Mildred Joyce (Walker) Gunderson

1921-2009

October 11, 1921 - April 1, 2009

Biography--

Mildred Joyce Gunderson, 87, of rural Climax, Minnesota, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at the Villa St. Vincent nursing home in Crookston, Minnesota. Mildred was born in Sheridan County, Montana on October 11, 1921, the oldest child of Frank and Annie (Berland) Walker. In 1922, her family moved to Blake township in the Lakehead district, near Fort William, Ontario, Canada. She attended grade school in Blake township. In 1939, she came back to the United States and lived with the Valor family in rural Climax, graduating from high school there in 1942.

She worked for various area farmers, and then moved to the Berland Brothers farm in Bygland township and worked as a cook for the entire farm crew for several years. She married George E. Gunderson on July 18, 1954, in Bygland township, Minnesota. They made their home in rural Climax, Minnesota, farming small grains, and raising chickens and pigs. George died February 25, 1975.

Mildred was a quiet, gentle woman and a kind and caring mother, always giving of time and talent where needed, helping with homework, mending clothes, cooking, chauffeuring, and helping with grandkids. She had an intense love for cats, flowers, and gardening, and enjoyed collecting recipes and postage stamps. She could often be found harvesting her homegrown fruits and vegetables, including apples, plums, grapes, strawberries, raspberries, juneberries, chokecherries, gooseberries, rhubarb and asparagus. Her flowers kept her busy in the summer, and her vegetable garden kept her busy canning and freezing in the fall. She always had cookies or cake and iced tea or coffee to offer her guests, and a very large meal was not far behind.

In addition to being a wonderful Mother, homemaker, and cook, Mildred worked fulltime as a talented and professional seamstress for over 25 years including 13 years at Norby's department store, and then at Silverman's, Crookston Town & Country, and Kristen's Bridal.
