Jane A. (Connell) Galstad

1946-2013

November 28, 1946 - September 11, 2013

Biography--

Jane Galstad passed peacefully away at her home with her family beside her on September 11, 2013.

Jane was born in Montrose, Scotland, on November 28, 1946, to her parents, Jim and Jean Connell. Her formal schooling was done in Montrose, Scotland. In 1964, Jane immigrated to the United States and was proud to have become a U.S. citizen.

On May 3, 1976, Jane married, the love of her life, Irvin Galstad and together they raised six children.

Jane worked as a dental assistant, a lab technician at Pillsbury, a radio advertising executive and as office manager at Galstad Dental Clinic. Her hobbies were golfing and bowling. She was an avid bowler and once earned the Grand Forks city championship title. She enjoyed traveling, and spending time at the family's various homes on Lake of the Woods. She liked to fish and ski.

Jane was passionate about the hockey program in East Grand Forks. She served as president of the East Grand Forks Blue LIne Club and was instrumental in building the VFW hockey arena. Although she lived most of her life in northern Minnesota, Jane never lost touch with her Scottish heritage, often traveling back to her homeland and always welcomed a steady stream of Scottish family and friends as visitors throughout the years. Jane had a larger-than-life personality that will not soon be forgotten.

Jane relished her time as wife, mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren in particular were her special treasure. She always enjoyed watching their events, albeit a bit superstitious and never wanting to "bring on the bad luck." She was a sassy and saucy Nana right up to the end (wink, wink, smooch, smooch). She was fiercely loyal. Over all her years, Jane expected and inspired excellence throughout her family. She took great pride in all her family's accomplishments.

Dorothy (Hylden) "Dee" Gronhovd

1924-2009

December 31, 1924 - March 30, 2009

Biography--

Dorothy (Dee) Gronhovd passed away at her home in Grand Forks on Monday, March 30, 2009, with her pastor and family at her bedside.

Dorothy Hope Hylden was born in Park River, North Dakota, the daughter of David and Alvina Hylden on December 31, 1924. She was baptized and confirmed in Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church and graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural and Training School in Park River. She received her BA from Concordia College, Moorhead, taught English at Warren and in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

On June 19, 1949, she married Gordon Gronhovd. They moved to Racine, Wisconsin, where her husband was an engineer for Case. Dee worked as a nurse's aid in a local hospital. They later moved to Grand Forks and raised three sons. Throughout this time, Dee was engaged in many activities. At United Lutheran, she sang in the choir and worked with the nursery children. Active in the women's organizations, she was faithful in serving where needed. Her interest in the work of the church continued at Hope Covenant.

One of the great endeavors of Dee and Gordon was to support the Wycliffe Bible translation organization, which involved winter months of service in Arizona and even in Colombia, South America. She roughed it there with her husband as they traveled by motorcycle and wore high boots to protect against snakes. She also hosted and entertained members of the Wycliffe organization who came to UND for the summer linguistics program.

Dee and her husband traveled extensively, visiting family ancestral sites in Europe, mission sites in South America, and business places in Australia. She loved travel and enjoyed music, especially playing instruments from the string band of her childhood. Those who knew her admired her energy and enthusiasm. A wonderful upbeat attitude carried her through trying situations. She met her final illness with that same resolve and courage. Her Christian faith was strong and sustained her to the end.

During a great part of her life she maintained and often exhibited a large doll collection, part of which she had inherited from her mother. The dolls were displayed for some years at the Rugby Museum and at the Myra Museum in Grand Forks.

Dee is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Gordon, three sons (Paul of Grand Forks and Allen and Keith of Minneapolis), and three grandchildren (Veronique, John, and Philip). Two brothers also survive, Donald and Myron of Park River. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Duane.

Biography--

Edwin "Eddie" Haug, 87 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and formally of Fisher, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, June 4, 2007 at the Valley Memorial Homes -- Woodside Village in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Eddie Haug was born on May 10, 1920 the son of Helmer and Alma Haug, on a farm in Roome Township, near Fisher, Minnesota. He attended country school near his home and worked on the family farm. When he was 14 years old he moved a mile to another farm which became his permanent home. He was interested in music and taught himself to play the guitar and yodel, practicing behind the barn.

As a teenager, Eddie entered many amateur talent contests in the region and was a first place winner on several occasions. Eventually he was hired by a band called "Big Ole Show Company" and entertained on the radio once a week. He acquired the performance name of "Lonesome Cowboy" at that time. At the same time, he and his twin brothers operated a farm near Fisher. He continued entertaining, singing with the "Fred Cronk Tent Show", "Tex and Rex and the Bronco Busters" and also sang on a radio program sponsored by Minneapolis Moline Machine Company.

On August 29, 1944 he married Donna Willert of Crookston, Minnesota. They made their home on the family farm and as time went on Eddie became less involved in entertaining, focusing on his sugar beet operation and family. Eddie and Donna became parents when their daughter Janet was born in 1945 and later daughter Kathryn was born in 1959. In 1966, Eddie was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and continued farming until his retirement in 1977. At that time, he and his wife enjoyed traveling and celebrated the arrival of four grandsons and one granddaughter. They moved to East Grand Forks, Minnesota, in October of 1993, where he resided until April of 2007.

During his lifetime, Eddie served on the Fisher School Board for 12 years, sang in the Fisher Lutheran Church choir and was a member of the church council. He served on the American Crystal Truck Haul Committee and was a member of the Fisher Lions Club, Valley Memorial Homes Board of Directors, and the VM 1000 Club. He and his wife, Donna recently were awarded a gold leaf on the giving tree of Valley Memorial Homes.
