Henrietta Bertha (Williams) Hove

1921-2010

Died: October 22, 2010

Henrietta Hove, age 89, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Friday (October 22nd) at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday (October 26th) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Aage Carlsen officiating. Interment will be in Brandsvold Cemetery, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Monday (October 25th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Henrietta Bertha Williams was born on September 16, 1921 in Walkerton, Indiana to parents John and Bertha (Robinson) Williams. She was married to John Rankert on December 25, 1939 in Walkerton and they had two children, Jerry and Brenda. She worked for many years at the Williams family meat packing plant in Walkerton. She moved to Minnesota in 1974.

Henrietta was united in marriage to Joe Hove on June 15, 1975. Together they lived in Fosston and Henrietta worked in town as a restaurant cook. In 1985, Henrietta bravely fought breast cancer and won the battle. Hank (as her family called her) enjoyed cooking, travel, dining out, playing cards and being with family and friends.

She has resided at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston since December of 2009.

Survivors include her loving husband of 35 years, Joe of Fosston; two children, Jerry (Rogene) Rankert of South Bend, IN, and Brenda Jevning Anderson of South Bend, IN; five grandchildren, Michele Jevning (Larry) Schifsky, Todd Jevning, Brett (Sharon) Rankert, Scott (Mindy) Rankert, and Tim Rankert; eight great grandchildren, Brandy, Conner, Justin, Mikayla, Kendall, Karigan, Abby and Colin; three sisters, Annabelle Osborn of Inman, KS, Maxine Hochstettler of Bremen, IN, and Emily Kollar of South Bend, IN; and three brothers, Roy of Walkerton, IN, Bernard Burdell of South Bend, IN, and George of LaPorte, IN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Huldah Ross in 2008.

Joe Rueben Hove

Joe Hove, age 94, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (December 1st) at Essentia Health Nursing Home in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday (December 6th) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Brandsvold Cemetery, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Sunday (December 5th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Military honors will be conducted by the Tangen-Walstrom American Legion Post #114 of Fosston and arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston. Joe Rueben Hove was born on July 14, 1916 to parents Ole and Lucy (Fjerstad) Hove in Queen Township. Joe was baptized and confirmed by Pastor K.O. Hildahl at Brandsvold church. Joe attended Sunnyside country school in Queen Township through the 8th grade. He worked for area neighbors and started farming with his mother and brother Otto until he was drafted in the fall of 1941. Joe served his country in Alaska for 22 months, served in the Mariana Islands, and Saipan in the anti-aircraft division. Joe was honorably discharged in December of 1945 after serving a total of 47 months. Joe bought the home farm in Queen Township from his mother in 1956. Joe was a member of the Tangen-Walstrom Post #114 in Fosston, served as Fosston Elevator board member, Queen Township constable.

Joe married Henrietta Lute on June 7, 1975 and they farmed until moving to Fosston in 1990. Joe enjoyed working with cattle and his team of horses. After retirement, Joe helped his nephew Ken during the spring and fall field work until 1997. Joe enjoyed fishing and playing cards with friends and neighbors.

Joe entered the Fosston First Care Nursing Home in November of 2007.

Surviving is one step-son, Jerry (Rogene) Rankert, and one step-daughter Brenda (Gary) Anderson of South Bend, IN; 5 step grandchildren, and 4 step great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Lynn Siverson of Fosston; Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Henrietta; his parents; his sisters, Sigrid (Lloyd) Whaley, Ruth (Ole) Underberg, Ella (Maurice) Hagemeister, Joanne (Henry) Olson, Stella (Lyle) Pitt, Ragna (Ray) Krogstad, Emma (Orlean) Swenson, Lillian Siverson; and brothers Otto (Myrtle) and Orvin (Roseann).

Pallbearers: Steve Burris, Chris Hove, Marc Hove, Wallace Olson, Walter Olson, Mike Affeldt, Wayne Hagemeister, and Todd Jevning.

Walter Howard Howe

1918-2008

Died: April 25, 2008

Walter Howe, age 89, of Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Friday, April 25th at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 30th at 2:00 PM at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine with Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Erskine and for one hour before the funeral at the church. Walter Howard Howe, the ninth child of Christian M. and Emma (Nelson) Howe, was born on July 11, 1918, at Erskine, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Rodnes Lutheran Church and attended school district 170 in rural Erskine. He became interested in electronics at an early age and became even more interested while working on military aircraft during World War II, wiring B25 bomber airplanes at Burbank, California. Upon returning to Erskine in 1945, Walter purchased the Mobil gas station, and also used part of that space to operate a radio sales and repair shop. In 1955, he sold the gas station to focus exclusively on electronics and appliances. He was the owner and operator of Howe's Radio & TV.

Walter was united in marriage to Cora Molden on September 2, 1956. From that time on, Walter and Cora owned and operated the business together until their retirement in 1986.

Walter enjoyed woodworking, baking his favorite treats in the kitchen, playing the accordion, and watching his grandsons grow up. In his younger days, he spent time at Olson's Point in Buffalo, Minnesota, and loved fishing. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine.

Walter has resided at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine since August 2005, where he passed away peacefully on April 25, 2008 at the age of 89 years.

Surviving him are his wife, Cora of Erskine, his daughter, Shirley and her husband Brice Erickson of Eagan, Minnesota, his son, Wesley and his wife Mukta of Erskine, and three grandsons, Jared, Grant, and Collin Erickson. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Maynard, Ernest, Raymond, and Stanley, and four sisters, Iva Johnson, Stella Howe, Clara Casselman, and Ruth Howe.

Anita Beverly (Howe, Hoel, Blaufuss) Hagen

1933-2008

Anita Howe-Hagen, age 73, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (May 29th) at Riverview Hospital in Crookston, Minnesota. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday (June 4th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Erskine. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, rural Erskine at a later date. Friends may call for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Anita Beverly Howe, born November 3, 1933 in Erskine, Minnesota to Ernest O. Howe and Esther (Haugen) Howe. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine. Anita attended school in Erskine and graduated in 1951.

She attended the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis until her marriage to Richard A. Hoel in 1953. The couple had two children, Rodney and Loretta.

Anita returned to Erskine and attended school for Red Cross Certification and taught First Aid/CPR in the surrounding area. She became a Cub Scout Den Mother until moving to East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

She was married to Francis Blaufuss in 1967 and the couple had three children, Lauren, Jon and Kay. When the children were older she resumed what she enjoyed; besides being a mother and grandmother; her volunteer work in the Grand Forks area.

Anita bought a van that was wheelchair accessible and drove people to medical appointments, church services or other activities. She loved playing her autoharp at nursing homes and hospitals. If there was someone in need and she was able to help, be it a ride or holding a hand and listening, she was available.

In 1982 Anita was awarded "The Greater Grand Forks Area Volunteer of the Year." It was during her volunteer work that she met Laurel Hagen and married in 1986. In April of this year Anita and Laurel renewed their vows at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center.

After the flood of 1997 took her house, she came back to Erskine to live with her mother Esther. Many that had lost everything to the flood fell into despair; for Anita it strengthened her faith and she continued to share her faith and write her gospel music until she moved to the PMCC.

Anita passed away peacefully on May 29, 2008 surrounded by children and grandchildren.

Survivors are Laurel Hagen, her sister Gloria Wilson of Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Two sons; Rodney and Jonathan; three daughters: Loretta, Lauren and Kay; and 14 grandchildren: Tyler, Dave, Beth, Crystal, Matthew, Evan, David, McKayla, Cameron, Jon Kurtis, Marissa, Ian and Mahloni.

She is also survived by nephews: Scott Kutney, and Ben Wilson. Cousins Ron Howe, Shirley Erickson, Wes Howe, Debra (Haugen)Eull, Vannie Espeseth, and many Howe and Haugens around the world.

She was preceded in death by her parents, uncles and aunts.

Arthur Fred Hubbard

1929-2011

Arthur Hubbard, age 81, of McIntosh, Minnesota, and formerly of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (April 14th) at McIntosh Senior Living. No services will be held at this time. Messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.

Arthur Fred Hubbard was born on May 17, 1929 in Hollywood, California to parents Arthur C. and Rose Elizabeth (Hartman) Hubbard. His family lived in Glendale, California and then moved to the desert area of California in 1935. He graduated from Victorville High School in Victorville, California in 1947.

Art entered the United States Marine Corps in March of 1952 during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Bonita May Ricketts on October 18, 1952. Art continued his service to his country until receiving his honorable discharge in March of 1955.

After the service, Art and Bonita made their home in Victorville. In 1971, they moved to Oregon where they lived and raised their family mainly in Woodburn and Salem. Art and Bonita owned and operated a gas station and Art did mechanic work for many years. They moved to Fosston, Minnesota in March of 2003 and then to McIntosh, Minnesota in January of 2011.

Art enjoyed model airplane flying and working on cars.

Survivors include his wife, Bonita of McIntosh, Minnesota; six children, Roy Pugh and his wife, Joyce of Redwood, Calif., Arthur Hubbard of Clearwater, Florida, John Hubbard and his wife, Evelyn of Independence, Oregon, Jeffrey Hubbard of South San Francisco, Calif., Mark Hubbard and his wife, Lisa of Hubbard, Oregon, and Kathleen Mullen and her husband, Mike of Portland, Oregon; five grandchildren, Melissa Pugh, Brian Pugh, Zachary Hubbard, Melody Price, and Teddy Koessel; two great grandchildren, Evan and Gabriel; and sister-in-law, Mary Ricketts of Fosston.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Christopher Pugh; and brother-in-law, Charles Ricketts.

Eileen Lucille (Johnson) Hustad

1924-2011

Died: July 30, 2011

Eileen L. Hustad, age 87, from Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Saturday, July 30th at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 5th at 2:00 PM at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Visitation will be held for one hour before the funeral, and interment will be at Dovre Cemetery, rural Winger, Minnesota. Eileen Lucille Johnson was born on May 12, 1924 to Carl and Anna (Pearson) Johnson at Hilland, S.D. She was baptized there and confirmed at Lima Swedish Church, rural Winger, Minnesota. She moved with her family when she was 5 years old to a farm near Fertile, Minnesota where she attended Pleasant View rural grade school and graduated from Fertile High School in 1942.

Following high school she worked for a time in Minneapolis, returning to work at Garden Valley Telephone Company until her marriage to Harry Hustad, rural Winger in 1944. Eileen and Harry were married for 47 years until he passed away in 1991. They farmed near Winger until they sold the farm and retired in 1979. During those years she was employed at Pioneer memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota for fourteen years and Activity Director at the Fosston Municipal Nursing Home in Fosston, Minnesota for eight years. She and her husband moved to Logan, Utah for eight years, returning to Fosston in 1989.

Eileen and Harry loved traveling and enjoyed the friends they made. She participated in many activities including being an active member of Dovre Free Lutheran Church in Winger and Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fosston. She was an active volunteer and director of the Fosston Senior Meals and Relay for Life. She continued to volunteer her service to Pioneer Memorial Care Center (PMCC) and was president of the resident Council. Eileen loved music, playing for church services and activities at PMCC until this last year. She kept busy with her many crafts including crocheting and later working picture puzzles.

On Saturday, July 30, 2011 Eileen passed away at Pioneer Memorial Care Center at the age of 87 years.

She is survived by one daughter, Chyrl (Dean) Bursheim of rural Erskine; one son, Harvey (Julie) Hustad of Millville, Utah; six grandchildren, Rachelle (Tad) Campbell and Roberta Bursheim both from California, Chad Hustad, Camille (Jay) Young, Ryan (Camille) Hustad and Ashley (Eric) Walker all from Utah. She is also survived by 12 great grandchildren, one cousin and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in September 1991, one infant son at birth, her two brothers and four sisters, and her parents.

Margaret Minnie (Huber) Ihrke

1930-2012

Margaret Ihrke, age 82, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (November 8th) at Cornerstone Residence Extended Care in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (November 10th) at New Journey Church in Fosston with Pastor Mark Erickson officiating. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Fosston at a later date. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Margaret Minnie Ihrke was born on March 17, 1930 to Charles and Grace (Huffman) Huber in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Her early years were spent in Wisconsin and South Dakota. Her family settled near Lengby where they farmed.

After high school, she taught at a country school in rural Grand Forks.

She married her high school sweetheart, Arles Ihrke, on June 5, 1950, and they lived in the Lengby area where they raised their family.

Margaret held several jobs in the Lengby/Fosston community including Census interviewer, librarian, clerk at Ben Franklin and the Lengby "Good Food" Store, veterinary assistant, as well as cooks helper at the Fosston Hospital and Manecke's Cafe. Margaret especially enjoyed working at the ticket booth at the Library Arts Center.

She loved serving people. She and Arles opened their home to many people over the years, and helped "back to the land" people (1970s) gain skills they needed to live a simple lifestyle. She loved working in her flowerbeds and making quilts for grandchildren.

Margaret enjoyed gardening, reading, researching natural health remedies, and soap-making -which she demonstrated at several community bicentennial events. One of her greatest passions was rearranging the house to make it more efficient.

Margaret was active at the Fosston Baptist Church (New Journey Church) and was a serving group leader. She was also a member of the Lengby Improvement Club.

Margaret is survived by Willis (Theresa) of Lengby, Minnesota; Barbara of Marion, Indiana; Bennett (Jan) of Blair, Nebraska; Diane (Fergus Falls, Minnesota); Alan (Jan) of Duluth, Minnesota; and Joyce (Peter Rairdon) of Cass Lake, Minnesota; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, sisters Marie Amberson (Jim) of Richfield, Minnesota; Carol Bradehoft of Maple Grove, Minnesota; and Kathleen Mustenon (Darryl) of Bemidji, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by husband Arles (2009), son Robert, grandson Jeremy, and brother-in-law, Marty Bradehoft.

Helena Evangeline (Johnson) Iverson

Helena Iverson, age 94, of Bagley, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (March 10th) at Cornerstone Nursing Home in Bagley. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday (March 15th) at Our Saviors Lutheran Church at Ebro Corner with the Rev. Shawn Stafford officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Sunday (March 14th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Helena Evangeline Johnson was born on February 12, 1916 in the Village of McIntosh, Minnesota to parents Edwin and Mary (Klingstrar) Johnson. She grew up and attended rural school in the McIntosh area.

Helena was united in marriage to Conrad Iverson on May 6, 1932. After their marriage, they lived on a farm west of Bagley in Clearwater County. Conrad passed away in the spring of 1973. Helena enjoyed working out of her home for Lady Slipper Designs of Bemidji for several years. She also enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and adopted grandchildren. Helena later moved from the family farm to Park View Apartments in Bagley prior to moving to the Cornerstone Nursing Home in November of 2004.

Helena enjoyed sewing, crocheting, baking, reading and was an excellent bread maker. She will always be remembered for her sense of humor, intense love for her family, her rhubarb pies, egg less Christmas cake and Christmas ornaments that she made each year for her family and the church. Helena also shared her time and talents as a volunteer at the local nursing home. She was dedicated member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church where she was active in many church functions including the ladies aide and as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Her church home and family will dearly miss Helena.

Helena passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Cornerstone Nursing Home in Bagley at the age of 94 years and 26 days.

Survivors include eleven children, Rosemary (Roger) Hill of Floodwood, Minnesota, Emily (Larry) Dostal of Chisholm, Minnesota, Marlene Norby of Pierz, Minnesota, Jeanette (Warren) Sundseth of Webster, WI, Eugene (Louella) Iverson of Bagley, Judith (Wally) Meierhofer of Pierz, Minnesota, LeRoy (Susan) Iverson of Bagley, Vernon (Denise) Iverson of Bagley, Randy (Joyce) Iverson of Oklahoma City, OK, Jeffrey Iverson of Dassel, Minnesota, and David (Elizabeth) Iverson of Bagley; 34 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Glen Johnson of Naytahwaush, Minnesota; one sister, Genevieve of Park Rapids, Minnesota. Numerous other relatives also survive.

She was preceded in death by two children, Cora Choitz and Geraldine Mackreth; her parents; brother, Raymond; sister, Muriel; stepbrother, Henry; and stepsister, Grace.

Helena will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

May Lois (Lee) Jahr

1924-2012

Died: March 21, 2012

May Jahr, age 87, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (March 21st) at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (June 9th) at the West-Kjos Funeral Chapel at 900 Summit Avenue in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Local arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine.

May Lois Lee was born on May 22, 1924 in Cuba Township, Becker County to Emma Arndt Lee and Albert Lee. She was united in marriage to Vernon A. Jahr on June 15, 1942 in Berkley, Michigan.

May and Vernon made their home in Thief River Falls for over 30 years. She was a championship golfer, bowler and curler was well as enjoying sports as a spectator. She spent most of her summers entertaining all her grandkids with fishing and water sports. She followed the TRF hockey teams for grandsons, girl's volleyball team for her granddaughter and again hockey for her great granddaughter. Being a firm believer in equal opportunity, May was thrilled that girls were progressing in sports. In her later years she was an avid card and bingo player enjoying the competition in DL. After retirement in 1984, she and Vernon lived on Lake Cormorant in DL, and winters in Las Vegas, Nevada.

She is survived by her children, Richard (Kathie) Jahr of Plymouth, Minnesota, Sherry Jahr Solheim of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Danny (Jeri) Jahr of Osceola, WI, and David (Karen) Jahr of Big Rock, IL; five grandchildren, Reime Jahr, Sara (Steve) Kelley, Steven (Val) Solheim, Chris Solheim, Leigh Ann (Craig) Kennedy; many great grandchildren; three siblings, Norma Lee Aune, Albert (Clint) Lee, and William Lee. Nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and nine siblings, Alvin Lee, Dorothy Lee Buck, Arnold Lee, Edward Lee, Robert Lee, Alfred Lee, Ivy Lee Knutson, Evelyn Lee Solum, and Florence Lee Severtson.

Hazel Lorraine (Evje, Gelen) Jallen

Hazel Jallen, age 86, from Pine River, Minnesota passed away on Friday, March 16th at Eventide Lutheran Nursing Home in Moorhead, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 22nd at 11:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Fosston, Minnesota with Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Hazel Lorraine Evje was born on March 14, 1921 to parents Hans and Lena (Dunrud) Evje in Frazee, Minnesota. Hans passed away in 1922, and Lena married Olaf Gelen in 1926. Hazel attended elementary school in Aure, Minnesota.

She married Edwin Jallen in 1940 in Aure where they lived a short while, after which they moved to Gully, Minnesota. They lived in McIntosh and Pine River, Minnesota many years where Edwin worked as a meat cutter and Hazel worked as an LPN. Hazel earned her LPN Degree in 1972.

Hazel loved making beautiful quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. After Edwin passed away in 1996, Hazel moved to Bemidji.

While living in Bemidji, Hazel spent several months constructing a Victorian Style Doll House, and she made much of the furniture. This lovely doll house was outfitted with electricity to light up the delicate lamps and light fixtures. Hazel compiled a lovely cookbook which contained hundreds of delicious recipes she tested on her husband of over 50 years, and her family. This keepsake heirloom is treasured by all.

On Friday, March 16, 2007 Hazel Jallen passed away at Eventide Lutheran Nursing Home in Moorhead, Minnesota at the age of 86 years.

Survivors include three sons, Gary (Joan) Jallen of Mesa, AZ, David (Paulette) Jallen of Ozark, AL, and Timothy (Jeanette) Jallen of Scottsdale, AZ; two daughters, Mary Beth Jallen of Scottsdale, and Susan Norquist of Glendale, AZ; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother, Louie (Vera) Gelen of Crookston, Minnesota; one sister, Florence Evje of Faribault, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin; and one sister, Olga.

Ellwood Irvin "Ell" Jenkins

Ellwood "Ell" Jenkins, age 87, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 19th at Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 26th at 3:00 PM at Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston with Pastor Mark Erickson officiating. A time of gathering for family and friends will be held for one hour before the service at the funeral home on Saturday. Interment of cremains will be at Kingo Lutheran Cemetery in Fosston, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements. Ellwood Irvin Jenkins was the youngest of seven children born to Edward and Isabell (McGee) Jenkins; born on May 31, 1926 at Leeds, North Dakota.

He attended country school in Leeds until moving to Minnesota in 1938. He graduated from Fosston High School in 1944.

He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946 and was a World War II veteran. He was a V.F.W. Member for many years, and in 1977, he was instrumental in the current location of the Lengby V.F.W. Post #2759.

Ell married Marian Miller on June 11, 1949 in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Two children were born, Michael in 1952 and Valerie in 1956.

His profession was a journeyman machinists/tool - die maker. They lived in St. Paul, Minnesota until 1973, before moving back to the Fosston area and building a new home just east on the Columbia Road. Ell and Marian started spending winter months in Yuma, Arizona in 1984, and often traveled back to the Fosston area for part of the summers. They moved back to Fosston, June of 2010, where Ell became a resident at First Care, now known as Essentia Health Living Center.

On Saturday, October 19, 2013 Ell passed away peacefully at Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston at the age of 87 years.

Ell is survived by his wife, Marian of Fosston; son, Mike of Libby, MT; daughter, Valerie of Carson City, NV; and only grandchild (grandson), Riley of Phoenix, AZ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arthur and Raymond; and four sisters, Florence Tackleson, Ida Bingham, Edna Hermanson and Ethel Miller.

Della Jenson, age 84, of Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Sunday, April 4th at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Della Isabel Karel was born on March 18, 1926 in St. Joseph, North Dakota to parents Frank and Margaret Stella (Gorman) Karel. Della grew up on a farm near LeRoy, North Dakota. Her mother passed away when she was around the age of 8 thus she learned at an early age what hard work really was, as she was the only female in the house along with her dad and four brothers. She attended country school through the eighth grade.

Della was united in marriage to Clayton F. Jenson on January 7, 1942 in Duluth, Minnesota. To this union five children were born. Daryl, Dwaine, Ardis, Allen and Curtis. Clayton and Della lived in Duluth for two years, then moved to a farm site near Neche, North Dakota. Clayton was a farmer and in 1952 they moved to Erskine, Minnesota and purchased their farm. Della worked at Johnson Nursing Home in Erskine for eight years, then went to work at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, where she worked for the next 40 years. She retired in January of 2006 at the age of 79 years due to health reasons. Her health continued to decline in the following years and she became a resident of PMCC where she lived at the time of her death.

She liked working outdoors in the yard and garden and she had a real green thumb with plants and flowers. Della belonged to several homemaker groups and she was a long time member of the United Methodist Church and ladies aid in Erskine.

Della passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2010 at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine at the age of 84 years and 17 days.

She is survived by three children, Dwaine (Geraldine), Allen (Elizabeth), and Curtis (Nancy), all of Erskine; grandchildren, Bernice, Becky, Ryan, Ann, David, Rob, Cam, Jerrod, and Ashley; great grandchildren, Marshall, Madison, Mariah, Blake, Jacob, Josie, Oliver, Kale, and Aylin.

She is also survived by her brother, Lanis (Annabelle) Karel of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton; son, Daryl; daughter, Ardis Thompson; her parents; and brothers, Willmar, Nick, and Lloyd.

Alfred Johnson, age 96, from McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, October 16th at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 21st at 10:00 AM at Mt. Carmel Free Lutheran Church in McIntosh with Rev. Dale Mellgren officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the McIntosh Community Center, and for one hour before the funeral at the church. Alfred Peter Johnson was born in Laporte, Minnesota, on November 11, 1909 to parents Jens and Hilda (Onstad) Johnson. At the age of 6, he moved with his family to Woodside Township, rural Mentor, Minnesota. He was baptized in Laporte, and confirmed at Maple Lake Lutheran Church near Mentor

He married Gladys Rudella Strand on September 8, 1929. To this union were born four children, Gordon, Arlene, Lois, and David. Gladys passed away in June 1943.

He married Adeline Bakken on October 14, 1944. To this union were born four children, Wesley, Curtis, Darrel, and Kevin. They farmed in Woodside Township until October 1958 when they moved to McIntosh, Minnesota where they owned and operated Johnson Rest Home for the elderly until August 1972. Alfred did carpentry work and worked at McIntosh Manor Nursing Home until he retired in 1986. Adeline passed away in August 1991. In June 2004, Alfred moved to Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota.

Alfred was a charter member of Mt. Carmel Free Lutheran Church in McIntosh where he served on the Church Council and as Sunday School Superintendent. He enjoyed singing in the Barber Shop Quartet and small groups in church. He also enjoyed woodworking and made several clocks for his family, and being out in the woods and cutting wood for the woodstove. Alfred was a gentle humble Christian man who loved his family and especially in later years his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On Monday, October 16, 2006 Alfred passed away at Pioneer Memorial Care Center at the age of 96 years, 11 months, and 5 days.

Survivors include his children, Gordon (Dorothy) Johnson of St. Hilaire, Minnesota, Arlene Schipper of Crookston, Minnesota, Lois (DuWayne) Schultz of Golden Valley, Minnesota, David (Barbara Lee) Johnson of Grand Prairie, TX, Wesley Johnson of Aloha, OR, Darrel (Marvelyn) Johnson of McIntosh, and Kevin (Janelle) Johnson of Gresham, OR; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; and one sister, Lena Refling of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Gladys; his second wife Adeline; infant son, Curtis D. Johnson; brothers, Ingvart, Selmer, Joe, Roy, Harry, and Ernest; infant granddaughter, Nancee Johnson; great granddaughter, Angie Berggren; and son-in-law, Bobbie Schipper.

Alpha Evangeline (Hviding) Johnson

Alpha Johnson, age 80, of McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (April 12th) at McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh. Alpha Evangeline (Hviding) Johnson was born in rural Mentor, Minnesota on February 20, 1932 to parents Kruger and Emma (Skiple) Hviding. She attended rural school in Woodside Township and graduated from Mentor High School in 1950.

She graduated from Bethesda School of Practical Nursing in 1951 and attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis.

She married Morris Johnson at Rodnes Church in rural Erskine, Minnesota on March 7, 1954. She and Morris raised four daughters and farmed north of McIntosh, Minnesota. They were active members in the McIntosh community.

Alpha worked as a nurse at Pioneer Memorial Home in Erskine for over 20 years. She also taught Sunday School, held offices on the church council, Ladies Aid, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Polk County Nursing Board.

After Morris passed away in 1981, Alpha bought a home in McIntosh. She kept active in the community and cherished friendships with many people. Traveling was a favorite pastime, having traveled to Norway, Hawaii, California, Arizona, and Florida, often with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed bus trips to everywhere from Minot to the North Shore.

Alpha sold her home and moved to Poplar Meadows senior apartments in McIntosh in 2008, then moved to First Care Senior Living in Fosston. In November 2009, she moved to McIntosh Senior Living, where she was very much at home with former coworkers at Pioneer and the other staff and volunteers who cared tenderly for her until her passing at the age of 80 years on April 12, 2012.

Surviving her are daughters, Deb (Randy) Carey of Shoreview, Minnesota; Nancy (Gary) Bergstrom of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; Darlene (Dan) Dierkes of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota; and Carolyn (Scott) Solberg of Edina, Minnesota. She also leaves behind her brother, Kenneth (Luverne) Hviding of Crookston, and her grandchildren: Nicole (Keith) Treague, Holly and Abby Bergstrom; Ashley and Taylor Dierkes; and Ben, Zach and Anna Solberg, as well as nephews, a nice, and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Morris.

She will be missed by her many friends, neighbors and former co-workers.

Pallbearers will be Randy Carey, Gary Bergstrom, Dan Dierkes, Scott Solberg, Taylor Dierkes, and Keith Treague.

Betty JoAnn (Swanson) Johnson

Betty JoAnn Swanson was born on August 19, 1943 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Oscar and Anna (Tangen) Swanson. She attended school in Hill River Township, rural McIntosh. As a teenager she lived with her grandmother in McIntosh and graduated from McIntosh High School. She went on to attend Aaker's Business College in Fargo, North Dakota. After college Betty worked at the Farmers State Bank in Fosston for a few years.

Betty was married to Ernie Johnson on February 19, 1967. They lived near Crookston, Minnesota until 1978 then moved to rural Mentor, Minnesota.

She loved gardening, attending church, reading the Bible, and going to Bible Study.

On Wednesday, February 13, 2013 Betty passed away unexpectedly at her home near Mentor at the age of 69 years.

She is survived by her husband, Ernie; three children, Michael Johnson of Mentor, Lori Johnson of Shawano, WI and Mark Johnson of Crookston, Minnesota; and one grandson, Nicholas Johnson of Crookston.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister Sandra McClelland; and one brother, Jerome Swanson.

Clifford George Johnson

Clifford Johnson, age 94, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Friday (July 31st) at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Clifford George Johnson was born on July 10, 1915 in Woodside Township, rural Erskine, Minnesota to parents Gust and Carrie (Casperson) Johnson. He attended Maple Grove and Sarah View country schools.

He was united in marriage to Lorene Heideman on September 22, 1934. They had five children, Roger, Sharol, Janet, an infant daughter who died at birth, and Vern. Clifford farmed most of his life in Knute Township, raising certified russet potatoes with Reuben Anderson. He retired in 1978 and moved into Erskine. He then worked for Polk County Parks for over 20 years. He lived in Erskine until November of 2006 when he moved to the Pioneer Memorial Care Center.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter, hunting deer until he was 90 years old. He and his wife, Lorene, sang at many occasions in the community.

Clifford passed away on Friday, July 31, 2009 at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center at the age of 94 years and 21 days.

He is survived by his children, Roger (Marlene) Johnson, Sharol (Sharon) Johnson and Janet (Bennett) Hamre, all of Erskine; and Vern (Patti) Johnson of Grygla, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren, Randy (Michelle) Johnson, Kim (Paul) Mahlen, Denice (Allen) St. Michel, Mikki Johnson, Steve Johnson, Stacy (Robert) Knudson, Sheila (Kip) Fontaine, Shawn (Ann) Hamre, Kent (Angie) Hamre, Heidi (Eddie) Gose, Mandi (Ronnie) Lund, Carrie Johnson, and Bret Johnson; 24 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Holt and Lorraine Frantz; sister-in-law, Ruby Heideman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorene in 1995; infant daughter; grandson, Scot Johnson; brother, Wallace; and sister, Alice Farder; sister-in-law, Margaret Johnson; brothers-in-law, Ogden Farder, George Holt and Merle Frantz.

Eleanor Clarice Holm was born on November 1, 1927 in Hill River Township, rural Fosston, Minnesota to parents Erick and Clara (Bjerke) Holm. She grew up near Fosston and attended the Pine Hill School in Columbia Township. She then worked in the Clearbrook and Gonvick area before moving to Kansas City where she helped care for family.

She was united in marriage to Marvin Johnson on March 13, 1951 in Inglewood, California. They resided in Fosston until moving to Lusk, Wyoming. They returned to Fosston where Eleanor worked and raised her five children.

She was a long-time faithful member of Bethel Assembly Church in Fosston. Eleanor was well-known in the area for her lefse. She loved making lefse, but her passion was her love for Jesus and her family. She will be missed by many.

Eleanor passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota at the age of 80 years.

Survivors include five children, Bryan (Wanda) of Fosston, Bruce (Michelle) of Fosston, Bonnie (Greg) Petry of Moorhead, Minnesota, Doug (Nanci) of Vancouver, WA, and Marlene (Kenton) Sorenson of Madison, WI; one step-daughter, Pam Papke of Milwaukee, WI; 16 grandchildren, Tami and Jen; Nikki (Erik) Berg, Aaron, and Aanders; Lisa, Laura, and Scott; Valisha, Jamison, Molli, Ashley, Clarissa and Andrew; Christopher (Jamie) and Erika; and one great granddaughter, Emily; sisters-in-law, Emma Holm of Clearbrook, Minnesota and Helen Holm of Eagle River, AK; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; parents; and four brothers: Elmer, Arnold, Henry and Parnell.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Grandma Eli's grandchildren.

Evelyn Esther (Christianson) Johnson

Evelyn E. Johnson, age 100, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday (February 23rd) at First Care Living Center in Fosston. Evelyn Esther Christianson was born on June 21, 1912 in Woodside Township, rural Erskine, Minnesota to parents Carl and Josephine (Strand) Christianson. She grew up in Woodside Township and was baptized and confirmed in Rodnes Lutheran Church and attended Maple Grove Country School, completing the eighth grade.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Oscar A. Johnson on June 20, 1935 at Maple Bay, Minnesota. They moved to the Herman Johnson Homestead in Eden Township where they raised three sons, Milo, Owen, and Darrell. In 1951 they moved to Kalispell, Montana. In 1953 they purchased a farm from Nels and Nettie Emerson and moved back to Minnesota. They continued to live on this farm in Eden Township until Oscar passed away on March 8, 1972 as a result of severe rheumatoid arthritis.

For over 30 years Evelyn lived by herself on the farm in the summer and in Fosston, Minnesota during the winter. She was a wonderful cook and baker. She fed her family and the neighborhood with food for the stomach and the soul. She was afraid of storms, bears in the yard, and she once killed a skunk with a hoe.

Evelyn enjoyed making doilies and afghans and were gifts she gave to family and friends all over the world. She was a faithful member of Lund Lutheran Church and Lund Ladies Aid of Gully, Minnesota.

In 2000 Darrell and Cindy purchased the farm from Evelyn where Cindy continues to live and maintain Evelyn's Legacy.

On Saturday, February 23, 2013 Evelyn passed away at First Care Living Center in Fosston at the age of 100 years, eight months and two days.

She is survived by her sons, Milo of Gully and Owen (Mary Ann) of Lindstrom, Minnesota; daughter-in-law, Cindy Johnson of Gully; grandchildren, Rhonda (Lowell) Pfiffner, Lori (Greg) Gattis and Shannon Johnson; eight great-grandchildren; and 19 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oscar; son, Darrell; grandchildren, Jon Johnson, David Johnson and Julie Callaway; brothers, William Christianson and Martin Christianson; and sisters, Jennie Moren, Hilda (Erickson) Skanson and Gladys Thompson.

Evelyn Thea McGladrey was born on January 6, 1915 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to parents Alexander David and Louise (Ross) McGladrey. At an early age she moved with her parents to Ebro, Minnesota. She attended school in Ebro through the eighth grade. She then attended and graduated from Leonard High School in Leonard, North Dakota on May 26, 1933. She graduated Salutatorian and was awarded a scholarship to Jamestown College. Evelyn was unable to continue on with her education and returned to Ebro to work.

Evelyn married Clyde Russel Johnson on June 23, 1939 at the parsonage in Bagley, Minnesota. To this union three daughters were born; Elaine, Lynette, and Lois.

She worked as Postmaster in Ebro from January 1, 1943 until her retirement on June 20, 1975. She moved to Fosston in 1982.

Evelyn loved music especially listening to son-in-law, Tom Kipp play the piano. She sang with the Ambassadors of Praise and with choir and ladies group at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fosston.

She enjoyed sewing and embroidery, making quilts and care bears. She enjoyed reading especially her Bible. She cherished her family and had a strong faith in God. She was active in church and volunteered and took part in many activities at the Embassy in Fosston.

Evelyn enjoyed travel and took part in many tours and visited her daughter and son-in-law in Tucson often.

Evelyn went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Essentia Health Long Term Care in Fosston at the age of 95 years.

Survivors include her daughters, Elaine (Tom) Kipp of Circle Pines, Minnesota, Lynette (Richard) Miller of Fosston, and Lois (Steve) Sorenson of Tucson, AZ; her grandchildren, Tammy (Lonny) Carlson, Nancy (Jeff) Stewart, Allan (Veronica) Miller, Lori (Cory) Carlson, Michael Kipp, Sheldon (Rhiana) Kipp, Kayla (David) Lisowski, and Kenton (Allison) Kipp; and 13 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Clyde Johnson on March 2, 1978.

Gertrude Corrine Ovidia (Lerfald) Johnson

Gertrude Johnson, age 79, from rural Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, December 8th at Essentia Hospital in Fosston, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 13th at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in McIntosh, Minnesota with Rev. Mark Peske officiating. Gertrude Corrine Ovidia Lerfald was born on October 5, 1931 to Carl and Anna (Jorde) Lerfald at home in Badger Township, north of Erskine, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Saron Lutheran Church also in Badger Township. Gertrude attended school at Erskine High School and graduated in 1949.

She was united in Marriage to Roy Curtis Johnson on April 12, 1950 at United Lutheran Church (now Grace Lutheran Church) in Erskine. Roy and Gertrude farmed and raised horses and registered Brown Swiss cattle northwest of Erskine. Gertrude worked at home raising her children, gardening, and helping on the farm. She loved to cook and bake many goodies for her children and grandchildren including her famously loved bread. Gertrude loved the many simple things in life including spending time visiting with her family.

Gertrude passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at Essentia Hospital in Fosston, Minnesota at the age of 79 years, two months, and three days following a battle with cancer.

Survivors include two sons Curtis of Lawrence, Kansas, and Dave (Karen) of Erskine, Minnesota; one daughter, Joan Johnson of Moorhead, Minnesota; one granddaughter, Korrine (Jared) Olson of Moorhead, Minnesota; one grandson, Christian Johnson of Thief River Falls, Minnesota; two brothers, Gordon Lerfald of Colorado and Robert (Cherie) Lerfald of rural Erskine, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Johnson and her parents Carl and Anna (Jorde) Lerfald.

Harvey Arthur Johnson

Harvey A. Johnson, age 92 of Fosston and formerly from McIntosh, Minnesota passed away on Thursday, January 16th at his home in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 23rd at 11:00 AM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in McIntosh with Rev. Gordon Syverson officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the funeral at the church on Thursday, and interment will be at Our Saviors Lutheran Cemetery in McIntosh. The Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home serving McIntosh is in charge of the arrangements.

Harvey Arthur Johnson was born to Arhtur O. and Inez Louise (Edwards) Johnson on April 25, 1921 at McIntosh, Minnesota. He lived near McIntosh and attended school in District 163, the MaCarthy School. They then moved to the Brekke place. Highway 2 was a gravel road at that time. Harvey watched them working to change the gravel to concrete when he was six or seven years old. Then they moved to the Ludeman farm and lived there until he finished grade school and moved northwest of McIntosh. He hauled potatoes to the Iron Range and Duluth and drove for MM&O out of Fosston, Minnesota.

In September of 1942 he entered the Army and went to Camp Crowder Missouri where he went to school to be a radio operator in the Signal Corps. He then left the United States and went to North Africa and served there for sometime before moving on to Italy with the 34th Infantry. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to McIntosh.

Harvey was united in marriage to Lavine Swanson on June 29, 1946 and they farmed and milked dairy cattle for many years near McIntosh before moving to Fosston. Their son Wayne was born in 1949.

On Thursday, January 16, 2014 Harvey passed away at his home in Fosston at the age of 92 years.

He is survived by his wife Lavine of Fosston; and nieces and nephews, Marion Vanderhoof, Rita Laughter, Patricia Perez, Alan Johnson, Karen Johnson and June Cahoon

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Wayne in 1968; and brother, Ernest.

Ione Jeanette (Sheggrud) Johnson

Ione Johnson, age 89, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (November 14th) at First Care Living Center in Fosston. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday (November 21st) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Ione Jeanette Sheggrud was born on June 26, 1924 in Clearbrook, Minnesota. She graduated from Fosston High School and as a teenager was voted the county queen.

She was united in marriage to Sidney Johnson in 1945 while Sidney was in the service. To this union were born three children, Yvonne "Vonnie," Craig, and Deaun. Early in their marriage, Sid and Ione traveled to Texas following the crop harvest back to Minnesota doing combining. Ione drove truck while Sid combined. Except for a period from 1954 to 1957 when they lived in Thief River Falls, Ione and Sid lived and raised their family in Fosston. In addition to raising her family, Ione also helped Sid in his accounting business. Sid passed away on January 26, 1989.

Ione was a wonderful cook and baker and a talented painter and singer. She truly had a heart of gold and a caring soul. She was an active and faithful servant of Hope Lutheran Church, singing in the church choir and serving with the Women of Hope. She will be dearly missed.

Ione passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at First Care Living Center in Fosston at the age of 89 years, four months and 19 days.

She is survived by a nephew, Bob (Becky) Johnson of Bemidji; niece, Diane Dunlap of New Germany, Minnesota; great nieces, Amanda (Adam) Lukes of Bemidji, Alissa (Matthew) Gassen of Denver, CO, and Annika Johnson of Bemidji; special friend, Karen Schultz of Fosston and her children, Katie and Cody Fjerstad; and many other good friends in the community.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her three children.

Jay Allen Johnson, born Nov 4th, 1965 in Mayville, North Dakota.

Jay has two children Royce of Fargo, North Dakota and Darian of Fosston, Minnesota. Jay also leaves a wife Donna of Fosston, and three step children that lovingly called him DAD, Ashlyn (Matt) of Williston, ND, Kassiah of Fosston, and Ru of Fosston. Jay leaves the biggest joy of his life a grand daughter that called him Papa, Teagan is Ashlynn's daughter. Jay also leaves a step son Josh Houska (Kayla) and grandson Logan.

He is survived by his parents Bruce and Bev Johnson of Harwood, North Dakota, two brothers and five sisters, Jerad (Melinda) of Dilworth, MN, Jesse (Diana) of Watford City, North Dakota, Dawn (Tim) of West Fargo, Tasha (Eric) of Harwood ND. Misty and Sammie Jo both of Billings MT, and Laramie of Great Falls MT. Also Kitty and Luverne Lomen of Langby MN.

Jay also has many nieces and nephews that knew when Uncle Jay was around laughs, smiles and plenty of fun was to be had by all.

Anyone who knew Jay knew his greatest joy in life was kids of all ages and it didn't matter who's kid it was he always tried to make them laugh and smile.

Jay loved to play and watch any and all sports, but his greatest love of all was the Minnesota Vikings. He could tell you about the Vikings from back when they were known as the Purple People Eaters right up to today's team. No matter how great or sorry the team was he was a True Fan.

Jay was Graduate of Central Cass High School in 1985, in Casselton ND. He Then moved on to the working force to support and raise his new family in the place he called HOME Fosston MN.

Larry Curtis Johnson

Larry Johnson, age 63, of Winger, Minnesota passed away on Thursday, July 31st at his residence near Winger. Memorial services will be held on Friday, August 8th at 11:00 AM at Union Lake Free Lutheran Church, rural Winger with Rev. Jerome Nikunen officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the service at the church and interment of cremains will be at Lima Cemetery. Larry Curtis Johnson was born in Fosston, Minnesota on June 13, 1945 to parents Albin and Madeline (Goodrie) Johnson. He was raised on the family farm in Garden Township, rural Winger, Minnesota, which was homesteaded by his great grandfather in 1881.

Larry was drafted into the service by the U.S. Army in January, 1968. He spent his two year tour in Vietnam and was honorably discharged January, 1970, after which he returned home to farm.

Larry retired from farming fulltime due to ill health and pursued his interests in hunting and trapping. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved planting and harvesting trees and boat rides on his lake to enjoy a majestic pair of nesting swans. Larry greatly appreciated the wildlife surrounding his cabin, woods, and lake and often discovered new creatures he had never seen before and shared joyful moments discussing them and other new things he had learned in books and documentaries.

He was a vigilant son who rarely went a day without spending an evening watching T.V. programs with his mom and reminiscing about old friends, family, and neighbors. Larry was a quiet presence in the neighborhood who was always willing to help out a neighbor in need. He will be greatly missed.

On Thursday, July 31, 2008 Larry Johnson passed away at his residence near Winger at the age of 63 years.

Survivors include his mother, Madeline Johnson of rural Erskine, Minnesota; two nieces, Tammy Sandhu` and Kim Rose; and great niece, Cheyenne Munuwar.

He was preceded in death by his father, Albin Johnson; and one sister, Renee Rose.

Larry Johnson was born on July 20, 1937 in Fosston, Minnesota the son of Oscar and Alvina (Gudvangen) Johnson. He grew up in Queen Township, rural Fosston, went to the Lade Country School and graduated from Fosston High School in 1955. That same year he entered the United States Navy and trained in the Seabees as a heavy equipment operator. He was stationed in Illinois, California, Alaska, Japan and Guam. He received his honorable discharge in 1960.

In 1962, he was united in marriage to Cleone Smith and they lived in Minneapolis. While there he attended welding school and worked at that until 1971. Since then he operated a dairy farm north of Fosston until his retirement in 1999. His interests were farming, antique machinery, and traveling. The traveling included much of the United States, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii.

Larry passed away on Friday, January 19, 2007 at his home after a courageous six year battle with cancer at the age of 69 years, five months and 30 days.

Survivors include his wife, Cleone of rural Fosston; two sisters, Elaine Westre of Brainerd, Minnesota and Mariann (Jack) Enfield of Brainerd, Minnesota; mother-in-law, Ruth Holman of Fosston; sisters-in-law, Lois Johnson of Ham Lake, Minnesota, Darlene Novacek of East Grand Forks, Minnesota and Shirley Smith of Angora, Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Myrl (Ilene) Smith of McIntosh, Minnesota, Franklin (Sharon) Smith of Monticello, Minnesota and Francis (Marilyn) Smith of Bemidji, Minnesota and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Floyd Johnson; and two brothers-in-law, Clayton Smith and Laverne Smith.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Sharon Andrews and Wade Andrews, David and Diane Anderson, Todd Johnson, Tami and Justin Oestreich and all other family.

Madeline (Goodrie) Johnson

Madeline was born on December 18, 1919 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Her parents were Fred and Alma (Barlund) Goodrie. She grew up with her Grandparents on the family farm south of Erskine, Minnesota in Garden Township and attended rural school in that area.

Madeline was united in marriage to Albin Johnson on October 22, 1939. Following their marriage, they lived for a short time near Union Lake before returning to the family homestead where she lived out the rest of her life. Her husband, Albin, passed away on December 4, 1996.

Madeline was a devoted member of Union Lake Free Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. Her family had been a member of Lima Church prior to its closing. She enjoyed quilting and helped make many quilts for the church's Fall Sale where she thrived on providing comic relief while passing out bidding items. Most of all, Madeline loved visiting with family and friends to whom she was an energetic joy and shining light.

She passed away, peacefully, on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at her home with her family at her side at the age of 89 years.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Tammy Sandhu of Erskine; and Kim Rose of Duluth, Minnesota; and one great granddaughter, Cheyenne Munawar of Erskine.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two children, Carolyn Renee Rose and Larry Johnson.

She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Olaf Johnson

Olaf Johnson, age 91, from rural Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Monday, May 14th at First Care Hospital in Fosston. Olaf Johnson was born on February 2, 1916 to parents Carl and Nora (Rude) Johnson at Fertile, Minnesota where he grew up and attended rural school.

During World War II Olaf worked in Newfoundland on a military base as a painter for the U.S. Government. After the war, he went to Minneapolis and continued work as a painter. Olaf also worked for REA in North Dakota. In 1949, he went into farming with his brother, Walter in Gregory Township, Mahnomen County, Minnesota. Olaf was later joined in the farming operation by brothers, John and Rudolph.

On June 29, 1957 Olaf was united in marriage to Elvera Anderson in Crookston, and they made their home on the farm in Gregory Township. Elvera passed away on October 4, 1990. Olaf remained on the farm until April 2006 when he entered Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota.

Olaf was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston, Minnesota. He loved farming, working on machinery , and building tractors. After Olaf retired, he played cello with his brothers, John and Kenneth at the state fair and at various other places.

On Monday, May 14, 2007 Olaf passed away at First Care Hospital in Fosston at the age of 91 years.

Survivors include one son, Mark (Sharon) of Fosston; one son-in-law, Mike Roragen of Bejou, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Carrie (Paul) Chillman, Rachael Parrish, Christopher Roragen, Angela (Casey) Bauer, and Bridget Baumgartner; six great grandchildren; four brothers, Rudolph, and John of Fosston, Walter (Lucille) of Crookston, Minnesota, and Kenneth (Verla) of Fertile; as well as many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elvera; two daughters, Deborah Roragen, and Catherine Baumgartner; and five brothers, Hjalmer, Leonard, Albert, Alfred, and Elmer.

Orvis Jerome Johnson

Orvis Jerome Johnson "OJ," age 85, of Fertile, Minnesota passed away on Friday, December 1st at Rosewood on Broadway Nursing Home in Fargo, North Dakota. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 6th at 11:00 AM at Faaberg Lutheran Church in Rindahl, Minnesota with Pastor Jeff McCracken officiating. Orvis Jerome Johnson was born on May 8th, 1921 to parents Gilbert and Ida (Refling) Johnson in Garden Township, rural Fertile, Polk County, Minnesota.

He was baptized, confirmed, a choir member and a lifetime member of Faaberg Lutheran Church in Rindahl, Minnesota.

He attended Willow Creek Country School. After finishing school Orvis farmed with his father and played clarinet in the Fertile Concert Band.

On October 2, 1943, he married Olga Hagen. They lived on Orvis's home farmstead, rural Fertile. They continued to farm and Orvis also worked road construction as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1980.

Orvis enjoyed reading, playing his electric organ, hunting, ice fishing, snowmobiling and working in his shop.

On Friday, December 1, 2006 Orvis passed away at the age of 85 years at Rosewood on Broadway Nursing Home in Fargo, North Dakota, where he had lived since April 13, 2006.

He is survived by his wife, Olga of Fargo; three daughters, Faye and her husband Verdell Olson of Fertile, Kathleen and her husband Rick Stuhaug of Fertile, and Patricia and her husband Mark Polley of Winger, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Michelle (Olson) and her husband Dan O'shea, Chad Olson, Troy Olson and his wife Mary, JoDee (Olson) and her husband Travis Jensrud, Shawn Stuhaug and his wife Tanya, Nicole (Stuhaug) and her husband Nathan Mark, and Shannon Polley and her fiance Josh Brevik; and twelve great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Ralph.

Palma Caroline Horn was the sixth daughter born to parents Andrew and Selma (Engman) Horn in Grygla, Minnesota on March 22, 1920. She was baptized and confirmed at Valli Lutheran Church in Grygla.

She attended a small country school in Lee Township in Beltrami County. She moved to Minneapolis as a teenager with her mother after her father passed away and attended Ramsey High School, Northwestern Bible College and Miller Vocational School where she became an LPN.

Palma had been involved in health care for over 60 years. Prior to opening the Johnson Rest Homes in Erskine and Fosston, she had worked in hospitals and nursing homes including Bemidji Lutheran Hospital, Fosston Hospital, St. Vincent in Crookston, Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Pierce County Hospital in Tacoma, Washington and the Pioneer Memorial Home. While being the owner and administrator of the Johnson Rest Homes she served on several committees including the Minnesota C.A.R.E. Home Association, Erskine Health Board and Agassiz Health Planning Council. Some of the highlights of Palma's career have included attending special days with legislators in Minnesota and Washington D.C. She also attended many of the state and national conventions for The Care Providers of Minnesota. In 2000 she was honored with the Care Providers Life Achievement Award at a ceremony in Minneapolis.

She was united in marriage to Harry Clifford Johnson in Minneapolis on April 9, 1944. They lived in Minneapolis, Tacoma, WA., Mentor and moved to Erskine in 1955.

Palma was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she was an honorary member of the WELCA. She also was awarded her 50 year membership from the Sons of Norway.

Palma enjoyed traveling and went on many family vacations in the United States and Canada. Her travels also included trips to Hawaii, Norway, London, Scotland and France.

Palma passed away peacefully into heaven on October 19, 2010 at her daughter's home in Rogers, Minnesota at the age of 90 years, seven months and 28 days.

Palma will be sadly missed by her three daughters, Shirlee (Bob) Magnusson of Rogers/Erskine, Minnesota, Lynnae (Drew) Larson of Crookston, Minnesota, and Dianne (Terry) Boyum of Mentor, Minnesota.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Robin (Marlow) Roberts of Champlin, Minnesota, Suzanne (Brad) Slawson of Ham Lake, Minnesota, Steven (Misty) Magnusson of Wichita, KS, Shea (Geri) Boyum of Moorhead, Minnesota, Blaise Larson (Special friend Jean Pierce) of Sacramento, CA, Anthony Boyum, Brandon Boyum and TaraAnn Boyum all of Waseca, Minnesota, Nicholas Boyum (Elizabeth Berg) of Redwood Falls, Minnesota; 7 great grandsons, Bradley and Jesse Slawson of Ham Lake, Minnesota, Derek Roberts of Champlin, Minnesota, Clay Below of Waseca, Minnesota, Marek and Sedrek Magnusson of Wichita, KS, and Logan Berg of Redwood Falls, Minnesota; one great granddaughter, Megan Roberts of Champlin, Minnesota, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Her husband Harry Clifford Johnson; her parents; five sisters Agnes, Ethel, Myrtle, Sophia and Stella; one nephew Arthur Aaserud; and one great niece Vickii Lustig preceded Palma in death.

Honorary Pallbearers: Ogden Farder, Jr, Robert Lerfald, Joe Sandberg, Jim Aagenes and Palma's nephews.

Roger Wayne Johnson

Roger Johnson, age 77, of rural Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Monday (October 21st) at Essentia Hospital in Fosston. A memorial visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. service and time of remembrance on Friday (October 25th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. Roger Wayne Johnson was born on November 12, 1935 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents James William and Hilda (Gudvangen) Johnson. He grew up in Queen Township on the farm that his grandfather homesteaded. He attended the Lade country school through the eighth grade and then graduated from Fosston High School in 1953. While he was in high school, Roger played basketball, football and baseball.

He entered the United States Army in July of 1955 and was stationed in Fort Hamilton, New York. He received his honorable discharge in July of 1957. After his time in the military, he began work on the ore boats out of Duluth.

He was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Naas on January 26, 1963. Together, Roger and Gwen lived and raised their family in Crookston. Roger worked for the Polk County Highway Department from September 1, 1966 until his retirement on January 28, 1994. At that time, he returned home to his roots in Queen Township.

Roger was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed all sports, especially the Vikings, Twins and Gophers. He also enjoyed driving around the countryside looking for deer. Most of all, Roger treasured his family. His wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will all miss him dearly.

Roger passed away on Monday, October 21, 2013 at Essentia Hospital in Fosston with his family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 77 years.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Gwen of Fosston; four children, Eileen (Louis) Obot of Omro, WI, Denise (Robert) Staehnke of Crookston, Kevin (Michelle) Johnson of Baxter, Minnesota, and Keith Johnson of Moorhead, Minnesota; grandchildren, Matthew (Emilee) Staehnke, Ben Staehnke, Tommy (Beth) Staehnke, Trevor Staehnke, Landon Staehnke, Max Staehnke, Kyle Johnson, Katie Johnson, Daniel Obot, Justin Obot, and Amanda Obot; and two great granddaughters, Adley and Clara Staehnke.

He is also survived by four siblings, Betty Hoff, Marilyn Stephen, Arnold (Sandy) Johnson, and Clarence Johnson; sister-in-law, Nora Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Wendell Johnson.

Honorary Pallbearers will be John Juvrud, Robert Carlstrom, Ivan Fisher, Kurt Slettvedt, Bill Turk, Eddie Desrosier, Jim Cormican, John Handyside, and Bill Malwitz.

Roy Curtis Johnson

Roy C. Johnson, 86, of rural Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (January 9th) at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (January 13th) at Immanuel Lutheran Church in McIntosh, Minnesota with the Rev. Arvid Salvhus officiating. Interment will be in First English Lutheran Cemetery, rural Mentor, Minnesota. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Friday (January 12th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Erskine. Roy Curtis Johnson was born on June 24, 1920 to Herbert and Anna (Olson) Johnson in Badger Township, northwest of Erskine, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at First English Lutheran Church in Mentor, Minnesota. Roy attended country school in Badger Township and farmed with his father until July of 1942 when he left for the war. He served his country in the United States Air Force during World War II where he served as a radio and airplane mechanic in the Pacific Islands. He received his honorable discharge in July of 1945 with the rank of Corporal and returned home.

He was united in marriage to Gertrude Corrine Lerfald on April 12, 1950 at United Lutheran Church (now Grace Lutheran Church) in Erskine. Roy and Gertrude farmed and raised horses and registered Brown Swiss cattle on a portion of land northwest of Erskine that Roy had purchased from his father. He milked cows for many years before he began to raise horses.

Roy loved his horses and his farm and especially enjoyed working on the farm with his son, Dave.

Roy passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at his home farm in Badger Township at the age of 86 years, six months and 16 days.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude of rural Erskine; two sons, Curtis of Lawrence, KS and Dave (Karen) of Erskine; one daughter, Joan Johnson of Moorhead, Minnesota; one granddaughter, Korrine Johnson of Grand Forks, North Dakota; one grandson, Christian Johnson of Thief River Falls, Minnesota; one brother, Truman (Dorothy) Johnson of McIntosh, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Johnson of Erskine; and many nieces nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Marvin Johnson; and one sister, Agnes (Johnson) Hovland.

Pallbearers will be David Johnson, Merlyn Alme, Leslie Alme, Val Carver, Randy Lee, and Ray Hovland.

Rudolph Martin Johnson

1912-2012

Rudolph Johnson, age 99, of rural Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, July 29th at Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 3rd at 11:00 AM at Concordia Lutheran Church in Fertile with Pastor Dan Watland officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the funeral at the church on Friday, and interment will be in South Side Cemetery, rural Fertile. The Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements.

Rudolph Martin Johnson was born December 23, 1912 in Garfield Township, rural Fertile, Minnesota to Carl and Nora (Rude) Johnson. Rudy attended grade school at District #72, near his home in rural Fertile. He served his country during WWII from 1942-1945, in the United States Army as a surgical technician. After his honorable discharge, Rudy returned home and worked with his brothers logging and operating a portable saw mill and working for area farmers.

In 1948, Rudy and his brothers, Johnny and Olaf started farming in Gregory Township, east of Bejou, Minnesota. He lived there with his brother, Johnny until he entered the Fair Meadow Nursing Home at Fertile in September 2007.

Rudy and his brothers were known to be a one family softball team, and he enjoyed working in the woods and working with wood.

He is a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and the Yggdrasil I.O.G.T. (International Organization of Good Templars), an organization to promote temperance, peace and brotherhood.

On Sunday, July 29, 2012 Rudolph passed away at Fair Meadow Nursing Home at the age of 99 Years.

He is survived by one brother, Kenneth (Verla) Johnson "the youngest" of Gary, Minnesota; a special nephew, Mark (Shari) Johnson of Fosston, Minnesota; and several other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by eight brothers, Olaf, Albert, Alfred, Elmer, Hjalmer, Leonard, Walter and Johnny; and two special nieces, Debbie Roragen and Cathy Baumgartner.

Samuel Keith Johnson, infant son of Tim and Laura Johnson of rural Bagley, was born and died on Saturday (March 8th) at Innovis Hospital in Fargo. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday (March 14th) at Trinity Free Lutheran Church, rural McIntosh with the Rev. Dale Mellgren officiating. Steven Clark Johnson

Steven Johnson, age 59, from rural Fosston, Minnesota passed away suddenly from an unexpected illness on Wednesday, December 9th at his home near Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 14th at 2:30 PM at Poplar Lake Lutheran Church, rural Fosston with Rev. John Anderson officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Poplar Lake Lutheran Church, and there will also be reviewal for one hour before the funeral at the church. Steven Clark Johnson was born on March 2, 1950 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Jerome "Bud" and Grace (Benson) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston. He grew up in Fosston and graduated from Fosston High School in 1968.

Steve joined the United States Navy, serving for four years as a radio operator on the USS Goldsboro off the coast of Vietnam. After his military service, Steve attended the National School of Meat Cutting in Toledo, Ohio and then the University of Minnesota Crookston for two years.

He was united in marriage to Kathleen Olson on May 3, 1975 at Poplar Lake Lutheran Church near Fosston. They lived in Fosston until 1996 when they moved to their new home in Columbia Township. He has worked for Sun Opta Food Products in Fosston for the past 20 years.

He was a member of Poplar Lake Lutheran Church, and served on the church council. Steve had his pilots license and loved aviation. He enjoyed golf, hunting, gardening, movies, watching football, wine making, music, cooking, and outdoor games. He also enjoyed playing video games with Travis and Tyler, and spending time with family and friends. He had a very special relationship with his grandson, Joshua.

Steve passed away suddenly from an unexpected illness on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at his home near Fosston at the age of 59 years.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen of Fosston; daughter, Tracy (Greg) Hendrickson of Fosston; sons, Travis of Sartell, Minnesota and Tyler of Fosston; grandson, Joshua Lee of Fosston; his parents, Jerome "Bud" and Grace Johnson of Fosston; mother-in-law, Mercedes Beckstrom of Fosston; brothers, Dr. Mike (Gaynell) Johnson of Watertown, SD and Tim (Karen) Johnson of Grand Forks, North Dakota; brother and sisters-in-law, Mike (Karen) Olson of Fosston, JoAnn (Tom) Warner of Roseau, Minnesota, Gerald (Chris) Beckstrom of Fosston. Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Miranda Lee; son-in-law, Patrick Lee; sister, Deborah Johnson; brother, Mark Johnson; and his paternal and maternal grandparents.
