Amber Marie (Dahlen) Smart

1978-2009

Amber Smart, 31 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, was called unexpectedly to her home in heaven on October 14th, 2009.

Amber Marie Dahlen was born on February 6, 1978 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the daughter of Dale and Connie (Martin) Dahlen. Amber grew up and attended school in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, graduating with the Class of 1996 from East Grand Forks Senior High School. Following her High School Graduation, Amber went on and attended the University of North Dakota, majoring in Special Education. Amber spent most of the last nine years employed by the Grand Forks Public School District. She started her educational career as a para-educator in 2000 where she served two years at Nathan Twining Elementary and Middle School at the Grand Forks Air Force Base. Following several months of substitute teaching for the school district, she returned to Twining for another half-school year and subsequently served in a similar role at Schroeder Middle School in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

In August of 2005 Amber was hired at Winship Elementary School as a Special Education Teacher in the Resident Teacher Program where she served in that role during the 2005-2006 school years.

Following that successful year, she was selected to be Carl Ben Eielson Elementary School's special education teacher where she had worked ever since. On August 18, 2001 Amber was united in marriage to Jeremy Smart at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Amber loved being a teacher for the most struggling students. She also enjoyed spending time at her lake home, being with her family and friends and always putting a smile on everyone's face. Amber was truly valued, appreciated, respected and loved in her role as wife, mother, daughter, sister, teacher, colleague, and friend.

Loving family members include her husband Jeremy Smart of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, her two beautiful daughters: Alexis age 4 and Kinsley age 2 both at home; her parents: Dale and Connie Dahlen of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, sister: Jodie (Sheldon) Bruggeman and their children Shelby and Brynn of Grand Forks, North Dakota; brothers: Mitchell, Craig and Matthew Dahlen of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; mother and father-in-law: Jim and Cheryl Smart of Grand Forks, North Dakota; brothers-in-law: Jamie (Paula) Smart and their children Brianna (Amber's Goddaughter) and Connor and Scot (Seanna) Smart and their son Brody; grandparents: Luella Martin of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Orville and Lenora Dahlen of Dahlen, North Dakota, and Clarence Coss of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Toby the dog of her life.

Preceding Amber in death is her paternal grandfather: John Martin; her maternal grandmother: Theresa Coss; an aunt: Alice Otto and uncles; Michael Martin and William Willoughby; cousins: Christopher Merrill and Krista Carlson.

Myrtle Evelyn (Mellum) Selmanson

1916-2008

February 29, 1916 - June 10, 2008

Myrtle E. Selmanson age 92 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, left this life on Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 at the Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Myrtle Evelyn Mellum was born on February 29, 1916 in Beaver Creek Township in Steele County, North Dakota, the daughter of Edward and Maria (Olson) Mellum. Myrtle grew up in Golden Lake Township and the Sharon-Aneta area until moving to Grand Forks, at 18 years of age. Myrtle worked as a domestic from 1933 to 1940 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, area. On September 22, 1940 Myrtle was united in marriage to Thorvald Selmanson in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. From 1955 to 1984 she worked at King of Spuds in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Myrtle is preceded in death by Thorvald Selmanson, her husband of 51 years; her parents; 3 sisters: Amelia Sampson, Clara Jacobson, Cecelia Murray; 5 brothers: Clarence, Henry, Alvin, Ernest and Gehard Mellum.

Myrtle is survived by her children: Marvin (Karen) Selmanson of Rapid City, SD and Joyce (Eugene) Tedford of Kerrville, TX; grandchildren: Stacy (Rob) Roberts-Schneider of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Marni (Brian) Davidson of Glendale, CA and Aaron Selmanson of Portland, OR; great-grandchildren: Ayla Davidson, Tallis Davidson and Griffin Schnieder; brother: Arnold Mellum of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; sister: Gladys Curtis of McMinnville, OR. So many friends and relatives will miss her. The family would like to thank the staff of the 400 unit of Valley Elder Care Center of Grand Forks, North Dakota, for taking care of our beloved Grandma. Donna J. (Mykleby) Schindler

1927-2008

April 14, 1927 - July 17, 2008

Donna J. Schindler, 81 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, July 17th, 2008 at the Valley Eldercare Center of Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Donna J. Mykleby was born on April 14, 1927 the daughter of Edwin and Amanda (Peterson) Mykleby. Donna was raised by her grandparents, Ingabret and Bertha Mykleby. She attended school in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. On October 22, 1955 Donna was united in marriage to John A. Schindler at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Warren, Minnesota. Donna was a charter member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and was involved in many church activities. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and her pets.

Following the death of her husband John in 1971 she raised her children by herself.

Family members who survive Donna include her sons, Gary (Jeanne) Schindler of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Terry Schindler of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and Tim (Tammy) Schindler of Grafton, North Dakota; daughter: Cindy (LeRoy) Helmoski of Grand Forks, North Dakota; sisters: Deloris "Lolly" Metcalf of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Shirley (Lowell) Hamrick of Warren, Minnesota, Betty Lewis of Northbend, NE, Carol Ann (Edward) Jacobson of Grand Forks, North Dakota; grandchildren: Kelli, Daniel, Kayela, Joshua, MaryRose and Terri Jean and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971 and a sister Darlene Bedard of Warren, Minnesota

Harold Sorenson

1917-2008

July 3, 1917 - August 6, 2008

Harold Sorenson, 91, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and formerly of Climax, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Aug.6, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Harold was born on July 3, 1917, in Oklee, Minnesota, the son of Ole and Ingeborg (Moe) Sorenson. Their family moved to the Fisher, Minnesota, area in 1932. Harold was a WWII veteran, serving in the Army in New Guinea, Southern Philippines, and Luzon. He married Thelma Rysstad of Bygland, Minnesota. They lived and farmed in the Climax/Fisher area.

He is survived by one son, Paul Sorenson, Fisher, Minnesota; four daughters: Peggy (Mark) Harstad, Mankato, Minnesota, Carol (Joel) Petersen, North Mankato, Minnesota, Julie (Dan) Faugstad, Belleview, Minnesota, and Jodi (Dan) Schmidt, Fisher, Minnesota; 20 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Bergit Moe, and Margaret (Eldon) Kratzke; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; six brothers: Knute, Andres, Soren, Ralph, Gunder, and Ingolf; and three sisters: Ausil, Helga, and Margaret.

Funeral Services: Monday Aug. 11th, at River Heights Lutheran Church in East Grand Forks.


Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Fisher, Minnesota

Barbara A. (Carlson) Sikkila

1928-2008

August 8, 1928 - October 19, 2008

Barbara Anne (Carlson) Sikkila, 80, was called home to be with her Father in heaven on Sunday, October 19, 2008 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She left peacefully in her sleep with daughter Sue at her side.

Barb was born on August 8, 1928 the daughter of Frank and Effie (Onnka) Carlson of Virginia, Minnesota.

She grew up and graduated from and worked in Virginia. She worked in many service jobs encountering and finding friendships with many Range Residents. Barb married Harold Hawley on August 29, 1947. Barb owned Barb's Cafe in Hoyt Lakes and Baudette for many years. She worked tirelessly to provide those communities with a place to gather and grow. She married Cliff Sikkila in Baudette on December 15, 1979. They enjoyed many adventures, exploring and loving life together especially upon Barb's retirement and before Cliff's death. Barb remained an active Lutheran in many congregations throughout her life.

Surviving Barb include her loving daughters; Sue (Leyton) Rodahl of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Barb (Mark) Lee of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, Sharon (Ron) Alholm of Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, and Darlene (Glenn) Richter of Bradenton, FL. In her job of being Grandmother she leaves behind 10 wonderful grandchildren: Patricia (Jon), Scott (Kathy), Rhonda (Kelly), Nicole (Tom), Jim, Dan (Angie), Joel, Laurie Anne (Jeff), Jeremy and Jason. Happiness multiplied for Barb as she was blessed with the births of 20 special Great-Grandchildren. Barb is also survived by 2 brothers: Don and Jack Carlson and a sister Elaine Hart whom she's had the privilege of visiting during our "Cold Minnesota, Winters" courtesy of her daughter Darlene in Florida. She leaves behind many more relatives and in-laws that she truly was honored by their presence in her life.

Barb is preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Virginia Eskola and young brother: Jimmy Carlson.

Barb will be sincerely missed by her family, friends at Town Square and her many acquaintances she has made over the years. All were blessed by her presence in their lives and are glad she has earned her eternal reward.

Omar Syrstad

1924-2009

January 20, 1924 - January 30, 2009

Omar Syrstad, 85, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died Friday, January 30, 2009 at the Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota. Omar Syrstad was born January 20, 1924 in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, the son of Martin and Tena (Farder) Syrstad. He grew up in Grand Forks where he attended school. He served his country in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He attended and graduated from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1948 as an electrician.

He married LaVern Swenson at the Augustana Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, North Dakota, on August 3, 1947. He then worked as an electrician in the Grand Forks area until retiring in 1986. Omar and LaVern built their home in 1955 and loved the rural area where they maintained a large beautiful lawn and garden. He started working for Dixon Electric and then worked for many electrical contractors in the area. Omar was a lifetime member of the IBEW Local #1426. Omar was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church since 1947 and will be remembered as a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his wife LaVern of East Grand Forks; a son Mark (Carrie) Syrstad of Simi Valley, CA; three grandchildren: Eric of Emeryville, CA, and Ann & Sara of Simi Valley, CA; siblings, Morris Syrstad of Maplewood, Minnesota, Allen Syrstad of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and sister Delores Martin (BJ) of Chula Vista, CA; sister-in-law Laurene Boushee of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Lenore Syrstad of Sandusky, OH, Nettie Swanson of Seattle, WA and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Ovie, Lester, Raymond Syrstad, infant brother: Earl and one sister: Minerva Wurr. He was a member of the East Grand Forks American Legion #157, and the East Grand Forks VFW #3817.

In Lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Augustana Lutheran Church

Joanne (Lovald, Nord) Stensrud

1932-2009

July 29, 1932 - May 29, 2009

Joanne Stensrud, 76, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died Friday, May 29th, 2009 after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Joanne was born on July 29th, 1932 in Duluth, Minnesota, the daughter of Waldo and Fern Lovald. She grew up in Duluth and spent several glorious summers on her grandparent's farm near Valley City, North Dakota.

Joanne graduated from Denfeld High School in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1950, and married Wayne Nord shortly thereafter. She became the mother of three beautiful girls and then the family moved to Corona, CA. The marriage dissolved and Joanne and the girls moved back to Duluth, Minnesota. This is where she met Orville Stensrud. They were joined in marriage on April 23rd, 1960, and became the parents of a fourth daughter and made their home in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Joanne held different jobs including homemaker, bank teller, Para Professional with the East Grand Forks School District, waitress and banquet server. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, cards, needle crafts, and movies, was an active member of mission belles, and also her church.

Joanne is preceded in death by her mother and father, Fern and Donald Bostrom her husband Orville and two daughters, Deborah (Steve) Hunt, and Jewel (Terry) Kvamme.

Joanne is survived by two daughters: Sheryl Watson and Laurel (Dennis) Dahlin; five grandchildren: Jessica (Joe) Jordan, Stephanie (Greg) Knepper, Sarah (Brad) Downen, Jennifer Hunt and Carl Watson; two great-grandchildren: Joseph and Joshua Jordan.

Howard Erick Schmechel

Howard Schmechel, 84 of Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Howard Erick Schmechel was born on October 5, 1924 in Ramsey County, North Dakota, the son of Wilhelm and Marie (Ludtke) Schmechel. Howard grew up and attended school in Southam where he graduated from Southam High School. On July 25, 1975 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Bertsch in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Howard worked for Solar Gas and Cenex for 30 years, retiring in 1985. Howard was a musician with the Laddie Pecka Band of Lawton, North Dakota, and the Vern Malafa Band of East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Howard is survived by his wife Evelyn of Grand Forks, North Dakota; two sons: Terry (Celeste) Schmechel of Lawrenceville, GA and Roger (Laurie) Schmechel of Billings, MT; four grandchildren: Kyle, Scott, Stephanie and Robert; one sister: Grace Grulke of Seattle, WA.

Howard is preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and sisters.

Willard Emil Sampson

1920-2009

September 13, 1920 - September 26, 2009

Willard Sampson, 89, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, died Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the 4000 Valley Square, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Willard Emil Sampson was born on September 13th, 1920, in International Falls, Minnesota, the son of Erick and Emma (Hoeldt) Sampson. Willard's father came to the United States at the age of 17 from Sweden with the name as Erick Samelsson, son of Samuel and Kristina Samuelsson.

Willard grew up and attended school in Littlefork, Minnesota, graduating with the Class of 1938. On September 6, 1942 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Schneider in Bemidji, Minnesota. Willard joined the United States Navy in 1942 where he served as an Aviation Radioman 2nd Class until 1945. After a brief stay in both Minnesota, and Washington, Willard and Evelyn moved to San Diego, CA where they had resided over 50 years. Willard had worked as a Quality Control Inspector for the United States Government for over 30 years retiring in 1983.

Following his retirement he worked for Teledyne Ryan in San Diego, CA until 1987. In 2003 he and Evelyn moved back to East Grand Forks, Minnesota, to be next to his daughter and son Cheryl & Dale Stauss. His wife Evelyn passed away shortly after the move to Minnesota. He then resided in Parkwood Place in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Willard is survived by three daughters: Sheilah Beaumont of Olympia, WA, Cheryl (Dale) Stauss of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Willie (Mark) Iacuaniello of Fort Bragg, CA; brothers-in-law: Earl Schneider of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Robert Newark, Nevada City, CA and Gene Percy, International Falls, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Michael, John, Brandy, Jodi, Nicole, Eric, Jennifer, Isaac, and Byron; 15 great-grandchildren plus many beloved nieces, nephews and loved ones.

Preceding Willard in death is his parents; his wife Evelyn on April 25, 2003; one son Eric Sampson; two sisters: Madge Percy and Rene Lattu.

Clarence Alex Storbakken

1928-2010

April 30, 1928 - February 7, 2010

Clarence Alex Storbakken, 81, East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Clarence was born the son of William and Francis (Dauksavage) Storbakken on April 30, 1928. He grew up and attended school in Oslo, Minnesota. Clarence married Eileen Olson on January 18, 1947 in Oslo, Minnesota. Clarence worked in construction until he started his own construction business in 1971 and worked until the fall of 2009. He was known for the best black dirt in town. Clarence was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and he never knew a stranger and had a gift to gab.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eileen; children: Rick (friend Deb), East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Suzanne (David) Hammond, Fowler, CA, and Terry (Tammi), East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and Deborah (Terry Moleski) Burke, East Grand Forks, Minnesota; brothers: Florian (Helen) Storbakken and Wally (Toni) Storbakken, both of Grand Forks, North Dakota; sisters: Marion (Larse) Myrhe, WA, Leona (Jack) Sanders, Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Cheryl Storbakken, Minnesota; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son: Lowell; 2 grandsons: Chad and Mathew; brother: Eugene; and sister: Irene.

Richard Sprague

1926-2010

March 5, 1926 - November 17, 2010

Richard Sprague age 84 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, entered into eternal life Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Richard Sprague was born March 5, 1926 in Crookston, Minnesota, the eldest son of Russell and Burnett (Quam) Sprague. He spent his childhood in Crookston and attended Crookston Central High School where he participated in a variety of musical activities and excelled in sports. His love of country and sense of duty lead him to enlist in the Army Air Corp immediately upon his 18th birthday in March of 1944. He proudly served in North Africa and was honorably discharged in July of 1946.

Upon his return from the war, he attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he studied and played basketball. Richard loved to fly and was a co-owner of a Ryan PT-22 airplane with his lifetime friend Dennis Engen.

Richard was a devoted husband and father. He married Bonnie Bjoin in Crookston, Minnesota, on August 21, 1950. He dedicated his life to his family. During the early years, the family lived in Ada, Moorhead, Crookston and finally in East Grand Forks where he worked for the Department of Defense. The family spent vacations camping at Cass Lake. Later, Richard accepted a position in Puerto Rico and moved the family there for five years. He had many fond memories of the time they spent in Puerto Rico. Bonnie and Richard moved back to East Grand Forks in 1972. Richard was an avid ham radio operator who enjoyed talking with people from around the world. In 1986, he retired and he and Bonnie enjoyed his retirement wintering in Arizona where they had many friends.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie, daughters Katherine (Patrick) DeLaPointe of Fargo, North Dakota, Lorrie (Douglas) Collison of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Beth (Jerry) Hunter of Gilbert, AZ, 4 grandchildren, Ryan and Christina Collison, and Alicia and Piper DeLaPointe, sister-in-law Mavis Sprague and nieces and nephews, Tim, Julie, Tony and Susie. He is preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Joel and Russell.

Les Ronald Schraeder

1953-2011

June 23, 1953 - January 17, 2011

Les Schraeder age 57 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, January 17, 2011, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Leslie Ronald Schraeder was born June 23, 1953 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the son of Oscar and Evelyn (Kyle) Schraeder. He grew up in Grand Forks and attended Grand Forks Central High School. He lived a short time in Colorado Springs, CO on a ranch. He returned to Grand Forks where he worked at Concrete Incorporated, Ryan Potato, Driscoll Brothers and currently for MinDak Growers, in Grand Forks. He married Peggy Aker in Sisseton, SD on December 18, 1976.

Les enjoyed camping, fishing, riding his Harley and bicycling with his grandson Logen.

He is survived by his wife Peggy of East Grand Forks, 2 sons Les Aaron Schraeder of Williston, North Dakota, Dean (June) Kassa, of East Grand Forks, daughter Kailee Schraeder of East Grand Forks, three grandchildren, Logen, Ronnie and Brandon, one sister, Roxanne Bechhold of East Grand Forks, three half sisters, Julie (Ray) Patnaude of Grand Junction, AZ, Sandy Morrison, of Fargo, North Dakota, and Nancy (Rick) Hegstrom of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, half brother David Iverson, half sister Karen Brown, and two brothers in laws, Gary Bechhold and Jerry Morrison.

1925-2012

August 6, 1925 - September 22, 2012

Arthur "Art" Schroeder age 87, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, formerly of Euclid, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2012, at Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks.

Arthur L. Schroeder was born on August 6, 1925, at the St. Anne's Hospital, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the son of August and Ida (Schulz) Schroeder. Art grew up and attended school in Euclid, Minnesota. Art joined the United States Army where he served our country for two years during the Korean Conflict. He worked on the family farm near Euclid for a number of years. Art worked for the Grand Forks Public School system as a mechanic and carpenter for 37 years before retiring in 1991.

Art is survived by his step-son, Ron Paulson along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Ida; wife, Pearl (Nee) Paulson; brothers, William, Albert, Carl, Oscar, August Jr. and Rudolph; sisters, Elsie, Amelia, Minnie, Alma and Ida.

Gerald Surprenant, age 46 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Gerald "Jerry" Wayne Surprenant was born on June 22, 1966 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the son of Roy and Patricia (Paschke) Surprenant. Jerry grew up in East Grand Forks and graduated from East Grand Forks Central High School with the Class of 1984. Following his graduation from high school he went on and attended Aker's Business College. He then moved to Texas where he worked in Food Service. In 1993 he moved back to East Grand Forks where he worked at the Speedway and Perkins Restaurants in Grand Forks. Jerry also worked for American Crystal Sugar Company in East Grand Forks until the time of his death.

Family members of Jerry include his parents, Roy and Patricia of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; siblings, Tim (Deborah) Surprenant of Waco, TX, Tony Surprenant of National City, CA, Daniel (Jan) Surprenant of Grand Prairie, TX, Susan Surprenant of Hettinger, North Dakota, Roger Surprenant of Mesa, AZ, Richard "Chopper" Surprenant of Reeder, North Dakota, and Denise (Alan) Pruett of Pawnee, IL.

Patricia Ann (Ayotte) Stengl

1940-2013

March 17, 1940 - August 14, 2013

Patricia A. Stengl, 73, of Oslo, Minnesota, passed away surrounded by her family on August 14, 2013, at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Patricia Ann Ayotte was born was born on March 17, 1940 the daughter of Joseph and Cecelia (Brault) Ayotte in Gentilly, Minnesota. Patricia grew up in Oklee, Minnesota, where she graduated from high school.

On January 5, 1961 she was united in marriage to Darrell Stengl in Oklee, Minnesota. To this union five children were raised in the Tabor, Minnesota, area. Pat worked nearly her entire career as a Lab Technician at J.R. Simplot Co. in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Pat enjoyed playing cards, bingo, gardening, canning, collecting porcelain dolls and other collectables. Pat truly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Family members of Pat include her children, Mary Lynn Olson of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Randy Stengl of Little Falls, Minnesota, Tammy (Kevin) Johnson of Alvarado, Minnesota, Scott (Shelly) Stengl of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and Troy (Sandra) Stengl of Oslo, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; siblings, Frank Ayotte of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Theresa (Jim) Schmitz of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, Raymond (Cathy) Ayotte of Colorado Springs, CO, Lorraine Schmitz of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, Jake (Phyllis) Martell of Oklee, Minnesota, Dave Martell of Gentilly, Minnesota, and Kathy (Norm) Brenna of Thief River Falls, Minnesota.

She preceded in death by her parents; husband Darrell Stengl on February 23, 1999; step-father, Francis P. Martell and son-in-law Ricky Olson.

LaVern (Swenson) Syrstad

1922-2013

March 22, 1922 - December 20, 2013

LaVern F. Syrstad, 91, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died Friday, December 20, 2013, at the Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

LaVern Syrstad was born March 22, 1922 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the daughter of Mandus and Elsa (Carlstrom) Swenson. She graduated from East Grand Forks Central High School in 1940. She attended Normal Teachers Training, took correspondence courses at UND, and taught school for 6 years.

She married Omar Syrstad at Augustana Lutheran Church, Grand Forks on August 3, 1947. She worked as a bookkeeper at Warner Hardware in Minneapolis and Norbys Department store in Grand Forks. After they built their home on Rhinehart Drive in 1955 she became involved in community affairs, being the township assessor for 38 years, school census, and also a member of the township zoning committee for several years. She also taught Sunday school and served a term on the church council.

She was instrumental in organizing the Hartsville Homemakers Club in 1957 of which she was a charter member for 47 years. She was a member of a couple of card clubs which she enjoyed. LaVern was always willing to give her time and knowledge and was a good homemaker, helpful neighbor, good mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and an award winning gardener.

She is survived by a son Mark (Carrie) Syrstad of Simi Valley, CA, 3 grandchildren: Eric (Tennille), Ann (Lars), and Sara, great grandson Leif, sister Laurene Boushee of East Grand Forks, sister in law Lenore Syrstad, brother in laws, Morris and Allen Syrstad, and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Omar, and 2 brothers Elmer and Herman.

She was a lifelong member of Augustana Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed, married, and buried.

Scott Larry Selk

1959-2014

February 25, 1959 - October 17, 2014

Scott L. Selk age 55 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2014 at his home with his loving family at his side after a lengthy battle with Multiple Myeloma.

Scott Larry Selk was born on February 25, 1959 in Bottineau, North Dakota, the son of Larry and Darlene (Green) Selk. Scott grew up in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, where he attended school and graduated from the East Grand Forks Senior High School with the Class of 1977. Following his high school graduation he attended the North Dakota, State School of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota.

He married Karla Anderson on April 22, 1995 in East Grand Forks. Scott worked for Skinner Roofing in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and also KC Electric in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. He was active coaching youth football and baseball and a very active member of the East Grand Forks Blue Line Club. His happiest times were watching his sons compete and spending time with them hunting & fishing.

Family members of Scott include his sons, Trevor and Dylan Selk of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; siblings, Debbie (Tony) Palmiscno of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and Todd (Kristi) Selk of Spokane, WA; nieces and nephews, Tyler (Haley) Palmiscno, Gina (Eric) Sanders, Betsey (Jordan) McIntyre, Michael Palmiscno, Devon Holmes-Selk, Ciera Holmes-Selk and Eian Holmes-Selk.

Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Darlene Selk.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Altru Cancer Center or Hospice of the Red River Valley. A special thank-you to Dr. Dentchev and the staff of Altru Cancer Center.

Diana "Dee Dee" (MJoen) Stadem

1954-2011

April 25, 1954 - April 15, 2011

Diana "Dee Dee" Stadem age 56 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2011 at her home in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, surrounded by family.

Dee Dee was born on April 25, 1954 in Crookston, Minnesota, the daughter of Donald and Mickie (Acker) Mjoen. Dee Dee grew up and attended school in Crookston, graduating in 1972. Dee Dee married Paul Stadem on September 7, 1974 in Crookston. They made their home in Moorhead, Minnesota, for two years. In 1976 they moved to Minneapolis for Paul to attend Dental School. In 1980, they moved to East Grand Forks where they started a dentistry practice. Dee Dee worked at the practice until her children were born. Dee Dee dedicated herself to her children and family, in 1993 she began work as a paraprofessional in the East Grand Forks school system. She enjoyed spending time with her "Girlie-Girls" and relaxing at their cabin at Bad Medicine Lake. Dee Dee was also an active member of Mendenhall Presbyterian Church.

During her long battle with cancer she never complained once, she was an excellent role model to the end. We were blessed to have her in our lives; we just wish it was for longer.

She is survived by her husband: Paul Stadem, East Grand Forks, Minnesota; children: Nick Stadem, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Erica Stadem, Washington, DC; parents: Donald and Mickie Mjoen, Crookston, Minnesota; brothers: Michael (Gretchen) Mjoen, Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Mark Mjoen, Coon Rapids, Minnesota; sisters: Debra (Ronald) Kroll, East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and Dawn (Anthony) Manetta, New York, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

Norma K. Sersland, 64, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Norma Kay Sersland was born on May 10, 1944 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the daughter of Arthur and Ariel (Morrow) Dahlin. Norma grew up in rural East Grand Forks, Minnesota, where she attended school in rural East Grand Forks and Fisher, Minnesota. She graduated from Oak Grove High School in Fargo, North Dakota. Norma then attended Aakers Business College and worked at Deaconess Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

On March 15, 1969 she was united in marriage to Gerald "Jerry" Sersland in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Norma worked for Tri Valley Head Start in East Grand Forks for 23 years and then at St. Michael's Day Care in Grand Forks until her retirement. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 157 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Norma enjoyed doing volunteer work and loved going to the lake in Bemidji, Minnesota, and also enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends.

Family members who survive Norma include her son Shannon (Tricia) Sersland of Grand Forks, North Dakota; step-children: Jeff (Renae) Sersland of Belize, Central America and Dawn Sersland of Mekinock, North Dakota; one sister: Sharon (Eugene) Driscoll of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; one brother: Russell Dahlin of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; two grandchildren: Ashley and Faith Sersland.

Norma is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Jerry on April 15, 2005.

Bella Sherette, 87, formerly of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died Wednesday, November 7, 2007 in Phoenix, AZ.

Bella Sherette was born November 15, 1919 in Rural Fisher, Minnesota, the daughter of Isaac and Gunhild (Qualley) Anderson. She grew up in Fisher, Minnesota, and attended Fisher School. She married Joseph Sherette in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, on September 6, 1939. They moved to Idaho in 1939 and moved back to East Grand Forks in 1942.

She is survived by three sons: John Sherette and Allan Sherette both of Phoenix, AZ, and Leon Sherette of Fullerton, CA; and three brothers: Arnold Anderson of Powell, Ohio, Tharald (Lois) Anderson and Norris (Elsie) Anderson both of Grand Forks.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph on October 23, 2003; by one daughter, Gwendolyn Sherette, a brother, Oscar; and by three sisters, Alice, Emma and Alma.

Jean Salverson, 72, of Winger, Minnesota, died Monday, March 12, 2007, at the Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Jean Salverson was born January 22, 1935, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the daughter of Clarence and Bernadette Helen (Driscoll) Arnold. She attended school in Fisher, Minnesota. She married Edward Salverson in Crookston, Minnesota, on January 5, 1953. She worked for Ness Eggs in Grand Forks, for several potato wash plants in the Grand Forks area and for Simplot for many years. She also delivered for Olson Drug in East Grand Forks.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna (Jeff) Lucken of Winger, Minnesota, and Barbara (Robert) Reagan living in Nevada; by ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Joyce Walters of Witchita Falls, Texas; one brother, Robert (Sandra) Arnold, of Cottonwood, AZ; and her best friend Amelia Krom of Grand Forks.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six children in infancy and two grandsons, Jason Regan and Andrew Austin.

She was a member of United Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

In Lieu of Flowers, memorials are preferred.

Alice G. (Hegg) Stout

1917-2007

April 17, 1917 - March 29, 2007

Alice G. Stout, 89 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, March 29, 2007.

Alice was the oldest of twelve children born to Joseph and Hannah (Helgeson) Hegg on April 17, 1917. She was united in marriage to Archie Stout on June 2nd, 1942. They resided in Crookston, Minnesota, until 1970, and at that time moved to East Grand Forks, Minnesota. In 1973, Archie passed away unexpectedly. Alice was an active member of First Lutheran Church, and the D.A.V. Auxiliary.

She devoted her life to her family. Alice's greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to bake with them and for them. She always made holiday baking special. In 2001, her family was extended when she moved to the Good Samaritan Village.

As her health worsened, "Miss Alice" was comforted and cared for unconditionally by her Physician, Tricia Langlois, whom she loved and trusted. We all loved Mom/Grandma so much. She will greatly missed…she already is.

She is survived by her daughters, Jeanne (Ernest) Hubbard, Norfolk, VA, and Barbara (Paul) Driscoll, East Grand Forks, Minnesota; grandchildren: Heidi (Dale) McDonald, Matthew (Suraya) Driscoll, Kristen Hopfenspirger, Michelle (Kevin) Bloom, and Marcie (Mark) Mostad; great-grandchildren: Natalie and Mark McDonald, Tom, Tyler, Emma, and Ellie Driscoll, and Jack, Macyn, and Breck Bloom; sisters, Joyce Markle (OR), and Audrey (Donald) Wieland (WI); and brothers, Richard (Annette) Hegg, and Clifford Hegg of Crookston, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Archie; grandson, Erich; brothers, Clayton, Kenneth, Marlin, John, and Harvey; and sisters; Avis and Helen.

Dorothy Jean McDonald was born on September 24, 1926 in Arvilla, North Dakota, the daughter of John and Gladys (Erickson) McDonald. Dorothy grew up and attended grade school in Arvilla, North Dakota, and then attended Larimore High School. On September 4, 1946 Dorothy was united in marriage to Floyd M. Spicer in Larimore, North Dakota. They made their home in Fisher, Minnesota. Dorothy was a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Wayne (Sherry) Spicer of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Dennis Spicer of Jamestown, North Dakota, Marilyn Spicer of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Kevin (Sara) Spicer of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, 23 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, one brother; Virlyn McDonald of Arvilla, North Dakota, and one sister; Jean Cox of Arvilla, North Dakota, and Best Friend; Skippy "Sweet Pea".

Preceding Dorothy in death is her parents; husband Floyd on September 15, 2003, one brother; Leroy and one sister; Viola.

Helen Short, 83 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Warren, Minnesota.

Helen Short was born April 27, 1925 in rural East Grand Forks, Minnesota, the daughter of Helmer and Martha (Soreide) Horken. She grew up in rural East Grand Forks and attended rural schools. She worked on the family farm. She married Vernard Short on April 13, 1950 in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. She worked at the East Grand Forks Good Samaritan Center, several restaurants including McDonalds, East Grand Forks, Minnesota, before retiring in 2004. She worked with the foster grandparent program following her retirement.

She is survived by two children, Howard (Cheryl) of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Linda (Norman) Lindemoen of Newfolden, Minnesota; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Bernice Armstrong, of Greenfield, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Ella and one in infancy; and three brothers: Cliff, Arnold and Harold.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of Norway and the Foster Grandparent Program.


Services: Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Rural East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Burial: Nisbet Cemetery, Rural East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Carrie Olivia (Nelson) Stavig

1914-2008

July 31, 1914 - October 4, 2008

Carrie O. Nelson Stavig, 94, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Larimore, North Dakota.

Carrie was born on July 31, 1914, in Higdem Township of Polk County, Minnesota, to Gustav and Olivia (Quern) Nelson. She lived on a farm with her parents and siblings near Oslo, Minnesota, and attended rural school. On January 17, 1937 she married George Stavig. George died March 24, 2007.

She worked alongside her husband as bookkeeper while managing elevators at Ada, Minnesota, Milnor, North Dakota, and Petersburg, North Dakota. They moved to Oaks, North Dakota, where Goerge and Carrie were co-owners of Oaks Grain and Supply until retiring in 1975. They retired to East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and Carrie worked part-time for Dr. Jacob Burke. In May of 2006 they moved to the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Larimore, North Dakota.

Carrie was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Carrie enjoyed traveling, being a loyal Minnesota, Twins Fan and spent many hours playing cards with family and friends and spoiling her Grandchildren with her Lefsa.

Carrie is survived by a daughter Yvonne (Elton) Magnus of Petersburg, North Dakota; and a son George Wentzel Stavig of Crystal, Minnesota; three grandchildren; Loren (Julie) Magnus of Niagara, North Dakota; Jeanine (Russ) Brown of Colgate, North Dakota, and Douglas Magnus of Bismarck, North Dakota; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

Carrie is preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, one sister and one grandson, Greg Allen Magnus.

Carrie was under the care of Good Samaritan Nursing Staff and Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Loyd Schulz

1924-2009

August 5, 1924 - January 26, 2009

Loyd Schulz, 84, of rural East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died on Monday, January 26, 2009, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Loyd was born on August 5, 1924 near Euclid, Minnesota, the son of Herman and Esther (Johnson) Schulz. When he was two years old his mother and new born sister died of polio. His father remarried Leona Vallafskey, who raised him as her son. He grew up helping on the family farm. He was united in marriage to Doris Vik on June 7th, 1953 at first Lutheran Church in East Grand Forks.

They made their home on the "Point" of south East Grand Forks for 42 years then move to a home on the north end of East Grand Forks after the flood of 1997. He worked as a truck driver for Midwest Motors Express for 35 years and farmed near Euclid.

He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the East Grand Forks Eagles Club #350. He had a strong faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior, read his Bible daily, loved anything to do with farming and enjoyed going out with his wife to play bingo.

Loyd is survived by his wife: Doris, East Grand Forks, Minnesota; children: Paulette (Laddie) Novak, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Darrell (Marlyce Ballingrud) Schulz, East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Larry Schulz, Emerado, North Dakota, and Tim Schulz, Grand Forks, North Dakota; grandchildren: Paul (Jamie) Novak, Patrick (LeaAnn) Novak, Gina (Chris) Skinner, Jared Schulz, Jennifer and Kassandra Schulz; 3 great grandchildren; sisters: Elaine Boushee and Adeline Brantl; sister-in-law: Marilyn Schulz; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; stepmother; brothers: Herbert and Ralph Schulz.

"Ann" Scheving

1928-2009

August 2, 1928 - March 11, 2009

Adorine "Ann" Scheving, 80, of Mentor, Minnesota, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at home.

Adorine Austin was born on August 2, 1928 in Fisher, Minnesota, the daughter of Frank and Cora (Enright) Austin. She graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1946. Adorine was united in marriage to John R. Scheving on October 25, 1949. Together they raised six sons and three daughters. They lived in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, until 1976 when they moved to Maple Lake, near Mentor, Minnesota. Since entering retirement, Adorine and John have spent many winters traveling to warmer climates, sharing wonderful times with family and friends.

Faith and family were Adorine's top priorities in life. She loved the Lord dearly, and brought honor and praise to Him faithfully. Adorine delighted in her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid reader and enjoyed photography, particularly photos of her family.

Adorine will be missed by her husband John of Mentor, Minnesota; children: John P. (Darlene) of Crookston, Minnesota, Sue (Scott) Stinar of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Scotty of Bloomington, Minnesota, Tim of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Tony (Lori) of Moorhead, Minnesota, Jeff (Kathy) of Warroad, Minnesota, Joel (Melissa) of Greer, SC, Joni (Dan) Burris of Erskine and Stacy of Ada, Minnesota; 26 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sisters: Loretta (David) Norton and Peg Norton both of East Grand Forks, brothers: Jack Austin of Fisher, Minnesota, and Keith (Ann) Austin of Fargo, North Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Ed and Robert Austin.

Ingrid Karin Shawstad

1939-2009

October 28, 1939 - September 20, 2009

Ingrid Karin Odine (Lewerenz) Shawstad, 69, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2009 at Altru Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Ingrid was born on October 28, 1939 in Rieder, Ost Harz, Germany. The daughter of Erdreich and Hildegard (Schulze) Lewerenz. She was baptized, confirmed and completed her schooling in Rieder before coming to the United States May 1, 1963. Ingrid lived in Cass Lake on her 80 acres loving her many horses before moving to Grand Forks, North Dakota. She bartended at various establishments throughout the Grand Forks area. Ingrid was united in marriage to James (Bud) A. Shawstad on October 5, 1971. She enjoyed being a home maker and raising their children. She was a member of four bowling leagues and the East Grand Forks Eagles. She enjoyed shopping, gardening, knitting, and relaxing at the lake.

She is survived by her husband, son Jeffrey (Taryn) Shawstad, Benica, CA; daughter Andrea (Mannfried) Pospisil, Gernrode, Germany; sons James (Pam) Shawstad, Temple, TX; Joel (Jackie) Shawstad, Madison, WI; daughters Jodi Shawstad, Leander, TX; Diana (Christopher) Moncada, East Grand Forks, Minnesota; and son Christian (Kalie) Shawstad, Grand Forks, North Dakota; 16 grandchildren, 2 great-granddaughters; brother Klaus Peter (Bäbil) Lewerenz, Gernrode, Germany; and several nieces, nephews, cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and parents.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Altru Cancer Center.

A reception will follow at the VFW in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Ann Elizabeth Senger, 80, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Edgewood Vista, East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Ann was born on April 29, 1929 in Reynolds, North Dakota, the daughter of Gerard and Cornelia (Langenberg) Nefs. She grew up and attended country school in Reynolds, North Dakota. Ann moved to Grand Forks and worked for Herburgers. She married Tony Senger on September 7, 1953 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grand Forks. They owned and operated Senger's Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store in East Grand Forks. She enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Maple Lake. Ann was an avid dancer to her husbands music. She was president of the ladies guild at Sacred Heart for a number of years.

She is survived by her children: Michael, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Tony Jr. (Brenda), Thompson, North Dakota, and Mary (Randy) Ekren, East Grand Forks, Minnesota; sister: Dorothy Nienas, Grand Forks, North Dakota; 7 grandchildren: Jennifer (Eric) Senger, Kalie Senger, Abbigale Senger, Chelsey Ekren, Tyler Ekren, Alexandra Senger and Jordan Senger; 2 great grandchildren: Aspen Edwards and Alison Kluckman She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Tony, on May 7, 2003; brothers: Frank, John and Jake; and sisters: Mary, Josie and Nellie

Raymond John Stinar

1941-2010

September 3, 1941 - October 18, 2010

Raymond Stinar, 69, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, October 18, 2010 at the Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Raymond John Stinar was born on September 3, 1941, to John and Helen (Dostal) Stinar at the Deaconess Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Raymond attended Grand Forks Public Schools and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1959. He played basketball, Legion and College Baseball. Ray graduated from Mayville State College in 1965 with a degree in Business Education, Physical Education and Health.

He was united in marriage to Wilma Mullet on June 5, 1965 in Washington Lutheran Church of Northwood, North Dakota. They were married for 45 years. He started his teaching and coaching career in McVille, North Dakota. In 1969 he accepted a position in Mahnomen, Minnesota. He finished his career at East Grand Forks Senior High, retiring in 2000. Ray also taught Drivers Training in East Grand Forks for many years. Ray coached High School Basketball for a total of 26 years. He was inducted into the Grand Forks Central's Hall of Fame in 1995 and into the Minnesota, State Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000.

Survivors of Ray include his wife, Wilma of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, daughters, Nicole Knudson, Amy (Rick) Rivera, Sara (Mark) Ellingsworth all of Shakopee, Minnesota, three grandsons, Bailey, Riley and Luke, sister, LaVerne McMenamy of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and many nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, William Mullet, David Mullet, Norman Renden, Duane Loewen, sisters-in-law Hattie Blaufuss, Donna Tarver and Mary Luggerio.

Preceding Ray in death are his parents, brother, Irwin Stinar, sister, Jean Renden, brother-in-law, Bob McMenamy and niece Lynae Sondreal.

Ray will be greatly missed by his family, his many friends and his pride and joy, "His Grandsons".

Loran K. Stortroen

1917-2011

June 21, 1917 - January 14, 2011

Loran Stortroen, age 93, of Crookston, Minnesota, and formerly of Climax, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, January 14th, 2011 at Riverview Memory Care Center in Crookston, Minnesota.

Loran K. Stortroen was born on June 21, 1917 in rural Climax, Minnesota, the son of Knute and Hilda (Berg) Stortroen.

Loran attended school at District 6 and began farming with his father. On September 11, 1942 he married Gladys Signora Kleven of Fisher, Minnesota, in rural Climax, Minnesota. He then served 3 years in the United States Army, stationed mainly on the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and was honorably discharged on November 2, 1945.

Gladys and Loran raised four children on farms near Fisher and Climax, Minnesota. While farming, Loran became adept at carpentry, mechanics and gardening. He served on the Vineland Township Board for 52 years and was also very active in the Farmers Union Organization. Sand Hill became their church home where Loran was especially involved in the Sand Hill Cemetery Association. They both moved to Riverview Care Center in April of 2007. Gladys passed away June 15, 2007.

Loran is survived by his children, Sherman (Doreen) Stortroen of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Eileen (George) Gunderson of Buxton, North Dakota, Janice (Robert) Tjon of Twin Valley, Minnesota, and Larry Stortroen of Climax, Minnesota, 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, one sister, Helen Prudhomme of Plattsmouth, NE, one brother, Arvid (Marlene) Stortroen of Climax, Minnesota, along with many nieces and nephews.

Loran is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Sidney Stortroen; and a great-grandson Bobby Christoffers, sister in law Lois Stortroen and brother in law Don Prudhomme.

Patricia Schulz, age 75, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2011, at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota

Patricia Louise Greene was born on August 8, 1936 in Roseau County, Minnesota, the daughter of Lawrence and Irene (Larson) Greene. Patricia grew up near Roseau and attended school in Roseau, Minnesota.

Following her graduation she attended Aaker's Business College in Grand Forks, North Dakota. On November 17, 1954 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Schulz in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. She worked for Nash Finch and National T and then worked for Farmsco of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, for a period of time. She moved to Warroad, Minnesota, and married Arthur Schulz and worked for Ben Franklin Store in Warroad before retiring and moving back to East Grand Forks in 2006.

Family members who survive Patricia include her children, Vicki (Ken Sweeney) Ryan, Nancy Schulz, Lori (Dan) Hennessy all of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Tina (Craig) O'Halloran of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Todd Schulz of Thief River Falls, Minnesota; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild along with a brother, Bruce (Bonnie) Greene of Anniston, AL.

Patricia is preceded in death by her parents; a brother Charles Greene and her husband Arthur Schulz.

Greg Schleif

1953-2012

August 12, 1953 - December 18, 2012

Greg Schleif of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, passed away at the age of 59 on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Greg Schleif was born on August 12, 1953, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Merlind and Janet (Phillips) Schleif. Greg grew up and attended school at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, graduating with the Class of 1971. Following his graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force in October of 1973 where he served at the Grand Forks Air Force Base. Greg was Honorable Discharged from the Air Force after 20 years of service in October of 1993.

Greg retired as a Tech Sargent. On September 3, 1988 he was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Nicholls in Warren, Minnesota, and on April 25, 1998 he became dad to daughter Casey. He was currently employed at the Grand Forks Air Force Base for MCS.

As well as being a loving father and husband he had a passion for cat fishing and had finished every Cats Incredible Tournament since it began. He loved to BBQ on his deck in the summer and bowl with his friends in the winter. Greg was also an avid Minnesota, Gopher Hockey Fan.

Greg is survived by his loving wife and daughter, Ruth Ann and Casey of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; mother, Janet Schleif of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sister, Lynn (Jeff) Schoen of Farmington, Minnesota; aunts, Marian Phillips of Bloomington,MN, Judy Baskett, Denver, CO; mother and father-in-law, Francis and Sharon Nicholls of Warren, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Mary Kay (Vern) Voll of Roseau, Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Robert (Jane) Nicholls of Monrovia, IN and Terry (Sherie) Nicholls of Grand Forks, North Dakota, many nieces, nephews along with his cat fishing and bowling families.

Greg was preceded in death by his father, Merlind and a brother Don.

Wilma Marie (Berglund) Schneibel

1933-2013

Wilma Marie Schneibel, 79, passed away Monday**, March 5, 2013, at her home in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Wilma Marie Berglund was born August 10, 1933 to William and Alice (Desrosier) Berglund in Crookston, Minnesota. She attended school in Crookston and was married to George Schneibel on October 16, 1951 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Wilma worked for Old Dutch for 17 years, Charlie's Bakery for 3 years, and Valley Memorial Hospital for 10 years before her retirement in 1997.

Wilma is survived by her children: Joni (Joe) Riske, Fisher, Minnesota; Christine Schneibel, Hallock, Minnesota; Bertha (Robin) Burdick, Idaho Falls, ID; Paul (Julie) Schneibel, Manvel, North Dakota; David Schneibel, East Grand Forks; and a brother, William Allen Berglund, Idaho Falls; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her husband George on July 26, 2005; grandson Bradley Riske; step-grandson, James Hutton; brother, Gerald Berglund; and two sisters: Shirley Ekren and Lucille Poltiski.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
