Ethel "Faye" (LaVoi) Hedin

1926-2014

Faye Hedin, age 87 from Gonvick, Minnesota passed away on Sunday, May 11th at the Good Samaritan Home in Clearbrook, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (May 16th) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fosston. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery-Hansville, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Thursday (May 15th) and for one hour prior to the service on Friday. All visitation will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fosston. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.

Ethel Faye Hedin was born at Fosston, Minnesota on December 14, 1926 to parents William A. LaVoi and Violet Thayer LaVoi. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's church in Fosston. She was a graduate of Fosston High School.

Faye was united in marriage to John A. Hedin on February 6, 1945. To this union one son was born. Faye attained her RN degree from Graham Hospital Nursing School in Canton, Illinois. She also held a Bachelor of Science degree, Master of Arts degree and completed additional course work towards her Doctoral Degree at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Faye was an instructor at the Graham Hospital School of Nursing for four years. She was also a professor of psychology at Spoon River College in Canton, Illinois for 26 years, retiring in 1985. She was a life member of the National Education Association, a girl scout leader, member of the Board of Directors of the Fulton County Mental Health Center, and served on the Executive Committee College Faculty Association for the State of Illinois. She was a member of the Lambda Chi Omega and Delta Kappa Gamma Sororities. After retirement she and John divided their time between their farm in Gonvick and home in Indian Lake Estates, Florida.

Faye had many interests. She was an avid reader, golfer and traveler. She visited more than 70 countries and enjoyed meeting the families of her former students. She enjoyed painting rural Minnesota landscapes, especially old barns and churches. She also enjoyed rosemaling with the Norda Gonvick Rosemalers. Each spring Faye and John looked forward to sucker spearing. Faye was an avid deer hunter, seldom missing a season. John told the story of Faye killing two deer with one bullet! John also witnessed her shoot an eight point buck standing freehand at 335 yards.

Faye was preceded in death by her husband, John, infant son, parents, brothers Francis, Thomas (Bud) and William LaVoi and sister-in-law, Mecca LaVoi.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mavis LaVoi and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Her family wishes to thank the staff of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home for their loving care to Faye over the last 7 years.

Orville Haugen

Orville Haugen, age 87, of Gully, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday (May 16th) at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday (May 20th) at Elim Lutheran Brethren Church in Clearbrook, Minnesota with the Rev. Tom Seaver officiating. Interment will be in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Gully at a later date. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services on Wednesday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Gonvick American Legion Post #304 and the Trail VFW Post #6426. Orville was born on January 22, 1922 to Ole and Florence (Johnson) Haugen in Gonvick, Minnesota. He proudly served in the United States Army, stationed in Japan during World War II. He was a member of the Gonvick American Legion Post #304 and the Trail V.F.W. Post #6426.

He was united in marriage to Elaine Peterson on January 15, 1948. He resided in the Gonvick and Gully area where he enjoyed farming, logging, gardening, and was self-employed in water and sewer, building demolition, and excavation business.

Orville enjoyed spending time with his family and looked forward to family gatherings at the farm. He loved playing horseshoes, cards and shaking dice at the Gully Café with his coffee buddies.

Orville passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook at the age of 87 years.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine of Clearbrook; children, Dallas of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, David (Debra) of Ozark, MO, Delaine (Bill) Bjerke of Savage, Minnesota, Diane (Gary) Dawson of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Darrell of Shevlin, Minnesota, Dale of Owatonna, Minnesota, Gary of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Gerald (Stephanie) of Farmington, Minnesota, Glen (Carol) of Elk River, Minnesota, Gloria (Greg) Peterson of Alexandria, Minnesota, Orvin of Gully, and Owen (Julie) of Gonvick, Minnesota; 27 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; sisters, Emma (Albert) Satran of Clearbrook, Minnesota, Dorothy Lindgren of Park River, North Dakota; and brother, Leif (DeeDee) Haugen of Bagley, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Arthur; and sister, Doris Larson.

Ansel Haugom

1917-2012

Ansel Haugom, age 94, of McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (September 26th) at McIntosh Senior Living. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday (October 1st) at Salem Lutheran Church in McIntosh with the Rev. Aage Carlsen officiating. Interment will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, rural McIntosh. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Sunday (September 30th) and for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. All visitation will be held at Salem Lutheran Church in McIntosh. Military honors will be provided by the McIntosh V.F.W. Ansel was born December 11, 1917 to Arne and Andrina (Tofsley) Haugom in Ward County North Dakota near Minot. He passed away September 26, 2012 at age 94 in McIntosh, Minnesota.

Ansel's mother passed away when he was three. The family then moved back to McIntosh where he was raised by his father and two sisters, in Lessor Township, north of McIntosh.

He was drafted into the army after Pearl Harbor and was among the first Americans sent oversees during WW II, saw heavy action in North Africa and was captured at the Kasserine Pass, Tunisia. He spent 26 months as a prisoner of war in Germany. While a POW, he was shot in the back at point blank range for moving too slow and suffered many other terrible hardships. He was honorably discharged in 1945, re-enlisted and spent three years in Germany during the Occupation from 1946 to 1949. In 1950, he was reactivated from the Army Reserve and served in Korea for 10 months. He was discharged at the rank of Staff Sargeant.

He married Clarice Henrietta Svalen in McIntosh October 10, 1951. They farmed south of McIntosh. Born to them were Cynthia Ann in 1952 and twins, Gene Ansel and Craig Vincent, in 1956. Craig passed away at birth.

While farming, Ansel also worked on the North Dakota Missile Bases, Curfman Construction and with Oswald Grundyson and Clarence Hagen. He helped build the Fosston Hospital and many area homes.

Ansel was an avid Twins fan to the very end. He loved the farm, animals and especially horses. He rode horseback into his 80's and gave many sleigh rides to his grandchildren and friends with his team and bobsled.

Ansel and Clarice loved celebrations in their home and were the ever gracious hosts. Ansel was a consummate story teller, able to draw on his excellent memory of dates and people's names to give a great oral history of his life and times.

The greatest joys of his life were his wife, Clarice, children, Cindy and Gene, and his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in McIntosh where he was active on the church council, and was a member of the McIntosh V.F.W. Post #6891.

He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia (Leslie) Bly; son, Gene (Mavis) Haugom; Grandchildren, Erin (Jason) Teiken, Travis (Stacy) Bly, Galen (Kaari) Bly, Matt (Natalie) Bly; Great-Grandchildren, Ellen, Jacob and Emma Teiken, Brianna, William, Sydney and Sofia Bly, Lathe and Laird Bly, Brielle and Silas Bly; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Clarice (June 2002); son, Craig; his parents; his sisters and their husbands, Thelma (Waldo) Erickson and Hallie (Ole) Fjeld.

Norval Olander Haugen

1926-2014

Norval Haugen, age 88 of Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Sunday, June 22nd at First Care Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 27th at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Alan Arneson officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston, and there will also be reviewal for one hour before the funeral at the church on Friday morning. Norval Olander Haugen was born to Andrew and Selma (Vasend) Haugen on June 10, 1926 in King Township, rural McIntosh, Minnesota.

He received his early education in both McIntosh and Fosston schools. In 1944, at the height of World War II he enlisted in the US Navy. Upon his discharge, he enrolled in and graduated from Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 1952, he married the love of his life, his dear bride, Marian (Colsen) Haugen. They resided in and around Fosston, Minnesota for their entire marriage of over 61 years.

After a period of time working as an auto mechanic he began a thirty year career as the manager of Schraeders Auto Parts Store in Fosston. Upon retiring from that position, he and Marian continued their business of Haugen Refinishing and Crafts. This endeavor allowed them to spend time together and was a creative outlet for both of their artistic personalities. Norval loved working with wood, especially oak.

Norval and Marian were delighted to welcome five children to their young family. In 1953, Susan was born quickly followed by Bruce (1954), Daniel (1958), Amy (1960), and last, but not least, Brian (1963).

Norval enjoyed fishing, golfing, auction sales, Twins baseball, watching birds, and listening to both country and gospel music, and he loved keeping and maintaining a beautiful yard.

He was a faithful member of Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fosston where he served as a trustee and in various other capacities.

Norval and Marian continued to be blessed as the years went by. They were given the wonderful opportunity of enjoying eight grandchildren and later on, twelve great grandchildren.

After a brave fight against Parkinson's Disease, he entered First Care Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston in May, 2012. He passed away there on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at the age of 88 years.

Norval is survived by his wife, Marian of Fosston; his five children, Susan (John) Berg of New York Mills, Minnesota, Bruce Haugen of Fosston, Dan Haugen of Renton, WA, Amy (Alan) Kachel and Brian (Karen) Haugen of Elk River, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Sarah (Tim) Jahnke, Carl (Laura Mapp) Berg, Erik Berg, Rachel (Chris) Fencl, Jason (Jen) Haugen, Chrissy Munter, Kayla Kachel and Mariah Kachel; 12 great grandchildren, Gabriel, Selma, Caleb and Seth Jahnke, Madison, Christian and Chloe Haugen, Wyatt, Axel, Owen and Carly Munter, and Natalie Scheuermann; his sister, Gladys (Harold) Vig of Fosston; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Selma Haugen; his siblings, Mrytle (Walter) Pierce, Edvina (Elmer) Behm, Ann (Earl) Tucker, Alice (Jim) Montain, Esther (Jerry) Herbert and Stanley (Joan) Haugen; and one niece, Mary Herbert.

John Albert Hedin

John Hedin, age 84, of Gonvick, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday (November 15th) at the Clearwater County Memorial Hospital in Bagley, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (November 21st) at Samhold Lutheran Church in Gonvick with the Rev. Tom Jacobson officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery-Hansville, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Friday (November 20th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. John Albert Hedin was born in Duluth, Minnesota on May 27, 1925, to Swedish parents, John Albert Hedin and Agnes (Nelson) Hedin. John was the youngest of three children. In 1929 the family moved to Gonvick, Minnesota where they lived on an 80 acre farm that had been in Agnes's family. John attended school in Gonvick and three years in a one room school, District 33. He graduated from Gonvick High School in 1943 at the age of 17. John said he preferred hunting and fishing to school.

John met Faye LaVoi at a basketball game at Fosston in 1942; John was playing for Gonvick. They started dating when John was a Senior in high school and Faye a Junior. John's uncle Al said John wore out two cars going to Fosston to visit Faye. After John graduated he stayed on the farm for two years.

John and Faye were married in 1945. Shortly after their marriage John joined the Merchant Marines. He was stationed at Sheep's Head Bay, New York, for training. He could take the subway to Coney Island for 10 cents and buy a hotdog for a nickel. He discovered first hand that he did not like the huge roller coaster! John was in Times Square, July 1945 when the Germans surrendered. With the war over, John was discharged in the fall of 1945. Shortly thereafter John and Faye moved to Canton, Illinois wher they lived until the 1980's. John worked in the mines where he did various jobs over the years. At the time of his retirement he was a Master Electrician. After retiring, John and Faye spent their summers on the family farm in Gonvick and wintered in Florida at Indian Lake Estates.

John and Faye traveled extensively, often visiting Faye's former students. John was an avid golfer until the end of his life. When Johns was asked about his most special memories he said, "Coming home to Gonvick for deer hunting and fishing." He died doing one of the things he loved the most, deer hunting.

He was a member of the Gonvick American Legion Post #304.

John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Faye of Clearbrook, Minnesota; brother-in-law, William LaVoi; sister-in-law, Julie Hedin and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents; one brother, Milton and one sister, Lorraine.

Elaine Rosella (Peterson) Haugen

Elaine Haugen, age 80, from Clearbrook and formerly from Gully, Minnesota passed away on Saturday, July 11th at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 15th at 2:00 PM at Elim Lutheran Brethren Church in Clearbrook with Rev. Dale Hanson officiating. Elaine Rosella Peterson was born on December 23, 1928 in Gonvick, Minnesota to Casper and Hilma (Anderson) Peterson. She was baptized and confirmed at Samhold Lutheran Church in Gonvick. She graduated in 1946 from Gonvick Public School.

She was united in marriage to Orville Haugen on January 15, 1948. Elaine resided mainly in the Gonvick and Gully, Minnesota area until November, 2008 when she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook. She was a devoted wife and mother and spent her life lovingly raising her twelve children with an everlasting commitment to her family. Elaine's strong faith in Jesus Christ carried her through life's tribulations and touched the lives of many. She taught Sunday school and served on the Ladies Aid at Lund Lutheran Church in Gully and later attended Elim Lutheran Brethren Church in Clearbrook, Minnesota where she also served.

Elaine enjoyed spending time with her family and looked forward to visits from her children and grandchildren. She has fond memories of the neighborhood children's frequent visits for cookies and welcomed the pleasant interruptions to her day. She enjoyed singing and was always willing to entertain the staff and residents at the Good Samaritan Center with songs. She also enjoyed drawing, playing bingo and cards.

On Saturday, July 11, 2009 Elaine Haugen passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook at the age of 80 years.

She is survived by twelve children, Dallas of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, David (Debra) of Ozark, MO, Delaine (Bill) Bjerke of Savage, Minnesota, Diane (Gary) Dawson of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Darrell of Shevlin, Minnesota, Dale of Owatonna, Minnesota, Gary of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Gerald (Stephanie) of Farmington, Minnesota, Glen (Carol) of Elk River, Minnesota, Gloria (Greg) Peterson of Alexandria, Minnesota, Orvin of Gully, Minnesota and Owen (Julie) of Gonvick, Minnesota; 27 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; one brother, Raymond (Liz) Peterson of Molalla, OR, and one sister, Carol (Iver) Bergh of Pennington, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville Haugen; one infant granddaughter, and one infant grandson.

Linda Jean (Schofield) Hemmingsen

Linda Hemmingsen, age 64, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Friday (August 9th) at the University of Minnesota Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (August 23rd) at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Linda Jean Schofield was born on May 9, 1949 in Waukon, Iowa to parents Donald and Helen (McGeough) Schofield. She was baptized at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa. Linda grew up in Monona and attended the St. Patrick Catholic School through the 8th grade. She then attended MFL High School where she graduated in 1967. Linda moved to Minneapolis where she attended a vocational school to become a medical lab tech. She worked her way through school as a live-in nanny. After obtaining her degree, Linda worked in Richfield. While in Minneapolis she met Allen.

Linda was united in marriage to Allen Larry Hemmingsen on May 24, 1969 in Monona, Iowa. After their marriage Linda and Allen resided and raised their family in Fosston. Linda held various jobs throughout the years including being her husband's right hand assistant; typing up estimates for his company; Hemmingsen Masonary. The majority of her career was spent working for Pine to Prairie Home Health Care/Cornerstone; where Linda worked as a Secretary, Home Health Aide and Personal Assistant.

Linda was a member of Kingo Lutheran Church. As a child Linda's father instilled the love of fishing in her with many hours spent fishing on the Mississippi River. She in turn, did the same for her three children. Linda loved cooking and baking. She enjoyed looking at cookbooks and was always trying new recipes. Over the years, Linda had a passion for decorating cakes and spent endless hours decorating cakes for family and friends. In addition, she enjoyed reading, search-a-word puzzles, playing cards and games. She was a tough scrabble opponent.

Linda was a very handy person; there wasn't a thing she couldn't fix. If she didn't know how to fix it, she'd buy the book and figure it out. She had a tremendous love for people; young and old. She was a big hearted, loving, caring person who always put others needs in front of her own. To top it off she was a big hugger, too. Linda was a devoted Mom and Grandma who loved and lived for her family.

Linda was a fighter and never gave up -- not even in the end. After eight long months in Minneapolis, Linda Jean Hemmingsen passed away on Friday, August 9, 2013 at the University of Minnesota Fairview surrounded by her daughter and son in-law at the age of 64 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Barb (Mark) Hagen of Fosston; son, Brad (Emily) Hemmingsen of Mesa, AZ; twin granddaughters, Camille Jean and Shelby Ann Hagen; one grandson, Parker Allen Hemmingsen; daughter-in-law, Leah Hemmingsen. Also surviving are her siblings: Joyce(Mike) Hamann of Tripoli, Iowa; Jim(Ellen) Schofield of Phoenix, AZ; Dan Schofield of Monona, Iowa. Mother in-law, Irma Hemmingsen of Fosston. Father in-law, Delmont Hemmingsen of Erskine. Brothers in-law and sisters in-law, Dennis and his wife Jan of Fosston, Roger and his wife Bonnie of Fosston, Jerry and his wife Ardella of Trimont, Minnesota and Tom and his wife Sheryl Vedbraaten of Crookston. Numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins also survive.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, Donald and Helen Schofield, her husband, Allen, her son, Paul, brother in-law, Richard Plante, and an infant niece and nephew.

Joan Odell (Lund) Haugen

1925-2014

Joan Haugen, age 78, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Friday (January 10th) at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (January 18th) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Poplar River Cemetery, Fosston at a later date. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Joan Odell Lund was born on December 22, 1935 in Gully, Minnesota the daughter of Olaf and Bertha Evenson Lund. Joan married Marvis Tangen on June 6, 1954. They resided in Fosston, Minnesota and raised three boys, Dale, Terry and Todd. Marvis passed away on February 4, 1971.

Joan raised her three boys and worked at the Hartz grocery store in Fosston. She married Stanley Haugen on July 1, 1977. Stanley passed away on May 17, 1996.

Joan spent many enjoyable hours volunteering at Hope Lutheran Church by quilting blankets for those in need and helping in the kitchen. Joan enjoyed getting together with her many friends, family and grandchildren, and enjoyed long walks in her hometown.

Survivors include two sons, Terry of Fosston, Minnesota, and Todd and his wife Maureen of Rosemount, Minnesota; grandchildren, Brian, Meggan, Kelly, Nicholas, Candace, Janessa, Morgen and Kira; three sisters, Goldie Torberg, Opal and her husband Boyd, and Donna and her husband Don. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Marvis and Stanley; son, Dale; and brother, Sonny Lund.

Paul Allen Hemmingsen

Paul Hemmingsen, age 37, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday (October 10th) as a result of injuries he sustained in an automobile accident near Fosston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (October 16th) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fosston with Father Dave Super presiding. Interment will be in Kingo Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Paul Allen Hemmingsen was born on August 13, 1972 in Bagley, Minnesota to parents Allen and Linda (Schofield) Hemmingsen. He was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fosston. Paul grew up in Fosston and graduated from Fosston High School with the class of 1991. He then attended Moorhead Technical College, graduating with a degree in architectural drafting. Following his graduation, he moved to the Twin Cities and worked for HGA in Plymouth, Minnesota. He returned to Fosston in 1998 and began work with Widseth, Smith & Nolting in their offices located in Crookston, Grand Forks and Bemidji.

Paul was united in marriage to Leah Ann Palubicki on August 16, 2003 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. In 2008, Paul returned to his family's business, Hemmingsen Masonry, and worked with his uncle and brother.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. A favorite annual event for Paul was the fishing opener, spent with his good friends and he loved spending time training and hunting with dog, Duke. Paul was also an avid reader and was always interested in furthering his knowledge in a variety of areas.

Paul passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2009 from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident near Fosston at the age of 37 years.

Survivors include his wife, Leah of Fosston; his mother, Linda Hemmingsen of Fosston; sister, Barb (Mark) Hagen and their children, Camille and Shelby, of Fosston; brother, Brad (Emily) of Fosston; paternal grandmother, Irma Hemmingsen of Fosston; paternal grandfather, Delmont Hemmingsen of Erskine; sisters-in-law, Tara (Andy) Ordonez and their children, Natasha and Ian of Buffalo, Minnesota; Alison (Derek) Broadley and their children, Lochlan and Karsten of Bermuda; Meghan Palubicki and her son, Thatcher of Fosston; father and mother-in-law, Jim and Nina Palubicki of Fosston. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his father, Allen; and maternal grandparents, Donald and Helen Schofield; and uncle, Richard Plante.

Helen (Vraa) Haugen

Helen Haugen, age 99, of McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (November 7th) at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday (November 11th) at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh with the Rev. Aage Carlsen officiating. Interment will be in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, McIntosh. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Helen was born on February 7, 1914, in Wibaux, Montana, to Mikkel and Geline (Johnson) Vraa and was baptized there.

As a young child she moved with her parents and twin sister, Cora to a farm east of Winger, Minnesota. She attended country school in Sletten Township and McIntosh High School.

She was united in marriage to Otto Haugen on August 7, 1932 at the parsonage in Fosston by Rev. Hildahl, and farmed near Winger.

In 1941 they purchased a farm in Heier Township south of Fosston. In 1946 they sold, and bought a farm northeast of McIntosh.

In November of 1962, she began working at the McIntosh Manor Nursing Home, retiring in 1985.

She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, planting flowers, also knitting and crocheting, and spending time with her family. She had a special place in her heart for her daughters-in-law, Grace, Norma, Dorothy, Janice and Debbie.

She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh, WELCA and the Martha Bible Study Group.

Otto passed away on January 16, 1981. She continued living on the farm until the fall of 1997 when she moved into the Cottage Apartments.

Helen passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine at the age of 99 years and nine months

Helen is survived by two sons, Lowell (Janice) of Fosston and Orvis (Debbie) of Grygla, Minnesota; daughter-in-law, Norma of Aurora, Minnesota; 14 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters and their husbands, Cora and Howard Kiecker and Gladys and Clarence Tolness; two sons, Jerome and Melvin; and two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Haugen and Grace Francis; one grandson, Scott Haugen and one granddaughter, Sherri Pape.

Lorenda Faith Hendricks was born on July 23, 1951 in Crookston, Minnesota to parents Arnold and Bernice (Ramstad) Hendricks. She grew up in McIntosh and graduated from McIntosh High School. Following high school, she attended Northland Technical College in Thief River Falls and then worked for the Crookston Diocese for several years.

Near and dear to her was coffee time and visiting with her friends at Oak Court in Crookston.

She his survived by her son, Nathan Hendricks of Crookston; granddaughters, Shannon and Allyson; brother, Dennis Hendricks of Tioga, North Dakota; sisters, Linda Barstad of McIntosh, Minnesota, Donna Hamlin of Fargo, North Dakota, Deb (Chet) Nelson of Bagley, Minnesota, and Sheila (Steve) Vigoren of Burnsville, Minnesota.

Eleanora Gladys (Syverson) Hendrickson

Eleanora Hendrickson, age 78, of Trail, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (December 14th) at Essentia Hospital in Fosston, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday (December 19th) at Zion Lutheran Church in Oklee, Minnesota with the Rev. Margaret Jacobus and Rev. Gordon Syverson officiating. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Oklee. Eleanora Gladys Syverson was born on April 18, 1933 in Hill River Township, rural Trail, Minnesota to parents Ted and Linda (Christianson) Syverson. She was baptized and confirmed at Vernes Lutheran Church. She attended school at the Lindsay School in Hill River Township and graduated from McIntosh High School. She attended Bemidji State University, graduating in 1953, and later earned her Master's Degree in education. Eleanora began her teaching career in Oklee in the fall of 1953, retiring in 1996.

Eleanora was united in marriage to Morris Hendrickson on July 14, 1956 at Vernes Lutheran Church of rural McIntosh. In 1960, besides teaching, she tutored a 4 1/2 year old handicapped girl for two years.

She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oklee where she served on many committees and sang with the Zionettes. She enjoyed baking, cooking, canning, gardening, taking care of her lawn, and fancy work. Most of all, she loved her grandchildren and took great joy in teaching.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Morris of Trail; two daughters, Cindy (Wayne) Schmiedeberg of McIntosh, Minnesota, and Nancy (Brad) Gunderson of Trail; and son, Richard (fiance, Jami Eischens) of McIntosh; four granddaughters, Ashley (David) Halverson of Brooks, Minnesota, Megan (Andy) Lukkes of Moorhead, Minnesota, Emma and Natalee Eischens of Oklee, Minnesota; and two great grandchildren, Gunnar and Aubrey Halverson.

Also surviving are five sisters, Ruby Heideman of McIntosh, Ardell (Lloyd) Opdahl of Oklee, Bernice (Jerome) Voxland of McIntosh, Gloria (Mark) Morque of Lebanon, MO, and Viola (Richard) Georgeson of Hillsboro, North Dakota; three brothers, Arnold (Conne)Syverson of Trail, Entrip (Sharon) Syverson of Lakeville, Minnesota, and Karsten (Corky) Syverson of McIntosh; one brother-in-law, Rueben Brekke of McIntosh; and one sister-in-law, Delores Syverson of Fosston. Many cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael; one brother, Floyd Syverson; two sisters, Verna Syverson and Lorraine Brekke; infant twin brother and sister Morris and Doris; brothers-in-law, Curtis Heideman, Kenneth Hendrickson, Helmer Hendrickson, and Elmer and Mable Enerson; and mother and father-in-law, Haaken and Christina Hendrickson.

Irene Olive (Carter) Horacek

Irene Horacek, age 87, of Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, January 2nd at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, January 9th at 10:00 AM at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine with Rev. Michelle Miller officiating. A time of gathering for family and friends will be held for one hour before the memorial service, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine is in charge of the arrangements.

Irene Olive Carter was born on January 28, 1925 to parents Samuel and Isabel (Watkin) Carter in Richmond Hill, NY. She attended PS #47 in Richmond. After graduating in 1942, she attended business school and then worked for Peiser & Sons Jewelers.

In 1947, she married Robert Groeber, and they made their home in East Meadow, NY. They had five children: Ethel, Robert, Patricia, Bonnie, and Glen.

She was employed at The Salisbury Country Club as a Banquet Waitress for many years, and in 1979 she married Edward Horacek, and they came to make their home in Erskine, Minnesota.

Irene enjoyed cooking and craft making and was a great baker and enjoyed entertaining. Her great love was repairing and restoring antique dolls; she collected and enjoyed many dolls over her lifetime. Irene and Edward attended the United Methodist Church in Erskine.

On Wednesday, January 2, 2013 Irene passed away at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erkine at the age of 87 years.

Irene is survived by: Daughters Ethel Pangiarella of Mentor, Minnesota, Patricia Gold of NY, Bonnie (Bill) Corbin of NC and Son Robert (Tina) Groeber of NJ, Stepdaughters Kathy (Rick) Carlson of OH, Peggy (Bill) Shaefer of NY, and Stepson Russell (Mary) Horacek of McIntosh, Minnesota, and nineteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: Husband Edward, Son Glen, Sisters Marion and Ethel, Brother Ronald, and Stepdaughter Laura Hinman.

Dale Eugene Hextell

Dale Hextell, age 80, of Lengby, Minnesota, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday (December 22nd) at Essentia Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday (December 27th) at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby with the Rev. Mark Faugstad officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Dale Eugene Hextell was born October 5, 1931 on a farm near Lengby, Minnesota, to Bernard and Elvera (Wahl) Hextell. He grew up in Lengby, and attended school at the Antell country school and furthered his education at the Crookston Agricultural College.

He was active in the Naval Reserves from 1950 to1952 and then enlisted into the United States Marine Corps from 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1954 after serving in the Korean War. He was an active Lifetime member of VFW Post 2759 during this time he served as Commander several times as well as Drill Sergeant for 29 years.

He married Mildred Freyholtz on June 26th, 1952 in Bejou, Minnesota together they had seven children; Cheryl, Jeanette, Cindy, Roger, Roxanne, Mitchell, and Rachel. They made their home south of Lengby where they raised sheep, cattle and small grains up until his passing.

Dale was a very skilled jack of all trades, including welding and creating machinery at Oak Crest Mfg, grading and snowplowing township and county roads for 20 years, and selling snowmobiles. He especially enjoyed bulldozing jobs and was known for helping neighbors with any type of repair needs. Dale looked forward to visiting with friends and neighbors. He had a very playful sense of humor, enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren to play whist and the art of arm wrestling. Dale looked forward to the camaraderie of deer hunting season each fall. He also loved the companionship of his dogs, especially his dog Laddie. In his later years he enjoyed reading Louie Lamour books, and watching the History Channel.

Dale passed away peacefully with family by his side on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Essentia Health in Fosston, Minnesota at 80 years of age.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Mildred, daughters Cheryl (Brian) Schafer of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Jeanie (Marshall) Kostka of Frazee MN, Cindy Kulzer of Fifty Lakes,MN, son Roger (Rhonda Larson) Hextell of Lengby,MN , daughter Roxanne (Jack) Milender, son Mitchell Hextell of Lengby, Minnesota, and daughter Rachel (Tim) Kipp of Cut Bank, MT; 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sister Connie, brothers Harry and Homer.

Linda Bernice Hemry was born on October 13, 1928 in Columbia Township, rural Lengby, Minnesota to parents Martin and Ester (Bergland) Hemry. She grew up on the home place and attended rural school at the Maple Hill School.

Bernice was united in marriage to Lester Douglas Hilliard on July 26, 1949 in McIntosh, Minnesota. After their marriage, they resided in Wyoming, Washington, and Alaska. They returned to Lengby in 1954 to farm and raise a family. Lester and Bernice spent the majority of their lives in the Lengby area. Bernice has been a resident of Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji, Minnesota since November of 2006.

She was a member of Fridhem Lutheran Church in Lengby.

Bernice passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the Havenwood Care Center at the age of 81 years and three months.

Left to mourn her passing are seven children, Sandra Hilliard of Bemidji, Minnesota, Denice (Alan) Chaney of Lewistown, MT, Mitch (Edie) Hilliard of Lengby, Minnesota, Gail (Merv) Siroky of Lewistown, MT, Jean Vig of Cambridge, Minnesota, Wes Hilliard of Lengby, Minnesota, and Darrell (Jill) Hilliard of New Richmond, WI. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2002; her parents; one brother and six sisters.

Pallbearers will be James Rudh, Karson Otness, Brian Ohren, Chris Mueller, Don Dyrdahl, and Earl Hilliard.

Harry Donald Hextell

Harry Hextell, age 81, from Lengby, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, February 17th at McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh, Minnesota. Harry Donald Hextell was born March 12, 1928 on a farm near Lengby, Minnesota, to Bernard and Elvera (Wahl) Hextell. He grew up in Lengby, and attended school in Lengby and Fosston MN. Harry also earned a 2 year Auto Mechanical Degree from a local technical school in Fargo, North Dakota.

He married Mildred Anderson and together they had five children; Beverly, Diane, Karla, Bryan, and Jeffrey. Harry and his family moved to Morris IL, in 1957. He worked at the paper mill for several years then obtained a job at Caterpillar in Joliet, IL. He worked as a millwright at Caterpillar. His duties included: handling difficult automotive, large equipment, and shop mechanic jobs that others would not handle. He knew that no one would bother him, because they did not want to be roped into helping on these difficult projects. Harry retired from Caterpillar and moved back to Lengby, Minnesota.

Harry served from April 26, 1946 to April 25, 1949 in the U.S. Air Force at the rank of Corporal. He was decorated with the WW II Victory Medal, worked in the motor pool, was stationed in the Philippines, and he also served as an MP. He was a member of the VFW, Post #2759 of Lengby.

When Harry was in his 50's he obtained his pilot's license. He had a 175 Cessna. He flew this plane from Morris, IL to Fosston, Minnesota, many times from 1975 to 1980. He enjoyed using his Ford tractor and brush-cutter, and cutting the grass and ditches around the farm in Lengby. Harry also enjoyed working in the garage on one of his many mechanical and automotive projects. He collected Ford Edsels, and planned to restore them during his retirement years, but life dealt him a curve with a stroke that left him with limited motion in his left side.

On Wednesday, February 17, 2010 Harry passed away peacefully at McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh, Minnesota at the age of 81 years, 11 months, and 5 days.

Harry will be lovingly remembered by his 4 children and family; three daughters, Beverly (Steve) Nygaard of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Diane Berry of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and Karla Hextell of Bagley MN; one son, Jeff (Michelle) Hextell of Elizabeth City, NC; six grandsons, Bradley, Ryan, Kurt and Alan Berry, and Sean and Daryl Larson; seven great granddaughters, Kennedy, Jeslyn, Payten, Kiersten, and Sommer Berry, and Anamarie and Alyssa Larson; one great grandson, Blake Berry; one brother, Dale (Mildred) Hextell of Lengby; and many nieces and nephews & great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Bryan Hextell; grandson, Steven Nygaard Jr.; great grandson, Anthony Larson; his parents; sister, Connie Dickson; and brother, Homer Hextell.

Constance Irene Black Hixon

Constance Irene Black was born on April 14, 1915, to parents James and Adeline (Smith) Black in Rising Fawn, Georgia. She grew up in Drumright, Oklahoma, where she graduated from high school.

Constance was united in marriage to Donald Hixon in 1942. They traveled extensively due to Donald's career in the U.S. Air Force. Constance loved to travel including a trip to Israel. Constance and Donald retired to the Milton/Bagdad, Florida area. Donald passed away in July of 1990.

In 2009, Constance moved to Erskine, Minnesota to live with her son David.

She is survived by her son David of Erskine; many grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, LaDon Prather; one grandson, Bryan Tyner; and eight brothers and sisters.

Milton Hilliard, age 87, from Lengby, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, June 24th at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 30th at 11:00 AM at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Lengby with Scott Morey officiating. Milton D. Hilliard was born on July 17, 1921 to parents Wilfred and Julia (Erickson) Hilliard at Lengby, Minnesota where he grew up and attended the Klinke School. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and a lifelong member of Fridhem Lutheran Church in Lengby.

Milton served in the U.S. Army from October 1942 to November 1945 and was stationed in Siapan and Okinawa. After the service he returned to Lengby and worked with his father.

He was united in marriage to Beatrice Rime on August 4, 1946 in McIntosh, Minnesota. They lived in Lengby for one year before moving to North Dakota where Milton worked at the Garrison Dam for eight years before returning to Lengby. Milton also worked for many years in Alaska, drove truck for Lyle Hilliard and operated a gravel pit out of Lengby.

He served on the Lengby City Council for 38 years, served as a Lengby police officer, was sexton of the Lengby City Cemetery and was Commander of the VFW in Lengby.

On Wednesday, June 24, 2009 Milton passed away at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minnesota at the age of 87 years.

Survivors include his wife Beatie of Lengby; three children, Marilyn (Don) Smith of Lengby, Larry (Sue) Hilliard of Stacy, Minnesota and Mary Hilliard of Crookston, Minnesota; five grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; one sister, Mildred Henschke of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; two sisters-in-law, Lorraine Hilliard of Fosston, Minnesota and Lucille Hilliard of Crystal, Minnesota; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Delbert, Wilbur and Kermit.

Steve Hoaas, age 58, from Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Monday, April 19th at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Stephan Martin Hoaas was born on July 2, 1951 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Andor and Roberta Hoaas. He spent his early childhood years in Erskine, Minnesota. After the death of his father Andor in 1957, his mother Roberta married Clifford Anderson in 1959. In 1960, the family moved to Warren, Minnesota where Steve graduated from Warren High School in 1969. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith and was confirmed in the Methodist faith. Steve served in the United States Army for three years, beginning in August of 1970. He spent most of his tour in Germany, and was honorably discharged in May of 1973. Steve was married to Liz Mayer on June 30, 1973 and they had two children Camillia and Jerrod Hoaas.

Steve spent many years in Tennessee and various southern states doing electrical work. In 1990, Steve returned to Minnesota. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and anything outdoors. He had a life-long love for animals, especially dogs. He enjoyed watching birds and wildlife all seasons of the year. Steve loved visiting with friends and family and will be missed by many. May God bless his memory.

Steve passed away on Monday, April 19, 2010 at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine at the age of 58 years, nine months and 16 days.

He is survived by his daughter, Camillia (Mike) Thompson and grandsons Trevor, Jakson and Noah of Bejou, Minnesota, son Jerrod (Nicole) Hoaas and grandsons Kale and Aylin of Fargo, North Dakota, and "other daughter" Ashley Jenson of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Sisters: Barbara (Steven) Gaalswyk of Erskine; Patricia (Larry) Sandberg of Ottertail, Minnesota; Geraldine (Marcell) Rogalla of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; and Charlotte (Kurt) Krueger of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Brothers: Leland (Sherry) Hoaas of Erskine, Minnesota; and Bryan (Sue) Anderson of Casper, WY. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Andor Hoaas, mother Roberta (Bakke) Hoaas-Anderson, step-father Clifford Anderson, and nephew Corey Rogalla.

Lorraine Mae Gunderson Hilliard

Lorraine Hilliard, age 81, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday (November 2nd) at First Care Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday (November 8th) at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. John Dalen officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Lorraine Mae Gunderson was born on January 27, 1932 in Bejou, Minnesota to parents Helmer and Mary (Uhlir) Gunderson. She grew up and attended country school in the Bejou area. She worked as a waitress at a cafe in Fosston, at Francin's Variety Store in Fosston and the Simplot Potato Plant in Fosston.

She was united in marriage to Kermit Hilliard on April 18, 1953 in Mahnomen, Minnesota. After their marriage, they lived for a short time in Alaska and North Dakota before making their home in Lengby, Minnesota. They moved to Fosston in 1956. Lorraine spent many years working at the Johnson Rest Home in Fosston and completed her CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) certification when she was 68 years old.

Lorraine was a long time member of Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston. She was an excellent cook, especially holiday meals and when the family came to visit. She also enjoyed gardening, canning and spending time with her family at Itasca State Park and going for drives around the area. She also occasionally liked to dance and listen to old time country and gospel music.

Lorraine passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at First Care Living Center in Fosston at the age of 81 years, nine months and six days.

Survivors include three sons, Gary (Becky) of Glyndon, Minnesota, Steve (Renee) of Bagley, Minnesota, and Randy (Denelle) of Bemidji, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Jessica (Tim) Aland, Ashley, Annika and Mikkel; one great grandchild, Chase; and step grandchildren, Madison and Jared.

Also surviving is her brother, Arnold (Diane) Gunderson of McIntosh, Minnesota; and two sisters, Adele (LeRoy) Stenmoen of McIntosh, and Elaine (Don) Cole of the Twin Cities; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit on December 17, 1999; her parents; and three sisters, Marion, Verna and Arlene.

James Andrew Hoel

James Hoel, age 75, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2012 at Riverview Hospital in Crookston, Minnesota after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday (August 4th) at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine with the Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. Interment will be in Broderheim Cemetery, rural Erskine. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. James Andrew Hoel was born on December 5, 1936 in the Erskine hospital, Badger Township, Minnesota. He was the son of Martin B. and Anna O. (Ruth) Hoel. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church of Erskine.

He graduated from the Erskine High School in 1955. He joined the United States Air Force and served four years. He worked for Sears in Minneapolis for many years and briefly with Marvin Windows in Warroad, Minnesota before retiring to the family homestead several years ago. He very much enjoyed his retirement years on the farm.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and nature. He did several lengthy canoe trips some in the Canadian high arctic. These trips included Lake St. Joseph, Ontario; Fond du lac River, God's River, Cochran River, Hanbury and Thelon River, Back River, Dubawnt River, and the Kazan River. He has also enjoyed several trips to the BWCAW and Stormy Lake.

He is survived by brothers, Gordon (Donna) of Cedar, Minnesota, and Dennis (Susan) of Duluth. Nieces, Tracey, Allison, and Megan and nephews, Eric and Chad. Also several grand nieces and nephews, cousins and friends; and his faithful dog, Siggy.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Nicolayson, Randy Lee, Steve Jacobson, Brenda Peterson, Chad Hoel, Eric Hoel and Dave Benson.

Sidney Arnold Hoialmen was born December 27, 1914 in rural Clearbrook, Minnesota to parents Jensena Bertina Olson-Hoialmen and Albert Olai Hoialmen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and graduated from Clearbrook High School in 1932.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Sidney enlisted in the United States Navy on February 18, 1942 where he served as a sonar operator on the commissioning crews of the USS Tinosa and the USS Bergall. After completing nine successful wartime runs in the South Pacific, Sidney was honorably discharged on September 29, 1945.

Sidney was united in marriage to Phyllis Joyce Pederson on May 17, 1944 (Syttende Mai), in New London, CT. Following the end of WWII, Sidney and Phyllis settled for a brief time in Clinton, IA, where they gave birth to their only son, Douglas Ignatius. In 1946 Sid moved his family to Crookston, Minnesota, where he opened and operated Sid's Beauty Shoppe.

In 1960 Sidney and his family moved to Fosston, Minnesota, where Sidney entered into a partnership with his father-in-law, Ignatius, in the furniture and funeral businesses until his retirement in 1988.

Sidney spent much of his retirement enjoying summers at the cabin that he and his wife built together on Union Lake in Erskine, Minnesota, in 1957. While at the lake, Sidney loved fishing, water skiing, wood working and entertaining friends and family. Additionally, Sidney and Phyllis were avid square dancers and spent a considerable amount of time traveling around the country to attend square dance conventions throughout their retirement.

Throughout his life, Sidney continued to play an active role in his community. In addition to being a devoted member of Hope Lutheran Church, Sidney also served as a volunteer fire fighter for over 30 years, was a member of the Rotary Club and was a founding member and president of Fosston Homes Inc.

Sidney passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home in Fosston, Minnesota, on Sunday, January 08, 2012, at the age of 97.

Sidney is survived by his son Douglas (Fosston), grandchildren Nathan Hoialmen and wife Angela (Minneapolis), Jessica Link and husband Matthew (Castle Rock, CO), Kathryn Hoialmen (Fosston) and friend Brian Hedlund (Fosston) and Jacob Hoialmen (Fargo) and friend Katrina Burslie (Fargo) and great grandchildren Spencer Hoialmen, Sydney and Alton Link and Alexander Hoialmen.

Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 58 years Phyllis, two sisters, Marie and Esther and two brothers, Ruben and Gordon.

Michael Charles 'Mike' Hoeft

Michael "Mike" Hoeft, age 66, from Erskine, Minnesota passed away on Friday, January 7th at Riverview Hospital in Crookston, Minnesota. Michael Charles Hoeft was born on February 19, 1944 to parents Charlie and Muriel (Hallas) Hoeft in Crookston, Minnesota. He grew up in Erskine, Minnesota, where he graduated from Erskine High School in 1962.

Following graduation, Mike worked in the Twin Cities for Control Data as well as helping out at Ness Cafe something he had done since he was 8 years old. In 1967 Mike purchased the Ness Cafe with his brother Jerry from Bob and Aimee Ness. He purchased his brother Jerry's interest in the business the following year and successfully operated the Ness Cafe which at that time included a bowling alley in Erskine, Minnesota with his wife Diane for over 35 years. He also was a Real Estate Agent working for Ken Olmscheid Realty and Chuck Stuhaug Realty and owned several other businesses including Mike's Furniture and the Erskine Machine Shop.

Mike was united in marriage to Diane Torkelson on November 23, 1968, at Rodnes Lutheran Church, rural Erskine, Minnesota. Following their marriage they both joined Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine, Minnesota.

Mike enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, golfing and especially his elk hunting trips to Montana, but bowling was Mike's passion, he was a member of the American Bowling Congress 299 and 800 clubs. He also enjoyed shooting pool and visiting with many friends over the years. He had a love for old cars and was always wheeling and dealing, his last project was a 1965 Chevrolet Impala SS which he was very proud of. Mike was a Staff Sargeant in the North Dakota Air National Guard from 1965-1971. He served on the Erskine Volunteer Fire Department for over 25 years, the Erskine Commercial Club, the Erskine City Council and the Erskine Economic Development Authority. He was a 40 year member of the Erskine American Legion Post 596, the Erskine Lion's Club, the Erskine Trap Shooting Club as well as a member of the Crookston Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Mike passed away on January 7, 2011 at Riverview Hospital in Crookston at the age of 66 years. He was a resident of the Riverview Care Center for the past two years.

He is survived by his wife, Diane of Erskine, Minnesota; two children, Michelle (Daniel) Miller of New Hope, Minnesota and Stephanie Helgeson of Mentor, Minnesota. Five brothers and four sisters; Doug Hoeft of Glendale Heights, IL, Jerry Hoeft of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Pat Anenson and her husband Vern of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Kathy Midboe and her husband Dallas of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Marilyn Novak and her husband Leonard of Warren, Minnesota, Dorothy Seidel and her husband Mike from Roseau, Minnesota, Twin Brothers Paul and John Hoeft of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Thomas (Tucker) Hoeft and his wife Jan of Big Sandy, TX; as well as many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Muriel Hoeft, brothers Russ and Charles (Chuck) Hoeft and one grandson Stephen Miller. Blessed be his memory.

Doug Hole, age 73, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (September 10th) at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Douglas Owen Hole was born on November 24, 1935 in Erskine, Minnesota to parents Ray and Verda (Barrow) Hole. He grew up in Erskine and graduated from Erskine High School in 1953. Following high school, Doug worked various jobs in the area and region, including surveying in South Dakota.

Doug entered the United States Air Force in July of 1958 and was stationed at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, California. He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Fealy on June 25, 1960 and received his honorable discharge in June of 1962.

Following his military service, Doug and Jane lived in St. Paul for a short time before settling in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. While in Coon Rapids, Doug worked as a machinist for Steel Sales, Inc. They returned to Erskine in 1976 and purchased an upholstery business. They operated the business out of their home until 1986 when they expanded and moved to downtown Erskine. During this time, Doug also drove school bus from 1977 until 1988. They sold the upholstery business in 2001 and retired.

Doug enjoyed being active as a volunteer during his retirement years in Erskine. He volunteered at the grocery store delivering groceries and milk, meals on wheels, mowed at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, and was a member of the Fairview Cemetery Board. He was also a dedicated and active member of the United Methodist Church in Erskine. Doug was known as a person that was always willing lend a helping hand to someone in need.

His interests included camping, reading, walking, feeding the birds, and watching the Price Is Right. Most of all, he loved the time that he spent together with his family.

Doug passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota at the age of 73 years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Jane, of Erskine; three children, Dan (Brenda) Hole of Erskine, Jeff (Jane) Hole of Winger, Minnesota, and Julie (Brian) Lene of Erskine; six grandchildren, Brandon, Leah, Larissa, Teanna, Zack, and Brylie; one sister, Patti (Russ) Bacon of Erskine; two brothers, Roger (Beatrice) Hole of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Wayne (Jeanne) Hole of Fargo, North Dakota. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dixie Holen

Dixie Holen, age 63, of McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Friday (March 2nd) at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota with her family at her side. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (March 10th) at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh with Pastor Ryan Rasmussen officiating. Interment will be in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, McIntosh. Dixie was born on March 10, 1948. She graduated Dilworth High School in 1966. She graduated Bemidji State University with a teaching degree. From there she began a 35 year long teaching career in Special Education at the McIntosh-Winger School/Win-E-Mac. After retiring from teaching she started working as a Guardian at Litem for the 9th Judicial District from January 2006 until the time of her illness. She also served on the Private Industry Council as Chair for 14 years.

Dixie's interests included spending time with her family first and foremost, Youth Council, Center of Independent Living, Advocacy for Children, and cooking for others and shopping.

Dixie loved the famous quote, "When I stand before God at the end of my life I would hope that I would have not a single bit of talent left and could say I used everything you gave me." She did just that. A gift she possessed was her natural ability to touch the lives of so many students and children and bring out their special talents and helped them shine.

On Friday, March 2, 2012, Dixie Holen, at the age of 63, passed peacefully in her sleep at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota with her loved ones by her side, husband of 43 years Richard, John (son), Tracee (daughter), David (brother), Kermit (son-in-law) and Tara (John's girl friend).

Dixie is also survived by her grandchildren, Brady and Brandon Tucker, and her loved ones, Marsha Groth, Myron (Lillian) Holen, Arvid (Ann) Holen, Gary (Mary) Holen, Shirley See, and Jean Holen and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Eldon and Doris Groth, rural Lisbon, North Dakota.

Marguerite (Bjerken) Holecek, age 60, of Laguna Beach, Calif., and formerly from Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, August 15th at the Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, CA. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 23rd at 2:00 PM at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Robert Rains officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the funeral at the church. Interment will be at Kingo Lutheran Cemetery in Fosston and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements.

Marguerite Kay Bjerken was born December 3, 1946 at Bismarck, North Dakota to parents Maurice and Marie (Turner) Bjerken. In 1947 her parents moved to Fosston, Minnesota where she grew up and was very active in Girl Scouts and a member of the Kingo Lutheran Church. Marguerite graduated from Fosston High School in 1964 and attended Moorhead State University in Moorhead Minnesota where she was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority and Sigma Alpha Eta. Sorority and received a degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology in 1968.

While in college Marguerite met her future husband Ronald Holecek and they were united in marriage on June 30, 1968 at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston, Minnesota. They resided briefly in Fargo, North Dakota before moving to Seattle Washington where her husband attended graduate school at the University of Washington. She worked at the University and was a member of the University women's rowing team. In 1969 Marguerite accompanied her husband serving in the US Army, to Asbury Park, New Jersey and later to Worms, Germany where she briefly worked as a speech therapist at the Manheim American School.

In 1973 they moved to Honolulu, Hawaii where Marguerite worked as an executive assistant to the manager of the International Market Place and subsequently founded a business, Importers Express, with a close friend of hers. While in Hawaii she obtained her private pilots license and was active in the 99's, an International Organization of Women Pilots founded by Amelia Earhart. An avid car enthusiast she was also active in the Sports Car Club of America and Porsche Club of America. In 1983 she and her husband moved to Laguna Beach, California where they have continued to reside.

Marguerite loved animals, traveling and working in her yard and flower garden. In recent years she returned to her parent's home in Fosston during the summer months to tend her mother's flower garden and reunite with her family and friends.

Marguerite passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, California at the age of 60 years.

She is survived by her husband, Ron in Laguna Beach, California and many other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Linda Jo Bjerken and brothers Kinney Bjerken and Maurice J.(Jerry) Bjerken.

Alf William Holt

1924-2007

Alf Holt, age 82, of Fosston, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday (March 7th) at First Care Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday (March 13th) at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. John Dalen officiating. Interment will be in Poplar River Cemetery, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held from Noon until the time of services at the church on Tuesday. Flag presentation will be provided by Wild Rice V.F.W. Post #1226 of Bejou. Alf William Holt (Hem) was born on August 24, 1924 in Anoka, Minnesota to parents Olaph and Alpha (Hem) Holt. His mother passed away during childbirth and he was raised by his grandparents, Ole and Amelia, and later, his uncles and aunts. He attended school in Fosston through the eighth grade while helping his uncles on the farm. He also worked at the Ford garage in Fosston during his teenage years.

Alf faithfully served his country by entering the United States Army in November of 1944 and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He received his honorable discharge in October of 1946 and returned to farming northeast of Bejou, Minnesota.

He was united in marriage to Ruby (Olson) Stiegelmeyer on June 2, 1968. After their marriage, they lived on the home farm and also operated Holt's Greenhouse from 1972 until 1980. They moved to the Cornerstone Residence in April of 2006, where they were currently residing.

Alf was a member of Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston, the Wild Rice V.F.W. Post #1226 of Bejou where he had served as Post Commander, the DAV (Disabled American Veteran's) of Crookston, and the Mahnomen American Legion.

In his spare time, Alf liked to tinker and could fix just about anything. He liked to deer hunting, fishing and going to Rollag to the Steam Thresher's Reunion. He dearly loved his dog, Teddy.

Alf passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at First Care Hospital in Fosston at the age of 82 years, six months and 11days.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby of Fosston; two daughters, Robin (Leroy) Colsen of Bejou, Minnesota, and Ruth Buschette of Moorhead, Minnesota; four stepsons, Russell (Virginia) Olson of Erskine, Minnesota, Rodney (Diane) Olson, Robert (Linda) Olson, and Randy (Tina) Olson, all of Fosston; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one half brother and one half sister and other relatives also survive.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; aunts and uncles; and infant grandson, Adam Colsen.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Irving Sandgren, Eugene Freyholtz, Robert "Buddy" Balstad, Kenny Yost, Oniel Rainsberry, and Russell Reichenbach. Pallbearers will be Roy Colsen, Kyle Delage, Kenny Olson, Dick Freyholtz, Steve Biescot and Jeff Olson.

Ruby Ellen (Stiegelmeyer)(Olson) Holt

1934-2012

Ruby Ellen Stiegelmeyer was born on June 1, 1934 in Cohasset, Minnesota to Jay and Katherine (Andrew) Stiegelmeyer, the youngest of seven children. She attended school in Cohasset and moved to the Fosston area with her family in 1951 where she continued her education.

Ruby was married to Richard Olson in 1954 and they started a family in McIntosh. They moved to Rochester, Minnesota in 1960 where Richard was employed by the Minnesota State Highway Department. In 1967 Ruby moved back to the Fosston area with her four sons.

She married Alf Holt in 1968 and lived on a farm south of Fosston in rural Bejou, where they also operated a greenhouse from 1972-80. In 2006 Ruby and Alf moved to Cornerstone Residence in Fosston where Alf passed away the following year.

Ruby moved to Poplar Meadows apartments in McIntosh in 2010. She met many good friends there and enjoyed spending time with them playing cards, bingo and watching movies.

Ruby loved gardening, in some years having over 100 tomato plants. She was a great cook and baker, everyone loved her fresh buns and cinnamon rolls. She loved her animals and always had at least one cat in her life. She also loved to sew and knit. She was a member of Kingo Lutheran Church and Bejou VFW Auxiliary Post #1226.

Ruby passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at her home in Poplar Meadows at the age of 78 years, six months and seven days.

Survivors include four sons, Russell (Ginger) Olson of Union, OH, Rodney Olson of Fosston, Robert Olson of McIntosh (Rhonda), and Randall (Tina) Olson of Fosston, two daughters; Robin (Leroy) Colsen of Frazee, and Ruth (Duane) Hotten of Fosston; daughter-in-law, Linda Olson of Erskine, Minnesota; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, sisters, a grandson, a great granddaughter and a daughter-in-law, Diane Olson.

Gordon Arnold Holter

1931-2012

Gordon Holter, age 81, of Warroad, Minnesota and formerly of Oslo, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday (December 27th) at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday (January 2nd) at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine with the Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, rural Erskine. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Bailey-Throne American Legion Post #596 of Erskine and the National Guard Honors Team. Gordon Arnold Holter was born on December 2, 1931 in Oak Park Township, Marshall County, Minnesota to parents Elling and Thilda (Dahl) Holter. He was baptized on April 17, 1932 and confirmed on June 1, 1947 at Oak Park Lutheran Church near Oslo, Minnesota.

Gordon farmed and raised cattle with his brothers on his family's farm near Oslo. He entered the United States Army in July of 1952, faithfully serving his country during the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge in July of 1954 and returned to the home farm. On November 12, 1955, he was united in marriage to Lynette Olson.

Gordon was known as a "jack of all trades" but spent many of his working years in agriculture, construction, and woodworking. He worked at Johnson Iron in East Grand Forks as a welder; he owned and operated a landscaping and clearing business; worked at Gowan Construction and formed H & H Wood Products which he operated out of the family farm. He was also a well-known boat builder. Gordon and Lynette divorced in 1997. Gordon has spent many of his retirement years in Warroad, Minnesota alongside his companion of 15 years, Lyla Moteberg.

He is a past member of the Eagles Club in Warroad and the American Legion in Warroad. He enjoyed woodworking, building boats, fishing, and in years past, singing in a quartet with his brothers. He was always willing to help anyone in need. He was a great story teller and enjoyed sharing his stories with others. Spending time with family and friends was very important to him. His dog Lucky was very special to him.

He is survived by his five children, Robbin Holter of Oslo, Minnesota, Lori (Keith) Chisholm of Manvel, North Dakota, Jody Clark of Alvarado, Minnesota, Larry (Wendy) Holter of Alvarado, Minnesota, and David (Thressa) Holter of Grand Forks, North Dakota; many grandchildren and great grandchildren along with nieces and nephews.

Also surviving is his special companion, Lyla Moteberg of Warroad, Minnesota; and Lyla's children, LaVonne (Bruce) McWilliam of Winger, Minnesota, LaDawna Anderson of Pflugerville, TX, Butch (Bonnie) Moteberg of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Punky (Ellen) Moteberg of Grand Haven, MI, along with their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Alvin, George, Harvey and Donald; three sisters, Lila Williams, June Laymon and Marlys Holter; son-in-law, Richard Geres; and granddaughter, Monique.

Honorary Pallbearers: Gordon's friends from Lakeview Restaurant of Warroad and his many other friends.

Edward "Eddie" Horacek

1914-2011

Edward Horacek, age 97, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (November 29th) at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (December 2nd) at the United Methodist Church in Erskine with the Rev. Michelle Miller officiating. Interment will be in Synod Cemetery, rural Erskine at a later date. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Edward "Eddie" Horacek was born on February 1, 1914 in New York City, New York to parents Emil and Katherine (Hnida) Horacek. He was baptized at the First Bohemian Presbyterian Church in New York City and attended school on the east side of New York.

On September 16, 1938 he married Margaret Calder and they had four children, Russel, Laura, Cathy and Margaret. His wife, Margaret, passed away in 1974.

He entered the United States Army in 1943 and was a member of a combat engineers unit. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned to his job at the Bordon Company and shortly thereafter joined the Hilton Hotel chain as a banquet manager.

In 1979, Eddie and Irene Carter were married in Pleasantville, New Jersey. They came to Erskine and attended the United Methodist Church where Eddie was a lay speaker for many years. He also carried mail for Erskine and Mentor for 10 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Erskine and a member of the Bailey-Throne American Legion Post #596 of Erskine.

Eddie loved fishing and gardening and also was a life-long New York Yankee fan.

Survivors include his wife, Irene of Erskine; son, Russel (Mary) of McIntosh, Minnesota; and daughters, Cathy (Richard) Carlson of Ohio and Margaret "Peggy" (Billy) Schaefer of New York; 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Also surviving are step-children, Bobby of New Jersey, Bonnie of North Carolina, Ethel of Mentor, Minnesota, and Patricia of New York.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret; daughter, Laura; and sister, Helen.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Bailey-Throne American Legion Post #596 of Erskine

Thomas Francis Horgeshimer

1948-2009

Thomas Horgeshimer, age 61, of McIntosh, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday (December 13th) at the Poplar Meadows Senior Living facility in McIntosh. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday (December 18th) at the McIntosh Community Center with Monsignor Roger Grundhaus officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (December 17th) and for one hour prior to the service, all at the McIntosh Community Center. Thomas Francis Horgeshimer was born on March 4, 1948 in Minot, North Dakota to Babe Victoria Horgeshimer. Thomas was raised by his grandparents, Theodore and Elizabeth Mae Horgeshimer in Deering, North Dakota. Tom attended grade school two miles from his home in a one room country school. In 1964, the family moved to Mentor, Minnesota where he attended Mentor High School, graduating in 1966.

Tom met Theresa Bauer in the summer of 1969 and after a brief courtship, they were married on October 25, 1969. Following their marriage, they made their home near Mentor. Tom was employed by Detrioter's Mobile Home Manufacturing in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota from 1969 until 1978. On April 13, 1971 they were blessed with a daughter, Theresa Renae and on June 3, 1973 they were blessed with a son, Darwin Thomas.

In 1978, Tom left Detroiter's and started with Burlington Northern Railroad where he continued to work until becoming disabled in December of 2005.

Tom enjoyed the outdoors. In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and working on cars. Most of all he enjoyed time spent with friends and family. Most days he could be found in his shop with an Old Milwaukee in hand, listening to music and visiting with friends. After being diagnosed with cancer, Tom and Theresa moved to Poplar Meadows in McIntosh.

Tom passed away at home with his family by his side. He will long be missed and lovingly remembered.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Theresa of McIntosh; one son, Darwin (Cheryl) of Park Rapids, Minnesota; daughter, Renae of McIntosh; four grandchildren, Alyssa Mae, Hunter Lee, Zoey Victoria, and Wyatt Thomas.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Babe Horgeshimer in 1992; his grandparents, Theodore in 1988 and Elizabeth in 1994; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Tom's grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Terry Finn, Gary Moran, Jeff Evenson, Mark Evenson, Wayne "Gus" Gustafson, Dennis Tice, and Dale Schabacker.
