Opal Geneve (Dery) Haagenson

1923-2013

Born: July 19, 1923
Died: May 15, 2013

Opal Haagenson, age 89, from McIntosh, MN passed away on Wednesday, May 15th at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, ND. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, May 21st at 11:00 AM at Mount Carmel Free Lutheran Church in McIntosh with Rev. Dale Mellgren officiating. Family will greet friends for one hour before the memorial service at the church, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home serving McIntosh is in charge of the arrangements. Messages of condolence may be sent to www.carlinhoialmen.com.

Opal Geneve Dery was born on July 19, 1923, at Cudworth, Saskatchewan, Canada, and lived with her parents in North Battlefield, Saskatchewan as a young girl. At the age of 15, they moved back to the states, to Gonvick, Minnesota.

At age 17, July 23, 1940 she married the love of her life, Arnold Haagenson. She went to work at Road Camp with Haagenson and Tranby Construction Company as one of the camp cooks, and that is where she learned some of her awesome cooking skills. Anyone knowing Opal, knows that you couldn't be long in the house without something to eat!! Opal and Arnold lived in McIntosh, Minnesota and were married for 54 years.

She said her best years were "Up at the Farm~the High Country", with her family. Her time working in her 'huge' garden was well spent. She loved sharing the bountiful harvest with family, friends and neighbors, and she loved her Pomeranian Peaches; where ever she went in the house, Peaches was right behind her.

She was president of the park board during the 70's and tended the flower beds in the community for many years. Ask her what her favorite flower was and she would always say, "all of them!" She also taught Macrame classes in the 70's, Oh what fun those girls had, she also enjoyed her Toll Painting years, painting everything she could find. She also loved sewing clothes for herself and her family.

Opal loved the outdoors and camping, even just sitting in her RV gave her much joy, especially in her later years, and she never refused a game of cards, thank you Pat and Carol. All of her many friends were very important to her.

Her daughter, DeAnna moved back home in 2002 to help Opal remain in her home, and they enjoyed gardening and canning together. She loved teaching how to be a good homemaker.

Opal always loved to go with DeAnna to Bemidji to meet son, Don and grab a bite to eat, then shopping at Walmart! This time to her was very special, it was for her kids as well.... as it is all about family. The times all her children and grandchildren were together, to her; was the Best of Life!

She wanted to have bedside prayers for herself and her loved ones, especially the last few years of her life that she shared with her daughter, and her favorite scriptures were Psalm 91 and Psalm 21.

They say "Homemaker" is an outdated word, but that is exactly what Opal Haagenson was. She loved sowing love and togetherness in the hearts of her loved ones, laughing and telling stories... she will be deeply missed. On Wednesday, May 15, 2013 Opal passed away at Essentia Hospital in Fargo at the age of 89 years.

She is survived by her son, Don (Debbie) Haagenson of Park Rapids, Minnesota; her daughter, DeAnna Haagenson of McIntosh; granddaughter, Kristen Harrison; grandson, Beau Haagenson; step grandson, Jason VanValkenburg; and great grandchildren, Kellen of Kristen and Jared Harrison and William and Benjamin of Jason and Natalie VanValkenburg. She was preceded in death by her father, Albert "Albear" Dery; her mother, Regnil Rudie; step father, Norman Rudie; husband, Arnold Haagenson; and infant sister, Ivonne Gwendlyn Dery.

Helen Lucille (James) Hagge

1922-2013

Born: October 05, 1922
Died: June 11, 2013

Helen Hagge, age 90, of Erskine, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday (June 11th) at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (June 15th) at Trinity Free Lutheran Church, rural McIntosh with the Rev. Dale Mellgren officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Friday (June 14th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Erskine. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, serving McIntosh. Messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.

Helen Lucile James was born on October 5, 1922 in Nodaway Township, Taylor County, Iowa to parents Albert Leroy "Lee" and Cora Grace (Wilson) James. Helen grew up in the hills of southwestern Iowa around Corning. She wrote a book of memories for each of her grandchildren and shared with them how she loved sliding on the hills in the wintertime, playing in the orchard, going down in the storm cave on a hot summer day with her two brothers and sister to cool off, playing with dolls and paper dolls with her sister, and going to the creek to play in the sand.

Helen's Grandma James lived with them when she was growing up, and Helen spent much time listening to her grandmother tell stories of when she was young. Grandma had come with her family to Iowa from Ohio, and had walked behind a covered wagon during much of that journey. Grandma, Barbara Ellen, always had time to spend with Helen, and it seems she influenced Helen's life in a special way.

Helen loved learning and reading. The quote from Thomas Jefferson, "I cannot live without books" is very fitting for her. Helen told how delighted she was when she was allowed to go to school at the age of four with her two older brothers and finally learned how to read for herself. After graduating from high school in Villisca, Iowa, she took training to become a school teacher. She taught at four different country schools in southern Iowa. Here is what she wrote for her grandchildren, "I boarded at one of the homes in the district and walked to school. I did my own janitor work and taught eight grades. One school had nine. My salary was $50 a month when I started. The last year I taught it had gone up to $100 a month. Helen simply loved books and read voraciously. She told of how her dad would purchase a box of books at an auction sale and bring it home for the family to share. It seems that was the greatest treasure he could bring home! Her advice would be, "Always take a book with you. You never know when you will have time to read!"

Helen met her future husband, Art, through her brother, Gerald. Art and Gerald were in the Army together during World War II. Gerald gave Art his little sister's name and address and Art and Helen began corresponding with each other during the war. After Art got home from the war, he decided to take a trip to Iowa and get to know this Helen he had been writing to. When Art returned to Minnesota from Iowa, he wrote Helen a letter asking her to marry him. She responded, "Yes," and so they were married on a sunny, cold day on April 2, 1948 in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota with deep snow on the ground. Helen and Art lived on the farm just east of Brooks for 53 years. Helen enjoyed helping Art on the farm. She usually fed the little calves in the barn, took care of the chicks in the brooder house, drove the tractor on the baler, and drove the truck for grain hauling. They made a good team.

In September of 2001, Art and Helen moved to The Country Place Assisted Living Facility in Erskine, Minnesota. Helen had numerous close friends here, whom she enjoyed visiting with, played Bingo twice a week, was involved with weekly Bible Study, and enjoyed attending the sing-a-longs over at PMCC. In May of 2013 she moved to First Care Nursing Home in Fosston where she was currently living.

There were other things that Helen loved in her life. She loved music and learned to sing harmony when she sang with her dad while growing up. She sang numerous years with The Christian Fellowship Singers of the Plummer area and greatly enjoyed that time together. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery work, and quilting. She loved gardening and raising flowers. She enjoyed poetry and actually wrote many poems in her younger years. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and liked game shows on TV such as Jeopardy. She enjoyed making homemade candy and sharing it with family and friends.

She also loved visiting with her grandchildren and playing games with them like Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble. Last, but certainly not least, Helen had a deep and abiding faith in God and in His Son, Jesus Christ. She wrote that this was the most important thing in her life. She prayed daily for family and friends, and her deepest heart's desire would be that all would come to salvation by believing in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior and by accepting His death on the cross as payment for their sins.

Survivors include her two children, Jimmy (Susan) Hagge of Brooks, Minnesota and Betty (Harvey) Johnson of Fosston, Minnesota; 6 grandchildren, Laurel (Ben) Smith of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Sarah Hagge (Burgess) Smith of Chicago, IL, Kirsten (Matt) Larsen of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Joshua (Tammy) Johnson of Bagley, Minnesota, Heather Broadwell of Fosston, Minnesota, and David (Riley) Johnson of Plymouth, Minnesota; 7 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Art; infant son, Kenneth; parents, Albert and Cora James; brothers, Floyd and Gerald James; and sister, Irene James.

Gladys Irene Hanson was born on August 2, 1906 near Oklee, Minnesota to parents Andrew and Emilia (Carlson) Hanson. The family lived north of Oklee on what was referred to as "the claim." Gladys was the seventh child in a family that would be three boys and seven girls. In order of age, they were Herbert, Florence, Edythe, Winnifred, Lloyd, Pearl, Gladys, Eunice, Royal and Mildred.

Gladys attended the local schools, graduating from Oklee High School in 1924. She attended Bemidji and Moorhead State Colleges earning an Associate Degree and a Minnesota teaching certificate. She then spent the next seven years teaching in rural schools at Hill River Township near Gully, and near Leonard, Minnesota.

The interest was then sparked for Gladys to go west. She traveled to California to share an apartment with cousins Lillian and Esther Nystrom in Berkley. She found work at a cafeteria with her specialty being baking cakes. Gladys soon decided this was not taking her where she wanted to be and returned to school at the University of California-Berkley, graduating in 1941 with a BS in mathematics and a California teaching credential.

A teaching position in north Bakersfield caught Gladys' attention. She accepted the offer and taught in the Standard School District. She was there 29 years teaching Jr. High Math and French. Gladys enjoyed her years of teaching, the students, other faculty, and administrative staff.

After her retirement, Galdys continued to live in Bakersfield. She moved to First Care Nursing Home in Fosston, Minnesota in December 2002, where she could be closer to nieces and nephews.

Gladys always loved traveling. Her first trip out of the U.S. took her to Norway where she attended the University of Oslo for the summer. She also visited Sweden. Gladys would return to Scandinavia several times with her travels. A few years later, another summer school was spent at the University of Hawaii. She also made trips to Alaska and most of the continental United States, Europe, Mexico, Central America and once to the Asian countries. Along with her travels, Gladys enjoyed photography and making home movies with her movie camera.

At a very young age, Gladys accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. She attended First Assembly of God Church in Bakersfield where she developed many lifelong friends. She did much volunteer work for the church and was treasurer for the Sunday School for many years.

Gladys did not have children of her own but considered her many nieces and nephews her family.

On Saturday, August 16, 2008 Galdys passed away at First Care Nursing Home at the age of 102 years.

He grew up in the Lengby/Fosston area and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby. He attended Fosston High School where he was very active in sports and theatre. After basic training, he returned to the area and attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks where he met the love of his life, Nicole.

Matt was united in marriage to Nicole York on August 9, 2003 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby. After their marriage, they lived in Grand Forks and the Twin Cities before Matt enlisted in the United States Army in 2004.

Sergeant Harmon was stationed overseas with the United States Army at the Joint Multi-Nation Training Center in Grafenwoehr, Germany. Before moving to Grafenwoehr, he and his family were stationed in Baumholder, Germany. Matt had successfully completed two prior tours of duty in Iraq and had just begun a planned 12 month tour to Afghanistan. As written by Nicole: Matt was my best friend, one of the greatest men I have ever known (I think this is due to having a wonderful family to grow up with), he was a fantastic father, the children adore him, and he was the best husband I could ask for. We never went to bed angry, we rarely argued but when we did we talked through our issues and we never tore each other down with personal insults. He is a man that is worth 1,000 men and there is no way to fill this pain in my heart now that he is gone. However, I am thankful for every moment, every breath, and every longing look that we had together. I cannot imagine what life would have been like without him and I am having a hard time picturing life from here on out without him, but even though he has passed he will always be with me. He gave me more love and strength than I ever thought I deserved. And he also gave me a gift that will last for a lifetime, our three children Danika, Vincent, and Elsie. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Alpha 1-2 Infantry Task Force 3-66 Armored "The Wolf Pack." Pallbearers will be Dean Harmon, Mark Harmon, Tyler York, William York, Cory Schreiber, and Alan Olson. Pallbearers at the graveside will be members of the United States Army.
