Jerome Curtis Nelson

1927-2007

Born: September 26, 1927
Died: January 13, 2007

U.S. Veteran

Jerome Nelson, age 79, of Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Saturday, January 13th at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 15th at 1:00 PM at Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston with Rev. Bob Dennis officiating. Interment will be at Poplar Lake Cemetery, rural Fosston, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements.

Jerome Curtis Nelson was born the 7th and last child to Elvin and Anna (Lee) Nelson on September 26, 1927 on the family farm near Gonvick, Mn. His siblings include: Rosella (Disrud), Carol (Farrington), Norman Nelson, Ernest Nelson, Bernice Nelson, and Willard [Leroy] Nelson. He grew up on the farm and loved working with the animals and every aspect of the crops with his father and older brothers. When the war came along, his older brothers all enlisted in the service.

Not uncommon with several young men at his age, Jerome left High School in Fosston to enlist in the Navel service and was stationed on a ship to Japan which he often shared stories of. He was honorably discharged and returned to attend some college classes. He yearned for the life of farming and returned back to the Fosston Community. There he met and later married Kathleen Ann Sinjem on December 8, 1950. They started a family and after a few years moved out to the farm they shared for the past 48 years.

Jerome was a family man and enjoyed his six children: Jack Nelson, Stefanie Roed (Larry), Gail Pearson (Bruce) Jannae Kawalczik (Ron), Kendlynn Evje (Richard), and Forrest Nelson (Sue). He was blessed with 23 Grandchildren and 29 Great Grandchildren.

Along with farming he enjoyed every aspect of hunting and fishing. He loved to give his expertise and advice to his future generations where they have wonderful memories to hold. He was a man who had dreams and he dabbled in many fascinating endeavors. He caught the sports fever by watching his Grandchildren in everything including Football, Basketball, Wrestling, Softball and Hockey. His favorite sport was the one he was watching. He proudly attended their concerts and plays and Christmas pageants. He loved to hear his children, grandchildren, and greats sing! Jerome and Kay seemed to know every good eating place around after the children were all out of the house. They enjoyed going out with Billy and Betty Bingham, Kurt and Jane Ronning, and Nola and Clayton Abele. They were sure to make it to visit nephew, Ron Miller and his wife Jo for Friday nights fish fry. They enjoyed visiting with the waitress or the folks at the next table.

He had a deep faith in God from a young age and later felt one of his most important decisions he ever made was to accept Jesus Christ as his personal savior. He shared his faith with whoever would listen. He even felt Blessed after receiving treatments at The Roger Meris Cancer Unit in Fargo. He had prayed for a doctor with a good sense of humor and he was granted that with Dr. Ralph Levitt, his associates and nursing staff. Even though he always held life precious, he especially tried to utilize every day God Blessed him with after his diagnosis. He wanted everyone to know especially that he was thoroughly at peace and was just "waiting" on the Lord to take him the rest of the way home. He was so moved by the song "What a Gathering", because of Christ's promise for all of us. He is also survived by his maternal Aunt Cal, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is joining those who have already gone: his parents, Elvin and Anna, His brother Ernest, his sister Carol, and his little Granddaughter, Nicole who he called his "little angel." He will be sadly missed, but we're looking forward to seeing him again some day.

Pallbearers include his ten Grandsons: Christopher Nelson, Jason Nelson, Charlie Roed, Tony Roed, Joshua Pearson, Jeremiah Slyt, Kevin Slyt, Wade Evje, Matt Evje, and Levi Nelson.

Together they had three children; Dustin, born November 21, 1983; Heidi, born November 9, 1986, and Brittany, born November 13, 1990.

Danny loved NASCAR racing and everything to do with the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. Those great hunting trips were made even more special when shared with his son, Dustin. From barefoot waterskiing, to surviving a traumatic deer hunting accident, numerous racing wrecks, and too many we can't even list! He truly lived everyday in the fast lane- as if it were his last!

Danny's proudest accomplishment and what he'll always want to be known for was a dedicated father and husband. He gave his everything to them and lived with his whole heart for them. He was simply devoted to his beautiful family. There was nothing he wouldn't do for those he loved - he always made you feel so important and loved. As vibrant as that man was, he also had such a compassionate and tender side, to which we will cherish forever.
