Wilbur Edwin Nielson

1919-2014

Wilbur Nielson, age 94 of Payson, AZ and formerly from Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, October 1st at his daughter's home in Payson. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 8th at 11:00 AM at Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor, Minnesota with Rev. Michael Sletto officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the funeral at the church on Wednesday, and interment will be at Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Mentor. Wilbur Edwin Nielson was born November 11, 1919 to Jens Peter and Inez (Voss) Nielson in Poplar River Township, Red Lake County, Minnesota. He was the only surviving son in his parents' marriage. Inez (Voss) Nielson passed away when Wilbur was just 3 years old. His father remarried Bessie Pearl Crosby a few years later. They had 3 surviving children.

Wilbur graduated from Erskine High School and went on to study at Northwestern Bible School in Minneapolis for one year. He then was drafted into the Army Air Force in 1941 serving in the west pacific, including Iwo Jima and Saipan. He was discharged in 1945.

Wilbur married Evelyn Lee April 2, 1946. They had three daughters: Marilee Steele (Tom), Sharilyn Walters (Mark) and Janine Nielson. His legacy continued with 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The 15th great-grandchild is due December 2014 and will be Great-Grandpa Nielson's namesake.

After discharge from military service, Wilbur worked at various jobs including farming and road construction before being appointed as a rural mail carrier which he continued 6 days a week for 26 years, retiring in 1986. Following retirement, Wilbur enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He and Evelyn were active members of their congregation, Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor, serving as a lay minister, Bible Study leader, Sunday School teacher, and chairperson of various committee's over the years. Wilbur served as a lay minister to many other area churches, as well. A dream was fulfilled for Wilbur when he moved to Arizona in 2013. While there, he enjoyed the cowboy culture, the climate, new friends and family. His favorite past time was going for car rides through the AZ mountains and canyons. He loved the AZ countryside!

On Wednesday, October 1, 2014 Wilbur passed away at his daughter's home in Payson, AZ at the age of 94 years.

Wilbur is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, his parents Jens Peter and Inez Nielson, infant sister, Elsie Nielson, step-mother Bessie Pearl Nielson, infant brother, Dwayne Nielson, and sister Bess (Nielson) Olson. Wilbur is survived by his 3 daughter's, 10 grand children, 14 great-children, brother, Lee Nielson, sister, Nellie Mack, and several nieces and nephews.

Magdalen Theresa "Maggie" Nohava

1926-2010

Died: April 21, 2010

Magdalen "Maggie" Nohava, age 83, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (April 21st) at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday (April 24th) at St. Marys Catholic Church in Fosston with Father Dave Super presiding. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service with a rosary and prayer service to be held at 1:00 p.m., all on Saturday at the church. Magdalen Theresa Nohava was born on July 19, 1926 in Rice County, rural Lonsdale, Minnesota to parents Frank and Mary (Malecha) Nohava. She grew up near Lonsdale where she attended Immaculate Conception School for 11 years. She then went to the Good Counsel Academy in Mankato, Minnesota, graduating in 1944. Following school, she returned to Lonsdale and worked at Hlavac Drug Store, Red Owl, and at Dr. Lehrer's office. She then was employed as a housekeeper for Father Charles Jirik at parish houses in towns where he served.

Maggie retired in 1988 and moved to Fosston, Minnesota. She lived in the Linda Marie Apartments and Cornerstone Apartments in Fosston. She was currently a resident of First Care Nursing Home. When she first lived in Fosston, Maggie used her sewing talents, providing seamstress services to the community and at Paula Jo's clothing store. She was also involved with many activities at the Embassy Community Center and made many friends there.

She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church where she taught Friday school and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed needle work, sewing, cross stitching, and was known as a good cook and baker. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Maggie was a beloved aunt to her brothers and sisters children. She loved spoiling them with lovely gifts.

Maggie passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston at the age of 83 years.

She is survived by four sisters, Sister Yvonne Nohava and Sister Rosemary Nohava, both of Mankato, Minnesota, Julia (Roy) Washa of Montgomery, Minnesota, and Theresa Zitzow of Fosston; sister-in-law, Clara Nohava of Lonsdale, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and five sisters; and five brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

Honorary Pallbearers: Staff members of Cornerstone Assisted Living, First Care Nursing Home and friends at the Embassy Community Center.

Pallbearers: Erwin Zitzow, James Washa, Joe Washa, Roy Washa, Rick Litzinger, and Kreston Lane.

Elmer John "Doc" Nord

1924-2012

Elmer Nord, age 87, from Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Tuesday, June 5th at Essentia Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 9th at 10:30 AM at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, June 8th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston, and there will also be reviewal for one hour before the funeral at the church. Elmer John "Doc" Nord was born on November 8, 1924 in Fosston, Minnesota to John and Selma (Lund) Nord. He was baptized into the Christian faith. Elmer grew up in Fosston and graduated from Fosston High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Force after high school and attained the rank of corporal. He graduated from North Dakota Agricultural College (NDSU) in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. In 1952, he joined Donald Mark as a pharmacist at Mark's Corner Drug. The partnership continued until 1968, when Elmer bought the store and it became Nord's Corner Drug. In 1987, Elmer sold the store to John and Julie Nord and continued to work at their side until his retirement in April of 2011. He also served as Director of Pharmacy at Fosston Municipal Hospital for over 24 years.

On June 23, 1957, Elmer was united in marriage to Frances "Frannie" Burt in Lengby, Minnesota. They were married 53 years and together raised three children and hosted two foreign exchange students. He was active in many organizations including the Rotary Club, the American Legion Post, Fosston City Council, AFS, Sons of Norway and the Fosston School Board. In 1974, he was awarded the Fosston Service Award. He was very active at Hope Lutheran Church holding many positions including congregational president and also sang in the Senior Choir for many years. He, along with Frannie, was past "Honorary Person of the Year" for Fosston's Heritage Days. Elmer was an accomplished woodworker and also enjoyed golfing, reading, Sudoku puzzles and spending time with family and friends.

Elmer is survived by one daughter, Barb (Jon) Bergquist of Bemidji, Minnesota; two sons, John (Julie) Nord of Fosston and Paul (Monica) Nord of Vergas, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Brady Bergquist, Jared Bergquist, Amanda (Carl) Hanson, Patrick Nord, Charles Nord (fiance Kaley Ratz) and James Nord; one sister, Lydia Zappa of Fridley, Minnesota; two brothers, Glen Nord of Maple Grove, Minnesota and Dennis (Jacki) Nord of LaSalle, IL; two sisters-in-law, Vivian Nord of Fosston and Betty Devine of Cambridge, Minnesota; as well as many nieces, and nephews. Also surviving are AFS host sons, Marcos Hecke of Brazil and Obedia Shembe of South Africa.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; his dear wife Frannie; two brothers, Les and Art Nord; two sisters, Berdella Gustafson and Ruth Nord.

Elmer passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Essentia Health in Fosston at the age of 87 years.

Frances Loretta (Burt) "Frannie" Nord

1930-2011

Frances "Frannie" Nord, age 80, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, June 28th at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 2nd at 10:00 AM at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston, and there will also be reviewal for one hour before the funeral at the church. Frances Loretta Burt was born on July 17, 1930 in Glyndon, Minnesota, to parents Richard William and Nona (Hilliard) Burt. She was baptized on July 31, 1933 in Glyndon, Minnesota by Pastor C. B. Runsvold. Frannie grew up in Lengby, Minnesota and graduated from Fosston High School in 1948. She was employed as a proofreader at The 13 Towns Newspaper for many years.

On June 23, 1957 Frannie was united in marriage to Elmer Nord. She worked as the bookkeeper for Nord's Corner Drug and later at Nord's Pharmacy and Gifts in Fosston, Minnesota until May of 2011.

Frannie was a very active and involved person. She was a member of the McDowell Music Club, a past "Honorary Person Of The Year" for Heritage Days, Co-Chair of the 1988 Fosston All-School Reunion, and Community Club "Person Of The Year" in 1988. She served as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, was on the hospital board, and along with Elmer served as an AFS Host Family. Frannie was also an active member of Hope Lutheran Church where she served as a Trustee, Friday School and Sunday School teacher, and W.E.L.C.A. Board member. She enjoyed baking, reading (especially newspapers), coffee parties, and volunteering a lot of time in the church kitchen. She also cherished attending her grandchildren's events and spending time with family and friends.

Frannie passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 surrounded by her loving family, at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota at the age of 80 years.

She is survived by her husband Elmer of Fosston; one daughter, Barb (Jon) Bergquist of Bemidji, Minnesota; two sons, John (Julie) Nord of Fosston and Paul (Monica) Nord of Vergas, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Brady Bergquist, Jared Bergquist, Amanda (Carl) Hanson, Patrick Nord, Charles Nord, and James Nord; two sisters, Shirley Hood of Bagley, Minnesota and Betty Devine of Cambridge, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Vivian Nord of Fosston and Lydia Zappa of Fridley, Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Dennis (Jacki) Nord of LaSalle, IL and Glen Nord of Maple Grove, Minnesota; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also surviving are AFS Host sons, Marcos Hecke of Brazil and Obedia Shembe of South Africa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Robert Burt.

Vivian Adeline (Watne) Norgaard

1921-2010

Vivian Norgaard, age 89, of Gully, Minnesota, passed away on Monday (June 21st) at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (June 26th) at Lund Lutheran Church in Gully with Pastor Michael Sletto and Pastor Bob Kelly officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Friday (June 25th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Vivian Adeline Watne was born on April 11, 1921 in Gully, Minnesota to parents Ole and Laura (Olson) Watne. She grew up in Gully and attended school in Trail. Vi worked on the family farm before moving to Duluth where she worked as a waitress.

Vi was united in marriage to Raymond Milton Norgaard on October 3, 1945 in Cloquet, Minnesota. After their marriage, they settled on the Norgaard family farm south of Gully. In addition to helping Ray on the farm, Vi was also employed at the Rouland and Gully Co-op stores, at a munitions plant in the Twin Cities, Arctic Cat in Thief River Falls, and at Windsor Lefse in Gonvick. At the time of Ray's passing on March 22, 2003, they had been married for over 57 years.

She was a member of Lund Lutheran Church and its ladies aid. She was also a member of the Gonvick American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Eastern Star in Fosston.

Vi enjoyed gardening, canning pickles, mowing the lawn, shopping, knitting and crocheting (she made many quilts and afghans for her family), and spending time with her grandchildren. Vi also enjoyed her visits with family and friends at the cabin on Pine Lake. Along with her daughter Robin and her sister Carrie, Vi visited her ancestral home in Norway where she found the birthplace of her parents.

Vi loved the community of Gully and spent her entire life there. Gully was a place of comfort and joy to her and she enjoyed socializing with family and friends.

She passed away on Monday, June 21, 2010 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks at the age of 89 years.

Survivors include her son, Vance (Jean) of Northfield, Minnesota; daughter, Robin Kelleher of Burnsville, Minnesota; former daughter-in-law, Linda Barcus of Bemidji, Minnesota; former son-in-law, Tom Kelleher of Prior Lake, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Eric (Jana) Norgaard of Bemidji, Chris (Jenny) Norgaard of Tioga, North Dakota, Celia Norgaard of Hettinger, North Dakota (fiance, Matt), and Charles Norgaard of Shakopee, Minnesota; great grandchildren, Matthew, Adeline, Gunnar, and Jack; step grandchildren, Talla Antonczak of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and Tammy Smith of Lakeville, Minnesota; three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Watne of Goodridge, Minnesota, Pearl Watne of Gully, and Donna Watne of Gonvick. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; parents; two sisters, Gunda Syrtveit, and Carrie Christianson; five brothers, Lloyd, Lewie, Olaf, Lawrence "Bud", and Floyd; infant sister, Leloris and two other infant siblings.

Ruth Mildred Nord

Ruth Nord, age 78, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Friday (December 3rd) at First Care Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday (December 8th) at the Fosston Baptist Church with Pastor Skip Hansen officiating. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Tuesday (December 7th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. Ruth Mildred Nord was born on June 28, 1932, in Fosston, Minnesota, to parents John and Selma (Lund) Nord. She grew up in Fosston and graduated from Fosston High School in 1950. Ruth was employed by the Fosston Hospital and Dr. Stolpestad before moving to Minneapolis where she worked at the Bloomington Clinic. After her retirement in 1994, she returned to Fosston.

Ruth was a dedicated volunteer in her church and in the community. While in Minneapolis she was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and was member of the Fosston Baptist Church where she was also active for many years. She was also a member of the Board of Directors of the D.A.C. in Fosston, treasurer of the East Polk County Cancer Society and secretary of the Heritage Center in Fosston.

Ruth passed away peacefully on Friday, December 3, 2010 at First Care Living Center in Fosston at the age of 78 years, five months and five days.

Ruth is survived by one sister, Lydia Zappa of Fridley, Minnesota; and three brothers, Elmer (Frances) of Fosston, Glen (Janet) of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Dennis (Jacki) of LaSalle, IL.; sister-in-law, Vivian Nord of Fosston; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister Berdella; and brothers, Lester and Arthur.

Glenn Morris Nordstrom

1926-2013

Glenn Nordstrom, age 86 from Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday (January 23rd) at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (January 29th) at Saron Lutheran Church, rural Erskine with the Rev. Alan Arneson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery at a later date. Military honors will be conducted by the Bailey-Throne American Legion Post #596 of Erskine and the National Guard Honors Team. Glenn Morris Nordstrom was born on October 5, 1926 in Oslo, Minnesota to parents Daniel and Hilda (Larson) Nordstrom. He moved with his family to Erskine as a young child, attended country school and graduated from Erskine High School in 1944.

Following graduation, Glenn entered the United States Navy. He served on the USS Maryland as a radioman, receiving his honorable discharge on June 24, 1946. Glenn then went to work for Soo Line Railroad as a telegrapher until his retirement in 1983. Upon his retirement, Glenn returned to his roots making his home on the Nordstrom farm north of Erskine.

Glenn loved gardening though he was known as a "planter" and not so much a "weeder." He was a member of Saron Lutheran Church where he was blessed with many good friends.

Glenn passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota at the age of 86 years.

He is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins; and sister-in-law, Ella Nordstrom of Erskine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Donald, Emery, and Gordon.

Ordell Peter Nyhus

1936-2011

Born: February 14, 1936
Died: March 30, 2011

Ordell Nyhus, age 75, of Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, March 30th at Essentia Health Long Term Care in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 4th at 11:00 AM at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. John Dalen officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the funeral at the church, and interment will be at Landsverk Cemetery, rural Fosston at a later date. Ordell Peter Nyhus was born on February 14, 1936 in Fosston, the son of Peter and Hannah (Landsverk) Nyhus. He was baptized, confirmed, and a lifelong member at Kingo Lutheran Church. He attended Pine Hill School in Columbia Township and graduated from Fosston High School in 1954. After high school, Ordell worked at Haugstul's Oil until 1962.

Ordell was united in marriage to Florence Preisler on June 29, 1955. He began working at the Fosston Ag Service in 1962, where he was the manager from 1965 to 2010. Ordell was a substitute school bus driver for over 20 years and also worked a number of other part time jobs. Ordell genuinely enjoyed his jobs, and loved working with the public.

When Ordell was not hard at work he enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards and shaking dice, and enjoying Florence's good cooking (especially lefse). Ordell truly loved spending time with Florence, driving the countryside. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting with his son, Steve, and working in his yard.

Ordell passed away on Wednesday, March 30 at the age of 75, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ordell is survived by his wife, Florence; his children, Larry, Steve (and Cindy), Randy, and Patti; his grandchildren, Cassie (and Alex), Mandee, and Halle; one sister, Lorraine Olien; sister-in-law Dory Pavek (and Ed); and three nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Hannah, brother-in-law Bob Olien, and niece Debbie Olien.

Grace Alvina (Melander) Nyland

1914-2009

Grace Nyland, age 95, from Clearbrook, Minnesota passed away on Tuesday, November 17th at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 20th at 1:00 PM at Lund Lutheran Church in Gully, Minnesota with Pastor Michael Sletto officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the funeral at the church, and interment will be at Salem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Gully. The Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements.

Grace Alvina Melander was born on July 29, 1914, to parents Gustav and Caroline (Gomsrud) Melander at Freeborn, Minnesota. She moved with her parents to a farm north of Gonvick, Minnesota and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. She attended grade school at Berner, Minnesota and one year at the AC in Crookston.

Grace was married to Albert Nyland on November 19, 1932 at Gonvick and they resided on their farm south of Gully, Minnesota for 55 years at which time they retired and moved to Clearbrook, Minnesota in 1988; two sons were born to them, Ronald and Wayne. Albert passed away in 1992.

She was active in both the Salem Church Ladies Aid and Lund Lutheran Church Ladies Aid of Gully where she held many offices. Grace was organist at both Salem and Lund Churches for many years and was substitute organist for Sunday services at Lund and Sand Valley Church of Trail. She worked as a sales clerk in various places; the Co-op Store at Gully, the Fairway Store at Fosston, Minnesota and Montgomery Ward in St. Paul. She cooked at the school in Silver Bay, Minnesota for two years, worked at the sewing factory at the O.M.C. in Trail and Oklee, Minnesota. She also worked at Fingerhut at Gaylord, Minnesota, was a substitute school bus driver for her husband and worked for 12 years at Winsor Products Lefse' of rural Gonvick.

Grace enjoyed making many quilts for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and she also quilted with the ladies at church. She enjoyed putting scrapbooks together and loved and enjoyed visiting with her children, grandchildren and families and they always looked forward to her good cooking and baking. She always enjoyed having company, loved music, playing the piano and dancing, raising flowers and "loved all her good friends who were so kind to her". In her later years she played the piano as a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Center until her eyesight prevented her from doing so. She has been a resident there for the past two years.

On Tuesday, November 17, 2009 Grace passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook at the age of 95 years.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald (Janice) of Gully and Wayne (Roselyn) of Clearbrook; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; one sister, June Neal of Des Moines, WA; and one brother, Gene Melander of Clearbrook.

James Overmoe, age 87, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Friday (September 5th) at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday (September 11th) at Riverside Evangelical Free Church in Mayville, North Dakota with Pastor Hollis Graves and Pastor Scott Sheets officiating. Interment will be in Aal Cemetery, rural Hillsboro, North Dakota. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Wednesday (September 10th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. James Orlin Overmoe was born on March 1, 1921 at Hillsboro, North Dakota, the second son of Joseph and Helen (Pederson) Overmoe. He grew up on the family farm, attending country elementary school and graduating from Hillsboro High School in 1938. James was inducted into the United States Army on December 10, 1942. He served with the 102nd Infantry Division in the European theatre of World War II. Upon his honorable discharge on February 20, 1946, James returned to Hillsboro where he farmed with his father and brothers Earl, Leonard, and Lloyd.

On April 10, 1948 James was united in marriage to Marian Lee in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. They made their home in rural Hillsboro where James continued farming until his retirement. James also continued his civil service serving as clerk and rural mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Hillsboro for 26 years.

James was first and foremost a man of faith. His commitment to his Lord and Savior was the guiding direction in his life. His heart's desire was to live his life in honor to God. James was also a man of the land; a farmer at heart. He was most fulfilled when he was planning the crops, working the fields, or visiting with fellow farmers. Even in the closing days of his life, James retained his interest in the crops and the harvest.

James also had a great love for his family and friends. He was always sincerely interested in others and greatly enjoyed when he and Marian could extend the hospitality of their home.

In 2005, James and Marian moved to Fosston, Minnesota where they continued to reside until his passing on September 5, 2008 at the age of 87 years.

James is survived by his wife Marian of Fosston; daughters, Judy (Sheldon) Matson of Fosston and Linda (Phillip) Ward of Wasilla, AK; a son Robert (Becky) Overmoe of Fosston; grandchildren Barbara (Ryan) Johnson of Fosston, Brent Matson of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Phillip (Kinsey) Ward and Lindsey (Thomas) Smith all of Wasilla, AK; great grandchildren Ryler, Regan, Emalia, Isabella, Lucas, Elena, Mekennah, Elijah, and Bob; a sister, Alice Overmoe of Hillsboro, North Dakota; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four infant sisters, and brothers Leonard, Lloyd, and Earl.

Mildred Gertrude Louise (Olson)

Mildred Olmstead, age 90, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, December 20th at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 27th at 11:00 AM at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. John Dalen officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 26th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston, and for one hour before the funeral at the church. Interment will be at Kingo Lutheran Cemetery in Fosston, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements.

Mildred Gertrude Louise Olson was born March 25, 1916 in Popple Township, rural Bagley, Minnesota to parents Gustaf and Gena (Rudrud) Olson. As an infant and young child, she lived on her parents homestead in Roseau County, and at age 4 moved with her parents to a farm in Queen Township, near Fosston, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Cross Lake Lutheran Church, rural Fosston. She attended the Lade School near her home and graduated from Fosston High School. Mildred attended St. Cloud Teachers college and received her masters degree from Bemidji State College and taught school at various rural schools in Polk County as well at Santiago and Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

On August 17, 1943 she married Albert "Bob" Olmstead at her parent's farm near Fosston. Mildred and Bob lived in Anoka, Minnesota until January, 1946 when they purchased Mildred's parents farm in Queen Township, near Fosston. They remained on the farm until moving into Fosston in 1976. Mildred taught third grade at the Fosston Elementary School from 1960 until her retirement in 1981.

In 1995 she moved to Brainerd and in 1997 moved to Anoka. In 2002 she moved back to Fosston and resided at First Care Nursing home until her death at the age of 90.

Mildred enjoyed sewing, gardening and traveling, having taken many trips with family members after her retirement, which included a trip to the home where her grandfather lived as a child in Norway. She took a lot of pride and personal satisfaction in teaching and helping the hundreds of children that filled her classrooms over the years and enjoyed seeing her former students long after they had graduated from school.

Mildred was a long time member of Kingo Lutheran Church of Fosston and was active in church activities and teaching bible school. She had also been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her four children, Richard (Ellen) of Brainerd, Dale (Connie) of Coon Rapids, and Carol Yochum (Larry) of Colorado Springs, CO and Peter (VirJean) of Crookston, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Earl (Laura) Coleman of Roseville, Minnesota, as well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her parents and a sister, Mrs. Norman (Ruby) Peterson of Erskine.

Pallbearers were Eric Olmstead, Adam Olmstead, Paul Coleman, Bob Olson, Maurice Grover and Brian Burks. Interment in Kingo Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston.

Viola Iriene (Johnson) Olness

Viola Olness, age 89, from McIntosh, and formerly from Clearbrook, Minnesota passed away on Sunday, April 1st at McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh. Viola Iriene Johnson was born on March 23, 1923 in Alvarado, Minnesota, to Frederica Mildred Valerie (DeGrosselier) and Hjalmer Oscar Johnson.

Viola attended school in Vega Township near Alvarado. She worked in the sugar beet fields, at the Bagley hotel, and for the WAC during World War II before marrying Gorde Olness on June 16, 1943.

Viola farmed along side of her husband on a farm near Alida, Minnesota for several years. In 1956 they bought a farm north of Gonvick, Minnesota where they worked the land and raised nine children. In 1966 she moved to Leon Township outside of Clearbrook, Minnesota where she lived until 2004 when she moved to McIntosh, Minnesota. For the past two and a half years she was a resident of McIntosh Senior Living.

Viola enjoyed embroidering, photography, bingo, making quilts, playing cards, gardening— especially flowers, and in the later years mowing her lawn and watching deer and wildlife. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and is kindly remembered as saying, "Be good for Grandma".

On Sunday, April 1, 2012 Viola passed away at McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh at the age of 89 years.

Viola is survived by her nine children, Shirley Delage of McIntosh, Josephine Kelly of Clearbrook, John (Sherry) Olness of Superior, Wisconsin, Gorde (Rita) Olness of Cloquet, Minnesota, Lueman (Roselie) Olness of Andover, Minnesota, Viola (David) Myklejord of Fosston, Minnesota, June (Larry) Rinkenberger of Palmdale, CA, Gloria Olness of Bagley, Minnesota, and Mary Lou Slininger of Duluth, Minnesota; sisters, Levina Brosdahl of Warren, Minnesota, and Gloria Capucille of Escondido, CA; brother, Maynard Johnson of San Bernadino, CA; 23 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frederica Mildred and Hjalmer Johnson; husband Gorde Olness in 1985; one infant son, Gary Olness; sisters, Charlotte Johnson and Helma Larson, infant twin sisters, Lilly and Lillian, Viola's twin sister, Violet; brother, Melvin Johnson, and infant brother, Hilmer Johnson (tiwn of Helma).

Allen Marvis Olson

Allen Olson, age 80, of Gully, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at his home in rural Gully. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2014 at Bethel Assembly Church in Fosston, Minnesota with Marilyn Malmanger officiating. Allen Marvis Olson was born on November 20, 1933 in Queen Township, rural Fosston Minnesota to parents Carl and Beatrice (Swamby) Olson. He attended country school in rural Gully, Minnesota until the eighth grade and helped on the family farm.

Allen worked driving truck hauling gravel and working road construction living in a small trailer with his wife (Irene), and oldest daughter (Debbie) who traveled with him to gravel pits and construction sites for several years. He could remember every road he worked on. He was very mechanically inclined and could almost fix anything without effort.

On January 18, 1958 he married Irene G. Folz. In 1962, they purchased a farm south of Gully, where they farmed small grains and had dairy cattle. Allen worked for HL Hunt Potatoes in the early 60's then began his career at Land O' Lakes until his retirement in 1992. Following his retirement, he continued farming and raising beef cattle being one of the first ranchers to have black angus cattle.

Allen enjoyed hunting, farming, traveling to Montana to visit his daughter (Connie) while she was living in Montana and watching his youngest daughter (Lisa) performing in rodeos. Some of his best memories was his trip to Norway with his brother Leon. Allen enjoyed going to auction sales, tractors and collecting guns. And the last few years he enjoyed spending time in Oklahoma and Texas with his special friend Jewel Erickson during the winter months.

On Tuesday, May 20, 2014 Allen passed away at his home in rural Gully at the age of 80 years and six months.

Survivors include three children, Debbie (Bruce) Haaven of McIntosh, Minnesota, Connie (Rusty) Irby of Gainsville, FL, and Lisa (William J.) Vedbraaten of Gully; grandchildren, Tina Haaven (Jim Farstad), Wendy (Scott) Kearns, Lindsay Haaven, Rainee Haaven, Roman Clark, Brittany (Chris) Carlson, Hannah Irby, Chris (Haven) Foldoe, Joe, Jon & Brandon Foldoe; great-grandchildren, Thea, Eli, Jeb & Sadie Haaven-Farstad, Nathan Kearns, Mason & Levi Halstad, Cooper & Trenton Clark and Hunter Foldoe; sisters-in-law, Leony Olson, June Olson and Geri Aanerud, brothers-in-law, Delbert Folz, Floyd (Margorie) Folz and Jim (Belinda) Folz; numerous nieces and nephews. And special friend Jewel Erickson of Clearbrook.

Diane Olson, age 63, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (December 28th) at her home. Diane Phyllis Nelson was born on March 19, 1947 in Duluth, Minnesota, to parents Elmore and Thelma (Halvorson) Nelson. She grew up near Plummer on the family mink farm until the third grade when they moved to Sand Hill Lake near Fosston. She graduated from Fosston High School in the class of 1965.

Diane was married to Merlin Olson on October 23, 1966. They had four children, Jeff, Mike, Scott and Teresa. Diane worked various jobs throughout the community of Fosston including the Fosston Hospital and retired from Stenberg Welding. She was married to Rod Olson on July 30, 1983.

She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston. She loved quilting and knitting. She knit hats and mittens for her grandkids and Christmas stockings for her whole family. Diane especially enjoyed Holidays with her family.

Diane is survived by her husband, Rod of Fosston; four children, Jeff of Fosston, Mike (Tina) of Fosston, Scott (Becky) of Bejou, Minnesota, and Teresa (Carey) Sannes of Plummer, Minnesota; ten grandchildren, Cody, Savannah, Blake, Lane, Cole, Alyssa, Samuel, William, Avery Diane, and Lukas; and one great granddaughter, Ava. Cousins and other family also survive.

Eleanore (Anderson) Olson

1920-2007

Eleanore Olson, age 87, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday (September 8th) at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday (September 12th) at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center Chapel in Erskine with the Rev. Lois Ball officiating. Interment will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston . Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the nursing home chapel. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine.

Eleanore Olson was born on August 3, 1920 to Norwegian immigrants Nels and Emma (Overland) Anderson on a farm in Sletten Township.

She attended country school in the day when there were no buses and her older brothers often brought her to school by horse and wagon or sleigh. Her older sister, Gladys, was her teacher for a time. In high school she roomed in McIntosh going home only at Christmas and during the summer. She graduated in 1937 at age sixteen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Gosen church.

After graduation Eleanore worked at Lundmark's Cafe in Fosston. On April 2, 1942 she married Ward (Bud) Olson. For a time, when Bud was in the Army during World War II, Eleanore and Julie lived at Fort Leonard Wood traveling back and forth by train. After the war Bud and Eleanore made their home in Fosston and were married 46 years before his death in 1988. Eleanore moved to Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine in 2002.

Eleanore was a member of Hope and Kingo Churches and was an active member in "circle" and taught Friday school. She was a member of PTA for 30 years and also a den mother for Cub Scouts. She was an antique collector and restored many antique frames. Her house was a reflection of her decorating talents. She was an excellent cook and baker. She scrapbooked before it became a fad. Eleanore spoke fluent Norwegian and was proud of her Norwegian heritage.

Eleanor was preceded in death by an infant son Scott Anders, her husband Ward, sister Gladys Gran, and brothers, Albert and Helmer.

She is survived by four children, Julie (Dean) Fermenick of Woodbury, Minnesota, Neal "Buff" of Fargo, North Dakota, Tammy (Rick) Clark of Lengby, Minnesota, and Todd of St. Cloud, Minnesota; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Elling Olson

1912-2009

Elling Olson, age 97, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (December 2nd) at Midway Care Center in Fosston. Elling Olson was born on February 26, 1912 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Lewis and Manda (Knutson) Olson. He grew up in Brandsvold Township and attended rural school at the Cloverdale School. For most of his life he lived on the family farm in Brandsvold Township, homesteaded by his grandparents Jacob and Martha Olson after they immigrated from Norway. When Prairie Pines Assisted Living opened their doors in December of 2004 Elling was one of their first residents. He moved into Midway Care Center in November of 2007.

He was united in marriage to Judith Mickelson on October 31, 1934. Together they raised their family and farmed in Brandsvold Township. Elling also had been employed at the HLH Potato Plant in Fosston and did various construction work in the area. In his later years Elling enjoyed all the activities involved with harvest. Elling loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren, whenever they visited Grandpa Elling always had a huge smile and outstretched hand.

During their retirement years, Elling and Judith spent their winters in the south and enjoyed traveling together for many years. One winter when they were in their sixties they traveled from Minnesota, to Florida, across to California, north to Washington state and home again to Minnesota. When Elling was 73, he and Judith drove to Alaska with three of their grandchildren. The grandchildren still have stories to tell about their trip! Elling and Judith were blessed to have celebrated their 74th anniversary in 2008. Judith passed away in January of 2009.

Elling faithfully attended Bethel Assembly Church in Fosston. He passed away on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Midway Care Center in Fosston at the age of 97 years.

Survivors include his sons, James of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Dennis (Judy) of Fisher, Minnesota, David (Kathy) of Fosston, Philip (Jean) of Fosston, Eldon of Rush City, Minnesota, Merlin (Pam) of Lengby, Minnesota, and Daniel (Darnell) of Moorhead, Minnesota; 24 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Inga Hanson of Fosston and Alice Edie of Bloomington, MN; sisters-in-law, Grace Olson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Martha Roue of Fosston and Esther Dearborn of Washington state. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Ron in 2008; his parents; brother, Kenneth; brothers-in-law, Eddie Hanson and Mel Edie; and daughters-in-law, Lois and Loretta.

Pallbearers will be grandsons: Doug Olson, Keith Olson, Craig Olson, Harlan Olson, Wayne Olson, Mike Olson, Scott Olson, Jeff Olson, Aaron Olson, Eric Olson, and Jeffrey Olson.

Emaleigh Nicole Olson

Emaleigh Nicole Olson, 5-year-old daughter of Kenneth Olson and Jamie Renna of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Monday (September 19th) at Childrens Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday (September 23rd) at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. John Dalen officiating. Emaleigh Nicole Olson was born on March 31, 2006 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to parents Kenneth and Jamie (Parker) Olson. She lived in Fosston with her parents and was in Mrs. Lucken's Kindergarten class at Magelssen Elementary School in Fosston.

Emaleigh enjoyed life! She loved to play with her friends, go on walks and play at the park. She also loved school and being with her teachers and classmates. She especially enjoyed playing with her brothers and sister and "cuddle time" with her parents.

Despite her disabilities, Emaleigh always had a smile on her face. She was a strong person with a big heart and, even at her young age, was an inspiration to many people. She will be dearly missed.

Emaleigh passed away early Monday morning, September 19, 2011 at Childrens Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 5 years, five months and 19 days.

She is survived by her loving parents, Kenneth and Jamie of Fosston, Minnesota; brothers, Robbie and Lucas and sister, Makenzie all at home in Fosston; grandparents, Bob and Linda Olson of Fosston, and Allison Booth of Benton, LA; great grandparents, Lila Booth of Benton, LA, Ruby Holt of Bejou, Minnesota, and Patricia Olson of Rochester, Minnesota; aunts and uncles, Sarah and Jason Kotrba and their children, Kylie and Gemma of Goodridge, Minnesota, Rocky and Allie Parker of Shreveport, LA, and Eden Miller and Morgan Miller of Shreveport, LA; and numerous great aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by great grandparents, Alf Holt, Richard Olson, Archie Booth, and Loretta Wilson; aunts, Diane Olson and LuAnn Holzschuh; and her dog "Tiny".

Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Emaleigh's family and friends and Mrs. Lucken's Kindergarten class.

Erin Colleen Osmonson was born on August 24, 1969 to parents Bennett and Gloria (Johnson) Osmonson in Fosston, Minnesota. She was Baptized and Confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Fosston. Her love Of Jesus was made real by Grandma Myrtle, who's influence helped her put faith into action. She graduated from Fosston High School in 1987 and Concordia College in 1991.

She was united in marriage to Brian Arlen Olson in Fosston on July 27, 1991. To this union 3 children were born, Cody, Alexi and Nicole. They resided in Salol, Minnesota from 1991 to 1993 where Erin was employed at Northern Wood Products. In 1993 they moved to a farm in rural Gully, Minnesota and currently reside there. She was employed by the RLCC school district and currently was teaching Interactive TV to Fertile, Grygla, Red Lake Falls and Win-E-Mac school districts. She had worked at Quickstop in Fosston as well. Erin was involved in many activities including 4-H and Project 120 for state representative Edgar Olson. Music was a passion and she participated in several local theater productions, local community choirs, at sports events and any time she was asked to sing. Other interests were: reading, crocheting, counted cross stitch, stamping and gardening until she became physically unable to do it.

Erin passed away on Monday, November 22, 2010 after a long and courageous journey dealing with Malignant Hemangiopericytoma at Essentia Hospital in Fosston at the age of 41 years.

Survivors are husband Brian of Gully, Minnesota, children: Cody, Alexi and Nicole, Gully. Parents Bennett and Gloria Osmonson, Gully. Mother-in-law Ardell Olson (Joe Bauer), Red Lake Falls, Minnesota. Grandmother Myrtle Osmonson, McIntosh, Minnesota. Brothers Greg (Julie) Osmonson, Bloomington, Minnesota and Cory (Jodie) Osmonson, Gully. Nieces and nephews: Caden, Emme, Karlie, Hunter, Jayson and Tristen Osmonson.

Sisters-in law: Charlene Olson, Warroad, Minnesota, Cheryl (Dean) Lorzal, Red Lake Falls and Jennifer Olson, Crookston, Minnesota.

Brothers-in-law: Darin (Tammy) Olson, Warroad, Michael Olson, Red Lake Falls, Jamie Bender, Warroad, Waylen Olson, Warroad, Kyle (Jessica) Olson, Fosston and Brandon Olson, Red Lake Falls.

Gladys Olson, age 70, of McIntosh, Minnesota passed away on Saturday, October 3rd at McIntosh Manor Nursing Home in McIntosh. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 7th at 11:00 AM at Mount Carmel Free Lutheran Church in McIntosh with Pastor Dale Mellgren and Pastor W. E. Danielson officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the McIntosh Community Center. Interment will be at the church cemetery in McIntosh, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home serving McIntosh is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials can be directed to the Gideons.

Gladys Helene Ostenaa was born on May 28, 1939 in McIntosh, Minnesota the daughter of Gunnie & Signe (Ramsey) Ostenaa.

Gladys was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh as a young girl.

Gladys graduated from McIntosh High School in 1958. She worked at Pioneer Memorial Home after graduation and later moved to Minneapolis where she continued her studies at Lutheran Bible Institute for 2 years and Austin Community College for 2 years where in 1987 she received her Associates Degree. She continued her work as a personal care attendant for 14 years doing private duty care and working at Mt. Sinai Hospital before moving back to McIntosh. While residing in the area she worked in Bemidji at Gold Pine Home and also at Poplar Meadows Assisted Living in McIntosh. She also continued to work privately doing home health care.

Because of her love of God and her faith she was involved with World Mission Prayer League as a missionary in Afghanistan from 1978-1981.

She was united in marriage to Lester Olson on October 25, 1997 at Mt. Carmel Church in McIntosh.

Gladys enjoyed sewing, gardening, camping and taking care of her nieces and nephews whom she always referred to as her "little darlings".

Gladys passed away on October 3, 2009 at McIntosh Manor Nursing Home in McIntosh at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 5 days.

Survivors include her husband Lester of McIntosh, three brothers: Stanley (Ruby); Roy (Mary); and Gordie (Cindy) all of McIntosh. Brother and Sister-in-Law Floyd and Gerry Olson of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; Nieces and Nephews: Shawn (Tamera) Ostenaa; Tanya (Erik) Hamre; Nick (April) Ostenaa; Jackie (Cody) Huschle. Seven great nieces and nephews also survive.

Those who preceeded her in death were her parents; two brothers, Philip & Norman and a brother and sister-in-law, Lyman & Martha Olson.

Judith Olson, age 98, of Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Saturday, January 17th at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 21st at 11:00 AM at Bethel Assembly Church in Fosston with Pastor Hollis Graves officiating. Judith Camella Mickelson was born July 24, 1910 in Queen Township, rural Fosston, Minnesota, to Magnus and Amanda (Egeland) Mickelson. She attended Sunnyside School rural Fosston.

Judith was united in marriage to Elling Olson on October 31, 1934. On October 31, 2008 she celebrated her 74th anniversary with her husband Elling.

She was a homemaker all her life and for a time worked at HLH Potato Processing and at Johnson Rest Home in Fosston. She will be remembered as a wonderful cook, especially her homemade bread and delicious donuts. Judith was an avid gardener, loved watching birds, and traveling. She was very proud of her family and loved to see her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Judith was a faithful member of Bethel Assembly Church of Fosston.

On Saturday, January 17, 2009 Judith passed away at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston at the age of 98.

She is survived by her husband Elling of Fosston; sons, James of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Dennis (Judy) of Fisher, Minnesota, David (Kathy) of Fosston, Minnesota, Philip (Jean) of Fosston, Minnesota, Eldon of Rush City, Minnesota, Merlin (Pam) of Lengby, Minnesota, and Daniel (Darnell) of Moorhead, Minnesota; 24 Grandchildren; 39 Great Grandchildren; and three Great Great Grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Martha Roue of Fosston, Minnesota, and Esther Dearborn of Washington state along with many nieces and nephews.

Judith was preceeded in death by her parents; son, Ron in 2008, daughter-in-law, Lois in 2007; sisters, Ruth Vigoren, Mary Johnston, and Mildred Broin; and brothers, Rueben and Joseph Mickelson.

LeRoy Olson, age 80, of rural Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (September 27th) at his home surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. LeRoy Edgar Olson was born on October 10, 1930 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Carl and Beatrice (Swanby) Olson. He grew up in Eden Township, rural Gully, Minnesota and attended the Sunnyside country school. He then attended the Crookston AC to study agriculture business for a time before returning home to help his dad on the farm.

LeRoy was united in marriage to Leoney Larsen on July 1, 1950 at Bethel Assembly Church in Fosston. After their marriage, they stayed on the home place, then moved to a farm near Fosston in 1952.

In 1957, the family moved to Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. It was there that LeRoy worked as a foreman doing building construction and inspections. In 1959, LeRoy was offered a position as bookkeeper for the lumber yard in Callaway, Minnesota. The family then moved to Callaway, living there for several years until the company changed hands in 1966. At that time, they returned to the area and purchased a farm in Queen Township north of Fosston where they have since resided. It was on this farm that LeRoy had a dairy operation that eventually led to his current Angus beef herd. He also grew small grains, raised other livestock and did various carpentry work on the farm and in the area.

He was a member of Bethel Assembly Church and helped on the building committee for the current church. He and Leoney were the first couple to be married in the original Bethel Assembly Church in Fosston (now the Fosston Library). He liked to hunt and spend time outdoors and was known as a hard worker.

LeRoy passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at his home in rural Fosston surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Leoney of Fosston; seven children, Dava Hruby-Olson of Gully, Minnesota, David (Sandra) Olson of Gully, Bob Olson of Fosston, Rick (Betty) Olson of Colorado, Patty Anderson (John Knudson) of Ada, Minnesota, Jeff Olson of McIntosh, Minnesota, and Holly (Chad) Thorssen of Fosston; 27 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; one brother, Allen Olson of Gully, Minnesota. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leon Olson; and sister, Bernice Haltli; and infant grandson, Michael Olson; sister-laws, Irene Olson; brother-in-law, Lester Haltli

Marlan Olson, age 68, of Gonvick, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday (October 17th) at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday (October 22nd) at Samhold Lutheran Church in Gonvick with the Rev. Michael Giese officiating. Interment will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Oklee, Minnesota at a later date. Marlan Elroy Olson was born on February 23, 1944 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Ingvald and Ruth (Kingsland) Olson. He grew up in Oklee, Minnesota and graduated from Oklee High School in 1962. He entered the United States Marine Corps on September 3, 1963 and served overseas during the Vietnam War. He received his honorable discharge on September 1, 1967 and returned to Oklee.

Marlan was united in marriage to Marge Zimmer on October 7, 1967 in Sidney, Montana. After their marriage, they lived for a short time in Minneapolis before settling in Gonvick. Marlan went to work as a cattle hauler for his brother, George, for several years. He then worked for Northern Pipeline for five years and spent the remainder of his working years as an over the road truck driver (owner/operator). He traveled through a majority of the states and for several years he had his wife, Marge, by his side.

He was an expert when it came to history, specifically when speaking of wars and politics, and constantly kept his family and friends properly educated with his abundance of knowledge.

Marlan's love for music has always been clearly visible. He was a true country music fan, but would always "rock out", especially in his truck and with his grandchildren, to anything that had a beat. He always had the greatest dance moves and swept everyone off their feet.

He was a member of Samhold Lutheran Church and the Gonvick American Legion Post #304. He liked driving truck, riding snowmobile, cutting wood and was a dedicated Minnesota Vikings fan. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Marge, of Gonvick; two children, Mitch (Vicki) Olson of Annandale, Minnesota, and Melissa (Darin) Maruska of Big Lake, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Brooke Maruska, Cole Olson, Morgan Olson, Lindsay Maruska, Julia Olson, and Trevor Maruska. Siblings, Hansine Greek of Camarilla, CA, George (Ardelle) of Oklee, Clifford (Mary) of Thornton, CO, Norman (Joy) of Harwood, North Dakota, Ivy Hahn of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Amy Olson of Rural Hall, NC, and Sylvia (Gary) Munter of Fosston; sister-in-law, Marian Olson of McIntosh; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his special pet, Molly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Erling, and Alfred (and his wife, Leslie); brother-in-law, Jerry Greek and three nephews.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Marlan's grandchildren and Howard Krossen, Roger Hoshal, Brad Holm, Don Ducote, Albert Graftaas, Dick Maple, and his many friends and trucker buddies.

Mary Mildred Rost Oppegaard

Mary Oppegaard, age 81, of Erskine, Minnesota, went home peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior in heaven on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Mary Mildred Rost was born on June 12, 1930, in Winger Township, Minnesota to parents Jonas and Ragna (Johnson) Rost. She grew up in the Winger and Knute Township area and attended rural school at the Sarah View School in Knute Township.

Mary was united in marriage to Reuben Oppegaard on July 1, 1950. After their marriage they lived and raised their family on the Oppegaard family homestead. She lived there until entering the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine on August 26, 2004.

She was a member of Gosen Lutheran Church of rural Erskine. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, birds and all of nature. She will be dearly missed by her family.

Survivors include her five children, Rose (Daniel) Ranisate of Shevlin, Minnesota, Judy (Alan) Erickson of Erskine, Boyd (Julie) Oppegaard of Erskine, Gay (Steven) Hesse of Warroad, Minnesota, and Milo Oppegaard of Erskine (special friend, Cecily Erickson); 16 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; two sisters, Ilo Asp of Oakdale, Minnesota, and Mabel Eklund of Moorhead, Minnesota. Nieces, nephews and cousins; and two very special friends, Ila Mahlen and Evelyn Johnson, both of Erskine.

She was preceded in death by her husband on January 16, 1980; her parents; three brothers, Elmer, Johnnie, and Vernon; and three sisters, Mildred Johnson, Alma Banister, and Elida Capistran.

Wallace Eugene "Wally" Olson

Wallace "Wally" Olson, age 83, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (September 15th) at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Wallace Eugene Olson was born on April 4, 1926 to parents Theodore and Selma (Swanson) Olson in Hill River Township, rural Fosston, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and grew up and attended rural school at Columbia Heights School in Columbia Township near Fosston. Wally also attended the Oakland School in Hill River Township.

Wally worked with his father on the farm until he entered the U.S. Army in 1950. He was in the 45th Infantry and fought in the Korean War. Wally was awarded the Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star, and the United Nations Service Medal. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1952 and returned home to farm with his father.

After the service, he worked various jobs including work on the Iron Range, general construction in the Fosston area, farmed in Rosebud Township, and in 1968 went to work for the Fosston Co-op Ag Service where he worked for 40 years.

Wally was a longtime member of Poplar Lake Lutheran Church where he was active on the church council and other church activities. He was a 50 year member of both the Lengby VFW Post #2759 and Fosston American Legion Post #113. Wally was supervisor on the East Polk County Conservation Board for eight years. He enjoyed going to the John Deere Dealership everyday to see the guys and go out for coffee and shake dice, visiting with people at his job, going to auction sales, and working on the farm. Wally was always ready to help anyone in need.

On Tuesday, September 15, 2009 Wally passed away at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota at the age of 83 years.

Survivors include his sister, Elaine Olson of Fosston; nephews and nieces, Bruce Olson, Rebecca Flaherty, Craig Olson, David Olson, Cindy Gustafson, Lorrie Harris, Lois Storey, Carol Johnson, Kathy Bell, Dale Bakken, Ryan Bakken, Paul Bakken, Debbie Moon, Janelle Fowlds, Jeff Anderson and Jody Bergeron; and special friend, Ardy Nordskog of Fosston and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Parnell Oppegaard

Parnell Oppegaard, age 87, of McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Monday (December 31st) at his home in McIntosh. Parnell was born on November 6, 1920, in rural McIntosh to parents Hans and Berget (Knutson) Oppegaard. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church where he remained a life-long member. He attended school at the Oppegaard Country School and he graduated from McIntosh High School in 1940. Parnell was united in marriage to DeLaine Rolf on April 5, 1952, and to this union four children were born.

He farmed for a living, raising cattle in his earlier years and later growing Christmas trees and was an inventor of many things. His most notable invention was the first rotary snowplow, produced at Erskine Manufacturing. Parnell and DeLaine purchased the family farm in 1963 and it was designated a Century Farm in 1999. Parnell and DeLaine enjoyed traveling and were able to visit 35 states. In December of 2000, they moved into town where Parnell found another hobby in flower-gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years and their children Linda DeNell and Larry Oppegaard, both of McIntosh; Julie (Mike) Miller of Oxnard, CA; and Curtis (Vicki) Oppegaard of Sydney, Australia; and three grandsons, Jeremy of Savage, Minnesota; Brandon of Cloquet, Minnesota; and Justin of Oxnard, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings Maria Stordahl and two sets of infant twins, and grandson Jason Raisanen.

Sylvia Agnes Olson was born on May 18, 1926 in Crookston, Minnesota, to parents Carl and Anna (Gunderson) Olson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Sylvia graduated from Mentor High School in 1945 and then went to teacher's training in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota. She taught rural school near McIntosh for one year. After that she worked in local homes doing cleaning and other household duties.

She was a quiet person but enjoyed company. She kept herself busy crocheting, doing embroidery, working on all kinds of puzzles and reading books. She enjoyed going out to eat and going to the relatives homes for various get-togethers. She entered the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine in June of 2006.

Sylvia went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center at the age of 81 years.

She is survived by many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Anna Olson; and one brother, Clarence.

Pallbearers will be Reg Galland, Bruce Galland, Dale Galland, Gordon Erickson, Robert Wolf, and Jack Sveningson.

Organist will be Marilyn Arness and soloist will be Grace Lee.

Eddie Elmer Osland

Eddie E. Osland, age 76, from Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Thursday, February 23rd at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Eddie Elmer Osland was born on June 26, 1935 in Richardton, North Dakota, to Eddie C. and Lois M. (McGraw) Osland. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended school in Buxton, North Dakota and also at North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton. On May 25, 1957 he married Tillie Alexander in Grand Forks and they resided in Buxton, North Dakota. They moved to Billings, MT for a short time and then moved to Erskine, MN. Eddie worked numerous jobs including: working for his father in the gravel business at a young age and also owning his own gravel truck and dray business, working at Bradley Motors, driving truck for Northern Tank Lines and later Dixon Brothers, working at the Erskine school as a bus driver and janitor, and working at ODC in Crookston.

Some of Eddie's hobbies included woodworking, restoring John Deere tractors, and driving his tractors around his farm. Eddie always enjoyed sharing stories with others and putting his family first.

On Thursday, February 23, 2012 Eddie passed away at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine at the age of 76 years with his family by his side.

Eddie is survived by his children: Everett (Rae Ann) Osland, Erskine, Lori (Rob) Hole, Erskine, Robert Osland, San Jose, CA, David (Sue) Osland, Crookston, Gary (Laura) Osland, Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Brian Osland, Erskine. Grandchildren: Amanda (Shane) Vettleson, Melissa (Aaron) Chaput, Jessica (Brian) Stark, Cassandra (Mike) Heide, Nicole (Jason) Carlson, Kristen (Jeremy) Hole-Morgenroth, Amanda (Seth) Volker, Quentin Schaible, Alissa Osland, Cody Osland, Echo Osland, Hailey Osland, Olivia Osland, and Dustin Osland. Eleven great-grandchildren also survive. Brothers: George (Patsy) Osland, McIntosh, Harold (Evelyn) Osland, Manito, IL, and Miles Osland, Moorhead. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two infant brothers and one infant sister at birth.

Mary J. Olson, age 80, of Fosston and formerly from Lengby, MN, passed away on Friday, November 9th at Innovis Hospital in Fargo. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 14th at 11:00 AM at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. John Dalen officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5: 00 to 6:30 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston, and for one hour before the funeral at the church. Mary J. Vedbraaten was born on May 24, 1927, to parents Arthur and Anna (Nelson) Vedbraaten in Holst Township, rural Bagley, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and attended school in the Fosston and Bagley area.

Mary was united in marriage to John E. Olson on July 23, 1945 in Gonvick, Minnesota. They resided and farmed in Rosebud Township, rural Fosston until 1968 when they moved to Lengby, Minnesota.

She cooked and waitressed for many years at Lengby cafes and supper club. Mary also cleaned for many years at the Lengby VFW until she retired because of her health.

Mary was a member of Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston.

On Friday, November 9, 2007 Mary J. Olson passed away at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota at the age of 80 years.

Survivors include her son, J. Duane Olson and his wife Janet of Fosston; three grandchildren, Lynn (Jamie) Olson of Lengby, Joe (Jan) Olson of Fosston and Tami Olson of Fosston; five great grandchildren, Nicole, Brady, Brandon, Joshua and Ryan Olson; one sister-in-law, Edith Vedbraaten of Fosston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; five brothers, Lawrence, Oscar, Adolph, Edward and Nils; and two sisters, Polly Rodgers and Inga Klicker.

Myrtle Cordella (Wold) Osmonson

1918-2013

Died: April 24, 2013

Myrtle Osmonson, age 94, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (April 24th) at McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday (April 27th) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Friday (April 26th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Myrtle Cordella Wold was born on July 15, 1918 in Trail, Minnesota to parents Selmer and Selma (Jacobson) Wold. She grew up near Trail and attended rural school in Eden Township. Following her schooling, Myrtle worked for Palma Wold in Fergus Falls as a cooks helper at the Lutheran Bible Institute.

Myrtle was united in marriage to Blanchard Osmonson on May 18, 1940. After their marriage, they lived and raised their family on the Osmonson family farm north of Fosston. Blanchard passed away on April 29, 1966. Myrtle continued to live on the farm until 2005 when she became a resident of First Care Nursing Home in Fosston. In August of 2010 she moved to McIntosh Senior Living where she was currently living.

Myrtle's faith and the word of the Lord was her light throughout her life. She lived that faith as a life-long and dedicated member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was active in Ladies Aid and Sunday School. She also sang with the Zion Family Singers and, for many years, with her brothers, Lloyd, Vernon and Kenneth. She also enjoyed crocheting and quilting. She made many quilts, rugs and doilies for church, family and friends. She will be dearly missed by her family and many good friends.

Survivors include her six children, Bennett (Gloria) Osmonson of Gully, Minnesota, Faye (Jack) Kroening of Bemidji, Minnesota, Marilyn (Duane) Evje of Leonard, Minnesota, Orlett (Larry) Hedlund of McIntosh, Minnesota, Rosie (Jim) Goldsmith of Fosston, and Dale (Tammie) Osmonson of Gully, Minnesota; one brother, Kenneth (Arlene) Wold of Fosston; two sisters-in-law, Carol Wold of Fosston and Ruby Wold of Fosston; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; granddaughter, Erin; sister, Esther Sundbom; and brothers, Lloyd and Vernon.

Pallbearers were her Grandsons: Greg Osmonson, Cory Osmonson, Shawn Hedlund, Wade Hedlund, Carl Hedlund, Timothy Evje, and Daniel Evje.

Luella Mae Ostby

1932-2013

Luella Ostby, age 80, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (January 8th) at Riverview Hospital in Crookston, Minnesota. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (January 12th) at the United Methodist Church in Erskine with the Rev. Michelle Miller officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, rural Erskine at a later date. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Luella Mae Ostby was born on May 5, 1932, in Erskine, Minnesota, to Henry and Rosella (Truehl) Ostby. She attended school in Erskine and graduated in 1951. In the early fifties, Luella worked for Garden Valley Telephone Company as a telephone operator. She then went out to Portland, Oregon and attended business college. She returned to Erskine and spent many years caring for children in the community. In 1970, Luella was again employed with Garden Valley and worked for them for 37 years. She retired on September 1, 2003. Luella lived with her parents and in her mother's later years, cared for her.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Erskine.

Luella loved children. Even though she never had any of her own, she "adopted" all her nieces and nephews and many of her friends children. She gave gifts, wrote letters and sent birthday cards to many children that she knew through the years.

Luella was an avid reader, loved to knit and embroider, and when she was able, wrote many letters to relatives and friends. She also loved science fiction movies, books, and especially enjoyed watching Star Wars and Star Trek.

She entered the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine in September of 2008. Luella passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Riverview Hospital in Crookston, Minnesota at the age of 80 years, nine months and three days.

Survivors include three brothers, Leroy (Patty) of St. Hilaire, Minnesota, Wally (Linda) of Tucson, AZ, and Ron (Ruth) of Thief River Falls, Minnesota; 11 nieces and nephews, Robert Ostby, Kathy Lenk, Dale Ostby, Paul Ostby, John Ostby, Lori Ostby, Matt Ostby, Rick Ostby, Lisa Heuer, Kevin Ostby, and Ryan Ostby; special cousin, Patti Bacon, loyal phone companion and friend Linda Jorgenson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Harvey; sister-in-law, Carol; and one niece, Angie.

Mavis Carol Irene (Berg) Olson

Mavis Olson, age 67, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (June 11th) at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Mavis Carol Irene Berg was born on July 2, 1940 in rural McIntosh, Minnesota to parents Carl and Cora (Olson) Berg. She attended country school, the Erskine school for a year and graduated from Fosston High School in 1958.

Mavis was united in marriage to Donald Olson on July 5, 1958 at Trinity Lutheran Church of rural McIntosh. After their marriage, they lived in Fosston where Mavis worked at Bratland's Cafe, the Green Lantern, and the Tip Top Cafe. She also worked at the Johnson Rest Home in Fosston as a Certified Nursing Assistant and was an Avon sales consultant for many years. Her most important work though came as being the best mother that she could be to her children. In recent years Mavis assisted her daughter, Angie, with her daycare.

She was a member of Bethel Assembly Church in Fosston. She enjoyed baking, sewing, circle-a-word puzzles and children. She especially loved the time that she could spend with her children and her grandchildren. Mavis will be dearly missed by her family, friends and her daycare "grandkids" who affectionately knew her as "Gammy".

Mavis passed away on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota at the at age of 67 years.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 50 years, Donald of Fosston; four children, Steve (Sue Ellen) Olson and their children, Ben, Dan, Tim and Katie of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Angie Olson of Fosston, Amy (Eric) Hovland and their children, Liz, Rachel and Bekkah of Mora, Minnesota, Pete Olson and his children, Lilly and Luke Ihrke of Fosston.

She is also survived by three sisters, Gladys Nornes of Finley, North Dakota, Ruth (Donn) Reichert of Clearbrook, Minnesota, and June (Ed) Parsley of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin; two brothers, Donavin (Kennlyn) Berg of Cocoa, FL and Ray (Betsy) Berg of Cudahy, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers Curtis and Myron Berg.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren.

Orville Harold Olson

Orville Olson, age 85, of Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Saturday (April 20th) at First Care Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday (April 25th) at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston, Minnesota with the Rev. John Dalen and Rev. Scott Morey officiating. Interment will be in Fridhem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lengby at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Wednesday (April 24th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Orville Harold Olson was born April 21st 1927 to Harold and Hilma (Peterson) Olson of Lengby, Minnesota. He was Baptized and Confirmed at Poplar Lake Church. He attended the Hoge School through the 8th grade.

He was united in marriage to Joyce Sundbom on April 12, 1952. They have farmed in Columbia Township east of Lengby since that time. Orville served in the U.S. Army 1945-1946 in post WWII France. He worked on Great Lakes Iron Ore Steamboats from 1954-1961 as a Helmsman.

Orville was a member of Poplar Lake Lutheran Church for many years and most currently a member of Fridhem Lutheran Church where he served on the boards and participated in church activities. He was also a board member for Columbia Township.

Orville enjoyed raising cattle and farming for many decades. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors. He was always ready to strike up a friendly conversation with anyone and discuss anything you wanted to talk about.

Orville went to be with the Lord on April 20, 2013 one day before his 86th birthday.

He is survived by his wife Joyce of 61 years. He is also survived by three sons, Miles and wife Debbie of Buckley, Washington, Jerome of Buffalo, Minnesota, and Jeff who will be taking over the farming activities. He is also survived by one daughter, Janet and her husband Ralph of Buffalo, Minnesota. Other survivors include brothers Quentin and his wife Angelines of Lakeside, California, Floyd and his wife Ruth of Sunnyside, Washington and Dale and his wife Jonni of Phoenix, Arizona also one sister Audrey of Bemidji, Minnesota. Grandchildren include: Kelly, and Ethan in Minnesota, Oksana, Sergei and Erena of Washington and two great grandchildren Zach and Nikita also of Washington. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Hilma and brothers Francis, Eugene and Earl.

Ruby Veronica (Thompson) Ostenaa

Ruby Ostenaa, age 80, of McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday (May 5th) at Essentia Hospital in Fosston, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (May 12th) at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh with Pastor Ryan Rasmussen officiating. Interment will be in Vernes Lutheran Cemetery, rural McIntosh. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Friday (May 11th) at the McIntosh Community Center in McIntosh. Ruby Veronica Thompson was born on May 31, 1931 in Hill River Township, Minnesota, to parents Gilbert and Violet (Evenson) Thompson. She grew up in Hill River Township and attended the Lindsay country school through the eighth grade. She then attended McIntosh High School, graduating in 1950. During her school years, Ruby worked at the Felix Cafe in McIntosh.

Ruby was married to Kim Christopherson on September 9, 1950. After their marriage, they lived in McIntosh and Ruby raised her family and also worked at the McIntosh Bakery. They purchased the Home Cafe in McIntosh in 1962 and operated it until 1965 at which time they took over ownership of the Felix Cafe. Kim passed away on February 20, 1971. She continued ownership and management of the cafe until 1979.

She was united in marriage to Stanley Ostenaa on February 24, 1979. She and Stanley lived in McIntosh and took ownership of Flapjack County USA in McIntosh until she sold the business and retired in 1997. She was a restaurant owner for over 30 years. After her retirement, she continued to be an active member of the community, including eight years as the manager of the Senior Meals site.

Ruby was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, past board member of Inter County Community Council, was active in 4-H, Lutheran Social Services, McIntosh V.F.W. Auxiliary (past President), McIntosh Library Board, and the Mac Booster Club. She was also instrumental in starting the Senior Meals program in McIntosh and was head cook at the site for many years. Ruby was voted as the first woman on the McIntosh City Council and the first woman elected Mayor of McIntosh. She also received a prestigious award from Land O' Lakes and was once named McIntosh Business Woman of the Year. Her passions were cooking, baking and reading. Ruby will be greatly missed by her family and her community.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley of McIntosh; daughter, Marcy Wessman of Duluth, Minnesota; and son, Mike "Kilmer" (Dianne) Christopherson of McIntosh; grandchildren, Christopher Burslie of Seoul, South Korea, Jill (Brett) Schulz of Crookston, Minnesota, and Samantha Christopherson of McIntosh; five great grandchildren, Elizabeth Wohllaib, Chase Burslie, Haley Burslie, and Katelynn and Taylor Schulz; sisters, Grace Francis of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Leona Humphrey of New Brighton, Minnesota, and Vicki Dishman of Wisconsin; brothers-in-law, Roy Ostenaa (Mary) and Gordie (Cindy) Ostenaa of, all of McIntosh. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kim; brothers, Sid Thompson and Cliff Thompson; brothers-in-law, Paul Dishman, Bill Francis, and Philip Ostenaa; and sister-in-law, Gladys Olson.

Byron "Bud" Ostgard, age 94, from Mentor, Minnesota passed away on Friday, January 30th at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, February 4th at 3:00 PM at Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor with Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. A visitation period for family and friends will be held for one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be at a later date at the Fertile City Cemetery in Fertile, Minnesota and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine is in charge of the arrangements. Byron Gerald Ostgard Sr. was born on December 19, 1914 in Tilden Township, rural Mentor, Minnesota to Ole Ostgard, but was raised by his grandparents John and Brita Ostgard. Growing up he attended school in rural Fertile, Minnesota and he loved farming and raising horses.

On December 19, 1936 Bud married Doris Jensrud and together they farmed and raised their family in rural Mentor. For a short period of time Bud and Doris were in Hibbing, Minnesota where Bud worked in the iron mines. In 1978 they started wintering in Mission, TX and continued that until Doris' death in 2000.

Bud was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor.

On Friday, January 30, 2009 Byron "Bud" Ostgard passed away at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota at the age of 94 years.

He is survived by two daughters, Karen (Peder) Larson of Warren, Minnesota and Susan (Milton) Reck of Mentor; grandchildren, Leslie Ostgard, Jerry (Lori) Ostgard, Shelly (Dan) Nowakowski, Deanna (Lance) McFarland, Todd (Becky) Larson, Tim (Stacey) Larson, Kurt (Bethany) Reck, and Christopher (Chasity) Reck; 18 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; half brother, John; half sister, Pat; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; son, Byron Jr.; grandson, Michael Ostgard; and his parents.
