HANNA CEMETERY

Section 8, Hammond Township, Polk County
(original location)

Graves moved 3 1/2 miles south to Zion Cemetery, Section 28, Hammond Township

The Hanna Cemetery has some of the oldest burials in Hammond Twp.  This is a family cemetery with Judson, Hanna and related families buried here.  In the 1896 Index Map of Polk County this part of Section 8 was owned by Ernest Hanna and W.N. Hanna and Jessie Hanna owned land in Section 9.

Other documents show that Jessie Hanna owned land in Section 8 before this date. In 1915 this land was owned by Lorenzo Hanna.   In 2004 the graves were moved 3 1/2 miles south to Zion Cemetery in Section 28.  Hanna Cemetery was moved to make way for a larger ditch that was to be dug right beside the cemetery.  Some information below is from the Polk County Historical Society. Photos of Hanna Cemetery were taken by Lee D. Arnold in 1980 and they show what this cemetery looked like at its original location.

Thank you to Donna, Debbie and their families for preserving Hanna Cemetery's history, and a thank you so much to Ann, Donna, Debbie for submitting this information -- April 2005
