Joyce (Stokke) Suckow

1924-2013

Died: December 08, 2013

Joyce Suckow, age 89, of Lengby, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday December 8th at Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston, Minnesota.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, December 13th at 11:00 AM at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Lengby with Rev. Aage Carlsen officiating. A time of gathering for family and friends will be held for one hour before the memorial service at the church on Friday. Interment of cremains will be held at a later date at Fridhem Lutheran Cemetery, Lengby, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements. Joyce Stokke was born on May 29, 1924 on a farmstead east of Lengby, Minnesota to parents Julius and Emma (Halvorson) Stokke, then moved to her childhood home at the Lengby Junction (which is now the rest area). She had one dear sister, Viola.

Joyce attended Lengby school and graduated from Fosston in 1942. After graduation she moved to St. Paul and worked for the airlines.

She married Jack Robb and they lived in Fargo and Lengby. To this union were born eight children, Linda, Connie, Jeff, Jacki, Lowell, Loren, Bob and Peggy.

In 1965, she married Bill Suckow and his children Fran and Roy joined the family. Bill brought much happiness to the family.

In 1972, Joyce received her LPN diploma. She worked at the Bagley Hospital and Greensview Nursing Home in Bagley and did private duty nursing.

Joyce was a lifelong member of Fridhem Church in Lengby. She loved swimming in Spring Lake, picnics, chocolate, traveling with Bill, camping with the kids, gardening, being in Duluth when Bill was in port, music, cats, dogs and strays, and driving on back roads.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother; totally selfless, full of grace and class.

On Sunday, December 8, 2013 Joyce passed away at Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston, Minnesota at the age of 89 years.

Survivors include her children and her grandchildren, Alyssa, Krys and Will; Kim and Ricky; Justin and Marshall; Melissa and Lisa; Mandy, Tylor, Grace and Mary; Aaron and Heather; and Victoria; many great grandchildren; and nieces, Sondra, Wilma and Elaine.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; sons, Lowell and Loren; grandson, Christopher; and sister, Viola.

Gordon Olai Strand

Gordon Olai Strand, age 78, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, October 28th at Essentia Health Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 2nd at 3:00 PM at Bethel Assembly Church in Fosston with Pastor Jon Marx officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 5:30 PM at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston, and there will also be reviewal for one hour before the funeral at the church on Saturday. Interment will be at Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Fosston, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements.

Gordy was born on June 9, 1935 in Ulen, Minnesota to John and Pauline (Hollevoet) Strand. He grew up 14 miles south of Fosston and attended the Dwayne country school.

He entered the United States Army in February of 1959 and received his honorable discharge in October of 1964. He was married to Marjorie Sleeth on November 25, 1961. They made their home across the road.

Gordy worked many different jobs but mostly as a masonary construction worker and farmer. He had a love for the great outdoors. He had lots of different pets through the years and did a lot of hunting, trapping, and fishing. He also enjoyed going to auctions, restoring Model T's and Model A's or crafting something from old parts. He served on the Heier Township board for 40 years.

Gordy passed away on Monday, October 28, 2013 at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota at the age of 78 years.

Gordy will be remembered by his wife, Margie; son, Gary Strand of Verndale, Minnesota; three daughters, Rita Vacek of Frazee, Minnesota, Sue Francis (Todd) of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and Wanda Gilbertson of Fosston; nine grandchildren, Brent and Cassie Strand, Patrick Vacek, Derek, Ashley, Danielle, and Nathan Francis, Kayla and Kim Gilbertson; one great granddaughter, Sophie Francis; two brothers, John Strand of Cohasset, Minnesota and Marlen Strand of Fosston; two sisters, Verna Ekeberg of Fosston and Ermma Siedschlag of Fargo, North Dakota; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brent; granddaughter, Karyna; three sisters, Opal, Helen, and Bernice; one brother, Palmer; and son-in-law, Chris Vacek.

Elvin "Al" Stenvold

1938-2013

Al Stenvold, age 84 of Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 28, 2013, at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 4, 2013, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, North Dakota with Rev. Troy Troftgruben officiating, after which a light lunch will be served. Visitation will be held for one hour before the funeral at the church on Monday and interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, rural Erskine, Minnesota. Elvin "Al" O. Stenvold was born May 17, 1928 in Fosston, Minnesota. The son of Monrad and Mabel (Wiberg) Stenvold, he was raised in Gonvick, Minnesota, graduating from high school there. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead for two years. It was during this time he met LaVanche "Lovey" Erickson of Drayton, North Dakota. They were married on May 18, 1946, enjoying more than 66 years together.

Al worked for Minnesota Dairy/Cass Clay for over 30 years, retiring in 1992. Many will remember him from his retail years of home delivery. He always said he had such wonderful customers, and saw many of their children progress from newborns into adulthood.

In his retirement, he worked part-time security for the Fargo Civic Center, and in more recent years for the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. He continued, at 84, with the Alerus until his diagnosis in August of last year.

His hobbies were gardening and working in the shop. Skilled with woodworking, that little shop produced many lamps, candle holders, crosses, toy chests, a hope chest, numerous bookshelves, TV cabinets, and much more.

Al also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, travelling, cribbage, crosswords, coffee, visiting, and reading voraciously. However, his true passion would have to be "People". Beloved wife Lovey, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren; relatives, friends, acquaintances- He enjoyed, loved, and truly believed in people.

Al met each new challenge of brain cancer with grace, humor, and dignity. He would say "It could always be worse". He always had a word of thanks for the smallest of services done for him.

On Monday, January 28, 2013 Al passed away peacefully at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota at the age of 84 years.

Al is survived by his wife Lovey of Grand Forks, two daughters: Randie (Dale) Haake of Fargo, North Dakota, Kandace (Merl) Loken of Arvilla, North Dakota; son Scott of Fargo, North Dakota; son-in-law Gary Larsen of San Antonio, TX; nine grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Beverlee Ostenaa of Fosston, Minnesota, Terry Woodford of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, and Addie (Arnold) Sletta of Brea, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Talmadge, sister Marlys Lien, daughter Lindee (Gary) Larsen, grandson Wade Haake, and parental in-laws Norman and Georgia Erickson.

Gilmore Henry Storrusten

Gilmore "Gil" Storrusten, age 80, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday (September 9th) at First Care Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday (September 13th) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Poplar River Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Wednesday (September 12th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston.

Gilmore Henry Storrusten was born on February 21, 1927 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Paul and Olga (Berge) Storrusten. He grew up near Fosston and attended rural school in Rosebud Township.

Gil was united in marriage to Donna Whittmyer on April 23, 1949 at First English Lutheran Church in Fossston. Following their marriage, Gil and Donna raised their family on their farm in Rosebud Township.

In addition to farming and raising beef cattle, Gil held other positions during his life. He was a butter maker at the Fosston Creamery and then was the Chief Boiler Engineer at the Simplot Potato Plant in Fosston. He then owned and operated Gil and Gary's Plumbing and Heating with his son, Gary. Gil spent his remaining working years as Chief Boiler Engineer at Land O' Lakes in Fosston, retiring in 1989. Following retirement, Gil worked as a painter and carpenter in the Fosston area.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston. Gil enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, reading, animals, and the outdoors. He also enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors. Most of all, he loved the time that he spent with his family.

Gil passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2007 at First Care Hospital in Fosston at the age of 80 years, six months and 19 days.

Gil is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Donna of Fosston; two daughters, Susan Skunes and her husband, Dave of Fosston, and Dianne Olander and her husband, Joel of Bloomington, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Kateri and Lee Skunes, Jamie Olander and Nicole (Bryan) Johnson; daughter-in-law, Sharon Storrusten of Fosston; and brother-in-law, Harvey Whittmyer of Tucson, AZ., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Douglas and Gary; infant son, Wayne; infant daughter, Catherine; grandson, Joey Olander; his parents; four brothers, Johnny, Eddie, Kenny, and Orvin; and two sisters, Julia and Ann.

Pallbearers will be Alvin Olson, Pat Hanlon, Mark Burggraf, Sidney Fjerstad, Douglas Fjerstad and Robert Thompson.

Lorraine Jeannette (Klabo) Strand

1926-2007

Lorraine Strand, age 81, of Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Saturday (August 4th) at First Care Hospital in Fosston, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held on Friday (August 10th) at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine with the Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday (August 9th) from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Erskine. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Interment will be at Rodnes Lutheran Cemetery, rural Erskine, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine is in charge of the arrangements.

Lorraine Jeannette Klabo was born on July 13, 1926, on a farm west of Hatton, North Dakota, to parents Carl and Mable (Otterstad) Klabo. She grew up in Hatton, graduated from the high school in 1944, then attended Aaker's Business College in Grand Forks. Following college, she taught at a rural school near Sharon, North Dakota for two years.

On October 24, 1947, she married Gehard Helmer Strand at Crookston, Minnesota. After their marriage, they moved to Erskine where Lorraine was still living. Gehard passed away on October 5, 1992.

Lorraine was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the WELCA and she belonged to the "Jolly 14" Homemaker's Club of Erskine for 54 years.

Lorraine passed away on Saturday, August 4, 2007 at First Care Hospital in Fosston at the age of 81 years.

Survivors include three sons, Jeffrey and his wife, DeNae of Princeton, Minnesota, and Gregory of Crown Point, NM, and Jon and his wife, Kristine of Minnetonka, Minnesota; granddaughters, Amy Strand of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Sara (Eric) Nelson of Zimmerman, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Stanley (Bonnie) Strand of Erskine, Minnesota; step sister-in-law, Dolores (Joe) Chikos of Ontario, CA; step brother-in-law, Elrane (Betty) Kraft of Spokane, WA and many cousins, step cousins and others who where near and dear to Lorraine.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gehard; her parents; one brother, Thelmer Klabo; brothers-in-law, Henning and Reuben; and sisters-in-law, Ordell Bishop (Dale), and Jean Klabo.

Gary Ernest Storrusten

1950-2007

Gary Storrusten, age 57, of Fosston, Minnesota, and former owner of Gary's Clothing in Fosston, passed away on Friday (July 27th) at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday (August 1st) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Poplar River Cemetery, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Tuesday (July 31st) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Gary Ernest Storrusten was born on May 14, 1950, in Fosston, Minnesota, to parents Gil and Donna (Whittmyer) Storrusten. He was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston and graduated from Fosston High School with the class of 1968.

Following high school, Gary attended Bemidji State University. He worked with his father at Gil and Gary's Plumbing and Heating, and Northern Milk Products in Fosston. Gary purchased Bill's Clothing in Fosston in 1995 and, at that time, changed the name of the store to Gary's Clothing. He owned and operated the business until his retirement in July of 2007.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, the Fosston Sportsman's Club, Fosston Lion's Club, Fosston Community Club and the Northwest Buyer's Association.

Gary enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed visiting with his many friends and faithful customers.

Gary passed away on Friday, July 27, 2007 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 57 years.

Survivors include his parents, Gil and Donna Storrusten of Fosston; two sisters, Susan Skunes and her husband, Dave of Fosston, and Dianne Olander and her husband, Joel of Bloomington, Minnesota; uncle, Harvey Whittmyer of Tucson, AZ; nieces and nephews, Kateri and Lee Skunes, Jamie Olander and Nicole Storrusten; one sister-in-law, Sharon Storrusten of Fosston and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas; infant brother, Wayne; infant sister, Catherine; and one nephew, Joey Olander.

Stanley Gordon Strand

1925-2008

Stanley Strand, age 82, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (February 5th) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (February 9th) at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine with the Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, rural Erskine in the spring. Friends may call for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Stanley Gordon Strand was born on March 4, 1925, in Woodside Township, to parents John and Amelia Skiple Strand. Stan grew up in rural Erskine, Minnesota, and attended school in Woodside. He was baptized and confirmed at Rodnes Lutheran Church. In 1950 he began serving in the U.S. Army, including an assignment in Germany, prior to receiving an honorable discharge in 1952.

Stan was united in marriage to Bonnie Anderson on November 14, 1953, in Erskine. They lived in Mentor, Minnesota until 1955, before making their home in Erskine for the past 52 years. He was employed in Mentor and Erskine by Midland Co-op Services for much of his working life; and, after his retirement, helped maintain Polk County parks in the summer months. He served for many years on the Erskine Fire Department; and was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine.

Stanley Strand passed away on February 5, 2008, at his home in Erskine, just one month before his 83rd birthday. Survivors include Bonnie, his wife of 54 years; four daughters: Renee (Ron) Howe, Erskine; Jackie (Jeff) Hendrickson, Dickinson, North Dakota; Jill (Jeff) Sartori, Crofton, Maryland; Becky (Brian) Anderson, Cambridge, Minnesota; and one son, Jerome Strand of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Erin Howe (Brent) Heemstra, Tracy Howe (Tom) Wild, Brittany Hendrickson, Leslie Hendrickson, Michael Sartori, Andrea Sartori, Brady Anderson, Alexis Anderson, and Jeffrey Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers: Henning Strand, Gehard Strand, and Reuben Strand.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Stan's many friends he was privileged to have over the years.

Donna Marjory (Whittmyer) Storrusten

Donna Storrusten, age 79, from Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Thursday, February 4th at First Care Hospital in Fosston.

Donna Marjory Whittmyer was born on August 23, 1930, in Ellendale, North Dakota, to parents Emil and Gena (Halvorson) Whittmyer. After living in Lehr and Grand Forks, North Dakota, her family settled in Fosston, Minnesota in 1947.

Following high school, she was united in marriage to Gil Storrusten on April 23, 1949, at First English Lutheran Church in Fosston. After their marriage, Gil and Donna raised their family on their farm in Rosebud Township. Most recently, she lived at Evergreen Apartments in Fosston.

In addition to being a homemaker, Donna worked at Simplot Potato Plant and was a Certified Nursing Assistant at Johnson's Rest Home in Fosston.

Donna was a member of Hope Lutheran Church of Fosston. She enjoyed her pets, gardening, reading, traveling, and sharing her baked goodies over coffee. Most of all, she loved the time she spent with her family.

Donna passed away on February 4, 2010, at First Care Hospital in Fosston at the age of 79 years, 5 months, and 12 days.

Donna is survived by two daughters, Susan Skunes and her husband, David of Fosston, and Dianne Olander and her husband, Joel of Bloomington, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Kateri and Lee Skunes, Jamie Olander and Nicole (Bryan) Johnson; daughter-in-law, Sharon Storrusten of Fosston; brother, Harvey Whittmyer of Tuscon, AZ; and great-grandchildren, Fiona and Kloe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gil; sons, Gary and Douglas; infant daughter, Catherine; infant son, Wayne; grandson, Joey Olander; and her parents.

Luella Ingeborg (Roland) Strande

Luella Strande, age 86, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (September 3rd) at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday (September 8th) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Sunday (September 7th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. Luella Ingeborg Roland was born on December 18, 1921, in Alamo, North Dakota to Ingvald and Thora (Aspebakken) Roland. She grew up in rural Fosston and graduated from Fosston High School. She worked at the Fosston Creamery, secretary at Hope Lutheran Church, the B & B Café in McIntosh and the Pine to Prairie Cafe in Fosston.

She was united in marriage to Philip Strande on February 19, 1944. They lived in Fosston where they raised their four children. They owned and operated Northside Grocery for many years. Philip passed away in 1986.

She had a life time membership at the Embassy Community Center. Her interests were knitting, Yatzee, playing cards, going to the casino and she enjoyed listening to polka music. Her family was the most important. She enjoyed all the visitors and phone calls.

She passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji at the age of 86 years.

She is survived by her children, Donna Taflin of Minneapolis, Norma Quam of Fosston, Larry (Marilyn) Strande of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Scott (Teri) Strande of Minot, North Dakota; AFS student, Karin (Gerhard) Howe of Germany; grandchildren, Don (Susan) Taflin, Carla (Jason) Montgomery, Jody Rock, Wendy (Mike) Powers, Andrea (Randy) Oelschlager, Travis (Emily) Quam, Tim (Sara) Strande, Karisa (Nick) Doyle, Neal, Tyler, Cassondra, Stephane and Spencer Strande, Elke and Edzart Howe and Michelle (Mike) Curfman; great grandchildren, Erika Swanson, Xavier Powers, Hunter and Sydney Oelschlager, Faith, Tucker, Kyra, and Myla Quam, Andrew Strande, Annika Doyle, and Caleb and Emily Curfman; and many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Clifford Strande of Fosston; and two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Strande of Red Wing, Minnesota, and Gilma Dietel of Hoquiam, WA.

She took in those who needed a warm place to be. She was a "mom" and "gram" to many. She had a special spot in her heart for her niece Marlyss and family and Janet Reierson.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Alf and Lars; and one sister, Helene.

Ruth Strom, age 101, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (May 29th) at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday (June 1st) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Erskine with the Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, rural Erskine. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine.

Ruth Strom was born on a farm near McIntosh, Minnesota. on December 1, 1905, to parents Tobias Martin Strom and Olga Marie Tranby Strom. She was the middle child of five daughters born to the Stroms from 1902 to 1909.

On May 29, 2007, Ruth passed away at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine, at the age of 101, five months and twenty-eight days.

Ruth, who attended school only until the eighth grade, left her parents' rural home when she was fifteen years old, moving in with a family south of McIntosh, where she took care of three children, ages two to four, until they entered college. The McManus family and Ruth remained close friends throughout her life.

Ruth's working years were devoted primarily to caring for others. After leaving Minnesota, Ruth worked with children at a mission in Oakland, California; after which she was employed at a children's home in Chicago, Illinois, with some 150 young people. Later, for twenty years, Ruth was employed by a nursing home in Minneapolis; and, briefly, at a hospital in the Twin Cities area.

Ruth also worked in Duluth; and in Mobridge, South Dakota, with Rev. Phil and Judy (Skogerboe) Hyland, who served as missionaries for many years. She ended her working career in Fosston, where she was an employee of a nursing home for five years.

Ruth enjoyed reading (more than fifty books a year, even after her 101st birthday), and was especially accomplished in crocheting, knitting, and growing flowers. A longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine, her Christian faith was always very important to Ruth throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents (her mother in 1918, and her father in 1938); and her four sisters—Inga Raaen, Emma Howe, Agnes Vann, and Olga Olson.

Survivors include four nieces—Evangeline (Vannie) Howe Espeseth, Dolores Howe Santelli, Marge Nelson Berger, Mardelle Olson Rygh—and one nephew, Ron Howe. Her surviving cousins are Velma Tranby Ward, Arnold Tranby, Melvin Tranby, and Valborg Tranby Flagstad.

Pallbearers will be Rev. Peter Satren, Rev. Berton Hushagen, Jim Espeseth, Ron Howe, Keith Stuhaug, and Jim Berger.

Manferd Albin Svedahl

1917-2008

Manferd Svedahl, age 91, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (October 14th) at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (October 18th) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service on Friday (October 17th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. Manferd Albin Svedahl was born on July 22, 1917 in Ashby, Minnesota to parents Ludvig and Anna (Sumstad) Svedahl. He was baptized in Ashby and moved with his family to the Fosston, Minnesota area in 1922. Manferd attended the following rural schools; Moen and Steinbrenner, and was confirmed at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston. Following his schooling, Manferd worked as a farmhand in the area.

He was united in marriage to Lorraine Bakken on May 30, 1942 and then became a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston. Manferd started work for Land O' Lakes Milk Drying Plant in 1946, continuing until his retirement in 1979 after 33 years of service. Manferd entered the First Care Nursing Home in Fosston in May of 2006.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. He liked fishing, deer hunting, gardening, and playing dice games. He especially enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with his siblings and grandchildren.

Manferd passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at First Care Nursing Home at the age of 91 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Lorraine of Fosston; two daughters, Janice (Lowell) Haugen of McIntosh and Sandra (Stan) Linsenmeyer of Marshalltown, IA; six grandchildren, Heather Linsenmeyer, Jeremy (Bonnie) Linsenmeyer, Kirsten (Ben) Barker, Laurie (Dale) Stern, Lynnette Renaud, and Melissa (Eric) Murphy; 12 great grandchildren, Drew Hubbard, Josh Hubbard, Blake Linsenmeyer, Casey Linsenmeyer, Marcus Barker, Lincoln Barker, Alex Stern, Emily Stern, Brandy Renaud, Amanda Murphy, Abby Murphy, and Amaya Murphy. Several sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Scott Haugen; and nine siblings, Einar, Albert, Leonard, Clara, Dagney, Marvin, Alf, Clifford, and Alfred.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jack Rinkenberger, Norris Halland, Wally Olson, and his Land O' Lakes fellow employees.

Galen Swanson, age 64, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (November 17th) at Minnesota Veteran's Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

Galen Lee Swanson was born on April 2, 1947 in Fosston, Minnesota, to Stanley and Dora (Carlson) Swanson. Galen attended Fosston High School. Following high school, Galen entered the United States Army in January of 1968 and received his honorable discharge in November of 1977.

Galen started work for Boeing in 1978 in Washington which he did for 12 years. Galen was married and with the marriage two children, Tavin and Vernon Swanson were born. Galen enjoyed playing bingo, playing cards and most of all visiting friends and family with his scooter.

Galen passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the Minnesota Veteran's Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota at the age of 64 years, seven months and 15 days.

Survivors include his mother, Dora Myhrum of Fosston; daughter, Tavin Swanson; son, Vernon Swanson; his nieces and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Swanson; step father, Arvil Myhrum; and his sister, Sharon Kappedal.

Derva Sveningson, age 81, of Mentor, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, November 26th at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 30th at 11:00 AM at Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor with Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Faith Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Rosehill Cemetery, rural Mentor and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements.

Derva Belle Leora Schehr was born March 12, 1928 in Terrebonne (Red Lake County), Minnesota to parents Melvin and Esther (Schultz) Schehr. She attended Dougdale School through the third grade, and then Mentor School where she graduated in 1945. She was baptized and confirmed in the Mentor Lutheran Church.

Derva was united in marriage to Carl Sveningson on March 12, 1947 on her birthday at Crookston, Minnesota and they resided in the Mentor, Minnesota area throughout their lives.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Circle in Mentor and was active as treasurer of the Rosehill Cemetery Board. She was also widely regarded as the Community Historian. Derva spent her entire adult life caring for her family, friends, and any new acquaintances she encountered.

Derva passed away on Thanksgiving Day— November 26, 2009 at the age of 81 years at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks after a brief illness.

Survivors include son, Steven (Kristie) Sveningson of Mentor; daughters, Cynthia Thode Handyside of Crookston, Minnesota, Sandra (JC) Kirkland of Mentor, Peggy (David) Brodeur of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Penny Sveningson of Crookston and Lori (David) Cyr of Grafton, North Dakota; grandchildren, James, John and Patrick Thode, Jackie Salvhus, Mindy Kirkland, Christopher and Casey Sveningson, John and Scott Brodeur, Stephanie Blair, Christina Broadwell, and Allison and Jacob Cyr; 16 great grandchildren; sister, Arlene Murphy of Montrose, MI; sister-in-law, Clara (Wilson) Galland of Mentor; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents; two brothers, Alerie Schehr and Harold Schultz; and infant sister, Darlene.

Ralph "Red" Suby

Ralph "Red" Suby, age 85, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday (June 25th) at his home. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (July 9th) at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. John Dalen officiating. Interment will be in Kingo Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Tangen-Walstrom American Legion Post #114 of Fosston and arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston. Ralph Suby was born on June 28, 1925, to Christ and Idelia (Lenes) Suby in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He was baptized at Sharon Lutheran Church. Red attended school in Grand Forks until moving with his sister Dolores to Fosston in 1936. His mother had passed away and they came to live with their aunt Mollie (Lenes) Kerley and her family. Red was confirmed at Kingo Lutheran Church and graduated from Fosston High School.

In June of 1943 Red joined the United States Navy and served in the Navy Seabees until his discharge in the fall of 1945. After his discharge he returned to Fosston and his job at the Liberty Theatre until it was sold. For many years Red was Secretary for the East Polk County Fair Association. He also did bookkeeping work, and worked noon recess as an attendant at the Elementary School. Red went to work for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier in the city of Fosston, retiring in 1988.

Red was a life member of the American Legion and a Past Commander. He was a member of Kingo Lutheran Church. After his retirement he became an active volunteer. Helping with mailings for the Firemen, checking and tallying grocery receipts for the Embassy Center, and taking their meal reservations for the senior meals.

Red is survived by special cousins, B.J. (Hi) Kerley of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Margaret (Kerley) Kindem of Visalia, CA; four nieces and nephews, Sandra Bowling and Cynthia Taeza of Visalia, CA, and Richard Brecke and Robert Claypool of San Diego, CA; his aunt Caroline Lenes of Hibbing, Minnesota and four cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dolores Claypool; grandparents; special aunt, Mollie Kerley; cousin, Donald Kerley; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Donna (Hoel) Sveningson

Donna Sveningson, age 77, of Mentor, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday (December 27th) at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Donna Mae Hoel was born on March 8, 1931 in Erskine, Minnesota to parents Adolph and Myrtle (Anderson) Hoel. She lived in Erskine and later moved to the Mentor area. Donna was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor by Rev. Skogerboe and graduated from Mentor Public School.

She was united in marriage to Daniel Sveningson on July 12, 1953 at Faith Lutheran Church. Reverend Skogerboe performed the ceremony. After their marriage, they lived in the Mentor area. Donna has always been actively involved in church work as a long time member of Faith Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Broderheim Cemetery Board and Treasurer of Faith Lutheran Cemetery for several years.

Donna enjoyed the time that she spent with friends at the Senior Center in Mentor. She was a very giving person and would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. She especially enjoyed the time that she could spend with her family.

Donna passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota with her family at her side at the age of 77 years, nine months and 19 days.

Survivors include two sons, Mark of West Frankfort, IL, and Orval (Teddy) of Mentor; two daughters, Mary (John) Tvedt of Mentor, and Joyce (Dean) Cooley of Santa Rosa, CA; six grandchildren, Jonathan Tvedt, Danielle and Allison Cooley, Amanda Nelson, Andrea Vold, and Henry Vold; and great grandchildren; and one brother, Fred (Ramona) Hoel of Redwood Valley, CA. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel; daughter, Kathy; and her parents.

Active Pallbearers will be Reggie Galland, Bruce Galland, Steve Sveningson, Dennis Hoel, James Hoel, Gordy Erickson, and Gordon Hoel.

Aldora Verna (Otness) Sultvedt

1924-2007

Aldora Verna Otness was born on January 22nd, 1924, to Denis and Anna (Olson) Otness in Lengby, Minnesota. She grew up on the family farm, attended the Hoge Country School and graduated from Fosston High School with the class of 1942. After graduation, Aldora baby-sat for the Viken family, then moved to Minneapolis to work at Sears. In 1945, she married Soren Sultvedt who was also from the Lengby area. They took over the Sultvedt family farm and raised a family together.

Aldora was a wonderful homemaker. She enjoyed all kinds of crafts and sewing, flowers, cooking, baking and gardening. She especially enjoyed spending time visiting with her family and friends. Aldora was actively involved with the St Paul's Ladies Aid and Columbia Homemakers Club. We will miss the patience she had with all of us, her quick wit, as well as her kindness to all.

For the past three years, Aldora had lived at McIntosh Manor nursing home. Her family would like to thank everyone there for the good care she received. She passed away there on January 29th, 2007 at the age of 83 years and 7 days from the complications of Parkinsons disease.

She is survived by her four children: Jerry and his wife Betty of Crystal, Minnesota, Donald and his wife Joyce of Fosston, Judy of Maple Grove, Minnesota and Russell of Fosston; five grandchildren: Lonnie Perreault, Julie Sultvedt, Susan Engelhardt, Mike Sultvedt and Jennifer Schwede, Sister-in-law Elva Otness, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Delbert and Leo, an infant sister Etta Laverne and sister-in-law Devona Otness.

Hilda Orvilla (Finseth) Swenson

1924-2008

Hilda Swenson, age 83, of rural Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (June 25th) as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident north of Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (July 1st) at Vernes Lutheran Church, rural McIntosh with the Rev. Joseph Abrahamson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Monday (June 30th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Hilda Orvilla Finseth was born on September 16, 1924 in Trail, Minnesota to parents Julian and Elizabeth (Christianson) Finseth. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed that faith on October 17, 1937. She attended the Lindsay School in Hill River Township and graduated from McIntosh High School in 1942.

Hilda was united in marriage to Lloyd Swenson on September 9, 1944, in Gonvick, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they lived on Lloyd's family's home farm north of Fosston. Lloyd passed away as a young man on November 5, 1957. Following his death, Hilda continued to live and raise her family on the farm.

Hilda worked at the Johnson Rest Home in Fosston, the Fosston Municipal Hospital and Nursing Home (later known as First Care) and spent her remaining years working for First Care Medical Services. Hilda was named Employee of the Year in 1989 and retired from First Care in 1995 after 32 years of dedicated service.

She was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Trail where she was active in Ladies Aide. She enjoyed embroidering, reading and spending time outdoors walking and gardening. She always had the coffee pot on for visiting family and friends. She will be dearly missed.

Hilda passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 from injuries she received in an automobile accident north of Fosston at the age of 83 years.

Survivors include three children, Larry (Mary) Swenson of Bemidji, Minnesota, Stephany Skala of Fosston, and Dean Swenson of Fosston; six grandchildren, David Swenson of Beverly Hills, MI, Aaron Swenson of Bemidji, Minnesota, Daniel Swenson of Bemidji, Minnesota, Jeffrey Hopke of Pine Lake, Minnesota, Alexina Hruby of Fargo, North Dakota, and Cassidy Swenson of Oklee, Minnesota; one brother, Darrell Finseth of Fosston; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; grandson, Benjamin; brothers, Clarence and Laurie; and one sister, Elvie Wiberg.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Leslie Finseth, Rudy Finseth, Sidney Finseth, Randy Finseth, Arnold Syverson, Ordell Langseth, Wayne Bakke, and Howard Flateland.

Geneva Emma (Poppe) Swenson

Geneva Swenson, age 83, of Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Sunday, March 20th at Midway Care Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 24th at 2:00 PM at Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston with Rev. Dean Bell officiating. Geneva Emma (Poppe) Swenson, the daughter of Louis and Ella (Franck) Poppe, who was born January 15, 1928 in Martin County, Minnesota. She received her education in rural school District #52 in Elm Creek Township, rural Trimont. Geneva graduated from Tri-Mont in 1947, later took a beauty course in Fairmont, Minnesota, worked in Red Wing and Truman and then worked as a beauty operator at a shop in Westbrook, Minnesota.

On June 25, 1949 she was united in marriage to Omer N. Swenson of Westbrook. After their marriage they traveled to multiple areas as Omer pursued his Fish and Wildlife Conservation career. After retirement they settled in Bagley, Minnesota.

Geneva was a member of the First English Lutheran Church of Fosston, Minnesota. She enjoyed knitting, antiques, flea markets and auctions, along with her love of collecting chickens and roosters.

On Sunday, March 20, 2011 Geneva Swenson passed away at Midway Care Center in Fosston at the age of 83 years.

She is survived by her husband Omer Swenson of Bagley, Minnesota, her sister Martha (Poppe) Meyer of Kiester, Minnesota, many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Alfred, August and Marvin Poppe, one sister, Evelyn (Poppe) Wink, and other relatives.

Karsten Robert Syverson

1942-2012

Karsten Syverson, age 69, of McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (April 12th) at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (April 17th) at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh with the Rev. Ryan Rasmussen officiating. Interment will be in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, McIntosh. Karsten Robert Syverson was born on August 8, 1942 in Hill River Township to parents Theodore and Linda (Christianson) Syverson. He was baptized and confirmed at Vernes Lutheran Church in rural McIntosh, Minnesota. He attended the Lindsey country school through 6th grade and then attended McIntosh High School, graduating in 1960.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, November 15, 1960 and was honorably discharged April 20, 1964. Karsten was married to Corrine "Corky" Fischer on June 13th, 1964.

He worked in the grain elevator business for 20 years at various locations, and was employed as the Maintenance Supervisor for the City of McIntosh from 1983 until his retirement.

Karsten enjoyed hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling and mowing lawn. The highlight of his life was spending time with his grandchildren, teaching them about life and sharing stories with them.

On Thursday, April 12, 2012 Karsten passed away at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota at the age of 69 years.

He is survived by his wife, Corky of McIntosh; son, Clay Syverson and his wife, Teresa and their children Megan, Carmen and Luke of McIntosh; daughter, Karen Wenge and her husband, Jason and their children Preston and Makien of Minneapolis, Minnesota; siblings, Ruby Heideman of McIntosh, Ardell (Lloyd) Opdahl of Oklee, Minnesota, Arnold (Conne) Syverson of Trail, Minnesota, Entrip (Sharon) Syverson of Lakeville, Minnesota, Bernice (Jerome) Voxland of McIntosh, Gloria (Mark) Morque of Lebanon, MO, and Viola (Richard) Georgeson of Hillsboro, North Dakota; sister-in-law, Delores Syverson of Fosston, Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Rueben Brekke and Morris Hendrickson, both of McIntosh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Floyd Syverson; sisters, Verna Syverson, Lorraine Brekke and Elenora Hendrickson; and infant twin siblings Morris and Doris.

Louisa Berthina (Jensen) Swenson

1916-2008

Born: September 16, 1916
Died: February 07, 2008

Louisa Swenson, age 91, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (February 7th) at First Care Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (February 12th) at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby with the Rev. Shawn Stafford officiating. Interment will be in Cross Lake Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fosston, in the spring. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Louisa Berthina Jensen was born on September 16, 1916, the daughter of Hartvig and Gjertrud (Morkve) Jensen in Platt, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in Platt. Louisa met and married Hans M. Swenson in 1934 and moved to the Swenson farm in Columbia Township. They had one son, Edwin (Ed).

Louisa retired from the Technical College, working in food services at Crookston.

Louisa is survived by one son, Ed (Pat) Swenson of rural Fosston; granddaughter, Linda Swenson of Trippler Army Medical Center in Hawaii; sister, Margaret Wilcox of McMinnville, OR; brothers, John (Kitty) Jensen of Eugene, OR, Paul Jensen of Las Vegas, NV, Chris Jensen of Yakima, WA, and Lenord (Irene) Jensen of McMinnville, OR. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in August of 1988; her parents; foster parents; five brothers and two sisters.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Spring Lake V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #2759 of Lengby, Minnesota

Pallbearers will be Marvel Heide, Danny Solberg, Jeff Solberg, Arnie Lomen, Luverne Lomen, and Rudy Larson.

Floyd Alvin Syverson

1923-2009

Floyd Syverson, age 86, of rural Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday (December 6th) at First Care Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (December 11th) at Vernes Lutheran Church, rural McIntosh with the Pastor Ryan Rasmussen officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the McIntosh American Legion Post #6891. Floyd Alvin Syverson was born on January 25, 1923 in Hill River Township, rural McIntosh, Minnesota to parents Theodore and Linda (Christianson) Syverson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Vernes Lutheran Church of rural McIntosh. Floyd grew up in Hill River Township and attended rural school at the Lindsay School through the eighth grade. He then went to school at Gonvick High School in Gonvick, Minnesota from 1936 until 1938 at which time he transferred to McIntosh High School where he graduated in 1940. Following high school, Floyd went to the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and spent from 1941 until 1942 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Floyd entered the United States Marine Corps on November 28, 1944, serving in the Pacific and Japan following the surrender in Hiroshima. He received his honorable discharge on August 20, 1946.

Upon his return to the States, Floyd continued his education at Finley Engineering College in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating in 1950. He returned to Minnesota in April of 1952, and was employed as the resident engineer for C.J. Hastad in Halstad, Minnesota. During these years, Floyd lived in Mahnomen and in Erskine, Minnesota.

Floyd was united in marriage to Delores Fealy on June 25, 1954 at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine. After their marriage, Floyd and Delores lived in Erskine for a year before moving to Alexandria, Virginia in February of 1955. It was there that Floyd accepted a position with the United States Department of Agriculture, Rural Electrification Administration, a division that administered loans to locally owned telephone companies. With his position, Floyd and Delores lived in Virginia until June of 1955, Wolf Point, Montana from July 1955 until September 1958 and Grand Island, Nebraska from September of 1958 until his retirement in 1983. Upon his retirement, Floyd was recognized for 30 years of outstanding service. They returned to the area in 1985 and have since resided in rural Fosston.

Floyd was an active member of Vernes Lutheran Church and a long time member of Gideon's International.

Floyd passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at First Care Hospital in Fosston at the age of 86 years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Delores of Fosston; one daughter, Linda Syverson Guild (Mark) of Bethesda, MD; two sons, Paul (Lori) Syverson of Fort Collins, CO, and Lee Syverson of Washington, D.C.; four granddaughters, Nichole and Kelsey Syverson and Katie and Christa Guild.

Also surviving are nine siblings, Ruby Heideman of McIntosh, Ardell (Lloyd) Opdahl of Oklee, Minnesota, Eleanora (Morris) Hendrickson of McIntosh, Arnold (Conne) Syverson of Trail, Minnesota, Entrip (Sharon) Syverson of Lakeville, Minnesota, Bernice (Jerome) Voxland of McIntosh, Gloria (Mark) Morque of Lebanon, MO, Karsten (Corky) Syverson of McIntosh, and Viola (Richard) Georgeson of Hillsboro, North Dakota; brother-in-law, Rueben Brekke of McIntosh; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Verna Syverson and Lorraine Brekke; infant twins Morris and Doris; and brother-in-law, Curtis Heideman.

Omer Norman Swenson

1922-2012

Died: April 30, 2012

Omer Swenson, age 89, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Monday (April 30th) at Cornerstone Residence in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (May 4th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston with the Rev. Dean Bell officiating. Interment will be in Cross Lake Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home. Omer Norman Swenson was born on July 22, 1922 in Columbia Township, Minnesota to parents Oscar and Anna (Myrvold) Swenson. He grew up in Columbia Township and graduated from Fosston High School. He then attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis where he graduated in 1948.

Omer was united in marriage to Geneva Emma Poppe on June 25, 1949. Omer worked as a teacher until 1962 when he began work for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His career took him to several locations including Valentine, Nebraska, Long Lake Refuge in North Dakota, Crab Orchard, Illinois, Devils Lake, North Dakota, and was manager of the Tamarac Refuge near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota at the time of his retirement.

Following his retirement in 1983, they moved back to his home area near Fosston. During his retirement years, Omer worked in insurance, serving on the Thrivent board, and was active in his church and community. He and Neva also spent time traveling to and selling at flea markets. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Fosston.

Omer passed away on Monday, April 30, 2012 at Cornerstone Residence in Fosston at the age of 89 years, nine months and eight days.

Survivors include many nieces, nephews and cousins; and sister-in-law, Martha Meyer of Kiester, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife on March 20, 2011; and his parents.

Rupert Leslie Syverson

1935-2008

Rupert Syverson, age 72, of rural McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (May 22nd) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday (May 28th) at Vernes Lutheran Church, rural McIntosh with the Rev. Aage Carlsen and Rev. Gordon Syverson officiating. Interment will be in Vernes Lutheran Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Tuesday (May 27th) at the McIntosh Community Center. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Rupert Leslie Syverson was born on July 8, 1935 in the family log home located in Hill River Township of rural McIntosh, Minnesota. His parents were Rudolph and Clara (Martinson) Syverson. He was baptized and later confirmed his faith in Jesus in Vernes Lutheran Church. Rupert received his first eight years of education in Lindsay Country School.

He graduated from McIntosh High School in 1953. He attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota for one year; Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota for one year and graduated from Bemidji State University with a BA degree in the Social Sciences and Education. He also served his country in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960.

Throughout his life Rupert was involved in a variety of vocational endeavors—which included teaching school in Wyoming, Colorado, Montana and North Dakota. He served as a Polk County Commissioner for twelve years, this included being on the Polk County Senior Citizen's Board and the Inter-County Community Council. In addition, Rupert farmed as a sideline throughout his lifetime. He was an active member of Gideon's International.

Being a person with many interests he traveled to Norway and other parts of Europe, the Far East, Mexico and countries in South America. Some of these trips were church related. Rupert was a conservationist and a lover of nature which led him to be able to identify many birds and their songs, and plants and flowers. He held in his heart a special place for his dogs and cats. Most of all, Rupert had a deep and abiding Christian faith which was the determining force in his life.

He was a wonderful member of the family. Even though he had no children of his own, nieces, nephews and children everywhere were a special part of his life. Rupert has left a great influence in the world and because of his life our world is a better place for all.

He departed this life at the age of 72 years in his own home surrounded by loving family members after a long struggle with congestive heart failure.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Alvira Knutson and Clara Quam; three brothers, Francis, Edwin and Alan. Also preceding him in death were infant brother, Walter; and infant sisters, Doris and Elaine; three brothers-in-law, Archie Knutson, Laurie Finseth and Roger Vind; and one sister-in-law, Christine Syverson.

He is survived by four sisters, Ardith Syverson of McIntosh, Anola Finseth of McIntosh, Mary (Richard) Loing of Reynolds, North Dakota, and Faith (Bruce) Hanson of McIntosh; two brothers, Norris of McIntosh, Gordon of Fosston; brother-in law, Roy Quam of McIntosh; sisters-in-law, Mavis Syverson of McIntosh and Eleanor Syverson of Barnum, Minnesota. Also surviving are 37 nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews; many cousins and a host of friends.

God bless the memory of Rupert in the lives of all who knew him, loved him and worked with him throughout his sojourn in this world.

Melanie Ann (Granly) Uebe

1962-2014

Melanie Uebe, age 52, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Saturday (August 2nd). Melanie Ann was born to Vernon and Charolett Granly on April 4, 1962 at Cando Memorial Hospital in Cando, North Dakota.

She attended school in Cando, North Dakota, and Grand Forks, North Dakota, and completed her education at Fosston High School in Fosston, Minnesota.

Melanie always had a fun-loving spirit, and found ways to make everyone chuckle. She had an amazing ability with crafts and she loved to fish! Melanie loved to sing and for years was a member of the Granly family singers.

Melanie married Rudolph Uebe "Rudy" in Bemidji, Minnesota, and they celebrated 25 years last fall. She loved her husband, family, and pets with all her heart.

She has joined her mother, Charolett Granly, who preceded her in death on November 27, 2009.

Melanie is survived by her husband, Rudolph Uebe; her father, Vernon Granly; and several other family members.

Richard Wagner

Floyd Milford Uggen

1922-2006

Born: March 10, 1922
Died: October 18, 2006

Floyd Uggen, 84, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (October 18th) at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday (October 23rd) at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh, Minnesota, with the Rev. Dr. Gerald White and Lee Hoaas officiating. Interment will be in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, McIntosh. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, serving McIntosh.

Floyd Milford Uggen was born on March 10, 1922 in Erskine, Minnesota to parents Fritz and Margaret (Johnson) Uggen. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh. Floyd farmed his entire life in the McIntosh and Erskine areas.

He served on the country school board until the school consolidated in the McIntosh District. He also helped organize and build the McIntosh Potato Company Board and was a member of East Polk County Soil Conservation District for 30 years.

Floyd played basketball in high school and he loved basketball and most sports. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and nature.

Floyd passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine at the age of 84 years.

He is survived by many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Christ; and one sister, Alice Uggen.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Kenny Hansen, Harold Thompson, Bud Stenmoen, Armond Sannes, Lee Hartel, Wayne Gustafson, Hilmer Carlson and Clifton Burslie.

Pallbearers will be Philip Quam, Mike Hansen, Charles Svalen, Bud Kiecker, Albert Mandt, Roy Ostenaa, and Gary Frisk.

Organist was Diane Boucher, soloist was Charles Svalen and a duet was sung by Sherry Hoaas and Vivian Hanson.

Brett Alexander Walker

1992-2011

Brett Walker, age 19, of Erskine, MN, son of Jeff and Lauri Walker and brother of Jacob and Whitney, passed away on Monday (October 24th) near Erskine. Brett Alexander (Bear) Walker was born February 9, 1992 at Riverview Hospital in Crookston. He graduated from Win-E-Mac High School in 2010 and was employed at Fuel-N-Things in Erskine.

He will forever be remembered as the boy with the enormous heart filled with genuine love and respect for those around him. His smile was forever present and he was always there to offer words of support, acts of kindness and generosity. Brett never spoke poorly about anyone, and always put others before himself. He brought such joy and happiness who were lucky enough to share a piece of his life including his many friends, classmates, and of course his family.

Brett's passion of hunting and fishing were shared with his loving father and little brother. Many jokes, long talks and crazy adventures were shared out on their hunting excursions. Brett also enjoyed all kinds of sports, especially watching the Vikings, Twins, and the WWE. You would often find Brett outside with his dogs or playing catch with his brother Jake.

Brett will be deeply missed by us all. He may have left this world too quickly, but he will forever remain in our hearts.

Come celebrate the life of our blessed son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. Richard Uebe

1917-2007

Richard Uebe, age 90, of McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (November 29th) at McIntosh Manor Nursing Home in McIntosh. There will be no services. The Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston assisted the family with the arrangements.

Richard is survived by one son, Richard Jr. of California; two brothers, Pierre (Carole) Uebe of Crookston, MN and Rudolph Uebe of Ada, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Joanna in 2007; and other siblings.

Verna Norma Walstad

1920-2011

Born: June 30, 1920
Died: March 31, 2011

Verna Walstad, age 90, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, March 31st at Essentia Health Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 5th at 2:00 PM at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Visitation will be on Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston, and there will also be reviewal for one hour before the funeral at the church. Verna Norma Walstad was born on June 30, 1920 at Spring Grove, MN, to parents Steinar and Caren (Oseth) Walstad. She grew up in Spring Grove where she was baptized in the Lutheran faith. In 1933, she moved from Spring Grove to the McIntosh, MN area, and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. Later Verna moved to Fosston, MN where she has since resided. Verna was a member of Hope Lutheran Church.

During her life she was employed at the Anoka Ammunition Plant, Arctic Cat in Thief River Falls, and the Fosston Potato Plant.

Verna was a compassionate and caring person. Although she had no children of her own, she was like a mother and grandmother to all her family members. She always put others before herself, but her Lord and Savior was always first in her life.

Verna loved gardening, and she loved to cook, read, play games, and she loved animals.

She was able to be in her apartment doing all her own work until the time of her death. After a short illness, she passed away at Essentia Health Hospital in Fosston on March 31, 2011 at the age of 90 years.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Melvin (Palma) Simonson of Fosston; one sister-in-law, Wilma Lucken of McIntosh; one niece, Kathryn (Daniel) Carlson of Fosston; two nephews, Dennis (Margot) Simonson of Fosston and Dean (Janell) Walstad of Oklee, MN; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; and four sisters.

Clarice Marie Hoppe Ulland

1920-2008

Born: April 25, 1920
Died: August 27, 2008

Clarice Ulland, age 88, of Mentor, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 under hospice care at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 1, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Rodnes Lutheran Church in rural Erskine with the Rev. Peter Satren and the Rev. Dale Finstrom officiating. Visitation will be held at Rodnes Church on Sunday, August 31, 2008 between 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M., with a Family Service to follow. Interment will be at Rodnes Lutheran Church Cemetery. Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine is in charge of the arrangements.

Clarice Marie Hoppe was born on April 25, 1920 in Skandia Township, Barnes County, North Dakota, to parents John and Mable (Sommerfeldt) Hoppe. Clarice first met the love of her life, Orville Ulland, in school when they were but six years old. They were married on April 5, 1941 in Crookston, Minnesota and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in 2008.

Clarice and Orville farmed together and ran a meat market in Buxton, N.D. after their marriage. They moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where Clarice worked at J.C. Penney until they purchased a farm and moved to Mentor in 1960. They started Ulland's Resort on the north end of Maple Lake in 1964. Clarice was also a part-time postal clerk at the Mentor Post Office and sold Avon and Amway products. She became a resident of Pioneer Memorial Care Center in August of 2007.

She was an active member of Rodnes Lutheran Church and WELCA. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, painting and many crafts. She treasured all of the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

On Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Clarice Ulland, at the age of 88, passed away at Pioneer Memorial Care Center under the care of hospice, the staff of Pioneer, and her family.

Left to celebrate her life and to hold her in their hearts are her husband, Orville, a daughter, Sandra (Keith) Fontaine of Mentor, a son, Gary (Rena) Ulland of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Kip (Sheila) Fontaine of Bagley, MN, Kelly (Brian) Wavra of East Grand Forks, MN, Karl (Laurie) Fontaine of Cave Creek, AZ, Kraig (Amy) Fontaine of Bagley, Kirk Fontaine of Red Lake Falls, MN, Dr. Denver (Priscilla) Ulland of Duluth, MN, and Dr. Erik (Melanie) Ulland of Madison, WI; ten great-grandchildren, Karli, Keaton, and Kael Fontaine, Kloe Wavra, Kristian Fontaine, Kassandra and Kamden Fontaine, Dayton and Dalton Ulland, and Stellan Ulland; two brothers, Melvin Finstrom of Buxton, ND and Alton (JoAnn) Finstrom of Grand Forks; one sister, Ruth Cohen of Grand Prairie, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

Francis L. Walls

Died: November 22, 2006

Francis Walls, 65, of rural McIntosh, MN, passed away on Wednesday (November 22nd) at her home. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (December 2nd) at the Embassy Community Center in Fosston with the Rev. Bob Kelly officiating. Frances was born Feb. 8th. 1941 at home in Honey Grove, Texas. She was a happy, caring child and as an adult and she showed these same qualities to all she knew.

She married the love of her life Raymond Leon Walls on July 9th 1960 and is survived by him. Francis is also survived by her six children: James (Wanda) Walls of Mahnoman, MN, Debra (Steve) Rouch of Reno, NV, Steven Walls of Sparks, NV, Raymond (Dianne) Walls of Carson City, NV, Linda (Blaine) Manse of NV, and Dawn (Raymond) Vasend of Brooks, MN.; she has 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister Claudine (Hank) Walton of Clearbrook, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

She resided in Carson City, Nevada, prior to moving to Mc Intosh, Minnesota, in 1995, to be closer to her aging other and beloved sister. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Claud and Mamie Smith, sister Mildred, brother Dan and niece Viola.

All who knew her loved her sense of humor, kindness and open ear. Her door, her heart and her arms were always open to all who wanted or needed her with no conditions. We all will miss her but knows she is in a far better place.

Frances Louise (Smith) Walls joined our Heavenly Father, Wednesday, November 22 2006.

Orville Ulland

Orville Ulland, age 88, of Mentor, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2008 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Rodnes Lutheran Church in rural Erskine with the Rev. Peter Satren and the Rev. Dale Finstrom officiating. Visitation will be held at Rodnes on Friday, October 10, 2008 between 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M., with a Family Service to follow. Interment will be at Rodnes Lutheran Church Cemetery. Orville Ulland was born on December 25, 1919 in Norway Township, Traill County, North Dakota to parents Christian and Syverina (Brusveen) Ulland. Orville first met the love of his life, Clarice Hoppe, in school when they were but six years old. He attended primary school in rural Hillsboro, North Dakota and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1938. Orville and Clarice were married on April 5, 1941 in Crookston, Minnesota and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in 2008.

Orville and Clarice farmed together and ran a meat market in Buxton, North Dakota, after their marriage. They moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where Orville worked at Dow Supply until they purchased a farm and moved to Mentor in 1960. They started Ulland's Resort on the north end of Maple Lake in 1964. Besides farming up until his retirement, Orville was a master welder and worked on the Iron Range and missile sites in North Dakota. He became a resident of Pioneer Memorial Care Center in August of 2007.

He was an active member of Rodnes Lutheran Church, serving as Church President from 1978 to 1985, and 1999 to 2001, and Vice President from 1988 to 1999, and 2002 to 2003, and he served as Deacon for six three-year terms. He was President of Rodnes Cemetery Association from May 1993 to July 2004. He was also active in township politics, serving on the Grove Park Township Board for 27 years. He enjoyed all the time he was able to spend with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

On Sunday, October 5, 2008 Orville Ulland, at the age of 88, passed away at Pioneer Memorial Care Center under the care of the staff of Pioneer and his family.

Left to celebrate his life and his reunification with his wife, Clarice, who died just on August 27, 2008, are a daughter, Sandra (Keith) Fontaine of Mentor, a son, Gary (Rena) Ulland of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Kip (Sheila) Fontaine of Bagley, MN, Kelly (Brian) Wavra of East Grand Forks, MN, Karl (Laurie) Fontaine of Cave Creek, AZ, Kraig (Amy) Fontaine of Bagley, Kirk Fontaine of Red Lake Falls, MN, Dr. Denver (Priscilla) Ulland of Duluth, MN, and Dr. Erik (Melanie) Ulland of Madison, WI; ten great-grandchildren, Karli, Keaton, and Kael Fontaine, Kloe Wavra, Kristian Fontaine, Kassandra and Kamden Fontaine, Dayton and Dalton Ulland, and Stellan Ulland; one brother, Daniel (Rose) Ulland of San Diego, CA; one sister, Mildred (Floyd) Erickson of West Fargo, ND; two sisters-in-law, Bessie (Lynn) Ulland of Mayville, ND and Madelyn (Hartman) Ulland of Fargo; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clarice; parents; brothers, Hartvig, Lynn, Harold, and Hartman; sisters, Mildred C. Ulland, Gunda Almlie, Clara Thortvedt, Alice Tate, Hazel Gordon, and Vivian Johnson; and grandson, Kris Fontaine.

Walt Wandschneider, age 86, of Fosston and formerly of Lengby, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday (March 1st) at First Care Medical Services in Fosston.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday (March 9th) at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby with the Rev. Shawn Stafford officiating. Interment will be in Immanuel Cemetery, rural Lengby. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Sunday (March 8th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Military rites will be provided by the Spring Lake V.F.W. Post #2759 of Lengby and arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston. Messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com. Memorials are preferred to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby.

Walter William Wandschneider was born on July 26, 1922 in Rabey, Minnesota to parents William and Mathilda (Steindorf) Wandschneider. He moved to Lengby, Minnesota with his family in 1931 and graduated from Fosston High School in 1940. Following high school, he worked at Auto-Lite Company in Fosstoria, Ohio where he repaired and maintained factory machines and equipment.

Walt entered the United States Army Air Corps in November of 1942, serving as a military police officer in the Southern European Theatre (North Africa and Italy) during World War II. He received his honorable discharge in October of 1945.

After his discharge, Walt made his home in Grand Rapids, Minnesota where he worked at National T grocery store until 1951. At that time, he returned to Lengby where he owned and operated Walt's Grocery. He was united in marriage to Barbara Anna Seeber on Aril 12, 1958 in Grand Rapids and together they resided in Lengby. He sold the grocery store in 1961. He then operated the Laundromat in Fosston from 1961 until 1975 and was also an agent for Mutual Service Insurance Company from 1962 until 1967.

In 1967, he was appointed Postmaster in Lengby and, in 1974, was appointed the same position in Deer River, Minnesota. He retired as Deer River Postmaster in 1985. While living in Deer River, Walt was very active in the community. He served as Mayor of Deer River from 1986 until 1994 and it was during his time as mayor that the Christmas tree for the White House was selected from the community. He was also active in the Deer River Lions Club for many years and was a member of the Cenex Co-op Board.

His wife, Barbara, passed away on July 31, 2002. Following her passing, Walt moved back to Lengby and then to the Cornerstone Assisted Living Apartments in February of 2008.

Walt was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby, often serving as delegate at the synod convention. He also taught Friday school, was head usher, and always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting.

Walt passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at First Care Medical Services in Fosston at the age of 86 years, seven months and three days.

Survivors include his son, David Wandschneider and his wife, Barbara of Lengby; two grandchildren, Jeff and Cole; four siblings, Jeanette Fenske of Fosston, Martin (Joyce) Wandschneider of Phoenix, AZ, Mata Kilborn of Fosston, and Phronie Olson of Lengby. Nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; brother, Herb; and his parents.

Pallbearers at the service will be Luverne Lomen, Kenny Lomen, Arne Lomen, Marvel Heide, Don Klinke and Gordy Herrgard.
