries, 2, 437 pounds of spinach, 777 pounds of lettuce, 12 bushels of large apples, 18 bushels of crab apples, and much more! Sister Flora was a master at good care of the soil, using only minimal fertilizer and pesticides.

In order to enrich the soil, she planted buckwheat and later plowed the full-grown crop under. She used lady bugs purchased from a firm in California to combat aphids and also enlisted the help of cats to keep the mice and birds from stealing produce as well as a dog to scare away the deer. Not only was Sister Flora extremely talented with the garden, she also had artistic talent in cake making and decorating for weddings as well as wood carving. She belonged to the Wood Carvers' Club of this area and created intricate work. She also restructured broken statues and painted them for a number of a number of churches in the area.

Sister Flora was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Mathilda and Delores, and her brother, Marcellus. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Ida Klier a niece, Rose Pitcher, friends, and the members of her monastic community.

Gifts in memory of Sister Flora are preferred to Mount Saint Benedict Foundation.

Sister Flora Klier, OSB, age 90, of Mount St. Benedict in Crookston, MN, died late Friday evening at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston. Sister's Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at the Sacred Heart Chapel of Mount St. Benedict, 620 Summit Avenue, Crookston, MN, with Msgr. Roger Grundhaus, presiding. Visitation will be at the Sacred Heart Chapel on Tuesday from 5-7:00 p.m., with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, and also for one hour prior to the Mass. Interment will be in the Mount St. Benedict Cemetery in the spring.

Resided in Crookston, Minnesota

Obituary

Cindy Jo LaFleur, 62, of Crookston, Minnesota, died Sunday evening, February 1, 2015, at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota, after a brief illness.

Cindy was born at Crookston, Minnesota, on August 25, 1952, the daughter of Walter and Delores (Gullekson) Smith. She grew up in Crookston and was a graduate of Central High School.

In 1970, Cindy married LeRoy Clemenson, and they were blessed with the births of two children, Jason Lee and Jodi Lynn. During these years she was employed at the J. R. Simplot Company, and later at Thom's Linen, before going to work for the American Crystal Sugar Company.

On December 5, 1979 Cindy was united in marriage to Dennis LaFleur at their home in Crookston. Both were employed at American Crystal which is where they first met. Cindy and Dennis worked together throughout their marriage, and during those early years they also managed the Barrette Arms Apartments. Later they were employed at Yates Texaco. Cindy then became a realtor with Century 21 in Crookston, while also working at Thomforde's Garden Center.

She was employed seasonally with the US Department of Agriculture taking samples of the potato crops in the area, and cleaned houses for several Crookston families. Cindy enjoyed going to auctions and yard sales, using her expert's eye in searching for antiques and other pieces of value. She spent several years gathering up things she acquired, and in 2003 realized the longtime dream of opening a business known as 'Timeless Treasures Antiques.' She and Dennis, together with best friend and business associate, Jody Thomforde Menge, owned and operated the business to the present time.

Cindy was a lifelong gardener and landscaper, and took great pride in maintaining her beautiful park-like yard. She was an avid reader, a huge NASCAR fan, and enjoyed watching crime dramas on tv. Dogs were a big part of Cindy's life and she and Dennis shared their home with Rufus, her constant companion, three turtle aquariums, and a sole surviving bird that has been with them for 29 years. Cindy welcomed birds, squirrels, and rabbits to her yard, and after a long Minnesota winter eagerly anticipated spring and the wonders of nature reborn. Cindy and Dennis took road trips all around the country, visiting five Canadian provinces and all but 15 of the United States. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy and Cindy proudly kept up with all of their activities, and spent as much time with them as she could. Great sadness came into her family's life with the death of son, Jay, on January 24, 2011. Not a day passed that he wasn't in her thoughts and prayers.

Grateful to have been a part of Cindy's life is her beloved husband of 35 years, Dennis; daughter and son-in-law, Jodi Lynn and Will Enlow of Crookston; four grandchildren: Brooke Clemenson (Dustin Schwebach) of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Megan Pierson (Brady Johnson) of Fargo, North Dakota, and Anna and Casey Enlow of Crookston; her mother and step-father, Delores and Ed Kurpius of Crookston; and parents-in-law, Ted and Fern LaFleur of Crookston. Louis O. "Louie" Gelen

1923-2015

February 13, 1923 - January 28, 2015

Resided in Crookston, Minnesota

Obituary

Louis O. "Louie" Gelen, age 91, of Crookston, Minnesota, died late Wednesday evening, January 28, 2015, at the University of Minnesota-Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Louie was born at Aure, Minnesota, near Bemidji, on February 13, 1923, the son of Olaf and Leora Gelen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, grew up on the family farm, and attended country school through the 9th grade. He worked with his father for several years before enlisting in the US Army on April 20, 1943. Louie served, during WWII, with the 517th Parachute Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division, and saw action in Rome-Arno, southern France, Ardennes, the Rhineland, and central Europe. As a paratrooper his most important jump was made behind enemy lines in the battle of Normandy. In recognition of his service to his country, a grateful nation awarded him the American Theater Service Medal, Bronze Arrowhead, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.

Following his honorable discharge with the rank of Sergeant, Louie returned home and attended Bemidji State College. From 1947-1951 he served as Bemidji City Assessor, and on October 31, 1948 was united in marriage to Vera A. Lundmark at the First Lutheran Church in Bemidji. Vera's wedding dress was made from the material used in Louie's parachute. At her urging Louie made application to the Minnesota State Patrol School.

After successful completion of the program he was hired as a State Highway Patrolman in 1952. During these years the couple was blessed with the adoption of their children, Lori and David. The Gelens settled in Crookston and Louie served with distinction during his 30-year career with the State Patrol, retiring with the rank of Sergeant in 1982. He enjoyed the respect and esteem of colleagues throughout law enforcement, and was known not only for his professionalism and fairness, but as someone who would always "have your back."

Louie's faith was very important to him, and he and Vera were devoted members of the Trinity Lutheran Church for over 60 years. He was a twenty-five year member of the Crookston Volunteer Fire Department, and generously gave of his time to the Tri-Valley Medical Assistance Program for the elderly, as well as, volunteering with the IRS doing tax preparation for the elderly and those who qualified as low-income. Louie was a 66-year member of Crookston's American Legion Post #20, and held lifetime membership in VFW Post #1902. In April, 2009, Louie, along with several WWII veterans from the area, participated in the Northern Valley Honor Flight.

This was a two-day trip to Washington, DC, where visits were made to the World War II Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and other sites; and the opportunity to visit with dignitaries who shared with them the common bond of military service. The trip was an emotional and memorable experience for Louie and his companions, honoring their sacrifice and patriotism for a country loved so much by them all. For many years Louie was a welcoming figure in the pro-shop at the Minakwa Country Club, and when not working could often be seen on the golf course getting in a round with his regular foursome. He was fortunate enough in his lifetime to record 2 holes-in-one. In younger years, he also enjoyed bowling in one of the local leagues. Playing cards was second nature to Louie and he regularly enjoyed meeting his buddies for coffee at the Legion and getting in a 'few hands.'

Louie was devoted to Vera, and seeing them together defined the term soul-mates. For many years the couple spent winters in Arizona, enjoying time with their son and daughter-in-law, David and Lucy, and grandson, Jonathan. Very sadly, Vera passed away last October 22nd. Louie deeply mourned her loss and looked forward to the time when they would be reunited. His loving family will forever remember him for his kind and gentle nature, and the smile that was always present.

Family members include his daughter, Lori Gelen of Bemidji, MN; son and daughter-in-law, David and Lucy Gelen, and their son, Jonathan, of Chandler, AZ; sister-in-law, Florence Lundmark, of Bemidji; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to Vera, his beloved wife of 66 years, Louie was preceded in death by his parents, Olaf and Leora; and 3 sisters, Florence Evje, Hazel Jallen, and Olga Gelen, who died as a teen-ager. May God bless the memory of Louie Gelen.

The funeral service for Louis O. Gelen will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston, Minnesota, with The Rev. Greg Isaacson, officiating. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the funeral. Military Honors will be provided by the Crookston Veterans Council and interment will be at Crookston's Oakdale Cemetery in the spring.
