Helen Eleanor Sovick was born April 11, 1921 to Hans and Hilda (Solberg) Sovick in Columbia Township, Polk County, east of Fosston Minnesota, the youngest of eight children. She grew up on the family farm where she was born, and attended Maple Hill Country School. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church.

As a young adult, she cooked in family homes, did waitress work in several cafes, enjoyed playing the piano, was talented in baking and decorating cakes for special occasions, and loved to grow flowers.

After a physical assault caused severe head trauma, Helen's ability to think, feel and accurately perceive reality deteriorated. Helen's mother provided care at her home until she passed away in 1967. Helen then received treatment at a State Hospital before returning to Fosston. She became a resident for many years in the Johnson Rest Home, and later, First Care Nursing Home (also known as Essentia Health Living Center) both in Fosston. The family are very grateful for all the fine care she had in both nursing homes, the many workers there also becoming her family.

Bernice Pauline (Higdem) Smith

1912-2009

Born: November 13, 1912
Died: November 20, 2009

Bernice Smith, age 97, of McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Friday (November 20th) at First Care Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (November 24th) at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh with the Rev. Ryan Rasmussen officiating. Interment will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.

Bernice Pauline Higdem was born on November 13, 1912 to Andrew J. and Emma G. Knutson Higdem at the family homestead in Sletten Township. Bernice attended country school through eighth grade and then attended McIntosh High School, graduating as salutatorian of the Class of 1931. After high school graduation, Bernice completed Normal Teacher's Training (a one-year teacher certification program). On receipt of her teacher's certificate, she returned to Sletten Township where she taught school for two years at her former country school.

In 1934, Bernice followed her sister, Agnes, to Minneapolis where she sought employment, first as a "domestic" (maid); and, later, evolving into the role of head cook for several families in the vicinity of Pillsbury Avenue. While serving as cook at one of those family mansions in Minneapolis, Bernice met and married Jerry Wertish on September 14, 1944. After they were married, Jerry and Bernice moved back to McIntosh where they owned and operated the Felix Café for approximately 15 years. To their union, three children were born: James Michael Wertish (11/18/45); John Edward Wertish (9/6/46); and Judith (Judy) Ann Wertish (12/2/48). Jerry and Bernice were divorced in 1956. In 1964, Bernice moved to Fosston after marrying Charles L. Smith. Although Charlie died in 1973, Bernice remained in Fosston where she re-entered the business world by purchasing a restaurant and card room (Mel's Place) that was owned by her brother, Melvin Higdem. She renamed the establishment "My Place", turned it into a family restaurant, and was sole proprietor of that very successful business enterprise for five years before selling it to Lowell Jevning. Bernice remained in Jevning's employ as chief cook for many years before finally retiring and moving back to McIntosh in 1991. Upon her return to McIntosh, Bernice managed the senior meal program for four years.

Bernice was deeply patriotic. She helped organize the VFW Post 6891 Ladies Auxiliary in McIntosh in 1949 and served many terms as President of the organization. She loved attending rallies in her earlier years, served on many committees, marched in parades, helped cook and serve dinners to the community, and completed annual reports for the organization up until her death. The Auxiliary was truly her passion. Bernice loved to laugh and she had a great capacity for looking at life on the bright side, never letting life's circumstances get her down.

After her "retirement" from the restaurant world in 1991, Bernice continued baking cookies and frying doughnuts for several of her most special "customers". She spoiled her family by making delicious lefse and mouth-watering deep-fried fattimand, heavily sprinkled with powdered sugar; and, she lovingly packed boxes of home-baked Christmas goodies that she mailed to her three granddaughters every Christmas Season from 1980-2007.

Bernice Higdem Wertish Smith was the last surviving member of the Andrew J. and Emma G. Higdem family; preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Melvin, Bennie, Joseph, Arnold, and Reuben; and, by her sisters Agnes Sandbeck Brown and Ella Glidden (Bill). Bernice is survived by her three children, Jim, John (Junell), and Judy; two step-daughters, Kenlyn Berg (Donovan) and Sharon Rowland (Marlo); four grandchildren (Danelle Papenfuss Bemis, Paula Knutson Bemis, Jennifer Bohnart, and Matt Olsen), and three great grandchildren (Miles Papenfuss, Anna Bemis, and Summer Knutson). Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Bernice entered McIntosh Manor Nursing Home in August 2009 and she passed away at First Care Hospital in Fosston on November 20, 2009, at the age of 97 years and 7 days young.

Edna (Norvold) Sorgaard

1911-2014

Born: May 15, 1911
Died: March 18, 2014

Edna Sorgaard, age 102, of Lengby, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (March 18th) at Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday (March 24th) at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Lengby with the Rev. Aage Carlsen officiating. Interment will be in Kingo Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. The Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.co

Edna was born on May 15, 1911, near Oslo, Norway. Her father Gustav Norvold, already working in America, sent money back to his family in Norway for tickets to join him. In 1912, Edna, along with her mother, Pauline, and her older brother, Reinhart, sailed to America.

They first lived for a time in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, where Gustav had work and later moved to Edinburgh, North Dakota, where Edna started school at Adams School. She would later attend school in Twin Valley, Minnesota.

In 1928 when Edna was seventeen, Gustav bought a farm near Lengby, Minnesota. One summer day in 1928 Edna and a friend were walking home from Spring Lake on a road east of Lengby and a young man in his 1926 Chevy coupe stopped and gave them a ride home. Two years later, on June 18, 1930, Edna married that young man, Clarence Sorgaard. Together they raised their family and worked their farm on the edge of Lengby. They lived on that farm for over 50 years.

In addition to the hard work of being a farmer's wife through the Depression and beyond, Edna gave a lot of time to her church. She was an active member of the LCW and the Sewing Circle. She cooked, baked, quilted, sewed, and knitted for various church activities and causes. Her knitted pot holders, scarves, and afghans often brought spirited bidding wars at Fridhem Lutheran Church's Fall Festivals. Some of those battles became family traditions. Edna smiled with pride over the funds that her work brought to the church. And if that wasn't enough to keep her busy, later she cooked at the summer Boy Scout camp at White Earth and then went to work in the kitchen at the Fosston Hospital getting on the road before six o'clock on cold winter mornings.

She moved to the Linda Marie apartments in Fosston in 1992 after the family farm was sold and Clarence was in the nursing home. She made daily visits to be with him until he passed away on September 7, 1994. She moved to an assisted living apartment at Prairie Pines in 2005 and celebrated her 100th birthday there with her family and friends.

While at Prairie Pines she continued to knit, read, and remain active in their activities. People often brought her yarn with special requests. She made afghans for each of her grandchildren that were presents to them at their high school graduations. She especially loved poetry. Reading it and writing it. She kept her sharp mind and quick wit to the end, firing off one liners to her laughing visitors. This comment was often made, "She is a special lady." She always thought of others before herself.

Edna passed away on March 18, 2014, leaving behind a thankful family and worlds of memories for them and for the people who knew her.

Surviving are her three children, Clemence (Sylvia) of Fargo, North Dakota, Roger of Wyoming, Minnesota, and Joyce (Phil) Sieburg of Richfield, Minnesota. Also, ten grandchildren, John (Xiao Tong) Sorgaard, Eric (Tana) Sorgaard, Mark (Lara) Sorgaard, Rodney (Lauren) Sorgaard, Richard (Debbie) Sorgaard, Craig Sorgaard (Keri), Cindy (Tim) Griffin, Daniel Sieburg (Margo), David (Jocelyn) Sieburg, and JoLynn (Jacques) Baumer. Edna also had 20 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. Other survivors included many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence, brother Reinhart, sister Esther, daughter-in-law Cathy, and granddaughter Suzanne.

Ragna Oline Qually was born on November 14, 1912 to Olav and Ragnhild Bratteland Kvaale (Qually) in Johnson Township Gully, Minnesota, on the family farm. Ragna's parents were Norwegian immigrants who had settled north of Gully. She attended grade school in the log, one room Poplar Isle School as well as in District 241, Strande School. Later, she went to Gully High School. She then attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis for one year. During her time in Minneapolis, Ragna worked as a housekeeper, a nurse's aide at the Swedish Hospital, and also for a publishing company called Northwestern Press. She attributed her knowledge of modern housekeeping skills to her experience as a housekeeper in Minneapolis. In order to help her mother raise several grandchildren, Ragna returned home to the family farm. She always wished she could have stayed in Minneapolis and continued her education. However, this move turned out to be better than she had thought as this is where she was to meet and marry the love of her life.

Ragna was united in marriage to Harold Melvin Steile, a young man also from north of Gully, on October 20, 1937 at Lund Church in Gully. Harold and Ragna raised 4 children; Ronald, Dianne, Darlene, and Richard. Ragna always grew a large and well tended garden along with helping Harold on the farm. She had nightly devotions with her children, which they still remember fondly. Ragna served many years in the WELCA of Lund, taught Sunday school, served in the PTA, belonged to the birthday club, and was a wonderful hostess to one and all. She loved to cook and entertain in her home and made it look so easy. In 1978 Ragna and Harold started building their retirement home across the road on the Bennie Anderson Farm. They had only lived there 3 months before Harold passed away in July 1979. She lived several places after this and finally settled in Fosston where she spent many years. In Fosston she attended Calvary Free Lutheran Church, was active in the Embassy, bible studies, and Singles Christian Fellowship Club. Ragna enjoyed reading, writing poetry, and kept a journal since 1946. She was an avid writer leaving precious written memories for all to share. Later on, she became talented in rosemaling and left many pieces for her family to cherish for years to come.

Ragna went home to be with her Lord surrounded by her family on Monday, September 15, 2008 at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston under care of hospice at the age of 95 years.

Left to celebrate her life and hold her memory close to their hearts are her children: Ronald (Sonja) Steile of Trail, Minnesota, Dianne (Arden) Buchholz of Halstad, Mi, Darlene (Dan) Alsup of Plymouth, Mi, and Rick (Sandy) Steile of Silver Lake, Mi; her grandchildren, Denise (Scott) Hoeft, Bo (Arden) Fowler, Aaron (Melinda) Buchholz, Jill (Jeff) Kyong-McClain, Cara (Doug) Lawrence, Huy (Dung) Le, Tuan (Thuy) Le, Hong-Van (David) Wamsley, John Alsup, Amy Alsup, Richard Alsup, Sarah Alsup, Michelle (Jeremy) Goudge, Kristopher Steile, Tiana (Adam) Wick, Nicholle (Josh) Winfrey; her great grandchildren, Jessica (Wade) Robinson, Branden Hoeft, Jared Hoeft, Chad Hoeft, Ryan Hoeft, Derrick Finseth, Akiko Kyong-McClain, Owen Kyong-McClain, Cole Buchholz, Noah Buchholz, Lyla Lawrence, Vu Le, Vinh Le, Vi Le, Jennifer Le, Jonathan Le, Ashley Alsup, Dylan Alsup, Leyton Wick, Alexander Wick, and Alexis Winfrey; and her great-great granddaughter Flynn Janel Robinson; and one sister, Vivian Nyland of Imlay City, MI.

Ragna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold, five brothers, four sisters, granddaughter Janel Steile, grandson Viet Ta, great granddaughter Kristen Hoeft, and numerous nieces and nephews.

We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the hospice volunteers and the staff at Firstcare Nursing Home for showing such care and compassion over the last few months. It was greatly appreciated.

Bryan Stordahl

1978-2013

Born: September 30, 1978
Died: September 21, 2013

Bryan Stordahl, age 34, of Dallas, TX, died peacefully at his family home in McIntosh on Saturday (September 21st) after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday (September 26th) at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, McIntosh. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with an 8:00 p.m. prayer service on Wednesday (September 25th) and for one hour prior to the service on Thursday. All visitation will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, serving McIntosh and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.

Bryan was born on September 30, 1978, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, to Jim and Roxanne (Dufault) Stordahl. From the time Bryan was young it was apparent he had passion for life. Bryan and his friends, with his brother Bryce in tow, would always get into mischief. When someone would ask Bryan if they should be doing something, he would say "yep" and continue on. This passion for life drove Bryan to live life fully and without regret. He was a man who lived to experience the world and what it had to offer; never letting his cancer or pain get in his way and always moving forward, toward his dreams.

Bryan graduated from Win-E-Mac High School in 1997 and moved to Minneapolis where he realized his passion for helping people. He became a paramedic in 2002 and graduated from the Texas Firefighting Academy in 2004. He continued his education at Texas A&M and graduated in 2009. Bryan was proud of his education and was a steadfast Texas A&M "Aggie" fan, attending dozens of games and wearing his Alma Mater ring with pride.

In 2008, Bryan was preparing for a marathon when he started experiencing debilitating headaches. After going to the doctor, he was diagnosed with Hemangiopercytoma. Throughout his 5 year battle with this rare cancer, his faith in God strengthened as he knew that he was in the Army of Christ. He never asked why, he did not get angry and he lived by his motto to "Never give up." Between treatments, surgeries and broken bones, he continued living life LARGE regardless of what it threw at him.

Bryan inspired people wherever he went. He had countless friends and had an matchless talent for meeting people; he was constantly on the move. Whether he was golfing, playing hockey, working out, going to numerous Stars, Vikings, Aggie & Twins games, hanging out with his brother, Bryce or off-roading in his FJ and traveling, he always lived life to the fullest. When people would ask Bryan how he could cope with the pain and the treatments he would say, "I think about Jesus and what He endured on His way to the cross and I think, "this is not so bad."

Bryan is survived by his loving parents, Jim & Roxanne Stordahl of McIntosh, Minnesota, his brother Bryce Stordahl (Andrea Stordahl) of Hawley, Minnesota; grandparents Lawrence & Madeline Dufault of Gentilly, Minnesota, and his "second parents" Ann Stordahl (Kelly Austin) of Dallas, TX and Dave Stordahl (Wanda Stordahl) of McIntosh, Minnesota.

Bryan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Orville and Marion Stordahl, step grandmother Maria Stordahl, sister Aaron, cousin Jenna Dufault and Aunt Karen Dufault.
