Dorothy Jean (Grosfield) Mjelde

1932-2012

(February 26, 1932 - March 3, 2012)

Dorothy Jean Mjelde, 80, of Hallock, Minnesota, formerly of Beltrami, Minnesota, died in the Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock, Saturday, March 3, 2012.

She was born on February 26, 1932, at home in Shelly, Minnesota, to Arnold and Gladys Grosfield. Dorothy was baptized on May 1, 1932 and, later, confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church, Shelly. She attended grade school at Shelly, and High School in Climax, Minnesota. While in school she worked at Gilmer's Cafe and also with her father on the coal truck, making deliveries to homes and businesses for heat.

On November 18, 1948, Dorothy was united in marriage to Curtis Mjelde at Shelly. They made their home in Beltrami, Minnesota, where they raised their four boys: Steven, Tom, Joe and Jim. Over the years, Dorothy worked for the Beltrami School as a secretary, Fair Meadow Nursing Home as a secretary, a Plumbing and Heating Co as a secretary, and as a sub postal clerk at the Beltrami Post Office for many years. Curtis died in October 25, 2002. Dorothy continued to live in Beltrami until 2007, when she moved to assisted living in Karlstad, Minnesota.

She moved to Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock, as her health declined. Being particular about her gardens and yard, brought Dorothy a lot of satisfaction. She would spend hours outside in the summer months pulling weeds, raking leaves, and cleaning the flower beds. These efforts were blessed with beautiful flowers. "Junk Shopping" with Curtis was enjoyable. (Curtis sat and watch people while Dorothy shopped for stuff they didn't need, affectionately called "Junk Shopping" by Curtis.) Grocery shopping was fun as Dorothy and Curtis stocked up on all kinds of necessities -- their basement reflected the image of a small grocery store -- and Dorothy made tremendous meals for her family from her stockpile. Playing Whist with her sister, Betty Ann and brother-in-law, Wally, was a great past time. Dorothy loved and was devoted to her family.

Marian A. (Osmondson) Ness

1916-2012

(November 28, 1916 - April 9, 2012)

Marian Ness, age 95, died at Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, Minnesota, on April 9, 2012.

She was born at the family log house in Garden Township, Polk County, Minnesota, to Osmon and Mary (Bergum) Osmondson on November 28, 1916. Marian was a 3rd generation Norwegian and passed that proud heritage on to her children and grandchildren. She was the youngest of 9 children. Her siblings were Arthur, Olga, Gerda, Orville, Walter, Caroline, Ludvig and Conrad, who are all deceased.

Marian attended country school at Pleasant View District 97 until 8th grade, after which she attended Oak Grove Lutheran High School in Fargo, North Dakota, for one year. She graduated from Mentor Public School, Mentor, Minnesota, in 1937 where she learned to love literature and writing. In her adult life she enjoyed writing poetry for personal pleasure. For many years she kept a diary, recording the everyday activities of farm, community and family.

Marian married Aaron Ness, son of Arthur and Caroline Ness, on November 8th, 1940 at Dovre Free Lutheran Parsonage, Winger, Minnesota. They bought land in Garden Township where they had a dairy and small grain farm. Three children were born to them: Alan, Mary and Steve. Aaron died of cancer in 1977. Farm life kept Marian very busy. Besides the house and garden responsibilities, Marian helped with milking the cows and the field work. She could drive a grain truck with the best of them.

Marian was active in Maple Bay Free Lutheran Church which was a sister church to Union Lake Free Lutheran where, as a young person, she was confirmed in Norwegian. Marian loved to travel and a few years before Aaron died, they were able to take a few trips in the US. She continued her travel with friends and sisters-in law well into her 70's. Her most treasured trips were the 3 times she traveled to Norway where she visited relatives in Bo, Telemark. At 85 she took her last trip to Norway for a family reunion attended by over 200 people.

True to her belief that "You're never too old to learn," she began oil painting in her late 60's. Her paintings were of farm scenes that brought back fond memories of her life in the country. She enjoyed baking, gardening, bird watching, oil painting, knitting, crocheting and especially spending time with family and friends, playing games, telling stories, and laughing together. Her greatest joy was her 4 grandchildren of whom she was so proud. She never tired of baking sweets for them.

Alfred Lundby Olson

1920-2011

(February 29, 1920 - March 8, 2011)

Alfred Lundby Olson, 91, Beltrami, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at Riverview Hospital, Crookston, Minnesota.

He was born on February 29, 1920, to Alfred Sr. and Dagny (Hanson) Olson in Crookston, Minnesota. Alfred was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church and attended Willowby District #209 rural school, both near his home. He graduated from the Agriculture School in Crookston and returned home to farm with his family.

On May 13, 1943, Alfred was united in marriage to Margie Nordlum in Crookston and cherished 67 years of wonderful companionship. They continued to live on the farm site Alfred's great-grandfather founded until the present. Over the years, Alfred raised cattle, hogs and chickens and grew small grains. In the late 1970's, Alfred reduced his farm-related duties and rented the land. He continued to expand his knowledge and business skills by working as a crop adjustor, a county assessor and with Garfield Insurance as a sales person. During sugar beet harvests, Alfred worked a few seasons at the scale house, keeping him engaged in the farming community.

November 2010, he entered Riverview Nursing Home, and Margie was able to be with Alfred during the last months. Alfred was active in 4-H during the years his children were involved with the club. He also served on many boards with the township, local elevators and other organizations. As a member of Varnes Lutheran Church, rural Fertile, Alfred served as president and secretary/treasurer. Currently, Alfred and Margie are members of Trinity Lutheran Church, Beltrami. For years steady, hard work consumed Alfred's time.

Because he deeply valued Margie, they would take short trips together to refresh their relationship. During the course of the growing season, Alfred and Margie liked driving in the area looking at crops and sharing a picnic. He enjoyed reading, especially about Minnesota and Norwegian History, and learning new words and their meanings. "A real gentleman" is the phrase that reflects Alfred's countenance and mannerism. He was a deeply committed Christian and member of Varnes. As a son, husband and father, Alfred's heart was the welfare and health of those closest to him. He truly loved his family and made each family member a priority in his life.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Margie, Beltrami; three children, Mary Anderson, Eagan, Minnesota, Raymond, Santa Cruz, CA, and Carol (Ron) Brown, Blaine, Minnesota; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Shane (Brenda) Anderson, and their children, Gabriel, Grace, and Jayden, Minneapolis; Rebecca Anderson, Minneapolis; Andreas Olson, Idaho; and Scott Brown, Portland, OR, and Christopher Brown, Minneapolis; two sisters, Doris (John) Sorenson, Ridgefield, WA, and Jean (Arnold) Okerman, Littleton, CO; several nephews, nieces, and cousins.
