Vernice May (Heitman) Geddes

1921-2013

(May 9, 1921 - September 8, 2013)

Vernice Geddes, 92, Ada, Minnesota, died Sunday, September, 8, 2013 at Essentia Health, Ada, Minnesota.

Vernice May Heitman was born to William and Clara (Letness) Heitman in Crookston, Minnesota, on May 9, 1921. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the now no longer existing Pleasant View Church. On July 22, 1941, on her parents' wedding anniversary, Vernice and Ordean (Bud) Geddes were married. They then became members of First Lutheran Church of Ada, which later became Grace Lutheran. Bud and Vernice farmed for several years. Bud started up a machinery selling business, Geddes Equipment, and then their son, Rodger, and son-in-law Harlan Hoff took over the farm operations.

After selling that last venture, Bud and Vernice spent twelve winters in Florida, and did some traveling. They visited Hawaii a couple times, went with a church group to Israel, visited a few other countries, and saw much of our own country. A favorite trip was to England in 1973 to meet a granddaughter who was born there three months earlier. Bud had his first stroke in 1995, and, except to visit children and grandchildren, traveling was then curtailed. Bud passed away February 18, 2008.

Throughout her life, Vernice lived her life to the fullest. She loved her Lord and read the bible daily. She enjoyed spending time with her cat, Moses, and friends, and family. She always had a "delicious cup of coffee" ready for whoever might want to join her and loved to play Scrabble and card games. She had a sharp wit and worked hard to keep up with modern technology. She kept her out-of-town family and friends close with e-mail, Facebook, and internet word games.

Adeline Louise (Michaels) Gudvangen

1932-2012

(February 3, 1932 - March 17, 2012)

Adeline Louise (Michaels) Gudvangen, 80, died Saturday, March 17, 2012, at her home in Fertile, Minnesota, after a battle with cancer.

Adeline Louise Gudvangen was born February 3, 1932, in Fisher, Minnesota, to Rudolph and Esther (Ingebrigtson) Michaels. The family moved to rural Fertile where Adeline attended and graduated from Fertile High School in 1949.

After High School, Adeline started waitressing at the Sweet Shop Cafe in Crookston. There she dated LeRoy Gilmore Gudvangen. They were later married on December 22, 1953, at the Hitterdahl Lutheran Parsonage in Maple Bay. LeRoy and Adeline initially lived in Crookston before moving to Fertile in 1957. Adeline was employed as a cook at the Top Notch Steak House in Fertile. In 1972, she was employed by Fertile-Beltrami Public School as a cook. She resigned her position as a cook after several years to join the janitorial staff. She retired in 1997.

Adeline (Addie) was very unassuming, with her children as the center point of her life. She encouraged them with expressions like, "I could never do that" when shown finger paintings, penmanship papers and science projects.

The doors to Addie's home were always open to whoever might decide to drop in. Sunday afternoons would find brother and sisters and their children arriving for a potluck meal and a game of softball in the alfalfa field.

One of Addie's greatest joys was when her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren came home for a visit. There were many days during the Christmas Season when her kitchen floor would be covered with suitcases, blow up beds and pillows as families arrived to spend Christmas with her. She would always say, "Just make yourself at home. I don't wait on anyone," and that is what each person did.

Adeline may have been NorthWest Minnesota's greatest Minnesota, Twins fan. It was best not to interrupt the Twins game. Meeting and having a photo taken with a couple Twins players caused endless smiles. Quilting, plastic canvassing, playing various card games and farkel were a major pastime.

She is survived by her children, two sons: Richard (Sheryl) Gudvangen, Brookings, SD, and Todd Gudvangen, Mentor, Minnesota; three daughters: Cynthia (Dennis) Strobush, Winona, Minnesota, Kim (Bruce) Larson, Nielsville, Minnesota, and Tammie Radermacher, Erskine, Minnesota, 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, a sister, Muriel Briggs, Thief River Falls, Minnesota, three brothers, Walter (LuAnn) Michaels, Farmington, Minnesota, Roger Michaels, Fertile, Minnesota, August (Nancy) Michaels, Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, LeRoy, two sisters, Carolyn Christianson, and Agusta Gudvangen, two brothers, Edmund Michaels, and Arthur Michaels, a grandson, Joel Strobush, a great grandson, Caleb Strobush, and a son-in-law Rick Radermacher.

Arleene (Larson) Hovde

1919-2010

(February 21, 1919 - September 22, 2010)

Arleene Hovde, 91, Fertile, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston, Minnesota. Heaven was full of laughter and smiles as it welcomed Arleene Hovde home. Always the jokester, Arleene made people happy even on the gloomiest day. Her family, friends, and caregivers never knew what was in store for them with Arleene's antics, but they always knew there would be good-hearted laughter and great fun involved. Arleene was blind the last two years of her life, but that didn't stop her from throwing on an old hat and crazy pair of eyeglasses claiming they, "helped her see better." Of course the unsuspecting never realized she was, "blind as a bat, but sharp as a tack," and that was just how she liked it. Arleene was 91 years young when she passed away on September 22 at Villa St. Vincent, in Crookston, Minnesota, where she had taken up residency for two years.

Arleene often employed her tablemates, Sister Regina, Agnes, and Leah, to be her partners in crime and was always dreaming up some scheme to make them, the other residents, and staff smile. She died doing what she liked best, joking with two of her favorite nurses: Heidi and Denise. Of course all her other caregivers were very special to her and she could tell each one by their voice. She made it a point to know each name and something about each person. She truly enjoyed her "new home" at the Villa and the wonderful care she received there.

Arleene was born to Lillie and Ole Larson on February 21, 1919. She was raised in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, where she met a handsome man who came right from Norway, Ole Hovde. They were married on July 7, 1937 and moved to Fertile, Minnesota, in 1948 where they made their home until their deaths. Arleene spent 34 years helping others keep their house in tip-top shape by cleaning, organizing, and helping locate their lost items or treasures. Many times she would get a call asking, "Arleene, do you remember where I put my ???" Within seconds the caller was directed to the exact spot to retrieve the elusive item. She "retired" in 1997, at the age of 78, from Polk Country Nursing where she worked for 26 years as a home health aide. Arleene didn't just assist her friends (every person she helped always was more of a friend in need, not a client), she became the person's sounding board, caterer, and spirit lifter with her quick wit and humor. Arleene's flower gardens were a source of pride and joy.

She was forever trying a new flower or plant to add to her landscape. Her only nemesis were pesky gophers that she tried everything from traps to bubble gum to keep at bay. Many grandchildren became spotters for those nasty critters home so the great gopher catcher, their Grandma, could invade the gophers premises and do away with the trouble makers, often by unconventional means. A wonderful seamstress, Arleene aided many with clothes repair. She also was excellent at crocheting, knitting, and in her blind years "read" every book on tape available. Her homemade baked goods were a treat for everyone she knew. It was not uncommon for Arleene to get up at 4:00 a.m. to get dough rising for homemade buns, caramel rolls, or other pastries which she would give away to her family and friends.

It always brought a smile to her face when she tapped at someone's door with a pan of fresh, warm, caramel rolls for their breakfast. She never asked for anything in return, she just enjoyed giving what she could to brighten someone's day. Many stories will flow as her family and friends share memories of Arleene at the service Sunday, September 26 at the Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile, Minnesota, 2-4 p.m, prayer service 3:30 pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 27, at 11 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church in Fertile.

Arleene is survived by her youngest sister, Aldyene (Ted) Gullikson, of Colorado. Also surviving are five incredible children (we all know she would say that): Barb (Cliff) Renna, Minneapolis; Karen (Alden) Webster, Osseo; Cathy (Keith) Bolstad, Fertile; Jonny (Darlene) Hovde, Fertile; and Lana Christensen, Fergus Falls. Fourteen fantastic grandchildren, twenty-five super great grandchildren, and two wonderful great-great grandchildren also survive this dynamic lady.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Please remember Arleene by carrying a happy song in your heart and a smile on your face and the world will be a better place. Arleene Hovde, 91, Fertile, Mn, died on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be on Monday, September 27, 2010, at 11 am in the Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, Minnesota.

Visitation will be on Sunday, September 26, 2010, from 2-4 pm with a prayer service at 3:30 pm in the Erikson-Vik funeral home, Fertile, Minnesota.

Burial will be in the Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Fertile, Minnesota.

Geralyn Marie "Gerri" Jacobson

1958-2010

(January 3, 1958 - September 30, 2010)

Geralyn "Gerri" Marie Jacobson, age 52, of Fertile, Minnesota, peacefully took the Lord's hand on Thursday morning, September 30, 2010, at her soon to be son-in-laws home with her daughter by her side. She had been battling emphysema as well as many other health issues.

Gerri was born on January 3, 1958, in Drayton, North Dakota, to Henry and Valeria (Smith) Jacobson. She grew up in and out of hospitals having numerous surgeries on her leg and hip. She attended St. Rose Lima Elementary School in Argyle, Minnesota, and her teenage years at Mt. St. Benedict in Crookston where she graduated in 1976. Gerri became a mother at an early age of 17. At the age of 23, she married Larry Radke and they had Hope and Eli. The mostly lived in the Crookston area. In 1986, Gerri and her three children moved to Beltami, Minnesota, where she bought a house.

She met and married Roman VonRuden in 1989, they lived in Orofino, Idaho, and had Anthony and Christian, but her heart was back at her home in Beltrami so they returned. She married Richard Brekke in early 2000 and moved to Fertile in the Northwest Apartments due to her health. Gerri was a strong willed woman who put up a good fight. She loved nature, most outside activities and spending time with her children, grandchildren and her friends. She was known for the roles in her life of mother, wife, grandmother, construction worker, cook at the Beltrami Cafe, the "Skating Rink Lady" in Fertile, an awesome wrestling mom, and an all around hard working homemaker.

She was also known to bring some of the local children fishing or ice skating for their first time. Gerri absolutely loved nature. Her favorite spot was the Texas crossing in Beltrami where she would watch the sunset, target practice, fishing or just listening to the sounds of nature. She also loved to dance and reading her Bible. As her illness progressed she was not able to spend as much time with her children and grandchildren but the mention of their names brought a bright twinkle to her eyes, and a far off glance remembering some special times and fun activities she had done with them, or accomplishments they had achieved. Gerri was so proud of each one of her children her heart swelled with pride. Gerri will always be loved and remembered for her lasting impressions. She would want all of us to take comfort in knowing she is with the God she loves and is finally pain free.

Eileen (Trontvedt) Hanson

1926-2014

(March 18, 1926 - February 9, 2014)

Eileen Hanson 87, Ada, Minnesota, died Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Benedictine Care Community, Ada, Minnesota.

Eileen was born on March 18, 1926, at home at rural Minot, North Dakota, the daughter of Alfred and Helen (Brue) Trontvedt. She moved with her family to rural Fertile, Minnesota, in 1934, where she attended school. Eileen was a graduate of Fertile High School. She was united in marriage to Charles Hanson on July 6, 1943, in San Louis Obispo, CA.

During the time Charles served in the United States Army, Eileen lived in Fertile with her parents until he was discharged in 1945.

They moved to Mason City, Iowa for a short time and then returned to the Fertile area to farm. In 1950, they moved to a farm near Gary, Minnesota, and continued to farm until 1986. Eileen worked at the Wimmer Memorial Home in Ada for many years. They moved to Ada in 1986.

Eileen was known for her kindness, gentleness, and quick smile. She always had the coffee on and cookies ready to go. Cooking and baking for her family brought great happiness to her, and she knew everyone's favorites and made sure they were ready when they came to visit. Her family especially cherished the fudge and brownies she made. Charles and his brothers, Lloyd, Arnold, and Glen spent many mornings sitting around her kitchen table drinking coffee and enjoying her goodies and good company. For many years, she was hostess to the Hanson family reunions at the farm. Eileen's life was centered around being a homemaker, and she loved it. She thought raising her family on the farm was the best. She also enjoyed her years working as a nurses aid, and a activities coordinator at the nursing home in Ada. She made many life-long friends during her time there.

Eileen cherished her grandchildren. Her joy at hearing about the arrival of a new grandchild, or great-grandchild was something that couldn't be captured in words. She welcomed each one into the world with much love, and a quilt, so they could always be wrapped in her love. She has made special quilts for future great grandchildren so they can feel her love in years to come. Her favorite family activity, was the annual camping trip where everyone would gather at a lake for a few days of being together. She planned the trips early, to make sure everyone could be there. Having the annual family photo taken and was very important to her. Her grandchildren remember being rewarded with a dollar each after the successful photo session.

Eileen's church family was very important to her. She loved quilting Wednesday's out at St. John's where she and her friends would gather to create quilts for people all over the world. She enjoyed serving coffee hours, and other church events all of her life. For many years, she made special quilts for each child baptized at St. Johns, giving her a connection and place in the hearts of many. The last of the quilts she made for St. John's babies was presented this year. She lived a God centered life. Eileen had a wonderful relationship with her brother and sisters. "Isn't that Ervin really something?" was a phrase heard often by her children. "I don't know what I'd do without Vi's letters! We keep each other going!" was the next statement. Her relationship with her siblings was an inspiration to her children. When her parents were living, she never missed visiting them during the week, or on Sunday afternoon.

Her time at Bridges Care Community made her last years enjoyable. She felt like family there, and loved and appreciated the caregivers immensely. She wrote about how much she enjoyed being there, and felt so well cared for and loved. While there, she sometimes felt that she had to stay up until all her "guests" in her living room had gone home before she could go off to bed. Her morning coffee with Roger, and frequent visits from her family were cherished.

Eileen is survived by her children, Gene (Julie) Park Rapids, Minnesota, Cheryl (Bob) Drevlow, Washburn, WI, Kay (Bob) Pederson, Brainerd, Minnesota, Roger (special friend, Vicki Wambach) Ada, Minnesota, and daughter in law, Tamara Hanson, Blaine, Minnesota, 12 grandchildren: Scott (Jenny) Pederson, Chris Pederson, Ryan Pederson , Michael (Kelly) Drevlow, Benjamin (Christina) Drevlow, Nick (Kara) Hanson, Rosemarie (Joshua) Barta, Emily (Adam)Franklin, Paul Hanson, Emily Hanson, Amber (Zack) Hanson, Jeramie Hanson, and Anthony Hanson, 8 great grandchildren, Austin and Ethan Drevlow, Elijah and Abraham Hanson, Azariah, Evalyn, and William Barta, and Elsie Franklin.
