MeriDee Lynn Croy
1971-2007
and

Mollie Elizabeth Coppola-Croy

c2002-2007

Biography--

MeriDee Lynn Croy, age 35, and Mollie Elizabeth Croy, age 5, died Monday, September 17, 2007 at their home in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

MeriDee was born on October 1, 1971 in Grand Forks, North Dakota to Jay and Linda (Guerard) Croy. She attended middle school in East Grand Forks and Coleraine, Minnesota and East Grand Forks Senior High School. Following Graduation from high school in 1990, MeriDee moved to New York with her life-long friend, Bonnie . . . For ten years, she lived and worked as a nanny and household manager with Stacy and Cliff Chaplin's family. MeriDee loved Samantha, Willie, and the triplets Cady, Alex, and Benny.

In 1996, MeriDee began her post-secondary studies at Nassau College in Garden City, New York. During her second year, her studies were delayed due to a back injury from a motor vehicle accident on October 20, 1997, her mother's birth day. MeriDee returned to Nassau College, earning her Associates Degree in Applied Science in 1998 with a cumulative grade point average of 3.95. MeriDee frequently expressed her disgust that a "B" in a golf course lowered her 4.0 grade point average!

MeriDee remained on Long Island, working as a Licensed/Registered Radiologic Technologist at Healthline of Commack in Commach, New York and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, New York. While working at "Good Sam," MeriDee met Peter Coppola. On March 13, 2002, MeriDee and Peter were delighted to announce the birth of Mollie Elizabeth Croy.

MeriDee and Mollie moved to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. They shared their lives with Aunt Lisa, Uncle Gordy, and cousins Reece, Peyton, and Croix Richards. MeriDee fell on the ice in 2004 and reinjured her back. Consequently, she was no longer able to lift and move patients. MeriDee was forced to alter her vocational dreams.

MeriDee applied, interviewed, and was hired as a Radiologic Technology Instructor at Keiser College -- Kendall Campus near Miami, Florida. MeriDee and Mollie relocated in 2005 from Pennsylvania during the summer of multiple hurricanes. MeriDee's parents/Mollie's NaNa and PaPa were quite stressed as each hurricane hit Florida. MeriDee repeatedly reassured her parents stating, "Think of the hurricane as a storm day in flip-flops!"

MeriDee and Mollie loved the Florida beaches, sun, temperatures . . . However, they missed the support of family members that lived several thousand miles away.

The first year's teaching experience and Mollie's near death health condition were the ultimate factors that began a downward spiral for MeriDee. She agreed to see a therapist and was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder in February, 2006. This was shortly after MeriDee was selected to receive one of five 2005 Keiser College Excellence in Teaching Award. The intense responsibilities at work, being a single parent with no extended family support, and only 24 hours in a day lead to MeriDee losing her teaching position at Keiser College and her means of financial support.

In March, 2007, MeriDee and Mollie returned to Minnesota to live with NaNa and PaPa. Mollie registered for kindergarten in May. MeriDee was apprehensive about kindergarten. Mollie was excited to meet Mrs. Rose and Mrs. Boushee at New Heights Kindergarten Orientation. Mollie thoroughly enjoyed meeting new, young friends and loved learning. She would share the happenings of her school day for hours in the evening.

MeriDee is survived by her parents, Jay and Linda (Guerard) Croy; her sister, Lisa (Croy) Richards; grandmothers, Joan K. Guerard and Muriel Croy-Miller; aunts, Marsha (Croy) Speed and Karlene (Knutson) Croy; uncles, Bradley Croy, Michael Guerard; bother-in-law, Gordon Richards; cousins, Reece, Peyton, and Croix Richards; great aunts, Harriet (Guerard) Peterson, Patrica (Guerard) Owens, Annabelle (Guerard) Witte, Shirley (Giese) Sanderson, Muriel (Giese) Barry, Virgina (Peterson) Croy; great-uncles, Conrad Giese, Boyd Giese, Donald Croy, and Bobby Owens; godparents, Jaclyn (Isaacson) and Michael Hurly.

Mollie is also survived by her father, Peter Coppola; grandparents, Shiela Coppola and Stephen Capoziello, Aunt Michelle and Uncle Robert Golini; cousins, Katherine, Jenna, and Allison Golini.

MeriDee was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Cecil W. Guerard and J. Clayton Croy.

Mollie was also preceded in death by her cousin, Jack Golini.

Memorials may be sent to the University of North Dakota Conflict Resolution Center, U.S. Coast Guard Mutual Assistance Fund, and the Grand Forks Community Violence Intervention Center.

Carbon monoxide caused death in
mother-daughter homicide-suicide

The Associated Press--

EAST GRAND FORKS, MINNESOTA -- A woman and her young daughter who died in what police said appeared to be a homicide-suicide both died of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to autopsy results released Wednesday.

Jay Croy said he found the bodies of his daughter, MeriDee Croy, 35, and her daughter, Mollie, 5, in the back seat of her car Monday afternoon inside their garage, with the motor running and a vacuum cleaner piping the exhaust into the back window.

Croy said she had long battled bipolar disorder.

"She left a four-page note in the car," Jay Croy said. "It was handwritten."

He said it included memories of happy times. The CD player was on, to a quiet style of music that was one of MeriDee's Croy's favorites.

"She had put a down comforter and pillows there, made a little bed," Jay said. "I only hope it was a peaceful thing for Mollie."

He said he had helped his daughter and granddaughter move to East Grand Forks from Florida about six months ago after the woman had lost her job and run into financial difficulties.

August 28, 1925 - September 18, 2007

Raymond Leonard "Ray" Driscoll, 82, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, died Tuesday September 18, 2007, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on August 28, 1925, to Gertrude (Henderson) Driscoll and Leonard Driscoll. He grew up on a farm near East Grand Forks Minnesota. After eight grades in a one room rural school, he graduated from Sacred Heart High School. He worked on the farm and attended the University of North Dakota in engineering.

He was drafted into the US Army in March of 1945. He was stationed at Camp Crower, MO; Fitzsimmons General Hospital, Denver, CO; the Blanche F. Sigman Hospital Ship out of the Port of Embarkation, Brooklyn New York; Camp Shanks, NY; and the Whitehall Street Dispensary, NY, NY. He served as an X-ray technician and in the military police. He flew the Driscoll Brothers helicopter. Ray and Adele visited China, Egypt, Israel, and traveled in the US and Mexico. Moving around the country with an open heart and a free spirit afforded her the opportunity to meet, fall in love and marry the love of her life, Carlyle "Corky" Driver Jr.. Upon Corky's death in 2008 and in spite of her many health issues, Connie remained in their Minnesota retreat until her death on August 12, 2014. Avis Mae (Knutson) Finne

1928-2007

May 13, 1928 - July 9, 2007

Avis Mae Finne, 79, died at her home in Crookston, Minnesota, on July 9th.

Avis was born May 13, 1928 in East Grand Forks to Axel and Mathilda Knutson. Upon earning a degree from Bemidji State Teachers College, she moved to Anchorage, Alaska where she worked as a teacher and at a credit union. Upon the birth of her first child, she stayed home to raise her family. Avis loved Alaska, and her children have many fond memories of camping and hiking in the Last Frontier. While in Alaska, the family built two cabins that were accessible only by float plane.

Anchorage was truly a frontier town in the 1950's, and Avis used to reminisce about living miles out of town and hitching a ride to work with neighbors, traveling on a bumpy two-lane gravel road. When she returned to Alaska for a visit in 1993, she was amazed to find that road is now a four-lane divided highway, and the rural area in which she lived had sprouted numerous subdivisions.

Avis and her children left Alaska in 1972, and lived in Oklahoma, Utah, and New Mexico before returning to East Grand Forks in 1977, where she lived until moving to Crookston for health reasons in 2005.

Avis was an active member and elder of Mendenhall Presbyterian Church for many years.

Her family wrote: "All who knew Avis will remember her wit and sense of humor. It was rare to find her in poor spirits, and she was not one to feel sorry for herself, even when facing declining health. One of her passions, for as long as anyone can remember, was doing counted cross stitch. An evening would find her working on a pattern, or indulging in another favorite activity, crossword puzzles and word games. A break would find her making toast with peanut butter for an evening snack, her favorite.

Avis lived through the flood of 1997, and she would mourn the destruction and loss of historic places such as Central Jr. High, where she attended high school, and Whitey's. Then, in the same breath, she would marvel at the new growth and development. She was proud of her town!"

Avis was preceded in death by her parents, and by her brother Donald. She is survived by her brother Roland of Allen Park, Mi.; son and daughter-in-law Kent and Amy Kohlhase, and grandson Jack, of Anchorage; daughter Kim Kohlhase of Jackson Hole, Wy.; and daughter Kay Kohlhase of Steamboat Springs, Co.
